Matthias Jarke studied computer science and business administration in a double degree program at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and received a PhD in operations research also from the University of Hamburg. He became Assistant and Associate Professor at Stern School of Business, New York University, USA before moving to the University of Passau, Germany, as Full Professor. In 1991, he accepted the offer by RWTH Aachen, Germany, for Full Professor of Information Systems where he stayed until his retirement. He held various additional positions whilst at Aachen including executive director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology. He supervised numerous PhD students and mentored several habilitation projects. It was during his time at New York that he published some of the earliest papers on negotiation support systems and decision support systems which were groundbreaking and have paved the way for many later research projects. Matthias was a long-standing member of the editorial board of the GDN Journal and reviewed and coordinated a very large number of submissions, sharing his wide knowledge and his creative ideas with the authors and with colleagues. In 2017, he gave a memorable keynote at the 17th International Conference on Group Decision and Negotiation, GDN 2017, in Stuttgart, Germany. Matthias was an esteemed colleague and dear friend to many of us in the GDN community. We will always remember him as an outstanding researcher, a generous mentor, and a colleague with a sharp intellect. Our thoughts are with his wife and children.
