Enabling Technical Interoperability in the ETH Domain
Abstract
Presentation held at the Swiss Research Data Support Network (SRDSN) Fall Meeting 2025. DataCite Metadata Schema and S3 Object Storage have been selected as the basis for enabling ORD interoperability in the ETH Domain. Enabling technical interoperability between existing services and infrastructures is a declared goal of the Measure 2 of the ORD program of the ETH Domain.

27.11.2025 | SRDSN Fall Meeting How about Metadata for all possible Use Cases?
27.11.2025 | SRDSN Fall Meeting Technical Interoperability –Measure 2 Recommendations S3 data links: All ETH metadata recommendations should support S3 data links. Describing research data in the DataCite metadata schema: Following the recommendations of ETH data repositories is strongly recommended when minting a DOI for S3 data, as this ensures metadata integrity and validation. RO-Crate: RO-Crate should be used when additional metadata is required, such as domain-specific information, or when sharing non-S3 data that doesn’t have a DOI. RO-Crate should include the ETH Datacite metadata fields. JSON-LD: Zenodo-style JSON-LD should be used when implementation simplicity is prioritized when sharing S3 data, and additional metadata complexity is not required. JSON-LD should include the ETH Datacite metadata fields. S3

27.11.2025 | SRDSN Fall Meeting Describing research data in the DataCite metadata schema S3 Goals •Data should be available via opendata.swiss, but we should not just build a solution that works for one data repository •Harvesting information on the relationship between research data and publications should be easy, but we don’t want to customize queries for every data repository Metadata should be harmonized to DataCite when data repositories mint a DOI or update their records
27.11.2025 | SRDSN Fall Meeting Describing research data in the DataCite metadata schema S3 Making research data FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable – is complex and challenging. Create the potential for both humans and machines to find, access, understand, and reuse research data. All projects are committed to ensure that the proposed solutions work alongside each other.
