The primary goal was to raise awareness about the vast opportunities within the circular and bio-economy sectors, emphasising the significant role young individuals can play in contributing to EU-funded projects related to the bioeconomy. The conference was structured in three distinct phases, creating a mosaic of events aimed at engaging youth as catalysts for transformative change in the bioeconomy: • Bioeconomy Changemakers Festival Satellite Event: “Bridging the gap between the thriving Bioeconomy and youth engagement”; • World Café on sustainable and circular Bioeconomy, organized in Gotland during the May 2024 Consortium Meeting; • EU Green Week 2024 Partner Event: “Wave of change for better water solutions”. Through its various phases, the conference aspired to highlight the P2GreeN initiative's dedication to fostering a sustainable and innovative bioeconomy, leveraging the passion and creativity of young individuals to drive this transformative journey, and contributing to the collective effort to update the EU Bioeconomy Strategy and Action Plan. The International Conference represented a pivotal opportunity not only to catalyze youth engagement and involvement in circular and bioeconomy initiatives but also to provide a platform for our project to share its vision with the European Commission. By fostering dialogue, sharing insights, and showcasing career prospects, we aimed to empower young individuals to become active participants in shaping the future of sustainable development in Europe while simultaneously influencing policy decisions at the highest levels. In this deliverable, we will first set the scene by presenting the European Bioeconomy Strategy. Following that, we will briefly overview the three events comprising the P2GreeN International Conference. Project Number: 101081883 Project Acronym: P2GreeN Deliverable 6.5 5 | P a g e 2 The EU Bioeconomy Strategy and its 2018 Action Plan – Bioeconomy: the European way to use our natural resources The European bioeconomy encompasses all sectors and systems that rely on biological resources—such as animals, plants, micro-organisms, and derived biomass, including organic waste—and their functions and principles. This interconnected system includes land and marine ecosystems, the primary production sectors (agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and aquaculture), and the economic and industrial sectors that utilize biological resources to produce food, feed, biobased products, energy, and services. The European Bioeconomy Strategy aims to foster a sustainable and circular bioeconomy that values and preserves ecosystems and biological resources, modernizes primary production systems through bio-based innovation, involves local stakeholders, protects the environment, and enhances biodiversity. Last revised in 2018, the Bioeconomy Action Plan is set for its next revision this year. In alignment with these goals, the P2GreeN project seeks to transition from a linear resource and nutrient system within the agri-food supply chain to a circular material flow system connecting urban and rural areas. By employing a holistic symbiotic resource management approach based on the 3R principle—Reduce, Reuse, Recover—P2GreeN aims to restore the coupling of the water-agri-food system. This involves developing new circular governance solutions, focusing on the recovery and utilization of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from human sanitary waste, converting it into safe bio-based fertilizers for agriculture. Given that our project aligns closely with the objectives of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy, and with the upcoming revision of the Bioeconomy Action Plan this year, we have worked to identify and highlight key points where we believe P2GreeN can contribute valuable insights. By focusing on sustainability, innovation, and ecosystem preservation, our project addresses critical areas such as circular nutrient flows and the utilization of bio-based fertilizers. We are eager to share our experiences and recommendations to help shape a more sustainable and effective bioeconomy strategy for Europe. The selection took place in August 2023, and 34 satellite events were selected. P2green Satellite Event is the first part of the P2green international conference and took place on 11th March 2024 from 9h30 to 11h00 am CET with the aim to discover the crucial link between a thriving bioeconomy and youth engagement. The event focuses on the transformative impact of projects like P2GreeN, showcasing their role in advancing bioeconomy. Engage with young entrepreneurs and participate in a roundtable discussion with industry experts. Background Bioeconomy Changemakers Festival 2024 The Bioeconomy Changemakers Festival 2024 is an event organised by the European Commission, in collaboration with the EU Bioeconomy Youth Ambassadors. The initiative aims to engage youth as drivers of the transformative change required given the multiple challenges the EU is facing today and to unlock the full potential of the bioeconomy. Bridging the gap between the thriving bioeconomy and youth engagement P2GreenN will actively participate in an online conference designed to inform and inspire young people, as well as anyone interested in bioeconomy, about the role of projects like P2GreenN in advancing the bioeconomy. The event will feature an overview by the project coordinator, partner interviews, presentations from young entrepreneurs, and a roundtable discussion with the Project Number: 101081883 Project Acronym: P2GreeN Deliverable 6.5 7 | P a g e project's partners. Participants are encouraged to register online and be part of this transformative experience, gaining insights into the bioeconomy and contributing to sustainable innovation. Agenda Highlights: 1. Overview by Project Coordinator: Get an in-depth look at the P2GreeN project, its goals, and its significant role in the bioeconomy industry with our project coordinator, Anita Beblek, from Agrathaer. Learn about our mission to develop, test, and adapt human sanitary waste to produce safe, bio-based fertilisers for agriculture. 2. Partners' Interviews and Presentations: Discover success stories from young entrepreneurs and explore opportunities in the bioeconomy field to witness the tangible impact of bioeconomy solutions. P2Green young and dynamic entrepreneurs and researchers: • Nicola Parfitt from Sanitation360 • Jennifer McConville from SLU -Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences • David de Chambrier from VunaNexus AG • Carsten Beneker from Agrathaer • Gerardo González from Bioazul • Jose Manuel from CETAQUA shed light on their experiences. 3. Roundtable Discussion: Your perspective matters, join a meaningful roundtable discussion with the project’s partners. The event will include direct engagement with the young audience and a final Q&A session, establishing a connection between experienced professionals and aspiring individuals. • 11th March 2024 • 9:30 - 11 h CET The event was organized using a codesign methodology with the European Commission. DG RTD planned four meetings to plan and explain how to fill out the co-creative Excel document where all the satellite events insert their information. In addition, P2Green was selected to present its achievements and comment on the Bioeconomy Youth Vision document drafted by the Bioeconomy Youth ambassadors. Nicola Parfitt from Sanitation 360 represented P2Green during the plenary conference in Brussels to discuss the Bioeconomy Youth vision. The project also prepared a promotional video to foster the advertising campaign for the event that was also shown during the plenary section. Moverim and CIP took care of an advertising campaign starting 2 weeks before the event sending out emails to stakeholders and drafting posts on social networks. The event counted 66 registered participants. 4 World Café on Sustainable and Circular Bioeconomy The World Café on Sustainable and Circular Bioeconomy, part of the second segment of our international conference, was held aboard a ferry from Stockholm to Gotland on May 20, 2024, to kick off our consortium meeting. This informal setting fostered dialogue and networking among 40 participants who were part of the P2GreeN consortium, creating a collaborative tone for the discussions. In preparation for this event, we conducted a survey to gather initial insights and Project Number: 101081883 Project Acronym: P2GreeN Deliverable 6.5 8 | P a g e opinions from participants on the three pillars of the Bioeconomy Action Plan. We collected responses from 33 partners, and based on these, we structured the World Café activity. Figure 2 “World Café on sustainable and circular bioeconomy” event poster The World Café featured three discussion tables, each focused on a different priority of the Bioeconomy Action Plan: Group 1: Strengthen and Scale Up the Bio-Based Sectors by Supporting Innovation and Unlocking Investments and Markets (Priority 1) o Rapporteur: Angelos Parmatzias (C.I.P.) o WP6 Facilitator: Laura Vivani (Moverim) Group 2: Deploy Local Bioeconomies Rapidly Across the Whole of Europe (Priority 2) o Rapporteur: Thanos Balafoutis (CERTH) o WP6 Facilitator: Veronica Christofidis (Moverim) Group 3: Understand the Ecological Boundaries of the Bioeconomy (Priority 3) o Rapporteur: Carsten Beneker (Agrathaer) o WP6 Facilitator: Aleksandra Pajic (Moverim) During the ferry trip, participants engaged in a two-hour session, rotating every half hour to bring fresh perspectives and ideas to each table. The rapporteurs, with their expertise, guided the discussions and helped identify missing elements and key concepts. These discussions were based on the survey responses but aimed to delve deeper into each topic.
