The development of academic vocabulary constitutes a fundamental component of language competence for English as a Foreign Language learners pursuing higher education and professional advancement in international contexts [1]. Academic vocabulary, distinguished from general high-frequency words, encompasses specialized terminology and semitechnical expressions that permeate scholarly discourse across disciplines, enabling learners to comprehend academic texts, participate in scholarly discussions, and produce written work that meets the expectations of academic communities. The significance of academic vocabulary acquisition has been extensively documented in second language acquisition research, with scholars consistently emphasizing that insufficient academic lexical knowledge represents a primary obstacle to successful academic performance among non-native English speakers [2].
Dekabr, 2025-Yil 369 However, the emergence of corpus linguistics and technological advancements in language pedagogy have introduced corpus-based instruction as an alternative paradigm that emphasizes authentic language exposure, data-driven learning, and learner autonomy in discovering lexical patterns through direct engagement with large collections of naturally occurring texts [3]. Methodology and Literature Review. The methodological framework adopted in this study comprises a systematic literature review combined with analytical synthesis of theoretical and empirical sources addressing corpus-based instruction and traditional vocabulary teaching approaches. The analytical procedure involved identifying key themes, comparing theoretical assumptions, and synthesizing findings to construct a coherent understanding of the comparative strengths and limitations of each instructional approach [4]. The theoretical foundations of traditional vocabulary teaching derive from behaviorist and structuralist traditions that conceptualize vocabulary acquisition as the accumulation of form-meaning associations through repeated exposure, practice, and reinforcement. Within this paradigm, vocabulary instruction typically proceeds through presentation of target items with definitions and translations, followed by controlled practice exercises such as matching, gap-filling, and sentence completion activities that require learners to demonstrate recognition and productive knowledge of taught items [5]. Proponents of traditional methods argue that explicit instruction provides learners with clear, unambiguous information about word meanings, grammatical properties, and usage restrictions, thereby reducing confusion and establishing accurate foundational knowledge. Furthermore, the systematic organization of vocabulary instruction through word lists, often based on frequency or thematic groupings, enables teachers to ensure comprehensive coverage of target vocabulary and facilitates assessment of learning outcomes through standardized testing procedures. Research conducted by Schmitt demonstrates that explicit vocabulary instruction produces measurable gains in receptive vocabulary knowledge, particularly when combined with multiple exposures and spaced repetition techniques that promote long-term retention [6]. Traditional approaches also offer practical advantages in terms of classroom management, curriculum planning, and accountability, as teachers can clearly specify learning objectives, select appropriate materials, and evaluate student progress against predetermined benchmarks. Corpus-based instruction represents a paradigm shift in vocabulary pedagogy, drawing upon corpus linguistics methodology and data-driven learning principles to engage learners directly with authentic language data [7]. The fundamental premise of this approach holds that learners benefit from investigating concordance lines and frequency information derived from large text corpora, enabling them to discover patterns of usage, collocational relationships, and contextual variations that characterize vocabulary items in natural discourse. Ismoilov emphasizes that corpus-based approaches facilitate the development of language awareness and analytical skills that extend beyond memorization of discrete vocabulary items, fostering deeper understanding of how words function within authentic communicative contexts [8]. Academic vocabulary presents particular opportunities for corpus-based investigation, as learners can examine how specialized terms operate within discipline-specific discourse communities, identifying rhetorical functions, collocational patterns, and register variations that distinguish academic from general language use.
Dekabr, 2025-Yil 370 The Academic Word List developed by Coxhead through corpus analysis has become a foundational resource for academic vocabulary instruction, demonstrating the practical applications of corpus methodology in identifying high-utility vocabulary items for pedagogical attention [2]. Research conducted in various EFL contexts indicates that corpus-based instruction enhances learners' awareness of collocational patterns and promotes more natural, contextually appropriate vocabulary use in productive tasks [9]. However, critics note that corpus-based approaches require significant technological resources, teacher training, and learner preparation, potentially limiting their applicability in resource-constrained educational settings. Results and Discussion. The comparative analysis of literature reveals distinctive patterns regarding the effectiveness of corpus-based and traditional vocabulary teaching approaches in facilitating academic vocabulary development among EFL learners. Traditional instruction demonstrates particular strengths in establishing foundational vocabulary knowledge, providing learners with explicit information about word meanings, grammatical categories, and basic usage patterns that form the basis for subsequent vocabulary development. The structured nature of traditional approaches ensures systematic coverage of target vocabulary items and enables teachers to address specific learning objectives through carefully sequenced instructional activities [5]. Assessment data from various educational contexts consistently indicate that traditional methods produce measurable improvements in receptive vocabulary knowledge, particularly as measured through discrete-point testing instruments that evaluate recognition and recall of taught items. However, the literature also reveals significant limitations of traditional approaches, particularly regarding the transfer of vocabulary knowledge to authentic communicative contexts and the development of deep lexical knowledge encompassing collocational, connotational, and pragmatic dimensions of word meaning [10]. Corpus-based instruction emerges from the literature as particularly effective in developing the contextual and collocational knowledge that characterizes proficient academic vocabulary use. Learners engaged in corpus investigation develop heightened awareness of how academic vocabulary items function within authentic discourse, gaining exposure to multiple contexts of use that illuminate semantic nuances, register variations, and disciplinary conventions [3]. The discovery-oriented nature of corpus-based learning promotes learner autonomy and metalinguistic awareness, equipping students with analytical skills that support continued vocabulary development beyond formal instruction. Research findings suggest that corpus-based approaches are especially beneficial for advanced learners who possess sufficient linguistic foundation to engage productively with authentic language data and can appreciate subtle patterns of usage revealed through concordance analysis [7]. Conclusion. The comparative analysis undertaken in this study illuminates the distinctive contributions of corpus-based instruction and traditional vocabulary teaching to EFL learners' academic vocabulary development. Traditional methods provide essential foundational knowledge through explicit instruction and systematic practice, establishing the basis for subsequent vocabulary expansion and ensuring coverage of target lexical items. Corpus-based approaches complement this foundation by developing contextual awareness, collocational knowledge, and analytical skills that support authentic academic vocabulary use.
Dekabr, 2025-Yil 371 The findings suggest that neither approach alone adequately addresses the multidimensional nature of academic vocabulary competence, which encompasses both declarative knowledge of word meanings and procedural knowledge of contextually appropriate usage. Effective vocabulary instruction therefore requires thoughtful integration of traditional and corpus-based methodologies, calibrated to learner proficiency levels, institutional resources, and specific learning objectives.
