Dinija Assistant Professor of History Sarah Tucker College, Tirunelveli Abstract Marshal Nesamony (1895–1968) was a prominent Indian freedom fighter, lawyer, politician, and social reformer from Kanyakumari district. Often hailed as the “Father of Kanyakumari District”, he played a key role in the merger of Tamil-speaking Kanyakumari with Tamil Nadu during the post-independence reorganization of states. His leadership of the Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress (TTNC) was instrumental in mobilizing public support and achieving this historic goal. Beyond politics, Nesamony dedicated his life to uplifting marginalized communities, especially the Scheduled Castes and backward classes, advocating for social equality, temple entry rights, universal education, and women’s empowerment. He believed that political freedom must go hand in hand with social justice, and worked tirelessly to eliminate caste-based discrimination in southern Tamil Nadu. His contributions to educational development, human rights, and rural upliftment left a lasting impact on the region. As a member of Parliament and public servant, his voice represented the oppressed and underserved. Nesamony’s legacy remains a symbol of nonviolent struggle, regional identity, and inclusive leadership, continuing to inspire social and political movements in contemporary tamil society. Introduction In the history of modern Tamil Nadu and India’s freedom struggle, many prominent leaders have contributed both politically and socially. Among them, Marshal Nesamony stands out as a rare leader who perfectly combined nationalistic ferver with a deep commitment to social justice. Often referred to as the Father of Kanyakumari District, Nesamony was not just a freedom fighter but also a lawyer, politician, and reformer who dedicated his life to the upliftment of the oppressed. His fight for the merger of Kanyakumari district with Tamil Nadu, his advocacy for education, and his contributions to the scheduled castes and backward communities mark him as a leader whose legacy deserves greater recognition. Early Life and Education Marshal Nesamony was born on January 1, 1895, in a humble Nadar family in Kanyakumari, then part of the princely state of Travancore. Growing up in a society deeply divided by caste, religion, and colonial power, Nesamony experienced direct the discrimination faced by socially backward communities. This environment of inequality and social injustice would shape his character. He completed his early education in Kanyakumari and later attended the esteemed Scott Christian College in Nagercoil, known for nurturing political and intellectual talent in South India. He provide legal services to the poor and underprivileged people. His profession brought him close to the issues of the common people like land rights, caste discrimination, and administrative injustice. Nesamony’s legal background gave him both the tools and confidence to enter common life. Hence he gradually became a strong voice for the Nadar community and other oppressed groups in Travancore. His calm dattitude and effective speeches made him a respected figure even among his political opponents. Political Career and Role in Indian Freedom Movement Though Travancore was a princely state and not directly ruled by the British, the nationalist movement had a strong presence. Nesamony aligned himself with the Indian National Congress (INC) and took part in non-violent agitations, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of Satyagraha and Ahimsa. He actively participated in various freedom movements, including: · The Civil Disobedience Movement · Campaigns for responsible government in princely states · Movements for temple entry and equality of castes Nesamony was arrested several times during his involvement in these agitations, which only increased his popularity among the people. He became a symbol of justice and courage for the people of South Travancore. The Struggle for Kanyakumari Merger with Tamil Nadu One of Marshal Nesamony’s most important contributions was leading the movement for the merger of Kanyakumari district (then part of Travancore-Cochin State) with the newly formed Tamil Nadu after India’s independence in 1947. Kanyakumari, with a Tamil-speaking majority, was ruled by a Malayalam-speaking administration. This led to linguistic and cultural tensions. Nesamony believed that the Tamil identity and cultural heritage of the region could only be preserved by merging it with Tamil Nadu. He formed and led the Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress (TTNC) in 1947, which became the political vehicle for the merger movement. Under his leadership, the Travancore Tamilnadu Congress fought elections and won several seats in the Travancore-Cochin assembly ,Protested against linguistic oppression, demonstrating through peaceful marches and submitting a formal request to the Indian government. Even when faced with political suppression, arrests, and police shootings. Nesamony never wavered in his resolve. His nonviolent leadership inspired thousands. Finally, in 1956, the States Reorganization Act was passed, and Kanyakumari district was officially merged with Tamil Nadu. This was a historic victory and a testament to Nesamony’s determination. Social Reformer and Advocate for Equality Beyond his political success, Marshal Nesamony was a committed social reformer. He believed that freedom was meaningless without social equality. His primary focus areas included Upliftment of Marginalized Communities, Promotion of Education, Support for Women’s Rights Nesamony consistently fought for the rights of Scheduled Castes, Nadars, and other backward classes. He also supported temple entry movements for lower caste people, abolition of untouchability, equal access to public spaces and government jobs promotes a more inclusive society by ensuring fairness, social justice and improved quality of life for all citizens. He believed that education was the key to social progress. He, founded schools and colleges in rural and backward areas, to advocated for free and compulsory education and to encouraged female education and adult literacy. Nesamony supported women’s empowerment at a time when it was not widely accepted. To achieve true equality it is necessary to ensure women’s equal participation in politics and decicion making along side guaranted rights in property, marriage, education and employment, which are crucial for their empowerment and societal progress.

In Parliament, he advocated for South Tamil Nadu’s development. Raised issues related to education, transport, and agriculture. Emphasized the need for caste equality and fair administration. Though he served only one term in the Lok Sabha, his impact was lasting. He continued to remain a respected public figure even after retiring from electoral politics. Legacy and Contributions Marshal Nesamony passed away in 1968, but his legacy lives on in Kanyakumari and beyond. He is remembered as the Father of Kanyakumari District. He become known as a champion of Tamil identity through his dedication. His name is honored through Marshal Nesamony Memorial College in Marthandam. Statues and public buildings named after him recognition in Tamil Nadu political and educational circles. Conclusion Marshal Nesamony was more than a politician. He was a freedom fighter, social reformer, and visionary. His efforts transformed the lives of thousands, particularly in Kanyakumari district. By fighting not just colonial rule, but also the social evils of casteism, illiteracy, and discrimination. His work reminds us that true leadership lies in serving the people, especially the marginalized and oppressed. In today’s world, where issues of social justice, identity, and equality remain relevant, the life and work of Marshal Nesamony offer valuable lessons in courage, compassion, and commitment.
