Selvaraju Associate Professor & Head, Department of History Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli Abstract This article explain to the meritorious services educational and religious contributions of Dr. B. Sivanthi Aditanar to the Tiruchendur region of Tamil Nadu. As the driving force behind the Aditanar Educational Trust, he expanded access to higher education by establishing several institutions that catered to the needs of rural and underprivileged communities. These colleges provided opportunities in diverse fields such as physical education, teaching, engineering, and nursing, thereby equipping youth with the knowledge and professional training necessary for social mobility and community upliftment. His establishment of a women’s college in Kayalpatnam was particularly significant in promoting higher education among Muslim women, empowering them to participate in academic and professional spaces that were previously restricted. Alongside his educational endeavors, Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar made lasting contributions to the religious and cultural life of the region. He undertook the renovation of prominent temples, including the Rajagopuram of the Kasi Viswanathar Temple at Tenkasi, earning him recognition for his dedication to preserving Tamil religious heritage. His service to the Tiruchendur Murugan Temple included the construction of a marriage hall, a golden chariot, and the donation of a golden peacock statue, in addition to enhancing infrastructure for temple processions. He also supported local temples such as Karkuvel Aiyanar and Arunjunai Katha Aiyanar, ensuring their continued importance as centers of faith and community gathering. Through these remarkable initiatives in education and religion, Dr. B. Sivanthi Aditanar not only transformed the academic and spiritual landscape of Tiruchendur but also reinforced a sense of cultural pride and holistic development that endures to this day. Sivanthi Aditanar as the second son of S. P. Adithanar and Govinthammal. He served as an NCC Commandant in college. Though he was the son of S.P. Sivanthi Aditanar, (popularly called Se. Pa. Aditanar) he started his career as a general labourer with Daily Thanthi and gradually worked his way up the ranks to become its Editor. Daily Thanthi was published in three cities Chennai, Madurai and Trichy by S. P. Sivanthi Aditanar succeeded him in the post in 1959. During his tenure, Daily Thanthi became the most widely read Tamil daily newspaper, with circulation in 15 cities across the country. He was also a keen athlete and trained daily. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar can be called “Second Kamarajar”. He himself ran six colleges and provided huge financial assistance to build schools in many colleges. He was a major donar to build a new temples and renovation the temple in Tiruchendur region. He was popularly called “Chinna Ayya” as a mark of respect by the people. Educational Contribution to Tiruchendur Region Educational work started during S. P. Aditanar’s time. “ Aditanar Education Trust” was set up. Its administrator was Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar. Aditanar College was established in Tiruchendur in 1965. Sivanthi Aditanar Education Centers were started in Tiruchendur with the aim of improving the education of the youth in the surrounding villages of Thiruchendur Taluk in the Southern part of Tamil Nadu. Sivanthi Aditanar established five colleges in Tiruchendur region and raised the college to university level. He started Govindhammal Aditanar Women’s College in the name of his mother in Kayalpatnam near this college and this college plays an important role in the graduation of Muslim women today. Following are the five Colleges Established by Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar 1. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Physical Education (1993) 2. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Education (1995) 3. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering (1995) 4. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar Teacher Training College (2004) 5. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Nursing (2011) 6. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Physical Education Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Physical Education was founded in the academic year 1993-1994. It is located along the Tiruchendur to Tirunelveli highway, 3 kilometers from the Tiruchendur Bus Stand and Railway Station. The college campus spans an area of 12 acres and is entirely residential. In 1993, a two-year Master’s program in Physical Education (M.P.Ed) was launched, followed by a one-year Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in 2001 and a one-year Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed) in 2003, all affiliated with Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. Since 2012, the institution has been designated as a “Physical Education Research Centre” by TNPES University. The College boasts exceptional contemporary facilities staffed by skilled and proficient faculty members. In accordance with NCTE regulations, the B.P.Ed. program has transitioned to a two-year format starting from the 2015-16 academic year. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Education Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Education was founded in the academic year 1995 –1996 by Padmashri Dr. B. Sivanthi Aditanar. The college is accreditation of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and the sanction of the Government of Tamil Nadu for the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). It launched the Master of Education (M.Ed) program in the academic year 2006 – 2007, also receiving recognition from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and the approval of the Government of Tamil Nadu. This institution operates as a Co-Education College of Education. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering was founded in 1995 and is situated in Tiruchendur of Tamil Nadu. Recognized by the AICTE, the institution offers a variety of courses including B.E. / B.Tech, MBA/PGDM, M.E./M.Tech, and B.A. programs. Additionally, it presents numerous specializations in Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Business & Management Studies. The institute has a capacity of 399 seats, promoting a greater number of aspirants to acquire knowledge and refine their skills Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar Teacher Training College The Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar Teacher Training Institute commenced operations in the academic year 2004-2005. The institute holds affiliation with NCTE. It is governed by the Aditanar Educational Institution, and the visionary PadmaShri Dr. B. Sivanthi Aditanar established the Institute. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Nursing The Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Nursing a reality. Education, Health, and Service is the main motto of the nursing college he had sown in order to provide good medical care in this rural area. The trust established the Padmashri Dr. Shivanti Aditanar Nursing College in 2011 after getting necessary approvals from the State Government, Indian Nursing Council, State Nursing Council and Dr. MGR Medical College. Religious Contribution Sivanthi Aditanar donated to many Hindu temples and renovated mandapas and chariot towers for many temples. In 1990, he built the 178 feet Rajagopuram of Tenkasi Kasi Vishwanathar Temple, which had fallen into disrepair for about 220 years. Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar was amazed by this feat and Tirumuruga Kripananda variyar awarded him the title of ‘‘Rajaraja Chola of the Twentieth Century.’’ Similarly, during the immersion ceremony, the devotees of crowning by being awarded the title of “Parakrama Pandyan II”. This title was given by Congress President G. K. Mupanar. Minister K. B. Kandasamy, Dhanushkodi Adithan MP, Peter Alphonse M. L. A was presented together. Tenkasi Temple Sri Kasi Viswanatha Swamy Temple, constructed in the fifteenth century, is located in the center of the town. It is referred to as “South Banaras”. This temple has several inscriptions and amazing, finely crafted live statues made of tiny stone. The shenbaga tree is the temple’s Sthala Vriksha. The 172-foot temple tower was constructed in 1456 by King Parakirama Pandian, and the temple is 554 feet in length and 318 feet in width 102. The temple tower was then damaged by thunder in 1924, and Sivanthi Aditanar restored it to a height of 163 feet. In 1981, Chief Minister M.G.R. of Tamil Nadu government gave suggestion, the responsibility was handed over to Dr. Pa. Shivanthi Aditanar. He assumed responsibility as the head of the temple’s task force. Rajagopura started work on 28.11.1984 in 6. years. Parakramapandian completed 50 years of building the Rajagopuram in 6 years. Dr. B. Shivanthi Aditanar bore the cost of completing the first level and the 9th level. All 6 levels from 2 to 7 were completed with funds provided by other temples in Tamil Nadu. The Nadar community contributed funds to the 8th stage and helped to carry out the restoration work. Thus, at a cost of one crore, the 178 feet high, 9 tiered Rajagopuram rose majestically. Religious Services in Tiruchendur Region Tiruchendur Murugan Temple The Kayamozhi Aditanars are closely associated with the Murugan Temple located in Tiruchendur. Tiruchendur Murugan is the family deity. The Tiruchendur temple has received numerous temple renovation services from Kayamozhi Aditanars. It is history that Marutappan Aditanar, the king of Kayamozhi, made a chariot and gave it to Tiruchendur temple in 1675. When the chariot got burnt, the Aditanar made a new chariot again. The honor of starting the Tiruchendur Chariot was given to the Aditanar for making the Chariot. On 15 April, 1970, he built a beautiful wedding hall (Govindhammal Aditanar Wedding Hall) in the Tiruchendur temple in the name of his mother. He has built a beautiful entrance gate to Tiruchendur temple. In 1980 He gave a large amount of money to make a golden chariot for the Tiruchendur temple. He made a new route for the chariot to the Tiruchendur temple. They presented the Thiruchendur Murugan Temple with a golden peacock statue. Karkuvel Aiyanar Temple This temple is situated in the village of Kuthiraimozhi, Theri Kudiyiruppu, 1 kilometer from Kayamozhi, which is 14 kilometers from Thiruchendur. To this temple Sivanthi Aditanar constructed a front hall, an inner hall, and a surrounding wall. Arunjunai Katha Aiyanar temple This temple is situated in the Village of Mealaputhukudi, 11 kilometers distant from Tiruchendur. Sivanthi Aditanar built the temple’s great hall and the vimana. conducted to the Arunjunai Katha Aiyanar temple’s consecration event in Mela Puthukudi, Tiruchendur. This event participate to Kirupananthavariyar. and he constructed the own village Kayamozhi Amman Temple’s art mandapa, he was various contribution into the village. Sivanthi Aditanar Awards Padmashri Dr.B.Sivanthi Aditanar was a multifaceted personality with each facet representing the peak of achievement in different fields. He was a sportsman and sports administrator par excellence. He received honorary doctorates from Madurai-Kamaraj University, Annamalai University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, University of Madras, and Tamil Nadu Physical Education & Sports University in appreciation for his contributions to the various field of education. Awards · Olympic Order of Merit by the International Olympic Committee in 1995 · Gold Medal by International Volley Ball Federation for his contribution to Volley Ball in India. · Sports and Study Award by the International Olympic Committee in 1987 · ‘Padmashri’ Award by the Government of India in 2009 · OCA Merit Award’ on 14.11.2010 by Asian Olympic Council · He received five honorary doctorates from Madurai-Kamaraj University, Annamalai University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, University of Madras, and Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University in appreciation of his contributions to the field of education. Conclusion The contributions of Dr. B. Sivanthi Aditanar to the Tiruchendur region are nothing short of inspiring. His vision for education and deep commitment to spirituality have made a lasting impact. By founding colleges in various fields, he opened the doors of higher learning to young people from rural backgrounds and marginalized communities, allowing education to serve as a powerful means of empowerment and social change.
