Jahagirdar, Sameera

Abstract

A presentation delivered at the Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress 2023, chronicling the personal and professional journey of a transgender physician from India to the United Kingdom. The presentation traces a decade-long trajectory (2011-2023) covering: - Self-acceptance and initial medical transition (2011): Navigating medicalized procedures, workplace secrecy, and mental health support- Coming out at workplace (2014): Catalyzed by India's landmark NALSA Judgment recognizing transgender rights; establishment of Gender Health Team leadership- Organizing gender reassignment surgery (2016): Development of protocolized care and workplace education at MGMCRI Pondicherry- Trans-activism journey (2019): Medical textbook review through SAATHII Project VISTAARA, PAN card advocacy, and nationwide sensitization of healthcare professionals- Migration to UK (2020): Transition to NHS intensive care medicine Presentation examines unique challenges faced in the UK healthcare system including rigid binary gender choices in professional registration (GMC), lack of support mechanisms for transgender doctors facing discrimination, prolonged waiting times for gender-affirming procedures, and gaps in medical curriculum addressing LGBTQ+ health issues scientifically. Also addresses mental health challenges as both immigrant and transgender healthcare worker during COVID-19 pandemic, including access to queer-affirmative mental health support and relationship issues for trans non-binary people. Concludes with new professional directions in UK context: diversity and inclusion initiatives, global health teaching series, foundation trainee education, sensitization workshops, and visible advocacy within critical care medicine. The presentation illustrates how lived experience as transgender physician informs both clinical practice and educational leadership across two healthcare systems.
