His tenure as Chief Minister is remembered as a time of transformative change for Tamil Nadu. His government prioritized education, industrial development, and agricultural growth, setting the stage for the state’s future prosperity. One of Kamaraj’s most revolutionary contributions was the introduction of the free midday meal scheme in 1956. This program, initially launched in select districts, aimed to provide free meals to poor school children, thus increasing enrollment and reducing dropout rates in primary schools. The scheme, later expanded throughout the state, became a model for other states in India. It not only addressed hunger but also contributed to improving literacy rates among Tamil Nadu’s rural population. He also focused on the expansion of educational institutions. Under his leadership, Tamil Nadu saw the establishment of numerous schools, colleges, and vocational institutions. Kamaraj’s government worked tirelessly to improve the state’s educational infrastructure, which contributed to the overall literacy rate of Tamil Nadu, one of the highest in India. The development of the Mettur Dam and the Kaveri Delta were among his major achievements in this regard. His focus on ensuring that agricultural produce could be transported efficiently to urban markets greatly improved the livelihood of farmers. One of the key traits that defined Kamaraj was his simplicity. He was known for living a modest lifestyle despite his high political stature. His personal integrity and honesty became the cornerstone of his leadership style, and he was often referred to as the “Kingmaker” because of his ability to make tough decisions without yielding to corruption. His vision for a prosperous Tamil Nadu, where education, agriculture, and industrialization thrived, laid the groundwork for the state’s rise in the latter half of the 20th century. Today, Kamaraj is remembered not only as a political leader but also as a visionary who worked tirelessly to elevate Tamil Nadu to its current status as one of the most dynamic and prosperous states in India. On the industrial front, Kamaraj worked to establish the groundwork for industrial growth by fostering cooperation between the government and private industry. Under his leadership, Tamil Nadu saw the establishment of industries such as Hindustan Motors,Madras Refineries, and various textile factories that helped create jobs and fuel the state’s economic growth. What unites Kalam and Kamaraj is not just their Tamil origin but their enduring commitment to service and nation-building.
