The ela ionship be ween human T-lympho opic i us ype 1 (HTLV-1) and mycosis ungoides, a ype o
cu aneous T cell lymphoma emains obscu e. While HTLV-1 in ec ion has been closely associa ed o
adul T cell lymphoma (ATLL), he e is limi ed da a on i s ela ionship o o he ype cance s de i ed om
he immune sys em such as Mycosis ungoides. He e we aim o p esen a e ospec i e case se ies o
Pe u ian pa ien s wi h HTLV-1 in ec ion who we e also diagnosed wi h mycosis ungoides.
Me hod
We did a seconda y da a analysis o in es iga e he associa ion o mycosis ungoides and HTLV-1
diagnosis on pa ien s a he Hospi al Nacional Caye ano He edia and he Ins i u o de Medicina T opical
Alexande on Humbold (IMTA H) in Lima, Pe u. Demog aphic in o ma ion, clinical eco ds, labo a o y
epo s and biopsy epo s (e.g., skin, bone ma ow, ganglia). Cu en s a us was checked using na ional
egis e s. We used desc ip i e s a is ics me hods o ob ain he esul s.
Resul s
We desc ibe 26 pa ien s wi h Mycosis ungoides and HTLV-1. O hese pa ien s, 9 (35%) we e male and
17 we e emale (65%). Rega ding hei e hnici y, 12 (46%) we e mixed ace, 11 (42%) we e Andean, 1
(3%) was whi e, 1 (3%) was Asian and 1 (3%) unspecified. The median age a HTLV-1 in ec ion diagnosis
was 63 yea s (IQR 53 - 73.5) and he median age a mycosis ungoides diagnosis was 65 yea s (IQR 54 –
75). 8 o hem (30%) a e li ing, 16 (61%) a e deceased and 2 we e los o ollow-up. Addi ionally,
ega ding o he HTLV 1-associa ed mani es a ions 6 pa ien s (23%) had in ec i e de ma i is, 1 (3%) had
scabies and 1 (3%) had HTLV1- associa ed myelopa hy/ opical spas ic pa apa esis (HAM/TSP).
Conclusion
Th ough his da a we desc ibe a possible associa ion be ween HTLV-1 and Cu aneous T cell
lymphoma/mycosis ungoides. This is a poo ly ecognized associa ion, o ou knowledge he e a e no
many epo s o hese wo en i ies. Fu he s udies should be done in o de o cla i y he ela ionship
be ween hem. Addi ionally, we sugges ha in coun ies wi h high p e alence o HLTV-1, pa ien s wi h
newly diagnosed Mycosis ungoides should be assessed o HTLV-1 as well.
