The CDS in the landscape of the Open Science

Lesteven, Soizick

Abstract

The Strasbourg astronomical Data Centre (CDS) is dedicated to the collection and worldwide distribution of astronomical data and related information since it was set up in 1972. These CDS services have been gradually extended to respond to the needs of the international astronomical community, taking into account the evolution of science and anticipating the very fast changes of the technology at each stage. The long-term and active collaborations between astronomy journals, data centres, telescope archives and space agencies have lead to relatively efficient connections between different services and tools for the benefit of the astronomy community. A key element of interoperability is the Virtual Observatory. The CDS services are the result of a major team work effort. A team in which different professions work together and complement each other, with skills that are evolving continuously to ensure all these expectations. In recent years, a new dynamic has developed in which national and international open science initiatives are driving fast changes in the global data sharing landscape. We will present the CDS in the context of these new initiatives highlighting the opportunities and the challenges.
