Critique of rankings (uniko) 16 https://uniko.ac.at/themen/rankings/ (machine-translated with DeepL) “Regardless of the importance that individual institutions attach to the various university rankings and the individual conclusions that are drawn from the results, it can generally be said that university rankings provide a limited and sometimes distorted picture of the performance of Austrian universities and their staff. Nevertheless, they are taken into account by stakeholders and promote international visibility. Austrian universities do not consider rankings to be a suitable internal management or performance evaluation tool and explicitly do not base their university tasks and strategies on the results of individual rankings. Based on the results of recent years, the University of Vienna shows a very positive development, and we are proud that—thanks in part to stronger reputation scores—we have made it into the top 100 for the first time this year. A strong performance in rankings is crucial for our strategic partnerships, as well as for successful recruiting. International leading scholars consider ranking positions when contemplating an appointment in Vienna, just as international students who are considering pursuing studies in one of our international master's programs or at a doctoral school. We are aware, that the budget is the most important lever to improve our rankings, which is why the university's leadership discusses this at the political level. Furthermore, as a university, we can also influence rankings through our reputation. For instance, in the case of THE World University Ranking, which is very important to us due to its international visibility, as well as the subject rankings published by THE, a university's reputation is of great significance.
