They are typically designed to hydrate, exfoliate, brighten, and maintain soft, rosy lips by using beetroot's bioactive compounds such as betalains (natural pigments) and antioxidants. The rising preference for safe and reliable natural products has increased the use of herbal-based cosmetics, particularly among women. Synthetic colouring agent in conventional cosmetics are linked to harmful effects, including carcinogenicity, which has driven research into herbal alternatives. This study focused on preparing and evaluating herbal lipsticks using natural colour sources such as carrots, beetroot, turmeric, tomato, pomegranate, and cocoa. Additional ingredients like beeswax, castor oil, paraffin, vitamin E, fruit essences, and lemon juice were incorporated for stability and quality. The formulated herbal lipsticks were tested key parameters including colour, texture, PH, melting and breaking points, surface anomalies, aging, and fragrance stability. Introduction Cosmetics are substance designed to cleanse, protect and enhance the appearance of the human body. They encompass a wide variety of products, including creams, lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks, nail polishes, makeup, hair care products, and personal hygiene formulations. Globally, cosmetic usage has significantly increased due to rising awareness of beauty and personal care, with a particularly strong demand of herbal cosmetics. which are consider safer alternative to synthetic preparation. Herbal cosmetics, derived from natural ingredients, are gaining popularity owing to their minimal side effects and alignment with the growing preference for natural based products. historically human beings have relied on herbs for medicine and beautification. although the advancement of modern science and synthetic products once reduced their use, there has been a resurgence in herbal based formulation for both healthcare and cosmetics. Lip colouring, an ancient practice dating back to prehistoric times, remains one of the most widely used cosmetics application. Today, lipsticks are available in hundreds of shades and texture to meet diverse consumer preference. However, they have also drawn scrutiny because pigments and synthetic components may enter the body through ingestion during use, posing potential health hazards. Scope The scope of beetroot lip mask capsules is extensive within the natural cosmetics and personal care sector. As consumers increasingly seek products free from synthetic chemicals, these capsules fulfill the demand for clean-label, plant-based solutions that offer multiple benefits such as hydration, antioxidant protection, and natural lip tinting. Beetroot lip masks serve both cosmetic and therapeutic purposes by providing moisture and nourishment to dry, chapped lips while incorporating antioxidants that help defend against environmental damage and signs of aging. Their natural hue from beetroot pigment appeals to users looking for gentle, chemical-free color. Market trends indicate strong growth for natural, multifunctional lip care products driven by consumer preference for herbal ingredients and sustainable formulations. There is room for product innovation combining beetroot extract with other natural oils and vitamins targeting specific lip concerns like pigmentation, dryness, and fine lines. Research opportunities exist to optimize extraction and formulation techniques to enhance efficacy, pigment stability, and product safety. Clinical validation could further boost product acceptance. Commercially, the global demand for lip masks is rising rapidly, with projections showing steady growth fueled by consumers’ growing investment in skincare routines and preference for natural, organic cosmetics. Beetroot lip mask capsules align well with these trends, enjoying potential in domestic and international markets focused on holistic wellness and natural beauty products. Thus, the scope covers cosmetic innovation, consumer health trends, research development, and promising market growth opportunities in the booming natural and herbal personal care industry. Aim The purpose of developing beetroot lip mask capsules is to create a natural and effective product designed to care for the lips by providing essential hydration, nourishment, and protection. This formulation utilizes beetroot extract, which is abundant in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, contributing to moisturizing and healing properties while also offering a gentle, natural color to enhance lip appearance. Beetroot’s rich composition supports lip health by preventing dryness and soothing delicate skin. Objectives The primary objectives of formulating beetroot lip mask capsules are to create a natural product that effectively moisturizes and nourishes the sensitive skin of the lips through the benefits of beetroot extract, which contains valuable antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. • This formulation aims to soothe and protect lips from dryness and external aggressors, promoting healing of minor lip conditions. Another key objective is to utilize beetroot's natural pigments to give the lips a subtle, attractive color without relying on synthetic dyes, offering a safe cosmetic benefit. • The product also intends to enhance the overall formulation by blending beetroot with natural emollients such as beeswax, coconut oil, vitamin E, and almond oil, improving hydration, texture, and durability. • Evaluation of the lip mask capsules is fundamental to ensure optimal physical characteristics, user satisfaction, and therapeutic efficacy while maintaining safety standards. • The development of this chemical-free, eco-conscious lip care option is designed to meet consumer demand for herbal, sustainable cosmetic alternatives. • Additionally, the formulation process aims to optimize pigment stability and moisturizing performance, delivering consistent quality and multifunctional benefits for regular lip care use. Beet root Beetroot extract is a safe, natural ingredient widely used in cosmetics for its pigment, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and nourishing properties. It offers an effective, eco-friendly alternative in herbal skincare formulations to promote healthier, more vibrant lips and skin. • Botanical Name: Beta vulgaris • Kingdom: Plantae • Family: Amaranthaceae (previously Chenopodiaceae) • Genus: Beta • Common Name: Beetroot, Bee • tClass: Magnoliopsida • Order: Caryophyllales Figure 1 Beetroot 1.4. Ingredient profile Beetroot extract or juice (providing natural color, antioxidants, phytochemicals like betalains, flavonoids, polyphenols, saponins, and minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium). Carrier oils such as coconut oil or almond oil (moisturizing and nourishing the lips). Beeswax (for texture, gloss, hardness, and locking in moisture). Vitamin E (antioxidant and stability agent) Optional additives like rose water or rose essence (for fragrance), honey (for moisturization), shea butter, cocoa butter, lanolin, or castor oil. Additional emollients and natural waxes such as carnauba wax, jojoba oil, sunflower seed oil, olive leaf extract are sometimes included in commercial formulations for enhanced softness and antioxidant benefits. 1.4.1. Equipments • Double boiler or heatproof bowl with a saucepan • Grater (to grate fresh beetroot if using raw beetroot rather than powder) • Cheese cloth or coffee filter (for straining beetroot juice or oil infusion) • Small mixing bowls (for combining ingredients). • Spatula or stirring utensil (to mix thoroughly) . • Lip balm or lip mask containers (to pour and set the final product) • Sieve or fine mesh strainer (optional for filtering beetroot extract) • Heat-resistant beakers or cups (to hold hot mixtures safely) . Method of preparation The preparation of beetroot lip mask capsules involves a natural formulation process to produce a moisturizing, tinted lip care product. Start by washing fresh beetroot and finely grating it. Extract the juice by pressing the grated beetroot through a clean cloth or cheesecloth to obtain clear juice. Measure approximately 60 ml of this fresh beetroot juice and combine it with about 30 grams of coconut oil in a heatresistant container. Gently warm the mixture over low heat, stirring intermittently until the juice begins to caramelize lightly, then reduce the heat to prevent burning. Meanwhile, melt a blend of beeswax and cocoa butter (or alternative emollients like almond oil or lanolin) using the double boiler method. Once melted, carefully blend this wax and butter mixture into the warm beetroot and coconut oil blend, stirring steadily to create a smooth, uniform mixture. Add vitamin E oil, acting as a natural antioxidant and moisturizer, mixing thoroughly to integrate it evenly. Pour the final mixture into sterile lip balm containers or molds. Allow it to cool and solidify, which can be accelerated by refrigeration for about half an hour After solidification, stir the lip mask gently to ensure a consistent texture, then seal the container securely for storage Pour the final mixture into sterile lip balm containers or molds. Physical Evaluation • Color: The lip mask capsule should have a uniform and natural color derived from beetroot pigments (betalains), typically a pinkish-red hue, without separation or unevenness of pigment. • Texture and Consistency: The texture should be smooth, free from lumps or graininess, and the consistency should allow easy application—firm enough to hold shape but soft enough to spread easily on lips. • Melting Point: Determined by melting point apparatus; typical melting points range between 63°C and 75°C depending on formulation ingredients like beeswax. • Spreadability: Assesses how easily and uniformly the lip mask spreads on the lips without breaking or fragmenting during application • Physical Appearance: Includes examination of the homogeneity and presence of any coarse particles or phase separation. 1.6.2. Chemical Evaluation • PH Measurement: Usually near neutral (around 6.0), measured by dissolving the lip mask sample in water and using a pH meter; ensures minimal risk of irritation.Stability Studies: Conducted at different temperatures (e.g., 4°C, 25°C, 40°C) to assess changes in color, odor, melting point, and spreadability over time ensuring product shelf life. • Antioxidant Activity: Using assays like DPPH to evaluate the free radical scavenging capacity, reflecting the protective effects of beetroot’s bioactive compounds. 1.6.3. Biological Evaluation • Skin Irritation Test: To confirm the lip mask is non-irritant and safe for use on sensitive lip skin. • Moisturization & Hydration Effect: Evaluated by testing how long the product can keep lips hydrated and soft without greasiness, often using in vivo or in vitro methods • Microbial Contamination: Ensuring the product is free from microbial contamination for safety and shelf stability • Organoleptic Properties Assessment of color, odor (pleasant fragrance if essential oils are added), taste, and overall aesthetic appeal World Journal of Biology Pharmacy and Health Sciences, 2025, 24(02), 095-099 99 2. Result and Discussion The extensive research indicates that beetroot-based lip products, whether in capsule or balm form, are effective, natural, and safe alternatives to chemical-laden cosmetics. Regular use enhances lip hydration, imparts a natural rosy tint, and promotes healing of damaged lips. Formulating beetroot with other natural oils and emollients further boosts their efficacy, making them suitable for daily skincare routines and targeted lip pigmentation treatments. 3. Conclusion Phytochemicals are a heterogeneous group of compounds found in all plants. They constitute an important role in cosmeceuticals. The herbal lip Mask formulation was prepared by keeping in view to develop a lip mask using herbal ingredients with a hope to minimize the side effects as produced by the available synthetic ones.
