However, uneven access, governance gaps, bias, environmental costs, and economic displacement can undermine equitable, sustainable outcomes. This paper synthesizes recent evidence on AI’s contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reviews representative sectoral applications (smart grids, precision agriculture, health and education), analyzes risks and distributional impacts, and proposes a multi-stakeholder policy and technical framework to channel AI toward inclusive, low-carbon, resilient growth. Key recommendations include strengthening data and compute access in lower-income regions, embedding environmental accounting into AI development, investing in human capital, and developing interoperable governance standards that prioritize rights and equity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies of the 21st century, playing a crucial role in driving sustainable growth across multiple sectors. This research paper explores how AI contributes to achieving long-term economic, social, and environmental sustainability. The study highlights the integration of AI in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, energy management, waste reduction, and climate change mitigation. By enabling predictive analytics, process automation, and smart decision-making, AI enhances efficiency while reducing resource consumption and carbon footprints. Moreover, AI-driven innovations are creating new opportunities for green technology, sustainable urban planning, and circular economy models. However, the paper also addresses potential challenges, including ethical concerns, employment displacement, and the need for inclusive access to AI technologies. Through an analysis of real-world applications and policy frameworks, this research emphasizes that the responsible and equitable use of AI can act as a catalyst for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In conclusion, the study underscores that sustainable growth in the AI era depends not only on technological advancement but also on human-centered governance, collaboration, and ethical innovation. Recent UN reporting highlights stagnation on many SDG targets and explicitly calls for more data-driven decision-making and innovative technologies — including AI — to accelerate progress. Yet the benefits of AI are currently uneven: research shows rapid growth in AI-for-SDG publications concentrated in a few regions, and major institutions warn of governance, equity, and concentration risks if action is not taken. This paper examines how AI can be steered to sustainable growth while managing its socioeconomic and environmental trade-offs. Growth of AI research applied to sustainability: A recent synthesis of peer-reviewed studies found a sharp rise in publications that apply AI to SDGs, with the majority of research emerging from Europe and Asia. This body of work shows both breadth (health, agriculture, energy, water, biodiversity) and limits—research often focuses on technical feasibility rather than deployment at scale or distributional effects. AI technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, and data analytics are now widely used to monitor ecosystems, optimize resource management, and reduce waste across various sectors. In the field of environmental sustainability, AI is being applied to analyze large datasets from satellites and sensors to predict natural disasters, monitor deforestation, and track air and water quality. Research in energy sustainability focuses on AI-based smart grids that balance electricity supply and demand, promote renewable energy integration, and reduce carbon emissions. Similarly, in agriculture, AI research has led to innovations like precision farming, crop disease detection, and soil health analysis, which help improve productivity while conserving natural resources. AI’s role in sustainable urban development is also growing rapidly, with studies focusing on smart cities, efficient waste management, and intelligent transportation systems that minimize pollution and traffic congestion. Moreover, AI is being used in climate modeling to better understand weather patterns and develop effective adaptation strategies. Academic institutions, technology companies, and international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Economic Forum are increasingly funding and supporting AI research that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This steady growth of AI research signifies a shift toward using technology not only for economic progress but also for environmental protection and social welfare. As AI continues to evolve, its potential to address global sustainability challenges will expand further, making it a key driver of innovation for a greener and more equitable future. Representative sectoral applications: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a vital tool for achieving sustainable growth across various sectors. By improving efficiency, reducing waste, and optimizing resource use, AI contributes to the three main pillars of sustainability—economic, environmental, and social development. The following are some key sectoral applications that demonstrate AI’s transformative role in building a sustainable future. 1. Agriculture In agriculture, AI-based technologies such as machine learning and computer vision are being used for precision farming, which enables farmers to monitor soil health, detect crop diseases, and determine the best time for planting and harvesting. Drones and sensors powered by AI help reduce the use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides, promoting eco-friendly farming practices. These innovations lead to higher productivity and lower environmental impact, supporting both food security and sustainable rural livelihoods. 2. Energy AI plays a major role in the energy sector, particularly in managing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.
