India adopted this policy on 29 July 2020. NEP-2020 aims to revolutionize the education system. Given India's large youth-rich demographic dividend, with an average age of less than 30 years, the nation will benefit from easy availability and excellent educational opportunities. Through this, an attempt has been made to restructure the education system to suit the needs of the 21 st century. This education policy aims to make quality education accessible to all. Under the Global Education Development Agenda, reflected in the United Nations' SDG-4, "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality of education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all" by 2030 is a priority. The purpose of education in ancient India was not only to acquire knowledge to prepare oneself for this world or life after school, but also to overcome the weakness of ignorance by self-realization of the intellectual wealth of traditional knowledge. World-class institutions in ancient India, such as Nalanda, Takshashila, and Vallabhi, set the highest standards of multidisciplinary teaching and research. Keeping in mind the above-mentioned broad public support, emphasis has been placed on making the mother tongue the medium of instruction. Thus, this policy will prove to be a milestone for the Indian education system. Keywords: NEP-2020, Education Policy, SDG-4 Opportunities and Challenges. Introduction The national education system of any country is a crucial pillar of its development. India's education system is one of the oldest and has undergone periodic changes. Efforts have been made to strengthen the Indian education system since independence. Previous attempts were made to reform the education system through the National Education Policy in 1968 and 1986, but these did not live up to the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda. Therefore, due to current global challenges and the advent of new technologies, the need for comprehensive changes in the Indian education system was once again felt. Consequently, the National Education Policy was formulated with an eye to skill development, inclusion, and improving the quality of education. India's cultural and social diversity was taken into account in its drafting. This policy has been formulated keeping in mind the needs of the 21 st century. This education policy will be an important step towards making India a world leader again. Significance of the Study National Education Policy2020 is the need of the modren education of India. This policy is very important to bring about comprehensive changes in the education system of the nation. It not only focuses on the lower level of education but also prepares the students through education according to the requirements of the 21 st century. The main objective of this policy is to make the education system prevalent in India holistic and practical. So that the all-round development of the students can be possible. Through this, an attempt has also been made to make education holistic and practical. Under this policy, teaching has been structured in such a way that creativity, critical reasoning and problem-solving ability can be developed in children. Under this policy, emphasis has been laid on skill-based education. Through which the youth of the country can become self-reliant. Through this, an attempt has been made to reduce the gap between rural and urban areas through digital education. An attempt has been made to promote research and innovation under higher education and to encourage research under higher education. This education policy provides a solid foundation for development by preparing India for the future.

This education policy, which came after about 34 years, has tried to bring about corrective changes in every level of education. It has been implemented for improvement and innovation in the education system. Through this education policy, many possibilities have emerged in the education system. This is an attempt to remove the shortcomings of the Indian education system. Some major possibilities are as follows1. Holistic and Multidisciplinary EducationThe primary objective of this education policy is to promote holistic and multidisciplinary education for children. This will create an integrated curriculum for arts, science, and vocational education, aiming to eliminate rigidity in the education system. Efforts will be made to develop a creative and innovative approach in students, enabling them to not only acquire knowledge but also use it to solve problems. This policy emphasizes encouraging critical thinking and reasoning in students. Under this new education policy, students will now have the freedom to choose subjects according to their interests, which will be beneficial for enhancing their personal and professional development. 2. Early Childhood, Care and Education (ECCE)- This policy provides for Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) to strengthen the foundation of education. This aims to ensure that children up to grade three are proficient in numeracy and reading by 2025. Through ECCE, Anganwadis and primary schools will be integrated, further strengthening primary education. 3. Equal and Inclusive EducationIn this education policy, like other education policies, provision has been made to pay special attention to the education of children from the deprived sections of the society. In which, it has been considered to make corrective efforts in education for Scheduled Castes, Tribes, Divyang, Backwards Classes, Minority Communities etc. Many suggestions have also been given to reduce gender inequality. A suggestion has been presented to deploy teachers from time to time for the deprived communities and provision has also been made to mobilize the necessary resources in the schools. 4. Skill Development and Vocational EducationThe new education policy has made a provision to provide skill-oriented education to children. In which all students from grade six will be provided training in vocational education. After completing the training, students will be given an opportunity for an internship in industries and businesses. Through this, students will not only become job seekers but will also be encouraged to start self-employment. Apart from this, children from class 6 will also be taught coding under digital education. 5. Integration of TechnologyDigital education is also included in the New Education Policy 2020. Under this, efforts will be made to make teachers' teaching more effective by utilizing digital learning and eresources in the teaching methodology. To ensure that digital learning is not limited to cities, the availability of digital devices will be ensured in rural areas as well. Additionally, teachers will also be provided training in the use of these digital devices. 6. Reforms in Higher EducationAccording to NEP 2020, students will have the freedom to choose subjects of interest in higher education institutions. 7. Research work will be promoted within higher education. Efforts will also be made to improve the quality of higher education institutions. 8. Teacher Training and EmpowermentIn this policy, teacher education has also been given prominent attention. In this policy, it has been suggested that the training program of teachers should be strengthened. Understanding the needs of the current educational scenario, teachers will be trained. Adequate resources will be allocated for this purpose. 9. Language-Centric EducationUnder this education policy, mother tongue education has been given prominence in the teaching of primary classes. Under the teaching, there is a provision to teach children about various cultures, traditions and moral values of India. New education policy is a step towards improvement and development of the national education system, through which the overall global development of students will be possible. They will be able to become self-reliant and prepare for any competition in the world. Challenges in Implementation of NEP 2020: Although the National Education Policy2020 aims to bring about a comprehensive change in the Indian education system, it may still face extreme difficulties and challenges in doing so. Its major challenges can be understood under the following headings-
Educational Vision (ISSN: 2454-8863) || January-June 2025, Volume 11, Issue 01 || © CTE, Uttarakhand Chapter All rights reserved. www.cteuttrakhand.com [ 4 ] *Research Scholar, Department of Education, Ras Bihari Bose Subharti University Dehradun, Uttarakhand **Associate Professor, Department of Education, Ras Bihari Bose Subharti University Dehradun, Uttarakhand Opportunities and Challenges for Execution of NEP2020 Mrs. Preeti Rani & Dr. Ram Niwas Deshwal • Teacher’s Training - There are many rural areas in India where there is still a shortage of teachers. There is more shortage of the teachers in remote areas. There is also a considerable difference in the ratio of teachers and students. There is a shortage of teachers of English, Mathematics and Science. There is also a shortage of expert teachers of new subjects like coding etc. It is often seen that there is only one teacher in remote areas. Who teaches all the subjects. This affects the teaching quality of the teacher. Under this policy, a provision of 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 teaching system has been made, according to which teaching is challenging for teachers. Another challenge is that not all teachers have the knowledge of using digital devices. They are sometimes not able to solve technical problems in online studies. • Unavailability of InfrastructureThe aim of this education policy is to emphasize on quality education to every child in India and this will be possible only when resources are available in schools in sufficient quantity. Even today, there are many schools which do not have basic facilities like toilets, drinking water, classrooms, seating arrangements etc. Basic facilities have been talked about under this policy but these basic facilities are still lacking in remote rural areas. • Financial ChallengesNEP 2020 states that its target is to increase expenditure 6% of GDP on education, but currently the spend about three percent is spent only. Due to lack of adequate financial arrangements for education, there is a lack of teacher training, teaching equipment etc. Due to lack of financial coordination between the state governments and the central government, it seems impossible to implement this policy. • Digital InaccessibilityUnder this education policy, emphasis has been laid on digital education in schools, but it cannot be implemented in all schools because there are lack of digital equipment in the remote schools of rural areas of India. There is also a difference in technical literacy between the people of urban and rural areas. Which is a big challenge in the implementation of this policy. • Challenge of Mother tongue EducationIn NEP 2020, it has been recommended that all students up to class five should be provided education in their mother tongue or the regional languages of that area, but this recommendation cannot be applied to children of all regions because many languages are spoken in India. It takes a lot of time and labour to prepare quality study material in the language of every region. • Change in Curriculum and AssessmentIt has been clearly stated in this education policy that children should be removed from the rote learning system and emphasis should be laid on learning by doing. This will require a new curriculum to replace the old one. Developing this curriculum will be extremely challenging. Such a curriculum will require both teachers and students to make mental shifts in their teaching and learning. Teachers will also need to change their mindset to support an education system based on technological assessment. New resources and trainers will also be needed for skill development and vocational education starting from 6 th grade. • Challenges of reform in Higher EducationIt seeks to make higher education more flexible and integrate a multidisciplinary education system. Currently, there are insufficient resources to foster quality research and innovation. Preparing Indian higher education for international competition and inviting foreign universities will be face a major challenge. • Social and Economic EqualityThe objective of this education policy is to make education accessible to all. Which is a big challenge because there is a lot of difference between education in rural and urban areas in India. Bringing improvement in the education of deprived sections of the society and girl education will also be a challenge. • Administrative and Political ChallengesEducation comes under the concurrent list. Therefore, for the smooth implementation of the education policy, it is necessary to have a consensus between the state and central government. But at present, it is seen that there is no coordination between some state governments and the central government. Due to some administrative action, its implementation is also a challenge. • Need for change in MindsetThis policy can be considered successful only when parents and teachers together cooperate in eliminating the rote learning system from the society and make children ready to learn in a creative and experimental way. The National Education Policy2020 in India is very challenging to implement. Its solution is possible by making effective plans for these challenges, financial assistance, technological development and participation of every sector of the society. The correct implementation of this education policy will take India to new heights.

So that the financial challenges in its operation can be faced. 2) Efforts should be made to reduce the inequality under education in rural and urban areas. Digital tools for education should be made available equally in both areas. 3) Digital infrastructure should be developed in rural areas for the digitalization of education. 4) Digital training should be provided to teachers in rural areas. So that they do not shy away from the digitalization of education and use technology in their teaching. 5) Continuous professional development programs should be implemented from time to time for teachers. So that their training, teaching and quality of teaching can be improved. 6) Technically equipped workshops should be organised for teachers. 7) Regional language curriculum material should be created to impart education in the mother tongue. The content of bilingual training for teachers, local language training etc., should be made available digitally. 8) Vocational education should be linked to employment, and partnerships should be made with industries. Workshops should be organised in vocational education to encourage skill-based education. 9) Internet and digital tools should be available in both rural and urban areas for the technology of education. Digital learning centres should be established in every school. 10) Teachers, parents and society should be made aware of this education policy. Awareness campaigns should be run for this work. 11) To promote research, grant money and scholarships should be provided to students from time to time. Credit-based courses should be successfully implemented in higher educational institutions, and the Academic Bank of Credit should be strengthened. All these measures will make it easy to successfully implement the New Education Policy2020, and this policy will act as a guide for future education. CONCLUSION Currently, India has taken a strong step towards transforming its education system with the NEP 2020. It provides the students with many opportunities for success and attempts to address and overcome the problems and challenges of the previous Education Policy of 1986. The policy focuses on holistic education, critical thinking, research and innovation, and practical learning. It provides knowledge about solutions to complex problems arising in the 21 st century. The use of technology aims to expand access to quality education. NEP 2020 provides appropriate opportunities for skilled individuals through vocational education. SDG 4 also commits to ensuring that everyone has access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities. Successful implementation of NEP 2020 will require addressing challenges such as infrastructure development, teacher training, and funding. REFERENCES 1. Aithal, S.
