Language Differences: Different languages are spoken in different countries. And similar words could have different meanings in different languages. This could result in misunderstandings. Example: HSBC launched a tagline “Assume Nothing” to encourage people to explore more about financial products and services. But it was mistranslated in some countries with “Do Nothing”. This effected the reputation of HSBC so they had to launch a campaign to rebrand its name with expenses of $10 million. 2. Different Norms and Work Ethics: Different attitudes towards work life balance, deadlines and punctuality can create problems at global companies. Example: German people generally follow punctuality and strict work schedules, on the other hand Indian people prefer flexibility with timelines. Accordingly, if
72 Stochastic Analytical Frameworks for Indian Knowledge Systems and Innovation: Future Pathways there is partnership in Indian and German based company there could be conflicts due to difference in attitude. 3. Different Decision Making Styles: Decision making approaches could be different due to difference in culture. For example Japanese businesses mostly follow collective approach in decision making while U.S based companies follow individualism approach. In case of collaboration between these companies problems can arise. 4. Different Communication Styles: Communication styles could be of two types: High context and Low context. Countries like China, Japan follow high context style which means non verbal communication or body language is given more weightage as compared to spoken words but on the other hand U.S and Germany are low context countries. It means direct words which are spoken will be given all weightage. Example: At starting when walmart entered in Japanese market its direct advertising approach was failed to capture attention of customers because they value slight messaging. 5. Ethical and Religious Differences: Due to differences in religious practices, believes and ethical norms can create challenges. Like in countries with Hinduism there will be no market for beef. Example: Coca Cola faced boycott from Muslim based countries as these are targeting brands which are symbolizing America. 6. Legal and Regulatory Differences: Cultural variations may also extend to regulatory and legal frameworks, which may cause compliance issues. Example: Uber faced challenges when they started business in China because of local regulations and cultural variations at local level. To overcome that challenge Uber had to do partnership with Didi Chuxing. 5. Management Practices followed by various Companies to overcome the Cross Cultural Challenges in Business: Real World Examples 1. Trainings and Cultural Awareness: Proper workshops and trainings must be conducted to make employees aware about the norms, etiquettes and cultural differences. Local consultants must be conducted to find the ways to overcome

Example: Whenever entering into new market McDonald’s provide cultural sensitivity training to its employees. In India population avoids beef due to religious believes. McDonald’s introduced vegetarian menu and chicken based items while training its staff. 2. Effective Communication: Jargons, Idiomatic expressions, Slangs must be avoided to reduce confusions. Proper verbal, visual and written methods of communication must be followed. Employees must be given freedom to ask queries so that no confusion must be there. Example: Unilever is working over 190 countries and use multiple languages for communication as per the country. They provide proper training of communication/ Language to employees as per company. 3. Flexible Leadership Styles: Balanced leadership styles must be followed. It must be inclusive in nature. Leadership style must be adjusted as per the culture of country Like in country where high power distance culture is followed there authoritative leadership style can be applied and in case of Low power distance cultures participative leadership style must be followed. Example: Google change its leadership styles as per country. In U.S it follows flat hierarchy and in Japan it follows strict hierarchy. 4. Build Cross Cultural Teams: Team must be build with members from different cultural backgrounds. At time of decision making prospective of all members must be valued. It will be helpful in giving best ideas. If there will be any conflict then it must be addressed with cultural sensitive way. Example: P&G creates global teams to build new product. When Pantene shampoo for Asia was made, it created a team with Asian members because they understood Local hair and care needs and cultural beauty standards. 5. Localization and Standardization: All strategies and planning must be done by prioritizing local values, ethics and standards. It will reduce the conflict and chances of success will be higher. Example: Coca cola always change its campaign as per the local requirements of any culture but always keeps its standard of brand message that is happiness and refreshment. So when it starts its campaign in India it focuses more on relationship promotion as Indian culture focuses more on sense of belongingness.

Flexibility must be given as per religious requirements. Example: SAP, Software Company, always follows flexible approach. Like in time of Ramadan, it allows Muslim workers to adjust working hours for managing their prayers and fasting schedules properly. 7. Technology and New Tools: Technology must be used properly to remove cultural barriers. Like video conferencing could be used for team meetings of multicultural members. Example: Microsoft uses multilingual chat features during meetings of Global employees to remove barriers of languages. 8. Feedback and Evaluation: Proper feedback must be taken from all concerned parties to know about the challenges of cultural differences and to create policies accordingly. Also check the success of cross cultural projects and make adjustments accordingly. 6. Findings Verbal and non-verbal communication can result in misunderstandings in cross culture business environment. Because some cultures prioritize body language and others prioritize spoken words only. Leadership styles will also have affect on success of cross cultural business projects. Inclusive leadership style is very effective. I most of the cases Global Managers may face resistance to change from employees and customers of different cultures while entering into new market with different cultures. Local Laws and regulations, Government in Power, International policies of business etc can also have both positive and negative impact on Global business. Decision making practices/ approaches can also create conflicts. Because attitudes, values and believes towards of different cultures are different. New Technology and tools, consultancy services etc. could be helpful in overcoming challenges of cross cultural environment.
