The Unified Astronomy Thesaurus as a Platform for LIS Training in Scientific Knowledge Organization

Stahlman, Gretchen

Abstract

The Unified Astronomy Thesaurus as a Platform for LIS Training in Scientific Knowledge Organization §Talk abstract: The Unified Astronomy Thesaurus (UAT) is an open, community-developed controlled vocabulary that provides a rich semantic framework for organizing concepts in astronomy, planetary science, and heliophysics. Integrated with platforms such as the SciX and observatory proposal systems, the UAT supports the discoverability and interoperability of scholarly resources across the research lifecycle. Its polyhierarchical structure and dynamic, community-governed nature make it an ideal platform for experiential learning in Library and Information Science (LIS). This talk will describe a pilot internship program that is currently utilizing the UAT as a training ground for LIS students. The presentation will also explore the potential for broader implementation across programs and institutions for education in metadata, thesauri, research data curation, and open science infrastructure. By engaging with the real-world challenges of maintaining a domain-specific vocabulary - such as integrating new concepts, navigating AI-assisted classification, ensuring semantic interoperability, and engaging with research communities - students can gain hands-on experience in contemporary knowledge organization. This approach not only enhances student learning but also addresses the evolving demands on astronomy libraries, which increasingly intersect with research support, digital infrastructure, and data stewardship. The UAT exemplifies how LIS education can align
