F om he pe spec i e o cul u al linguis ics, speci ic linguis ic s yles such as Basi a Pa ibasa
Bali ca y signi ican cul u al meanings (P a iwi e al., 2019)(; (Dewi e al., 2018). Acco ding o
Ka dana, Basi a Pa ibasa ep esen s a cul u al asse ha embodies eachings, admoni ions, and
mo al no ms o Balinese socie y (Ka dana e al., 2022); (Se iawan, 2023). A his le el, he p esen
s udy has he po en ial o con ibu e o scien i ic unde s anding by e ealing he linguis ic
unc ions in ol ed in ansmi ing adi ional cul u al alues.
Inno a ions in wayang, such as Wayang Kuli Jobla (WKJ), demons a e a end o
in eg a ing mode n elemen s, including he use o Balinese pa ibasa and pop music, o a ac
younge audiences (Ma ajaya, 2016). Howe e , such p oduc ions ace challenges ela ed o he
egene a ion o young dalang (puppe mas e s) and he declining in e es o he new gene a ion
in adi ional o ms.
Wayang Jobla , pa icula ly he ABG e sion, has become a local phenomenon packaged in a
pop-mode n o ma ha inco po a es Basi a Pa ibasa Bali as pa o he cha ac e s’ dialogue and
he o ic (Ma ajaya, 2016). The humo ous and exp essi e cha ac e o Jobla e ec i ely con eys
humo , social c i ique, and Balinese cul u al alues in an accessible o m. Obse a ional da a
show ha he use o Basi a Pa ibasa se es as a b idge be ween cul u al messages and
en e ainmen .
This phenomenon eme ges as a cul u al s a egy o main ain ele ance in he mode n e a.
The collabo a ion be ween dalang such as I Ke u Muada and academic ins i u ions ( o ins ance,
he Indonesian Ins i u e o he A s—ISI Denpasa ) has encou aged inno a ions in language use
and pe o mance aes he ics (Ma ajaya, 2016). Ano he d i ing ac o is he need o p ese e
cul u al alues amid globaliza ion h ough media ha a e close o younge audiences.
P e ious esea ch has la gely ocused on aes he ic inno a ion and social c i icism in wayang
pe o mances such as Wayang Kuli Jobla , Cenk Blonk, and Sidia (Suwija, I. N., Cika, I. W., Ra na,
N. K., & Suas ika, 2008); (Yulian i & Ma haeni, 2021); (Made Diana Dwi Pu a e al., 2013).
Howe e , in-dep h s udies examining he speci ic ole o Basi a Pa ibasa Bali in cul u al discou se
h ough wayang media emain limi ed. The e is a gap in s ylis ic s udies o Balinese pa ibasa ha
analyze hei linguis ic o ms and unc ions wi hin he communica i e con ex o Wayang Jobla
ABG.
Scien i ically, his s udy is signi ican o illing he gap in s ylis ic s udies o unique linguis ic
ea u es wi hin Balinese cul u e. F om a p ac ical pe spec i e, he indings may se e as a model
o cul u al e i aliza ion h ough c ea i e media, suppo ing he egene a ion o audiences and
young dalang in Bali (Pu a & Sa i, 2019); (Supa iadi e al., 2020). Mo eo e , he empi ical esul s
a e expec ed o p o ide s ong jus i ica ion o policies conce ning local language and cul u e
educa ion in ins i u ions such as ISI and cul u al agencies.

analysis o he o ms and unc ions o Basi a Pa ibasa Bali; second, o he p ac ical ield by o e ing

bene i cul u al policymake s and pe o mance p ac i ione s.

cul u al asse s h ough wayang pe o mances. This aligns wi h he main objec i es o he
esea ch: (1) o iden i y he linguis ic o ms o Basi a Pa ibasa Bali used in he Wayang Jobla ABG
pe o mance wi h he play Tualen Dadi Ca u; (2) o analyze he communica i e unc ions o
Basi a Pa ibasa Bali in he pe o mance con ex , including educa ional, pe suasi e, social-c i ical,
and en e ainmen unc ions; and (3) o explain he ole o Basi a Pa ibasa Bali in ansmi ing

such as idioms, me apho s, and p o e bs—encode he cul u al alues and knowledge sys ems o
hei speech communi ies. In his con ex , Basi a Pa ibasa Bali unc ions no only as a ool o
communica ion bu also as a eposi o y o alues, no ms, and e hics o Balinese cul u e; (2)
Func ional P agma ics Theo y. This heo y is used o analyze he communica i e unc ions o
u e ances, including in en ions, pu poses, and e ec s o Basi a Pa ibasa wi hin wayang
discou se. Acco ding o (Halliday, 1994), language se es h ee main me a unc ions: idea ional,
in e pe sonal, and ex ual. Basi a Pa ibasa Bali can be analyzed h ough hese h ee unc ions in
he Wayang Jobla ABG pe o mance; (3)T adi ional S ylis ics Theo y. This heo y examines he
dis inc i e linguis ic o ms and s ylis ic ea u es in li e a y o aes he ic exp essions. Leech, G. N.,
& Sho , (2007) s a e ha s ylis ics in es iga es non-neu al language choices, including dic ion,
me apho , epe i ion, and i ony o aes he ic and communica i e pu poses. In his sense, Basi a
Pa ibasa Bali, as a dis inc i e speech s yle, ca ies unique he o ical and a is ic elemen s.
These h ee heo ies a e applied in eg a i ely o analyze he da a, enabling he s udy o
explain he o mal (s ylis ic), unc ional (p agma ic), and cul u al (cul u al-linguis ic) dimensions
o Basi a Pa ibasa Bali in he Wayang Jobla ABG pe o mance wi h he play Tualen Dadi Ca u.
2. Resea ch Me hod
This s udy employed a quali a i e app oach (Moleong, 2017). This app oach was chosen
because i aimed o unde s and he o m, unc ion, and cul u al alues o basi a pa ibasa (Balinese
p o e bs) used in he Wayang Jobla ABG wi h he play Tualen Dadi Ca u pe o mance. The
quali a i e app oach emphasizes in-dep h analysis o na u ally occu ing linguis ic da a wi hin
cul u al p ac ices.
This esea ch was desc ip i e-quali a i e in na u e, adop ing a linguis ic s ylis ics and
e hnog aphy o communica ion design. Acco ding o C eswell (2014) desc ip i e-quali a i e
esea ch in ol es in e p e ing he meaning and cul u al con ex embedded in linguis ic da a. The
s ylis ic design was employed o e eal linguis ic ea u es and s uc u al pa e ns o pa ibasa,
while he e hnog aphy o communica ion design was used o explo e hei unc ions and oles
wi hin sociocul u al in e ac ions du ing he pe o mance.
The esea ch loca ion included pe o mance enues o digi al documen a ion o Wayang
Jobla ABG wi h he play Tualen Dadi Ca u, accessible h ough cul u al e en s in Bali o digi al
ideo a chi es.
The esea ch objec was he basi a pa ibasa u e ances ound in dialogues, na a ions, and
cha ac e con e sa ions wi hin he Wayang Jobla ABG wi h he play Tualen Dadi Ca u
pe o mance. The ocus was placed on he linguis ic o ms, p agma ic unc ions, and cul u al
meanings o hese exp essions.

o he u e ances (educa ional, humo ous, c i ical, ad iso y, e c.) wi hin he pe o mance con ex ,
(4) Cul u al meaning in e p e a ion using a linguis ic-cul u al app oach o in e p e local alues,
no ms, and ideologies e lec ed in he da a, (5) Da a iangula ion by c oss-checking indings om
in e iews and documen a ion o enhance he alidi y o he esul s (Moleong, 2017).
The main esea ch ins umen was he esea che as he key ins umen (human ins umen ),
di ec ly in ol ed in obse a ion, in e iewing, and da a in e p e a ion. Suppo ing ins umen s
included: (1) In e iew guide, (2) Obse a ion shee , (3) Audio/ ideo eco ding de ices, and (4)
T ansc ip ion and ex analysis empla es (Moleong, 2017).

and analysis p ocedu es (Sugiyono, 2019).
