Objec i es: This s udy assessed he de elopmen o den inal mic oc acks ollowing oo
canal ea men using synch o on adia ion-based mic o-compu ed omog aphy (SR-
mic oCT).
Me hods: Twen y ex ac ed mola s (10 maxilla y and 10 mandibula ) we e selec ed,
scanned, and e alua ed o he p esence o den inal mic oc acks a 3 expe imen al imes:
Day 1/baseline ( ee h we e in ac ); Day 2/a e oo canal cleaning and shaping; and Day
3/a e oo canal ob u a ion. Mic oc acks we e dened as all c ack lines obse ed in he
c oss-sec ional iew ex ending om he canal lumen o he den in/cemen um. Tee h we e
p epa ed using P oTape Gold® o a y ins umen s (Den sply, Si ona) and ob u a ed using
he cold la e al compac ion echnique wi h gu a-pe cha poin s and zinc oxide-based
seale . SR-mic oCT a he 05ID-2 beamline a he Canadian Ligh Sou ce wi h a 46 keV
monoch oma ic X- ay beam was used o scan he samples. CT econs uc ion o he
samples was p ocessed using he so wa e UFO-KIT and he 3D and c oss-sec ional images
we e independen ly analysed wi h ImageJ so wa e by wo ained and calib a ed
examine s o de ec he p esence o den inal mic oc acks. Da a was desc ip i ely epo ed
( equency and pe cen ages).
Resul s: Fi e mic oc acks appea ed in 3 mola s a e cleaning & shaping (Day-2). Th ee new
mic oc acks (one in each mola ) appea ed in dis inc samples a e ob u a ion (Day 3). The
majo i y o mic oc acks in he maxilla y mola s we e loca ed in he mesiobuccal oo , and
hal o he mic oc acks in mandibula mola s we e loca ed in he mesial oo .
Conclusions: Roo canal ea men may induce he c ea ion o e y ew mic oc acks in
mola oo s which may no be clinically ele an because a cumula i e-nega i e eec o
oo canal p ocedu es was no obse ed (since he mic oc acks appea ed in some samples
a e shaping and in die en samples a e ob u a ion). A complex canal ana omy was
linked wi h de ec s o ma ion. SR-Mic oCT may be conside ed he op imal ool o his ype
o in es iga ion.
