AQUASERV - research access to aquaculture, fishery and blue economy across Europe by Andrzej Tkacz, Centre for Marine Sciences in Faro, Portugal What is AQUASERV ? Imagine you are a student in Belgium and your project is about gene expression in a local fish. Your local institute grows many different fish species in big tanks but not the seabass. You want to run RNAseq on fresh tissue of a fish grown in some specific conditions (vitamins addition for example) - you apply to AQUASERV, explain what do you want to do and you get funding to go to Faro in Portugal to run your experiments. (there are ~40 institutes involved, offering ~600 facilities, users can apply from all over Europe and beyond) As this is European funded project, there is a push to implement FAIR principles in this project. Hence, the need for DMP, data submission, controlled vocabulary etc. Data management in AQUASERV CCMAR and VLIZ in Belgium are responsible for it. We want to achieve 70% of the data produced to be submitted to open repository, along with sufficient metadata. Hence we (and the researcher as well !!!) need to understand what type of data is being created, how is it analysed, stored and used, i.e the need for DMPs to be made by the researchers. ARGOS choice We looked at a few platforms as well as some in-house solutions but in the end chosen ARGOS. We went for the PLUS account to be able to create own blueprints and templates. As we have researchers doing multiple type of experiments we decided to use thematic templates (while keeping the blueprint simple - mostly administrative and ethical questions left) Blueprint(s) Templates The main template (FAIR focused) and thematic (mass-spec) DMP integration into AQUASERV AQUASERV data management team (i..e Cymon Cox - CCMAR, Katrina Exter and Joanna Goley - VLIZ and me) prepares instructions, handbook and are running helpdesk Researchers before (preferably) or during their visit start their DMP, and update as necessary. Once they are happy with it, they “finalize” it and send us an email. I review them, give feedback (for example use a dedicated database rather than zenodo to store your data). Once corrected, we ask the researchers to submit their DMP onto zenodo (their own account), from which move them to AQUASERV zenodo account for long term storage. Research after their project write a report where they indicate what data was created and where was it submitted (however, much of the data is being submitted and/or released from embargo only during final publication which may happen 1-2 years after)
