Reading proficiency is a fundamental skill that underpins academic success and lifelong learning. In higher education, it encompasses not only the ability to decode written language but also to comprehend, analyze, and apply textual information critically. The growing complexity of modern information environments requires learners to engage in more dynamic and independent reading practices. Traditional teaching approaches, often limited to teacher-centered lectures and rote memorization, no longer meet the diverse needs of today’s students. The rapid advancement of digital technologies and the IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING PROFICIENCY VIA INNOVATIVE TEACHING METHODS Vol..4, Issue 9 ISSN:23490012 I.F. 8.1 NOVEMBER 113 emergence of interactive pedagogies have opened new opportunities for improving reading skills. Innovative teaching methods, by shifting the focus from teaching to learning, encourage active participation, critical inquiry, and collaborative exploration. This study aims to investigate how innovative teaching strategies can effectively enhance students’ reading proficiency and engagement in higher education contexts. In Uzbekistan, recent educational reforms have emphasized digitalization and modernization of teaching methods. The Presidential Decree No. PQ–231 (2022) stresses the integration of digital technology into all levels of education. As universities shift toward student-centered learning, developing reading proficiency through innovative pedagogy becomes essential. However, challenges remain: limited teacher training in digital literacy, lack of access to highquality online reading materials, and traditional assessment systems that prioritize memorization over understanding. Addressing these issues requires both methodological innovation and institutional support. Therefore, this study focuses on exploring how innovative teaching methods can be applied in higher education settings in Uzbekistan to improve reading proficiency, engagement, and motivation among university students. Innovation in education refers to the application of new methods, ideas, or tools that enhance learning outcomes. In the context of reading instruction, innovation means integrating modern pedagogical techniques with technology to create a more dynamic and student-centered learning environment. For example, the flipped classroom model allows students to study reading materials at home and engage in analysis and discussion during class. Similarly, blended learning combines traditional classroom instruction with digital tools, fostering both collaboration and autonomy. Furthermore, gamified reading (using digital quizzes and interactive challenges) and concept mapping techniques help students visualize ideas, summarize texts, and establish logical connections between concepts. These methods not only increase comprehension but also build motivation and Vol..4, Issue 9 ISSN:23490012 I.F. 8.1 NOVEMBER 114 confidence. Literature Review. Several scholars have emphasized the pivotal role of innovation in improving literacy outcomes. Anderson and Pearson (2020) noted that reading comprehension requires active interaction between the reader’s prior knowledge and new information encountered in texts. Nation (2022) highlighted the importance of contextualized reading activities and learner autonomy in developing reading skills in a foreign language. In recent years, methods such as blended learning, flipped classrooms, and digital reading platforms have demonstrated significant pedagogical potential. These approaches integrate technology with human interaction to create flexible and student-centered learning environments. Moreover, interactive reading activities, including concept mapping, gamification, and collaborative annotation, have been found to increase motivation and comprehension levels among university students (Hamidova, 2023). Despite this, many educators still rely on traditional reading exercises that may not fully engage students or address their individual learning needs. Hence, the adoption of innovative teaching methods is crucial to foster meaningful reading experiences. Methodology. Research Design. This study employed a quasi-experimental Vol..4, Issue 9 ISSN:23490012 I.F. 8.1 NOVEMBER 115 design involving both qualitative and quantitative methods. The goal was to assess the impact of innovative teaching methods on students’ reading proficiency compared to traditional instruction. Participants. The research was conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year at two higher education institutions in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. A total of 80 undergraduate students participated, divided into two groups: an experimental group (40 students) and a control group (40 students). Procedure:  The experimental group received reading instruction using innovative techniques, including flipped classroom activities, digital reading tools (e.g., Quizlet, Kahoot, and Mentimeter), and collaborative concept mapping.  The control group followed conventional reading lessons using textbookbased exercises and teacher explanations. Both groups were pre-tested and post-tested on reading comprehension, speed, and vocabulary acquisition. In addition, questionnaires and interviews were conducted to assess students’ motivation and attitudes toward reading. Table 1. Comparison of Students’ Pre-test and Post-test Scores Group Numb er of Students Avera ge Pre-test Score (%) Avera ge Post-test Score (%) Improveme nt (%) Experimen tal Group 40 61.2 89.3 +28.1 Control Group 40 60.7 71.8 +11.1 Interpretation: The data indicate that the experimental group, which was taught using innovative methods, showed a 28% improvement in reading proficiency, while the control group improved by only 11%. This confirms the Vol..4, Issue 9 ISSN:23490012 I.F. 8.1 NOVEMBER 116 positive impact of innovative teaching techniques. Data Collection and Analysis. Data were collected through:  Preand post-tests to measure reading improvement;  Observation checklists to monitor classroom engagement;  Questionnaires to evaluate student motivation; and  Statistical analysis (percentage increase and t-tests) to compare results between groups. Results and Discussion. Quantitative Findings. The results revealed that students in the experimental group improved their reading comprehension scores by 28% compared to only 11% in the control group. Similarly, their reading speed and retention rates were significantly higher. These findings indicate that the use of innovative teaching strategies has a measurable impact on students’ reading proficiency. Qualitative Observations. Observations showed that students in the experimental group were more actively engaged, frequently asked questions, and demonstrated greater enthusiasm during reading sessions. The flipped classroom model, in particular, encouraged independent learning and critical discussion. Interactive tools such as Kahoot quizzes made the learning process more dynamic and enjoyable. Discussion. The findings align with previous research (Oxford, 2021; Nation, 2022), confirming that active, technology-supported learning environments significantly enhance literacy outcomes. Students’ motivation increased as they took greater ownership of their learning process. Furthermore, innovative teaching methods facilitated metacognitive awareness—students became more conscious of how they read and understood texts. However, challenges were noted, including the need for teacher training in digital literacy and the availability of technological resources. Therefore, institutions must provide professional development and technical support to ensure effective implementation. Vol..4, Issue 9 ISSN:23490012 I.F. 8.1 NOVEMBER 117 Conclusion. The study concludes that innovative teaching methods play a vital role in improving students’ reading proficiency. By incorporating approaches such as flipped classrooms, blended learning, and interactive digital tools, educators can make reading instruction more engaging, flexible, and learner-centered. Innovation in teaching not only enhances comprehension skills but also builds motivation, collaboration, and critical thinking – essential competencies for 21stcentury learners. Therefore, educational institutions should prioritize integrating technology and innovative pedagogies into reading curricula while continuously supporting teachers through training and resources.
