Abstract

ABSTRACT This article explores the reflection of humanism in Sir Thomas More’s Utopia and Alisher Navoi’s Mahbub ul-Qulub, emphasizing how both authors, despite belonging to different cultural and religious traditions, share a unified moral vision. The study analyzes how More’s Christian humanism and Navoi’s Islamic mysticism converge on similar ideals of justice, education, compassion, and moral reform. More’s Utopia presents a rational and equal society governed by moral law, while Navoi’s Mahbub ul-Qulub advocates ethical governance, the pursuit of knowledge, and the cultivation of human virtue. Through a comparative lens, the paper highlights that both thinkers use literature as a means to promote human dignity and moral improvement, demonstrating that the core values of humanism transcend historical and cultural boundaries. Keywords: Humanism, Sir Thomas More, Alisher Navoi, Utopia, Mahbub ul-Qulub, moral reform, justice, education, human dignity, comparative literature.

Sahifa: 121 INRTODUCTION Humanism, as a moral and intellectual movement, emerged in diverse cultural and historical contexts but consistently centered on the value, dignity, and moral potential of the human being. Sir Thomas More’s Utopia (1516) and Alisher Navoi’s Mahbub ul-Qulub (The Beloved of Hearts, 1500) represent two outstanding examples of this universal humanistic spirit. More, rooted in the Christian humanism of Renaissance Europe, envisions a rational and just society governed by moral law and collective welfare. Navoi, inspired by Islamic mysticism and the ethical teachings of Sufism, presents a vision of a compassionate and virtuous community based on justice, knowledge, and moral integrity. Despite their different cultural and religious backgrounds, both authors use literature as a means to advocate for moral reform, social justice, education, and respect for human dignity—demonstrating that the ideals of humanism transcend time, geography, and belief. SIR THOMAS MORE’S HUMANISM IN UTOPIA Sir Thomas More’s Utopia stands as one of the most influential works of Renaissance humanism, reflecting the author’s moral idealism and concern for social justice. Written in 1516, during a time of political corruption and widening inequality in England, Utopia presents an imaginary island where harmony, equality, and rational order prevail. More constructs a society free from greed, private property, and social oppression, where citizens live according to reason and shared responsibility. This vision contrasts sharply with the moral decay of contemporary Europe, emphasizing that ethical reform and rational governance can lead to a more just and humane world. A central aspect of More’s humanism is his belief in the moral and intellectual potential of human beings. In Utopia, education plays a vital role in shaping citizens who are guided by reason and virtue rather than selfish ambition. Every individual, regardless of social background, has access to learning, which fosters wisdom, discipline, and moral awareness. Through this ideal, More demonstrates his ZAMONAVIY TA'LIMDA FAN VA INNOVATSION TADQIQOTLAR http://zamtadqiqot.uz/index 3-son 12–to’plam 2025 y. Sahifa: 122 conviction that education is not merely a privilege but a foundation for moral progress and social harmony. This reflects the Renaissance humanist emphasis on cultivating the mind and soul through knowledge and moral instruction. Furthermore, Utopia embodies the Christian dimension of More’s humanism. Although the society he describes is fictional, its values are deeply rooted in Christian ethics—love for one’s neighbor, humility, justice, and the pursuit of the common good. More does not reject religion but integrates it into a rational moral order where faith supports ethical living. By combining reason with Christian virtue, Utopia expresses More’s belief that true human perfection arises from moral discipline and spiritual integrity. Thus, his work not only critiques the flaws of his age but also offers a timeless model of an ideal society grounded in justice, education, and moral law. ALISHER NAVOI’S HUMANISTIC PHILOSOPHY IN MAHBUB ULQULUB Alisher Navoi, one of the greatest thinkers and poets of the Timurid Renaissance, embodied the essence of Eastern humanism in his philosophical and literary works. In his prose masterpiece Mahbub ul-Qulub (The Beloved of Hearts), written in 1500, Navoi presents a collection of moral reflections and practical advice aimed at guiding rulers, scholars, and ordinary people toward ethical and spiritual perfection. Through his portrayal of justice, mercy, and wisdom, Navoi emphasizes that the moral quality of a society depends on the virtue of its leaders and the compassion among its people. His writing reveals a deep concern for human dignity, the importance of empathy, and the duty of those in power to serve humanity rather than dominate it. Central to Navoi’s humanistic philosophy is the belief that education and knowledge are the foundation of a just and prosperous society. He regarded learning as a sacred duty that refines the human soul and leads individuals toward moral enlightenment. In Mahbub ul-Qulub, Navoi praises scholars and teachers as the pillars of moral progress, arguing that ignorance breeds cruelty and injustice. His ZAMONAVIY TA'LIMDA FAN VA INNOVATSION TADQIQOTLAR http://zamtadqiqot.uz/index 3-son 12–to’plam 2025 y. Sahifa: 123 vision aligns with the broader Islamic intellectual tradition, in which reason and faith work together to cultivate inner virtue and societal harmony. For Navoi, true wisdom is inseparable from ethical action — the educated person must use knowledge for the benefit of others, not for personal gain. Navoi’s understanding of humanism is also deeply intertwined with Sufi mysticism, which views the perfection of humanity as a reflection of divine love and moral purity. He teaches that every individual, regardless of status or wealth, carries a spark of divine worth and must strive to awaken it through compassion, humility, and service. This spiritual humanism promotes equality, kindness, and justice as divine principles guiding human behavior. Thus, Mahbub ul-Qulub serves not only as a moral guidebook but also as a profound expression of Navoi’s belief in the transformative power of virtue and the unity of moral and spiritual development — ideals that continue to resonate across cultures and centuries. CONCLUSION Both Sir Thomas More and Alisher Navoi, though separated by geography, culture, and religion, share a common vision of humanity grounded in moral virtue, education, and justice. In Utopia, More constructs an ideal Christian society based on rational governance and equality, where moral law and learning guide human behavior toward harmony. In Mahbub ul-Qulub, Navoi similarly envisions a world where ethical governance, compassion, and wisdom serve as the foundation of social and spiritual life. While More’s thought reflects the rational and civic ideals of Renaissance Christian humanism, Navoi’s philosophy arises from the spiritual depth of Islamic mysticism; yet both lead to a remarkably similar human-centered worldview. Their works demonstrate that true progress is measured not by wealth or power, but by the cultivation of virtue, the spread of knowledge, and the dignity afforded to every human being. Together, they affirm that the ideals of humanism— justice, moral reform, and respect for human dignity—are universal values that transcend time, culture, and creed.
