Abstract

This paper delves into the current methodologies employed in teaching Chinese (Mandarin) and the extent to which they are able to engender the development of language skills. The primary methods examined are Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Task-Based Learning, Audio-Lingual Method, Total Physical Response (TPR), Blended Learning, Flipped Classroom, Gamification, and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). The analysis of each method includes its concepts, procedures, benefits, and adaptability to different levels of learners. The research reveals that the mixture of old and new methods as well as the use of technology-based tools greatly enhances students’ linguistic competence, cultural understanding, and motivation. This article is full of practical strategies that educators can use to effectively teach Chinese in face-to-face as well as virtual‍ ‍‌classes.

As more and more learners engage with the language, the question of how to teach the language most effectively is becoming more and more vital. Generally, traditional methods which are usually very roteoriented and heavily focus on grammar and vocabulary memorization, are still the main reasons why communicative competence, cultural understanding, and motivation of learners are not developed well. To overcome these challenges, teachers have turned INTERNATIONALSCIENCES, EDUCATION AND NEW LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES VOLUME 2 | ISSUE 9 | 2025 https://internationalsciences.org/ | Social Sciences and Humanities | November, 2025 156 to a wide range of contemporary pedagogical approaches which focus mainly on student interaction, authentic language practice, and, in most cases, the use of technology. Changes like the adoption of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), TaskBased Learning, Audio-Lingual Method, Total Physical Response (TPR), Blended Learning, Flipped Classroom, Gamification, and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) are some of the innovative strategies that can be used to solve the problem of traditional instruction. Moreover, every single approach has some distinctive benefits and can be modified for different proficiency levels as well as for various educational contexts. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT): Communicative Language Teaching emphasizes the acquisition of Chinese language through genuine interaction instead of the traditional way of learning grammar and vocabulary by heart. Learners deal with meaningful use of language in order to achieve fluency in communication. For instance, in a restaurant simulation, students learn and practice how to order food as well as react in a natural manner. Example: Customer: “请问,这道菜辣吗?” (Qǐngwèn, zhè dào cài là ma?) – “Excuse me, is this dish spicy?”. Waiter: “不辣,很 好吃。” (Bù là, hěn hǎochī.) – “No, it’s very delicious.” Task-Based Learning: TaskBased Learning is a Chinese language program which emphasizes real-life tasks to be done by the students thus making language acquiring goal-oriented and naturally contextualized. As an example, students might organize a trip to Beijing and show the tour plan in Chinese. Example: “我们明天去北京旅游,你负责订酒店,我负责订 机票。” (Wǒmen míngtiān qù Běijīng lǚyóu, nǐ fùzé dìng jiǔdiàn, wǒ fùzé dìng jīpiào.) – “We will travel to Beijing tomorrow; you book the hotel, and I’ll book the plane tickets.” Audio-Lingual Method: The Audio-Lingual Method mainly focuses on the use of repetition and drills as a means of teaching grammar and pronunciation. Students go over dialogues by themselves in order to grasp the correct structures of language. Example: A: “你好!” (Nǐ hǎo!) – “Hello!”. B: “你好,你今天好吗?” (Nǐ hǎo, nǐ jīntiān hǎo ma?) – “Hello, how are you today?” Total Physical Response (TPR): TPR incorporates physical movements as a means of reinforcing language learning. The students hear the commands and they carry out the actions and this helps their memory and comprehension. Example: Teacher: “请站起来。” (Qǐng zhàn qǐlái.) – “Please stand up.” Students: (Stand up). Blended Learning: Blended Learning is a combination of the traditional classroom method and online resources. The students can read the theory in class and do the exercises or use the app at home. Example: 老 师: “请在应用程序里完成今天的练习。” (Qǐng zài yìngyòng chéngxù lǐ wánchéng jīntiān de liànxí.) – “Please complete today’s exercises in the app.” Flipped INTERNATIONALSCIENCES, EDUCATION AND NEW LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES VOLUME 2 | ISSUE 9 | 2025 https://internationalsciences.org/ | Social Sciences and Humanities | November, 2025 157 Classroom: In the Flipped Classroom, students learn the theoretical part at home like watching videos and practically at school through exercises, dialogues, or role-plays. Example: 学生: “我已经看过视频了,现在可以练习对话。” (Wǒ yǐjīng kàn guò shìpín le, xiànzài kěyǐ liànxí duìhuà.) – “I have already watched the video, now we can practice the dialogue.” Gamification: Gamification is a method to make learning enjoyable and encouraging by applying game elements such as points, levels, or rewards. Students become more active participants through competitive or interactive tasks. Example: 老师: “谁答对五个问题就可以获得奖励。” (Shéi dá duì wǔ gè wèntí jiù kěyǐ huòdé jiǎnglì.) – “Whoever answers five questions correctly will receive a reward.” Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL): CLIL uses Chinese as a medium of instruction in other subjects like history, culture, or science. Such an approach allows learners to pick up the language naturally as they are engaged in learning the content. Example: 老师: “请用中文介绍长城的历史。” (Qǐng yòng Zhōngwén jièshào Chángchéng de lìshǐ.) – “Please present the history of the Great Wall in Chinese.” In conclusion, the use of modern pedagogical strategies in teaching Chinese have been very effective in attracting the attention of students, encouraging them to use the language in real-life situations, and getting them familiarized with the culture as compared to the traditional methods which mainly focus on grammar and vocabulary. The use of interactive and technology-based methods has been instrumental in not only language development but also in the motivation of learners. Educators have the potential to maximize students' learning by implementing these modern methods in accordance with the learners' proficiency levels and the educational contexts. Hence, both face-to-face and online learning can be made more efficient, attractive, and conducive to students' overall language development. Another point of departure for studies could be examining the effects of such strategies over time. REFERENCES 1. Brown, H. D. (2007). Principles of language learning and teaching (5th ed.).
