From their discovery in around 1460 until the 18th century, the Cabo Verde archipelago was never the subject of a dedicated, or even cursory, scientific expedition. Therefore, there is very little information on its flora or the state of its vegetation during this long period (Romeiras et al. 2014). Even though it was the earliest tropical European colony (Santos & Cabral 2006) and that it occupied a strategic position on maritime trade routes between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, only a few scattered testimonials or collections have been reported from episodic stopovers or short trips. At that time, most ships on scientific expeditions were headed towards more southerly or even austral regions, which sexuel linnéen afin de faciliter les futures études de cette collection historique. ABSTRACT João da Silva Feijó (1760-1824), Portuguese naturalist taking part in the “Philosophical Journeys” under the patronage of the Portuguese Crown, led the first scientific expedition devoted exclusively to the study of the Natural History of the Cabo Verde Islands between 1783 and 1796. On behalf of the Royal Museum of Natural History and Botanical Garden of Ajuda in Lisbon, Feijó made the first extensive plant collections (1783-1789) on all of the islands that together with his manuscripts offer a glimpse of the flora of Cabo Verde, as it existed at the end of 18th century. This study provides unique data on the legacy of Feijó’s collections, with details of his expedition through the Cabo Verde Islands. His plant collections, nameless for a long time and scattered in different Herbaria, were reunited specifically for this study. Moreover, the manuscripts related to the plant collections are discussed, and the link between the Feijó’s determinations and the current scientific names were established. A numbering for this herbarium is proposed here, based on the Linnaean sexual system in order to facilitate future studies of this historical collection. Each specimen has been labelled with some precious information from archives (collector, date) to pay tribute to Feijó and to break the two century-long silence of his collection. Finally, the Feijó herbarium, and its various tribulations over the years are described and explained.
103 The scientific expedition of João da Silva Feijó to the Cabo Verde Islands/L’expédition scientifique de João da Silva Feijó aux îles du Cap Vert ADANSONIA, sér. 3 • 2019 • 41 (12) could explain why the islands were relatively overlooked. The testimonials, for the most part summary, are in the form of voyage accounts, illustrations or more rarely seed collections. The first known collection of plants was made in August 1772 by J. Forster and his son during the second voyage of Capitan Cook (Nicolson & Fosberg 2004). On their way to the Pacific, they made a short stopover on the island of Santiago, where they collected around 40 plants in the vicinity of Praia (Forster 1789). However, the majority of the observations and specimens are limited to the low altitude vegetation of the valleys surrounding the ports and none were taken at higher altitudes, where most endemic species are confined (Chevalier 1935; Brochmann et al. 1997; Duarte et al. 2008). It was only in 1783 that the first scientific expedition entirely dedicated to the study of Natural Science of the Cabo Verde Islands took place. It was led by the Portuguese naturalist João da Silva Feijó (1760-1824), in the context of the scientific expeditions in the Portuguese Overseas Territories, called as “Philosophical Journeys”, under the patronage of the Portuguese Crown (Simon 1983). He was the first naturalist to climb the mountains, delve into the deep valleys and roam the coastlines of all the islands of the archipelago for thirteen years between 1783 and 1796 (Pereira 2010). His main objective was to collect and catalogue all of the minerals, plants and animals that were to be found in the colony and to send them to the Real Museu de História Natural e Jardim Botânico da Ajuda in Lisbon (Royal Museum of Natural History and Botanic Garden of Ajuda). Feijó built the first and the largest collection of plants from the Cabo Verde archipelago during the end of 18th century. Today however, his name has been almost forgotten in the field of Natural History, and particularly in botany. Unfortunately, the work of Feijó received little attention from the scientists of his day, hampering his ascension and prosperity. The only information linking Feijó to botany are a few short notes mentioning him in studies on the flora, or botanical exploration of Cabo Verde (Cardoso 1902, 1905, 1915; Chevalier 1935; Barbosa 1962; Lobin 1987; Liberato 1994) and in a recent study on the first collections in Cabo Verde (Romeiras et al. 2014). Nonetheless, several plants have been named after him, including two New World Myrtaceae by Berg (1857, 1859), the famous fruiting shrub Feijoa sellowiana (O.Berg) O.Berg synonym of Acca sellowiana (O.Berg) O.Berg, commonly called “Feijoa”; and Eugenia feijoi O.Berg synonym of Eugenia moschata (Aubl.) Nied. ex T.Durand & B.D.Jacks. For the flora of Cabo Verde, a suffrutescent rupicolous Campanulaceae, endemic to the island of Santo Antão was recently named in his honour by one of the authors, Campanula feijoana Gardère (2015). Although some studies have revealed valuable information about Feijó activities as a naturalist in the Cabo Verde Islands (Guedes 1997; Guedes & Arruda 2000; Pereira 2010; Pereira & Santos 2012; Torrão 2012; Roque & Torrão 2013, 2014; Romeiras et al. 2014), his plant collection has remained nameless and scattered in several Herbaria until recently. contrées plus méridionales voire australes, ce qui peut expliquer le peu d’attention qui leur a été portée.

The main goal of this study is to provide original data related to this still little known naturalist, in order to raise the value of his botanical collections, which provide the first accounts of the flora of the islands, as it existed in the 18th century. This study is mostly based on the examination of herbarium specimens, identified as being Feijó’s, and data collected from original documents conserved in Paris and Lisbon Institutions, listed below. Specifically, for this study, we will review the birth of the Philosophical Journeys and the odyssey of Feijó in the Cabo Verde Islands providing a chronological order of the events of his expedition and his itinerary in the archipelago and the plant collections housed in different Herbaria and manuscripts (letters, memoirs and lists of plants) in order to correct inaccuracies of our predecessors. Links between the Feijó’s determinations and the current scientific names were established; and each specimen was labelled with more complete information (collector and date). Finally, we will explain the transfer of the plant collections made by Feijó in Cabo Verde to Paris, via Lisbon, and the tribulations of his herbarium over the years. He enrolled in Mathematics and “Natural Philosophy”, the equivalent of modern day Natural Sciences, Physics and Chemistry (Pereira & Santos 2012) and seemed to prefer Chemistry, the field in which he specialized (Simon 1983). He was one of the students of the famous naturalist Domenico Vandelli (1735-1816), medical doctor from the University of Padua, correspondent of Linnaeus (Scarano 2008) and one of the pioneers of Lusitanian museology (Meriggi 1989; Pirola 1989; Brigola 2003, 2008). Through his experience and fame within the scientific community of his era, Vandelli was recruited in 1764 by the Portuguese Crown during the Pombaline Reforms period (Melli 1966; Carvalho 1987) to teach Natural Sciences and Chemistry (Correia 1954) and later also to plan and direct the Real L’objectif de cette étude est de mettre en lumière des informations originales relatives à ce naturaliste encore méconnu, afin de réévaluer à leur juste valeur ses récoltes botaniques. He occupied that position during more than forty years without pause between 1768 and 1810 (Carvalho 1987; Vandelli 2003; Brigola 2008). Vandelli was also one of the founders of Museu de História Natural and Jardim Botânico of the University of Coimbra (Battelli 1929; Carvalho 1987; Brigola 2003). Along with the other European nations, Portugal was enticed by the Linnaean revolution and joined the race to collect and classify new minerals, plants and animals. Around 1778, in order to enrich the natural history collections of the newly constructed Museum of Ajuda and to explore regions that were still unknown, a grand scientific expedition to Brazil was planned by Vandelli (Vandelli 1987; Kury 2008a). Ordered by the Portuguese Crown, these expeditions best known as the “Philosophical Journeys” incarnated the Portuguese spirit of the Enlightenment in the Sciences. The same year, the principal instigators of these expeditions, Domenico Vandelli and the Minister of Overseas and Marines, Martinho de Mello e Castro (1716-1795) united a group of recently graduated students at the Museum of Ajuda. Among them was Feijó, who shared the collective desire to complete their education as naturalists. Vandelli and Giulio Mattiazzi (?-1794), ex-gardener of the Orto Botanico di Padova and appointed by Vandelli in 1768 gardener-in-chief of the Botanical Garden of Ajuda, directed the group (Brigola 2003). Out of the other naturalists, Feijó distinguished himself through his chemistry experimentation on the “Æthere vitriolico” in the laboratory of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (Pereira & Santos 2012). During the preparatory phase, the naturalists were assigned a short expedition within Portugal to perfect their scientific education. Feijó with his Brazilian colleague, Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira (1756-1815), was sent to explore the coalmines of Buarcos near Cabo Mondego (Simon 1983) in the Coimbra District. As a part of their preparations, Vandelli and his disciples wrote several manuals to teach the collection of plants, animals, and minerals (Pataca & Pinheiro 2005; Pataca 2011; Pereira & Cruz 2009). In 1779, Vandelli (2008) wrote an important guide intended for the naturalists on their missions, entitled Viagens filosóficas ou dissertação sobre as importantes regras que o filósofo naturalista nas suas peregrinações deve principalmente observar (Philosophical Journeys or Dissertation on the Important Rules that the naturalist must follow during his expedition). In it one can find precious information such as how to keep a logbook, how to write, to draw, or even how to collect plant specimens. Then in 1781, the young naturalists of the Museum of Ajuda wrote in turn a manual on collection methods and preparation of botanical, zoological or mineral specimens for shipping: Méthodo de Recolher, signed by Ferreira as “Os Naturalistas” (Almaça 1993). However, Breves Instruções (ACL 1781) was the only manual that was ever published during that time period in Portugal. Written to promote the collecting and sending of specimens to Lisbon, it was sent to every Royal Governor in the Overseas Territories (Simon 1983; Pereira & Cruz 2009). Attached to the Botanical Garden of Ajuda was the Casa do Risco (Drawing Studio), where the illustrators who would accompany the ici, Musée d’Ajuda), annexé au Palais royal d’Ajuda.

Feijó will explore the deep valleys that open out to the ocean as well as the numerous locations inland. But he will spend the most time exploring the Ribeira de Paúl (Fig. 7), where a small indigo mill (“Anil” in Portuguese), called Fazenda Real do Anil, installed under the orders of the Marquess of Gouveia (D. João de Mascarenhas) when he was donatary of the island in the third decade of the 18th century (Chelmicki 1841; Matos 1997). The indigo, extract from the leaves of Indigofera tinctoria L. (Fabaceae), was largely cultivated at this time in Cabo Verde. Today, the plant is naturalised throughout the archipelago (Fig. 8). He wrote a treatise on indigo entitled Fábrica Real do Anil da Ilha de Santo, published in Memórias Económicas of the Royal Academy of Sciences, in which he describes the different steps involved in making the dye (Feijó 1789b). July 1785. Expedition to the island of São Vicente, only retraced through a list of a collection of rocks, soils and some fish. He visited many beaches, valleys and mountains such as Entre Picos, Madeiral and Monte Verde. August 1785-March 1786. Feijó will stay for 7 months on the island of Santiago, from which he will send back the collections from his expeditions to Santo Antão (24 crates) and São Vicente (three boxes) on the brigantines Santo António et São Frutuozo. Second scientific expeditions: 1786-1789 March 1786. Second expedition to the island of Brava to collect new saltpetre samples. Mattiazzi having judged that the pieces from the first expedition were not numerous enough for analysis. April 1786-April 1787. Beginning of the second scientific expedition to Fogo, with the primary objective of collecting volcanic rock samples from the latest eruption, in January 1785. He will visit the area around the newly formed craters several times to observe this as-yet poorly understood natural phenomenon. From these observations, he will write an account (Feijó 1814, 1857), and make two unpublished illustrations of the active volcano (Fig. 9A, B). The climate being favourable for the development of vegetation, that is to say after the rainy season, he will make a new herbarium, less extensive than that of the previous mission in 1783. Nonetheless, according Feijó these new specimens are taxonomic novelties (new genera and species). He sent them off on the galley A Farinheira and the corvette São Francisco de Paula. April 1787-May 1788. On April 11th, 1787, Feijó returned to the island of Santiago where he will stay for a year. It is during this time period that he most likely wrote his booklet containing taxonomical novelties, entitled Plantae Insulanae (Feijó 1788). Avril 1785.

Taking advantage of the departure of the brigantine São João Baptista, he will send out two barrels full of fish, reptiles and birds. Next, he did at least one mission to Santo Antão where he continued his work on Fazenda Real do Anil, as ordered by A.M. de Faria e Maia. On this mission, he collected dragon tree resin called “Sangue de Drago” (Dracaena draco (L.) L., Asparagaceae), indigo samples, insects and plants; no detailed list was able to be found. Stay on Santiago: 1789-1796 January 1789-September 1796. Return to Santiago. From 1789 on, Feijó considered his mission to be over and unable to return to Portugal, joins the colonial government in Praia as the secretary of the governor, becoming sergeant major of the fortress of Ribeira Grande in the process. During this period, he continued to send a few dispatches of products from the island of Santiago (March 10th, 1789) and to organize his notes. Besides a short trip in February 1789 to São Nicolau, his goings-about the islands are unknown. The same year, he started a small operation in Portete (near Praia) where he experimented methods of drying fish for conservation; the results were published in a pamphlet entitled Relação da Factura do Peixe Seco (Roque & Torrão 2013). The governor Faria e Maia, convinced by his work, suggested to the minister that he should continue his research in Portuguese Guinea, but the authorization never came about. Thanks to the intervening of the new Governor José Teixeira Carneiro to the minister and also the help of his wife who made a plea to the Queen of Portugal D. Maria I, Feijó finally obtained order to return to Portugal in December 1795, and made it back in September 1796. HERBARIA OF THE EXPEDITION PlAnt collections oF 1783-1789 And mAnuscriPts In 1779, Vandelli (2008) wrote in his instruction pamphlet, Viagens Filosóficas that the “philosopher” looking for plants needed to survey all flora from every environment, from the coasts to the summits, through the wet areas and cultivated terrain. In this way, from the creeping moss to the tallest trees, specimens needed to be determined, classed or described according to the rules of Linnaean system (Fig. 10). The naturalists also needed to provide common names and any eventual medicinal uses. For small sized plants, one needed to gather them while in flower and fruit, with leaves, stems and roots at the same time. As for trees and shrubs, one or two fertile samples sufficed, including fruits and flowers either on the same branch, or separate. Once dried with help of a herbarium press, the specimens were then sent with their collecting numbers. The Breves Instrucções (ACL 1781) adds that for succulent species, it is not necessary to put them on plates but rather to preserve them in alcohol. There are also sections about collecting seeds and the roots of bulbous or tuberous plants. période qu’il rédige un fascicule contenant des nouveautés taxonomiques, intitulé Plantae Insulanae (Feijó, 1788).

3 • 2019 • 41 (12) Gardère M. et al. Following his list of shipment and his letters, Feijó collected the herbarium specimens during the first part of his stay in Cabo Verde between 1783 and 1789. He made a first herbarium on the island of Brava in 1783 where he collected 83 plants that he will list out of order. The same year, he made a second herbarium from Fogo of larger size, including 153 plants classed using Linnaean sexual system. From the beginning of his expedition, Feijó started working on a journal, to be entitled Itinerario Filosofico (Feijó 1783), using an epistolary style (Fig. 11). Through his letters with the Minister Martinho de Mello e Castro, he described his voyage from Lisbon to the islands and his exploration of Brava and Fogo, adding the lists of his first two herbaria. He also assembled seed, gums, and root collections and conjointly sent crates of living plants to the Museum of Ajuda, the state of which on their arrival to Lisbon is unknown. In 1784, while on mission on São Nicolau, Feijó mentioned sending off 24 dried plants without giving further details (Fig. 12A, B). The following year, while surveying Santo Antão, he will also make a cursory collection of 34 plants, catalogued out of order (Fig. 12C, D). The second expedition to Fogo in 1786-87, dedicated mainly to the observation of the recent volcanic eruption, was during a time period that the climate was favourable for vegetation growth. Feijó then told Mattiazzi and the Minister of his intention to stay on the island in order to make a new herbarium. As in his first expedition in 1783, he used the Linnaean sexual system to organize his list of 122 plants (Fig. 13) in which he separated out five taxonomic novelties (n°120-124) in a class entitled “Plantas novas” (New Plants) with a supplemental “Suplemento de Sementes” (Seed Supplement), a list of a collection of seeds from 25 different plants. In a shipment done in 1789 from Santiago, it is indicated that the year before Feijó had collected dragon tree resin and other plants, without further details. Even though he didn’t particularly like the Cabo Verdean creole, which he described as “ao riduculo crioulo do paiz” (Feijó 1813, 1815b), Feijó followed the instructions given by Vandelli and wrote down the most part of the common names of the plants on his lists. As for the sometimes misspelled scientific names, they were often limited to the genus level and only intermittently at the species level. Moreover, Feijó did not seem attentive to giving information on the areas that his collections were made except for the name of the island. In all of the lists of plants, the link between common and scientific names given by Feijó and the currently accepted scientific names were established thanks to an abundant bibliography (Chelmicki 1841; Costa e Andrade 1908; Cardoso 1902, 1905, 1915; Coutinho 1914; Chevalier 1935; Soares 1961; Barbosa 1961; Gomes 1994; Diniz et al. 2002) to which our own observations have been added (Gardère unpl. data); the list of collections from Brava, Fogo, and Santo Antão are presented in Appendix 1.

3 • 2019 • 41 (12) Gardère M. et al. Feijó were absent. In this way, many common names in creole could not be identified at the genus level, rather only at the family level like for example “Guarda Caminho” (Malvaceae) or “Dominginho” (Asteraceae). For others, classification was not possible at even the genus or family level, which is notably the case of “Alho bravo”, even though it was gathered several times by Feijó (Fogo and Santo Antão). On his second expedition to Fogo, Feijó identified one of his specimens as Euonymus L. (Celastraceae), spelled “Evonimus” however the genus has never been reported in the archipelago, or even its family. In Genera Plantarum (Linnaeus 1767) that Feijó used for his identifications, one can find in the same class and the same order (Pentandria Monogyna) the Sideroxylon L. (Sapotaceae) genus whose calix, corolla, stamens, and pistil are relatively close to those of Euonymus genus. Only the descriptions of the fruit and seed enable the sure separation of the two. Consequently, if he was unable to see fruits during his collections, or dissect the flowers, it would have been quite difficult to choose between the two genera. Feijó could not miss the Sideroxylon marginatum (Decne. ex Webb) Cout. an emblematic endemic species of Cabo Verde flora, with some scattered trees on Fogo (Lobin et al. 2005). It is interesting to note that a few creole names have been kept since 1783 like “Maria Xinga” (Desmodium sp., Fabaceae), “Piorno” (Lotus sp., Fabaceae), “Erva Cidreira” (Micromeria forbesii Benth., Lamiaceae), “Aipo” (Lavandula rotundifolia Benth., Lamiaceae) or “Funxo” (Tornabenea sp. or Daucus sp., Apiaceae). On the other hand, other creole denominations have completely disappeared and the taxonomical identification by Feijó has brought them back to life, such as “Murassa” (Helianthemum gorgoneum Webb, Cistaceae). An additional list of plants cited in articles (Feijó 1813, 1815b ) and noted in shipping lists (1784, 1786), is made in the Appendix 2. This list includes mainly some agricultural productions and plant matters (dye, tannin, oleaginous seed, gums and resins). Feijó And the linnAeAn system Feijó was one of the pioneering naturalists who, thanks to their voyages of discovery, broadened the horizons of botany. Access to exotic flora enables the taking into consideration of new morphological characteristics that would particularly help the progress of classification and delimitations of taxa. The first effects of these discoveries were to challenge existing classifications. As it happens, the end of the 18th century was a period of “classification crisis” (Daugeron 2009) where with the growth of collections – and therefore of information – contributed to the destabilization of the Linnaean system. Although adopted by many naturalists, the method was on its way voire impossible, d’assigner une détermination à une récolte notamment lorsque les identifications taxonomiques de Feijó étaient absentes. 3 • 2019 • 41 (12) Gardère M. et al. to exhaustion with the difficulty to integrate the newest discoveries, notably those from the tropics. About thirty years before the expedition of Feijó, across the sea from Cabo Verde on the African continent, Michel Adanson was already criticizing Linnaean sexual system on its inability to integrate African flora: “without any kind of advice, with only Natural History books those of Tournefort and Linnaeus which became absolutely useless because of the strange structures of the beings in this singular country” (Payer 1845). Adanson also criticized the arbitrary nature of the Linnaean system that failed to connect plants that seemed to present analogies (Chevalier 1934). All along his schooling as a naturalist, Feijó learned Linnaean botany through Vandelli, in his classes on “Natural Philosophy” at the University of Coimbra, then at the Museum of Ajuda and continued to use it during his “Philosophical Journey” to identify and organize his specimens. However, Vandelli (2008) did not try to reassure his students on the difficulties that they were to face, and forewarned those going to Brazil that: “The philosopher […] who voyages to Brazil, destitute of any help, will find himself in the midst of a new world, as little known as the day of its discovery”. Even though the richness of the flora is particularly considerable in South America, the quote fits for all the other colonies including Cabo Verde. Unlike to his naturalist colleagues who were up against strictly Neotropical (Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira) or Paleotropical (Joaquim José da Silva and Manuel Galvão da Silva) barely known flora, Feijó was confronted with Macaronesian flora with African and Mediterranean links notably in its endemic taxa (Sunding 1979; Brochmann et al. 1997). In contact with this original insular flora, barely explored at the time, Feijó was overwhelmed by the abundance of new, undescribed plants. Stuck with a refractory taxonomical method for exotic species, he quickly came up against the difficulty of identifying his specimens, as can be seen in the numerous shortfalls and inaccuracies in his lists of plants. However, it is certain that his lack of experience and of adequate references are partly responsible for the incorrect taxonomical interpretations. At the beginning of his expedition, his library principally contained works by Linnaeus (Cruz 2002), such as Genera Plantarum (Linnaeus 1767), Species Plantarum (Linnaeus 1753) and Systema Naturae (Linnaeus 1758, 1759). According to an illustration glued into one of his manuscripts he also had Reliquiae Houstounianae (Houstoun 1781) in his possessions. Isolated from the European community of naturalists, Feijó still managed to stay in contact with Portuguese scientists. In 1788, he was sent Florae Lusitanicae et Brasiliensis specimen (Vandelli 1788b) and also Jornal Encylopedico that happened to contain an article criticizing the Lusitanian flora of Vandelli (Paiva 1788). Feijó defended Vandelli by sending to the ACL an opinion letter entitled “Reflecções botanicas” that contested Paiva’s (1788) critiques but, unfortunately was never published (Moraes 2018). ce système allait s’épuiser progressivement face à la difficulté, voire à l’incapacité d’y intégrer les nouvelles découvertes, notamment celles provenant des zones tropicales.

THE FEIJÓ HERBARIUM: FROM CABO VERDE TO PARIS VIA LISBON royAl museum And botAnicAl gArden oF AjudA The collections of Feijó in Cabo Verde were regularly sent to the Museum of Ajuda, where Mattiazzi was in charge of receiving them. Vandelli (2008) instructed his naturalists to send to the Museum of Ajuda the specimens only accompanied by their sample numbers. The packages contained the herbaria were thus completely devoid of identifying labels.
133 The scientific expedition of João da Silva Feijó to the Cabo Verde Islands/L’expédition scientifique de João da Silva Feijó aux îles du Cap Vert ADANSONIA, sér. 3 • 2019 • 41 (12) According to Bocage (1862), the collections of the Museum of Ajuda were in state of great disorder; Ferreira found his plant collects sent from Brazil damaged, mixed up and with labels often missing or downright lost. Later, he will write (Bocage 1873: 297): “Unfortunately it seems that it was the custom in the cabinet of Ajuda to not put on the specimens any indications about their origin, not even simple labels noting their provenance”. After the death of Mattiazzi in 1794, Ferreira was named the acting director of the Museum of Ajuda (Daget & Saldanha 1989). The same year, he made the first inventory of all of the Natural History collections, and also of the artefacts, instruments and books (Ferreira 1794; Almaça 1996). This hand-written catalogue consequently contains the list of herbaria from Africa, Asia and South America but never cites those who collected it. Concerning the Cabo Verde collections, a few species are noted with “Cab. V.” or “Cab. Verde” and it is without a doubt that these come from Feijó. Back in Portugal in 1796, Feijó was reunited in the Museum of Ajuda with his schoolmate Ferreira and would organize his collections of Cabo Verde. In 1798, Link remarked the importance collections seized from the Museum, however modestly seize, and consulted the Feijó herbarium (Link & Hoffmansegg 1803): “there was a plant collection in a state of disrepair […] and seeds from some species of plants, with only the names that they had received in those islands”. Then in January 1799, the naturalist José Cornide y Saavedra (1734-1803) visited the Museum of Ajuda, he also found it small, though interesting and systematically organized (Simon 1983). After the seizing of the Natural History collections in Cabinets and Museums in Belgium and Holland (1794-95), in the Rhine region (1794-96), in Italy (1796-98), not to mention Bonaparte’s campaign in Egypt (1798-1801), Portugal (1803 and 1808) and to a lesser extent Austria (1809) were to meet the same fate (Kury 2008b; Daugeron 2009; Antunes 2011). The first wave of confiscations in the Museum of Ajuda was led by the French Ambassador to Lisbon, the General Jean Lannes (1767-1809) in 1803 and involved birds, shells and gold samples (Daget & Saldanha 1989; Almaça 1996). 134 ADANSONIA, sér. 3 • 2019 • 41 (12) Gardère M. et al. At the end of the year 1807, the Napoleonic troops of the Observation de la Gironde under the command of General Jean-Andoche Junot (1771-1813) briskly entered Spain and headed towards Lisbon. This historical event corresponds to the first Napoleonic invasion of Portugal (1807-1808). At that time, Portugal was considered a closed-off county, with a suspected wealth of natural resources accumulated over many years, to no benefit of Science (Hamy 1908). In a letter written to the Minister of the Interior, the professors of the Museum told of objects from Brazil and the African coast of “unfathomable rarity and beauty” (Hamy 1908). From January 1808, the Museum obtained authorization from the Emperor to send a naturalist to Portugal to “visit the Natural History collections said to be precious, and to examine which objects might be taken to Paris” (Crétet in Hamy 1908). Having been a part of the expeditionary corps of the Egyptian campaign a few years prior, the naturalist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1842) was put in charge of the mission, along with the assistant Pierre-Antoine Delalande (1787-1823). Leaving March 20th, 1808, they arrived in Lisbon after a long and perilous voyage around May 15th, 1808. Waiting to receive the approval of the General Junot, named a few months before the Duke of Abrantès, Geoffroy visited the Museum of Ajuda as a simple enthusiast. On his first visit, he was impressed by the richness of the collections. On May 23th, 1808 the Duke of Abrantès delivered his authorization to visit all museums, libraries and private cabinets of Natural History either they be public, belong to emigrants, or clerks (Fig. 25). The same day, Geoffroy was able to examine the herbaria of the Museum of Ajuda, and looked at collections from the coasts of Angola, the coasts of Africa, India and Brazil. He found virgin exotic herbaria, in bad state and of which some had never been opened. For example, one herbarium made in 1785 was still awaiting inventory (Hamy 1908). At first, relations with Vandelli were strained, but they improved when curator of Ajuda was assured that Geoffroy would only take the duplicates, of which there were many (Daget & Saldanha 1989). In this way, between the 10th of June and 12th of August 1808, the lists of objects to be taken to Paris were finally established (Fig. 26A, B, C). These archives are conserved at the AN in Paris but a detailed draft written by Geoffroy exists at the BC-MNHN (Fig. 26D). For the herbaria, it was a question of 2855 plants, or 65% of the specimens in the plant collection of the Museum of Ajuda (Almaça 1996). The Cabo Verde herbarium of Feijó, spelled “Feyo” by Geoffroy, is the second largest seized after Ferreira’s Brazilian one. Considering the Feijó herbarium, Geoffroy announced 562 plants divided into 12 bundles. In Lisbon, Geoffroy did not limit himself to the Museum of Ajuda, he also visited the convent of Nossa Senhora de Jesus and the noble emigrant the Duke de Cadaval’s library (Daget & Saldanha 1989; Antunes 2011). Once the Natural History collections seized and put into crates, Geoffroy could not wait to return to France.

22 . — Plantae Insulanae (Feijó, 1788), pages relating to the description of “Maia portulacifolia” identified under Talinum portulacifolium ; description of the genus “Maia”: A, page 122r; B, 122v; description of the species “Maia portulacifolia”: C, page 123v; D, Talinum triangulare (Jacq.) 138 ADANSONIA, sér. 3 • 2019 • 41 (12) Gardère M. et al. over the French army, the Convention of Cintra was going to be signed on August 30th, 1808, putting an end to the first Napoleonic invasion of Portugal. The convention insured the repatriation of French troops by the English navy, but also the restitution of goods that had been seized in Portuguese public establishments. Applying these dispositions, the new military governor of Lisbon, General Beresford and Commodore Proby, commissary for the evacuation of the French army, were against the taking of the seized collections at first. After much protest from Geoffroy, the English took to Vandelli for arbitration. It was thus decided that out of the 17 crates, four would be given back. Just before putting them aboard, the English would again try to stop him. Geoffroy asked the naturalist Joseph Banks (1744-1820) to intervene, but finally the dispute was quickly settled. On September 11th, 1808, authorization is given to load the 13 crates and one barrel onto the transporter Whitby, which was assigned to repatriate the French army, with Delalande also on-board for the voyage back. As for Geoffroy, he got aboard the frigate La Nymphe with the Duke of Abrantès; leaving September 22th, the ship arrived in La Rochelle on October 10th or 11th, 1808 (Daget & Saldanha 1989). Following the seizures at the Museum of Ajuda, Vandelli was accused of “afrancesado” (collaborating with the French) and sent into exile on the island of Terceira in the Azores, then to England (Carvalho 1872; Kury 2008b). Returning to Portugal in 1815, Vandelli died in Lisbon on June 27th, 1816 at the age of 81 (Brigola 2008). the collections in PAris The collections were delivered to the National Museum of Natural History in Paris on November 23th, 1808. As soon as November 25th, René Louiche Desfontaines (Professor of Botany) would present a report on the seized herbaria and the good state of conservation of the specimens, which were almost all fertile (Daget & Saldanha 1989). Each herbarium was then added into the “Herbier général” of the National Museum of Natural History, organized into their respective geographic area. Only the Cochinchina herbarium of the naturalist João de Loureiro (1710-1791), containing 92 species, was kept separate (Lourteig & Jovet 1997) in order to match it with his publication, Flora Cochinchinensis (Loureiro 1790). As for the seized manuscripts and collections relating to the mission of Geoffroy to Portugal, they are now conserved at the AN and BC-MNHN in Paris (Daugeron 2009; Daszkiewicz 2002; Laissus 1972). A copy of the catalogue of seized objects by Geoffroy made by the Duke of Abrantès is conserved at the AH-MUHNAC in Lisbon. In 1808, the Feijó herbarium was the first collection of plants from Cabo Verde for the Museum of Paris. For reasons unknown, the name of the collector is not mentioned on any of the herbarium specimens, and this goes for all of the collections brought back from Portugal by Geoffroy. The country of collection was thus the only information written on the herbaria. Beside the Loureiro herbarium, the Feijó herbarium was the only to receive a printed label indicating d’herbier et ceci vaut pour toutes les collections rapportées du Portugal par Geoffroy.

This label, probably added shortly before the visit of Webb to the Paris Museum, would condemn the collection to anonymity for several decades, notably in non-Portuguese speaking countries. ANALYSIS OF THE FEIJÓ HERBARIUM scientiFic use In Portugal, Bocage (1862) published the first information on the confiscated collections of Museum of Ajuda in 1808 and listed 562 plants in the “Cabo Verde herbarium made by J. da Silva Feijó”. Next it was his compatriot, the Count of Ficalho (1884) who, while recapitulating the various botanical expeditions in Cabo Verde, would cite the same number of plants in Feijó herbarium, as related in information passed on by Welwitsch. Cardoso (1902, 1905) also published a few lines on Feijó and that the herbarium was the Herbario Portuguez das Ilhas de Cabo Verde. In France, Lasègue (1845) wrote few works about him without referencing any herbarium specimens and misspelling his name “Freijó” and Vallot (1882) in his manual on the botanists of the African tropics, cited a collection from Cabo Verde brought back from Portugal by Geoffroy and noted “collector unknown”. Between 1833 and 1848, the naturalist Webb (17931854) whilst working on Macaronesian flora (Gay 1856; Parlatore 1856) consulted and identified a large part of the Feijó collections in the Paris Herbarium. Out of all 239 of his flora, Webb (1849) cited Feijó material for 81 species, in which 53 were described exclusively from the collection and 14 were taxa described as new by Webb (1849). The collector being unknown, Webb cited the Feijó specimens as “In herb. ins. Cap. Vir. (Mus. Reg. Par.)” and noted in his preface that the collection, according to a professor at the Museum of Paris, had probably been put together by the Portuguese Government. A year before the publication of Webb’s work, Deville who wanted to enrich his work on Macaronesian geology published a list of Cabo Verde plants in an appendix that Decaisne (1848) imparted. Based only on material from the Paris Herbarium and without mentioning the collector, the list of 180 species is almost entirely comprised of specimens brought back from Portugal in 1808, except for a specimen made by Hooker of Sapota marginata Decne. (synonym of Sideroxylon marginata (Decne.) Cout., Sapotaceae). In publishing this list, mainly based on of denominations made by Webb, Decaisne gives a rare look at Feijó herbarium as it existed in 1848. Schmidt (1852) and Cardoso (1915) cited Feijó material building on Webb’s work. However, Cardoso was the first to realise A B C D E fig. 24 . — Plantae Insulanae (Feijó 1788), pages relating to the description of “Willemea esculenta” identified under Grewia villosa ; description of “Willemea” genus: A, page 122v; B, page 123r; description of “Willemea esculenta”: C, page 123v; D, page 124r; E, flowering branch of Grewia villosa (photo: M. 146 ADANSONIA, sér. 3 • 2019 • 41 (12) Gardère M. et al. From certain specimens, it seems that Feijó had also collected on islands other than those cited in his archives, as can be seen in the unique specimen of Echium stenosiphon Webb subsp. stenosiphon (Boraginaceae) (P00571974), with characteristic leaves of the type subspecies, endemic to Monte Verde on São Vicente (Romeiras et al. 2011). Otherwise it is possible that Feijó gathered Pulicaria diffusa (Shuttlew.) Pett. (Asteraceae) (P00063028; P00063029) on Sal or Boavista, as it is an endemic species in Cabo Verde that characterizes the coastal vegetation of the two islands (Brochmann et al. 1997). As for the Portuguese plant collections, after the confiscations of Geoffroy in 1808 at the Museum of Ajuda, nothing more was recorded concerning the Cabo Verde herbarium. No botanist ever cited material collected by Feijó kept in a Portuguese nor even Brazilian Herbarium. Geoffroy had only taken duplicates specimens of the Ajuda Herbarium (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire 1808; Ferreira 1927). Until now, it was thought that only Ferreira and Vandelli herbaria still were present at LISU (University of Lisbon). Among the other herbaria from the “Philosophical Journeys”, the collection of Loureiro contained 37 plants (Gomes 1872), kept at the Museu da Academia Real das Ciências de Lisboa. Unfortunately in very bad condition, the collection has apparently disappeared (Candolle 1880) and it is not known what became of Feijó, J.J. da Silva and M. Galvão da Silva herbaria. In the archives of the BC-MNHN the “Catalogue des collections du Musée Royal d’Ajuda (1811-1813)” attributed to Brotero (1813) has been uncovered (research undertaken for this study). In this singular document, the herbaria present in the “Real Museo” are catalogued – including those of Cabo Verde – without mention of the collectors. It is the only proof, after the passing of Geoffroy in 1808, of the existence of specimens from Cabo Verde and thus probably Feijó herbarium. In 1836, all of the collections were transferred to the Museu da Academia Real das Sciencias de Lisboa then, in 1858, they were again transferred to the Escola Polytechnica de Lisboa (Ceríaco 2014), ancestor of the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência of Lisbon. However during the night of March 18th, 1978 a fire destroyed much of the collections of the Museum, notably those of zoology and the library (Daget & Saldanha 1989). The Feijó herbarium probably could have disappeared at the same time. But going through the LISU-Ferreira herbarium (research undertaken for this study), many of the specimens that were attributed to Ferreira seem to actually be the duplicates of the Feijó herbarium in Paris, 92 in all, as confirmed by the presence of species endemic and indigenous to the Cabo Verde Islands. Amongst the LISU specimens a taxon endemic to Cabo Verde, Centaurium tenuiflorum (Hoffm. & Link) Fritsch subsp. viridense (Bolle) A.Hansen & Sunding (Gentianaceae), is not represented in the Feijó collection of the Paris Herbarium, and was never identified in lists of plants from Brava or Fogo. This subspecies of gentian is endemic to the mountains of Brava and Fogo, but also Santiago, where Feijó could have found it.
147 The scientific expedition of João da Silva Feijó to the Cabo Verde Islands/L’expédition scientifique de João da Silva Feijó aux îles du Cap Vert ADANSONIA, sér. 3 • 2019 • 41 (12) CONCLUSION In total 431 herbarium specimens have been attributed to Feijó and these can be found mainly in Paris in the “Herbier général” and to a lesser extent in LISU-Ferreira, with a few specimens in IFAN, FI-Webb, K and B (Appendix 3). The number of herbarium specimens collected between 1783 and 1789 is hard to estimate. On the basis of the list of his collections from Brava (83), Fogo (153 + 122), Santo Antão (34) and São Nicolau (24), his collection totals 416 specimens (or 441 including 25 seeds collected in Fogo in 1786-87). However, we are now sure that not all of the lists of plants have been found and some of them are probably lost, because we have physical proof in the herbaria that Feijó collected on the island of São Vicente and very probably on Sal, Boavista and Santiago. With 218 species and despite the absence of chorological data, Feijó herbarium gives a glimpse of the flora of the Cabo Verde archipelago at the end of the 18th century. Contrary to what could be expected, almost all of the species collected or reported in Feijó’s manuscripts are still present today. The Feijó herbarium divided in majority between the Herbaria of Paris (P) and Lisbon (LISU) is now one of the best-known collections of all of the Philosophical Journeys. To ease the study, we made a non-continuously system of numerating it with Roman numerals, founded on the 24 classes of Linnaeus sexual system (Monandria I, Diandria II...) and on the different orders that make it up (Monogynia I, Digynia II...); followed by a non-continuous numeration, in Arabic numerals, for each species (Appendix 3). This system of numeration will enable to insert some potential specimens that had not been located in the herbaria. Moreover, for each specimen, a label has been made to indicate the scientific name of the taxon, the name of the collector (coll.: J. da Silva Feijó) followed by the new numeration in italic, the date of collection (1783-1789), the location (Cabo Verde), and in the header, the initial deposition in the herbarium before the confiscation of Geoffroy (ex Herbario Musei Regii et Horti Botanici Ajudensis). After his return to Portugal, Feijó was named sergeant-major of the Militias of the Captaincy of Ceará in Brazil in 1799, and his main objective was to explore the saltpetre mines. Moreover, he took on the role of naturalist and responsible of the saltpetre extraction laboratories between 1799 and 1805 (Pereira 2010). In parallel with his work as a mineralogist, Feijó dedicated himself to the study the fauna and flora of Ceará (Silva 2007). Occasionally, he sent seeds to the Royal Botanical Garden of Ajuda and to Berlin in Prussia (Lopes et al. 2005). In 1811, Feijó was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel, attached to the 1st Regiment of the Calvary of the Militias of the Ceará Captaincy. Around 1818, Feijó returned to Rio de Janeiro, undertook the writing of Flora Cearense (Pereira & Santos 2012), a work that will unfortunately never make it past the phase of manuscript. In 1822, he became lieutenant colonel of the Corps of Engineers and professor of Natural History in the Royal Military Academy of Rio de Janeiro (Lopes & Silva 2003). He died in the same city on March 24th, 1824 (Nogueira 1888). Around thirty years later, in 1857 his memoir on the eruption of the “Pico” Volcano in 1784 was re-published posthumously (Feijó 1857).
3 • 2019 • 41 (12) Gardère M. et al. In general, the “Philosophical Journeys” were not a great scientific success. The collections sent back by the naturalists accumulated in the Ajuda Natural History Museum, without being distinguished in scientific publications. Besides Florae Lusitanicae et Brasiliensis specimen of Vandelli (1788b) founded on his own herbarium and those of Miranda Vellozo, as well as Flora Fluminensis of Vellozo (1829), all of the work of Vandelli disciples never made it past the level of manuscripts and were, for but a few, published only much later. Feijó was thus one of the only naturalists to succeed in publishing a few memoirs during his lifetime, observations and reports of his “Philosophical Journey” in his Memórias Económicas da Academia Real das Sciencias de Lisboa (Feijó 1789b, 1815a, b) and in the Brazilian journal O Patriota (Feijó 1813). In this way, between the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century the results of these exploratory missions were hard to access or completely inaccessible to the European scientific community and the collections remained unknown until the arrival of Geoffroy in 1808. Acknowledgements This article is dedicated to the memory of lieutenant colonel João da Silva Feijó, pioneer of the scientific exploration of the Cabo Verde archipelago. We would like to extend our thanks to C. Gonçalves and M. Pignal (MNHN-P), A. C. Roque and M. M. Torrão (University of Lisbon) and W. Lobin (BONN) who gave us precious bibliography; to the Lisbon Academy of Science (ACL) and the Lisbon Museum of Natural History (MUNHAC) that provided us with high-resolution illustrations; to C. Aupic, T. Deroin et J. Florence (MNHN-P) for their valuable commentary concerning the manuscript; to W. Greuter (BGBM-B) for his help with the botanical nomenclature and D. Geffard-Kuriyama from the Atelier d’Iconographie Scientifique (UMS 2700 2AD CNRS MNHN) for preparing the illustrations. We would also like to thank C. De manière générale, les Voyages Philosophiques n’ont pas été une réussite scientifique.
