User Engagement: Strategy, Methods, and Applications for any Library at any Scale

Parks, Eden; Black, Morgan; Hargis, Hilary

Abstract

All libraries have the potential to enhance user engagement utilizing existing resources. Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and the United States Naval Observatory Library (USNO) will each share their distinctive approaches to a common goal: increasing the impact of library services and materials. While their strategies are similar in concept, each library applies them in unique ways that are shaped by institutional context, guidelines, and resources. STScI and USNO librarians will outline how they assess and strengthen user engagement, taking into account scale, budget, staffing, and other available resources. LISA attendees will learn about adaptable, practical approaches for improving engagement, including expanding remote access to collections, identifying service gaps, and integrating libraries more effectively into staff onboarding processes. These examples will offer scalable solutions that can be tailored to different library environments. This talk would be co-presented with Hilary Hargis (STScI) and Morgan Black (USNO).
