(1963). Sonlar — mavjudotlarga hisoblash, tasniflash, ma’lumotni ifodalash hamda turli tillarda sonlarning qanday ifodalanishi va shakllanishidagi farqlarni o‘lchovli tarzda yetkazish imkonini beruvchi umumiy kommunikativ vositadir. O‘zbek va ingliz tillari o‘ziga xos madaniy va hududiy omillarga ko‘ra keng qo‘llanadi, bu esa birlik va ko‘plik kategoriyalarining ma’nosi hamda nutq tarkibidagi o‘xshashlik va farqlarning idrokini kengaytiradi. Ushbu maqolada o‘zbek va ingliz tillarida son kategoriyasining grammatik xususiyatlari hamda ularning qo‘llanish usullari tahlil qilinadi. Garchi o‘zbek va ingliz tillari turli til oilalariga mansub bo‘lsa-da, ikkisi ham birlik va ko‘plikni ifodalash uchun o‘ziga xos grammatik mexanizmlardan foydalanadi. German tillariga mansub ingliz tili ko‘plikni shakllantirishda unli almashinuvi, muntazam qo‘shimchalar va tarixan saqlanib qolgan noaniq shakllardan foydalanadi. O‘zbek tilida esa ko‘plik qo‘shimchasining asosiy shakli -lar bo‘lib, u sintaktik tuzilmalar va kontekstual belgilar orqali xilma-xillik, hurmat, umumlashtirish yoki kinoya ma’nolarini kuchaytirishi mumkin. Tadqiqotda Edvard Seppir, Jozef Grinberg, Bernard Komri, Otto Yespersen hamda G‘. Abdurahmonov va A. Madvaliev kabi o‘zbek tilshunoslarining nazariy yondashuvlari asosida sonlarning morfologik, sintaktik va uslubiy xususiyatlari ko‘rib chiqiladi. Shuningdek, maqolada til o‘rganuvchilar uchun pedagogik jihatlar, uchrashi mumkin bo‘lgan qiyinchiliklar va son kategoriyalarini samarali o‘qitish usullari ham yoritiladi. In English there are two numbers: singular and plural 4 . The crucial indication of singularity of noun is that there is no kind of extra morpheme. " The bat smashed into my face with such force" 5 For both communicative and cognitive goals, numbers are an essential part of human language. According to Edward Sapir (1921), language both reflects and changes how people arrange and interpret reality. According to this viewpoint, numbers represent cultural trends, language advancements over history, and cognitive classification in addition to just counting objects. English is a Germanic language that has complicated rules for making plurals because it has borrowed and changed a lot over the years. Uzbek, on the other hand, is an agglutinative Turkic language that uses a logical morphological strategy as well as syntactic and stylistic strategies. In plural noun is that -s morpheme is added, when we compare with Uzbek language it is also the same, nouns which are utilized in singular and plural formality are named "otlarda son" . For instance, kitob-singular, kitoblar-plural. 6 Even with these differences, both languages show how language systems, culture, and cognition are all connected by serving the universal purpose of communicating plurality and uniqueness. According to Joseph Greenberg and Bernard Comrie, all languages classify numbers, though they do so in different ways. English has a lot of morphological complexity due to historical forms and inconsistencies, whereas Uzbek uses stylistic and contextual subtleties to counterbalance morphological simplicity. Otto 4 Iriskulov A.T. Theoritical Grammar of English.T.:"Nashriyot", 2006. p 22 5 Clear J. Atomic habits. T.: New York, 2018 p 5 6 Erkaboyeva N. Abdusattorova X. Comprehending these distinctions is essential for both linguistic theory and language instruction, particularly when students are transferring knowledge from one language to another. The study of number categories is important from a theoretical and practical standpoint because misinterpretation of plural rules can result in grammatical mistakes and misunderstandings. Although the basic rule for forming plurals in English seems straightforward-simply add /-s/ the reality is more complex. English spelling and pronunciation patterns require several different plural endings, and this often confuses learners. For nouns ending in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -o, the plural is usually formed by adding -es, as in bus-buses, box-boxes, or church-churches. The additional syllable makes pronunciation smoother, preventing awkward consonant clusters. These rules are rooted in the phonological history of English, where older forms required extra sounds to ensure the word flowed naturally in speech. Another pattern appears with nouns ending in -y. When -y follows a vowel, forming the plural is simple: toy -toys 7 , key-keys. However, if -y follows a consonant, it changes to -ies, giving us city-cities or strawberrystrawberries. 8 . This shift is not merely a spelling convention-it reflects a historical tendency to maintain consistent vowel sounds when the ending changes, preventing the word from becoming harder to pronounce. Despite these patterns, learners still encounter difficulties because English contains many exceptions. Words like “tomato” and “potato” follow the -es rule (tomatoes, potatoes), but other nouns ending in -o, such as piano or photo, simply take -s. These inconsistencies resulted from different borrowing periods in English history: some words entered the language through Latin or Italian, others through Greek or French, and each brought its own spelling habits. Over time, English preserved many of these older conventions, creating a mix of predictable rules and stubborn irregularities. Additionally, pronunciation complicates matters. The plural -s can sound like /s/, /z/, or /ɪz/ depending on the final sound of the noun. For example, cats ends with /s/, dogs ends with /z/, and buses ends with /ɪz/. Students often memorize the spelling changes but struggle to match them with the correct pronunciation, especially if their native language does not use similar sound distinctions. Altogether, forming plurals in English is more than just adding a letter. It reflects layers of history, pronunciation patterns, and exceptions that have accumulated over centuries. Understanding these patterns—and the reasons behind them—helps learners not only spell plural nouns correctly but also appreciate the rich and sometimes unpredictable nature of English orthography. Modern English there are some non-productive types of plural number, as for instance: a) suffix - en : ox - oxen b) variation of vowels in the root of a word: tooth-teeth; goose-geese; mouse-mice; man-men, c) variation of vowels of the root + suffix- "ren" children; d) homonymous forms for both sing and plural: sheep-sheep, deer-deer. 9 "Minerva, I need you to go and wake the other Weasley children". 10 7 Jenny Dooley. The extremely productive regular plural marker -s is in line with what linguist Charles Hockett (1958) called "morphological economy," which holds that languages prefer simple, consistent forms. However, there are some historically grounded anomalies in English, many of which are related to Old English's Germanic heritage. The ancient Germanic umlaut process is the source of vowel alternation in forms like goose-geese or tooth-teeth. What Otto Jespersen called "fossilized remnants" of earlier morphological systems are reflected in irregular plural forms like children (root vowel variation + ren suffix) or invariant plurals like sheep and deer. In contrast, Uzbek plural formation employs a far more visible and consistent method. The suffix -lar is attached to almost all nouns, regardless of their phonetic ending or semantic class. Its output is in line with Uzbek's agglutinative style, where affixes are used to add grammatical meanings in a linear fashion while maintaining their individual functions. However, the pragmatic and artistic functions of -lar, which transcend mere plurality, are what set Uzbek apart. -lar can indicate sarcasm (O'zlari kelibdilar-ku!), diversity, emotional emphasis, or even respect (Siz keldingizlar), as noted by Karimov (1995) and Bozorov (2012) 11 . Uzbek's functional flexibility indicates that it depends on both structural grammar and context-driven meaningmaking processes. Another significant area of diversity is noun-modifier relations. The boy runs vs. The boys run is an example of how verb agreement and noun number marking are tightly connected in English. However, the verb in Uzbek often does not represent number unless it is pragmatically required. For example, the verb form is used in both Bola keldi ("The child came") and Bolalar keldi ("The children came"). This difference highlights the typological differences between English, a syntactic language where word order and agreement are crucial, and Uzbek, a morphologically rich, agglutinative language that primarily depends on affixation and contextual inference. Furthermore, plural forms in Uzbek often become unnecessary when quantifiers or numbers are used. Because the quantifier already implies multiplicity, phrases like ko'p odam or uchta kitob don't require additional plural marking. But both are necessary for English: three books and a lot of people. Languages with rich morphology generally avoid needless pluralization when numbers carry the semantic weight, according to Greenberg's (1963) linguistic universals. Numbers are used in both languages for cognitive and cultural reasons, as well as structural differences. Strong grammatical distinctions between countable and uncountable nouns are frequently maintained in English cultures, resulting in more rigid categorization. However, for stylistic purposes, abstract or mass nouns like dardlar, xotiralar, and quvonchlar are sometimes pluralized in Uzbek. If we draw an analogy with Uzbek language, Nouns in Uzbek are pluralized using morphological and syntactic techniques. Nouns are morphologically modified by adding the plural suffix -lar. In syntax, pluralization is represented by putting adverbs that indicate degree or 10 Rowling.K.J. Harry Potter. " Bloomsburrg Publishing",1997. p 471 11 Abdurahmonov, G‘. (1992). Additionally, the Uzbek suffix -lar has stylistic purposes in addition to syntactic ones. The suffix in these situations serves purposes outside than its basic grammatical function. Here are a few instances that demonstrate these applications: 1. Expression of respect: phrases show respect when the suffix is used before the firstand second-person possessive ends:"Domla bormilar?". 12 2.It amplifies the meaning of abstract words or uniquely utilized bodily parts:..."U ko'zlarini yumgan edi, nazarida yana o'sha chol paydo bo'ldi".... 3. Generalization and aggregation: It signals collective meaning or generalization as well:..."Yor vaslini xiyobondan izlagan majnunlarning sarguzashtlari xayolimda jonlandi"... 4. Sarcasm or mockery: Sarcasm or mocking can be conveyed with the suffix. "O'zlari ham kelibdilar-da". 5. Diversity or variety: It denotes diversity or various sorts when it is affixed to uncountable nouns: 13 " Sirojiddin har tanaffusda o'qituvchilar xonasining eshigiga bordi-yu, ichkariga mo'ralashga botinolmadi" 14 The itemized analysis reveals both similarities and variations between the Uzbek and English grammatical categories.Naturally, as mentioned, numbers also differ in their morphological structure. For people learning English, it can currently be a little challenging to understand this difference. Despite being a basic and universal grammatical category in all languages, numbers differ greatly in their morphological, syntactic, and stylistic presentation. Regular suffixes, irregular forms maintained from ancient Germanic roots, and vowel alternations are some of the tactics used in English pluralization. Students must pay close attention to trends and exceptions because of this morphological intricacy. In contrast, Uzbek uses a single productive suffix—lar—for plural creation, supplemented with contextual clues and grammatical structures that express subtleties like variety, respect, generalization, and sarcasm. The comparison shows how each language strikes a balance between flexibility and clarity. Uzbek places more emphasis on semantic and pragmatic interpretation in addition to grammatical marking, whereas English depends on rigid morphological rules and agreement between nouns and verbs. These variations show how language structure, cognitive functions, and cultural behaviors interact. Furthermore, comprehending these differences is crucial for both linguistic analysis and real-world applications, especially in cross-linguistic research and language instruction.
