EOSC Beyond Ontology and Resource Profiles

EOSC Beyond Top-Level Ontology Glossary EOSC Resource A digital entity with a persistent identity, a name (or title), a description, a publishing date, and associated to an EOSC Node. It acts as the foundational concept for services, data, publications, software, and other research resources. Service A Service is a digital resource or capability that supports research activities, accessible via EOSC Nodes, and accessible through APIs and/or web interfaces. Examples of services include computing, storage, analytics, access to resources, data management services, scientific workflow engines, VREs, etc.. DataSource (isA Service) A Data Source is a special kind of EOSC Service that offers storage, preservation, discovery, and access to Research Products metadata and files (if available). Examples are thematic repositories (e.g. PANGAEA data archive), institutional repositories (e.g. HAL French repository), catch-all repositories (e.g. Zenodo.org), software repositories (e.g. GitHub), data source registries (e.g. re3data.org, FAIRSharing.og), adapters catalogues (e.g. EOSC Beyond Adapter Catalogue), Training material (e.g. OpenPlato.eu), etc. Catalogue (isA DataSource) A catalogue is a Data Source that is responsible for an EOSC Node to collect (via aggregation activities or manual ingestion) and provide access to metadata records about EOSC Resources that fall under the jurisdiction of the EOSC Node. EOSC Node catalogues typically (but not always) do not offer access to content, but provide metadata with links to the Data Sources that offer access to content. Examples include the CESSDA Data Catalogue and the NIFOS catalogue, among others. Deployable Service A deployable service is a self-contained application or component defined in a TOSCA template that can be automatically provisioned, configured, and managed on cloud environments (e.g. Containers). Research Product An identifiable and shareable output of a research activity, made available via a Data Source. This includes datasets, publications, software, workflows, and any FAIR Digital Objects.. Training Resource Digital educational materials supporting capacity building and research skills development. These include tutorials, webinars, online courses, and documentation. Interoperability Guideline Documents that outline how to effectively use protocols, APIs, and standards to interact with a class of EOSC services. These guidelines provide detailed explanations on integrating and harmonizing metadata standards, data formats, and access procedures, ensuring seamless data exchange and collaboration across diverse research infrastructures. Adapter A software component specifically addressing the task of facilitating developers in implementing software to let their services interoperate with other EOSC Services, for example, to join the Federating Capabilities of a Node (e.g. EOSC EU Node Core Service Providers to facilitate the integration with Core Federating Capabilities). Examples are software libraries that map across different communication protocols, such as data formats onto other formats, API methods onto other API methods, etc.. Adapters are typically, but not necessarily, provided by the Service providers to facilitate interoperability with them. Organization (previously referred to as “Provider”) Any organisation responsible/liable for operating and making available an EOSC resource in the EOSC Federation. Typically, these are RPOs, research infrastructures, einfrastructures, etc.. EOSC Node A federated digital infrastructure unit in the EOSC Federation that delivers or brokers services, data, and research products to users. Nodes may be national, regional, or thematic.
