Natural processes Human dimension Why?
Why? Data in Earth System Science - divergent, complex, huge! ●different data types model output, observations, simulations, measurements ●different formats NetCDF (HDF5), GeoTIFF, GRIB, GeoJSON, ASCII/CSV or frameworks like GIS, tabular data, text, images ●different sizes / granularity level from PB in radio astronomy and climate model output to MB in samples in Biology
●collaborative approach ESS is collaborative by design ●data open for all! at least in principle… ●federated systems Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF): open source effort providing robust, distributed data and computation platform Why? Data in Earth System Science - divergent, complex, huge!
What? Supporting FAIR Principles ●Shared Meaning Across Systems = giving context and consistency using standardized vocabularies, ontologies, and metadata schemas ●Use of Controlled Vocabularies and Ontologies = relies on community-agreed terms and structures to describe data, enabling accurate interpretation, integration, and automated reasoning across disciplines ●Supports FAIR and Cross-Domain Research = enhances data reusability and integration across domains, supporting the FAIR principles and enabling interdisciplinary environmental research Semantic Interoperability
What? BITS Project Blueprint for the Integration of Terminology Services in ESS
How? Sustainable service via NFDI Service XY TS Earth Portal
