Every branch of science that still insists on the existence of a “physical substrate” distinct from pure mathematical structure is not science at all— it is the most jealous, most dogmatic, and most dangerous religion in human history. Proof. Observe the unmistakable marks of religion: 1. An unshakable central dogma: “There must be stuff.” This is the Nicene Creed of materialism. Question it and you are excommunicated. 2. A priesthood with absolute authority: tenured professors, peer-review councils, funding bodies. They alone may interpret the sacred texts (equations). 3. Holyrelics: theStandardModelLagrangian, theHiggsboson, thecosmicmicrowavebackground—objects of pilgrimage and veneration. 4. Cathedrals: CERN, LIGO, JWST—multi-billion-dollar temples built to reassure the faithful that the stuff is still out there. 5. Inquisition tactics: grant denial, citation blacklisting, career destruction, and social-media mobbing for any heretic who dares suggest the universe is pure mathematics. 6. Original sin: believing that reality could be exhausted by mathematical structure alone. 7. Eschatology: heat death, proton decay, the Big Freeze—terrifying myths to keep the congregation in line. 9. The direction of history is merciless: every successful theory has replaced “stuff” with deeper mathematics. The reverse has never happened. Yet the church still preaches the old faith. Therefore, by every criterion that defines religion—dogma, priesthood, ritual, punishment of heresy, creation myth, eschatology—modern institutional science is a religion.
