COSERIU’S PRINCIPLE OF LEXICAL SOLIDARITY Khuraman Asgarova SALIM – PhD, Assoc.prof. Department of Lexicology and Stylistics of the German Language, Faculty of English and German Languages Azerbaijan University of Languages https://orcid.org/000-0003-2362-0360 doi e-mail This article provides a comprehensive analysis of Eugenio Coseriu’s principle of lexical solidarity, one of the key components of his structural semantics framework. It elucidates the relationship between lexemes, archilexemes, classes, and classemes, emphasising that lexical meaning is not isolated but defined by internal systemic relations. The study explores the directional and paradigmatic nature of solidarity, distinguishing unilateral and bilateral types, and assesses its analytical potential in lexicography, diachronic semantics, and language teaching. Integrating recent developments in lexical and computational semantics (2020–2025), the article highlights the enduring relevance of Coseriu’s relational approach in current research, particularly in areas involving semantic networks, cross-linguistic analyses, and applied linguistics. It also outlines challenges for empirical and computational operationalisation and proposes extending the principle to typologically diverse languages, including Azerbaijani. Key words: lexical solidarity, structural semantics, rchilexeme and classeme, Paradigmatic relations, Computational lexicography, Eugenio Coseriu In modern linguistics, Eugenio Coseriu is recognised for a wide range of innovative ideas in general linguistics, philosophy of language, structural semantics and related areas. His contributions are known to many scholars of Azerbaijani linguistics, yet it is fair to observe that his views on structural semantics are still not fully incorporated across the field. In this article we shall attempt to explicate Coseriu’s conception of structural semantics with specific attention to his notion of «lexical solidarity». We will then locate this notion within more recent research (last five years) in lexical and structural semantics to assess its continuing relevance and potential avenues of application. Coseriu’s Structural Semantics: Core Concepts Coseriu’s approach to structural semantics is premised on the idea that lexical meaning does not float free but is embedded within systems of relations: lexical fields (Wortfeld), classes, archilexemes, lexemes, and classemes. To clarify: Lexical field (Wortfeld): A paradigm or system of lexical items that arise through segmentation of the continuum of lexical meaning into discrete units and which are opposed to one another by differential semantic features. For example, in German: jung–neu–alt (young–new–old) can be taken as such a paradigm. Lexeme: Each unit in the language functioning as a simple lexical item (i. e., a word-form with meaning and lexical identity). Archilexeme: The unit encompassing the total meaning of a lexical field; in many instances a higher-level lexical unit under which various lexemes fall. For instance, in German Rind (cattle) may serve as archilexeme for Ochse (ox), Kuh (cow), Bulle (bull) etc.; further, Tier (animal) may serve as a still higher archilexeme. Class (classis): A set of lexemes which, regardless of word-field structure, share a common meaning-differentiating feature, and which function grammatically and lexically analogously (e. g., the class of animate beings, or the class of transitive verbs). © Khuraman Asgarova SALIM., 2025 Стаття поширюється на умовах ліцензії CC BY 4.0
Актуальні питання культурології. Випуск 24/2025 27 Classeme: The semantic feature that defines a class (for example, [+animate], [-animate]; [+human], [-human]). Classes may be hierarchical, and classemes may intersect (for example, male/female may determine human vs non-human classes). Coseriu warns not to equate classes with word-fields: a word-field reflects a lexical continuum and relations of opposition within it, whereas a class is defined by a meaning-differentiating feature and may include lexemes from different word-fields; conversely, lexemes from the same class may belong to different word-fields. Lexical Solidarity: Definition and Function. Coseriu’s key notion of lexical solidarity is defined as follows: when a given word’s meaning is defined (in part) through its association with a class, archilexeme or lexeme that functions as a differentiating semantic feature for that word, then that word stands in a directional relation of solidarity to that class/archilexeme/lexeme. In other words, solidarity is a paradigmatic relation: it is not a matter of derivation or word-formation, but of a system-internal semantic relation. Directionality. Solidarity is directional: a lexeme (or word) may be defined by its relation to an archilexeme (unexpressed or implicit) or class, and this relation constitutes its solidarity. For example, German fahren («to travel by vehicle») may be defined (implicitly) by reference to a vehicle-movement archilexeme; similarly hämmern («to hammer») is secondary to Hammer («hammer»), but in this case the relation is derivational, not solidarity, because hämmern is derived from Hammer. Coseriu emphasises that development or derivation are syntagmatic phenomena (concerned with word-formation in context), whereas solidarity is paradigmatic (concerned with meaning-system relations). Unilateral and Bilateral Solidarities. Coseriu differentiates between two types: Unilateral solidarity: Here a defined lexeme invokes (or implies) another lexeme (or class/archilexeme) and there is no alternative lexeme that could replace it within the relation. Example: beißen («to bite») implies Zahn («tooth») and there is no other lexeme substitutable in that relation; similarly lecken («to lick») implies Zunge («tongue»). Bilateral solidarity: Here the defined lexeme is opposed to other lexemes through differentiating features, and its meaning depends on the meaning of a class or archilexeme in full. Example: German bellen («to bark») applies exclusively to Hund («dog») (and not Pferd, «horse») – the solidarity is bilateral because the defined lexeme is contrasted to alternatives within the same class/archilexeme. Implications for semantic-analysis. The principle of lexical solidarity points to the system-internal coherence of meanings: words do not stand alone but gain part of their meaning through their place in lexical fields, classes and archilexemes. In practice, this allows a semantic analyst or lexicographer to identify the «defining» lexemes (or classes/archilexemes) and the «defined» lexemes, trace the relational structure and understand how semantic differentiation functions within a lexical system. Applications and Analytical Potential. The concept of lexical solidarity has several applications: Lexicography and dictionary design: Recognising solidarity relations allows dictionary‐makers to highlight the internal semantic relations of words, rather than treating meanings as isolated entries. For example, a lexeme’s definition may explicitly refer to the archilexeme or class that differentiates it. Semantic field analysis: Researchers of lexical semantics (especially from a structural perspective) can map word-fields and trace solidarity relations to uncover hidden paradigmatic links among words. Diachronic and synchronic semantics: The principle helps account for how lexical fields evolve (e. g., new lexemes may be integrated into an existing archilexeme) and how meaning differentiation occurs synchronically within a system. Language teaching and vocabulary instruction: The notion of lexical solidarity can inform how vocabulary is grouped, taught and internalised: teaching words by emphasising their relational position may enhance learners’ semantic awareness. Recent Research and Relevance. In the last five years, although not always explicitly citing Coseriu, related currents in lexical and structural semantics have emerged which resonate with the principle of lexical solidarity. Below we summarise several strands of research and highlight how they can be seen as complementing or extending Coseriu’s ideas. Lexical semantics dynamics and meaning change. A recent study by Carling, Cronhamn, Lundgren, Bogren Svensson & Frid (2023) examines the evolution of lexical semantics, including directionality and drift in lexical meaning systems. They address
Альманах наукового товариства «Афіна» кафедри культурології та музеєзнавства Рівненського державного гуманітарного університету 28 how lexical semantic networks change over time and across language families. This interest in directionality and drift aligns with Coseriu’s view of solidarity relations as directional and system-internal: meaning does not simply vary randomly, but is shaped within lexical systems. Cross-linguistic representation of lexical knowledge. Grasso & Di Caro (2023) investigate cross-lingual representation of prototypical lexical knowledge in lexical resources and mention that many resources focus on limited semantic levels rather than the full lexical system. Their observation highlights the need for richer models of lexical systems – precisely the kind of model Coseriu advocated with his classes/archilexemes/lexemes and solidarity relations. Lexical semantics: domain-specific vs general lexica. A 2024 study (Languages 2024 9 (3): 89) explores modelling semantic similarity between common and specialised lexica (for example, domain-specific versus general language). The differentiation between domainspecific and general lexica echoes Coseriu’s concern with classification and solidarity: words within a general lexicon may stand in solidarity relations to archilexemes/classes differently than those in specialist lexica. Structural-semantic analyses in multilingual/cross-cultural settings. A structural-semantic analysis of lexical units in English and Uzbek, published in 2023, examines cross-linguistic convergence/divergence of lexical units in entrepreneurial discourse. While not explicitly referencing Coseriu, this research utilises the idea of lexical units being embedded in semantic networks and structures, which resonates with solidarity-based analysis of lexical fields. Syntax-lexical semantics interface and structural relations. A narrative review (International Journal of Language and Linguistics, 2023) of studies on the syntaxlexical semantics interface – with special reference to Chinese – emphasises how lexical semantics is not isolated from syntactic structure. Although Coseriu focuses largely on paradigmatic relations (semantic rather than syntactic), the modern emphasis on interface reinforces the idea that lexical meaning must be analysed within its relational system, as solidarity emphasises. Implications for teaching and applied linguistics. A 2022 study on semantics of lexical and phraseological units as means of developing students’ English skills (INTED 2022) calls attention to the insufficient attention to semantic structure of polysemantic and phraseological units. This echoes the pedagogical dimension of Coseriu’s framework: recognising solidarity relations may strengthen vocabulary teaching by emphasising relational semantic structure rather than isolated word lists. Summary of relevance. These recent studies collectively suggest that: The relational view of lexical meaning (central to Coseriu) remains relevant in contemporary lexicographic, computational, and corpus-based semantics. Concepts such as directionality, semantic drift, lexical systems (general vs specialised) align with Coseriu’s classes/archilexemes/lexemes distinction and solidarity principle. Applied fields (teaching, multilingual lexica, domain lexica) benefit from insights akin to solidarity analyses – even if not explicitly cast in Coseriu’s terminology. Integrating Coseriu’s Principle with Contemporary Approaches Given the ongoing relevance of relational semantics, how might one integrate Coseriu’s lexicalsolidarity principle within contemporary frameworks? Mapping solidarity relations in computational lexica. Computational lexical databases (word-nets, cross-lingual lexica) could be enhanced by explicitly encoding solidarity relations: i. e., linking lexemes to their archilexeme and class, and marking directionality (unilateral vs bilateral) of solidarity. For example, a word sense entry might include «this lexeme stands in unilateral solidarity to archilexeme X via classeme Y». Diachronic lexical-field change analysis In lexical change studies (for example those dealing with semantic drift or lexical replacement), the notion of solidarity offers a way of tracking how new lexemes integrate into existing lexiceme systems, replacing or supplementing defined lexemes, and thereby modifying solidarity networks. Pedagogical vocabulary grouping. In vocabulary teaching, rather than presenting sets of unrelated words, one can organise lexicalsolidarity-based clusters: present a class (e. g., [-animate object]), its archilexeme, and the lexemes linked by solidarity. This helps students appreciate internal lexical structure (and fosters deeper lexical mastery). Cross-lingual semantic field analysis. For languages undergoing typological or sociolinguistic change (e.g., contact zones, immigrant
Актуальні питання культурології. Випуск 24/2025 29 languages), analysts might trace how solidarity relations differ across languages, how archilexemes and classes map, and how lexical fields restructure under contact or shift. The 2023 English-Uzbek study cited above is an initial step in this direction. Critiques, Limitations and Further Research. While Coseriu’s principle of lexical solidarity remains conceptually rich, some issues merit attention: Abstraction vs empirical measurable annotation: Coseriu’s concepts (archilexeme, class, solidarity) are high-level and somewhat abstract; mapping them into large corpora or computational lexica remains challenging. Diachronic coverage: Although solidarity is conceived synchronically (within a lexical system), extensions to diachronic lexical change require further specification – how exactly do solidarity relations evolve, dissolve or re-form? Interface with syntax and pragmatics: While Coseriu emphasises paradigmatic (systemic) relations, modern work increasingly emphasises the syntax-semantics interface and pragmatic variation (see the review on syntax-lexical semantics). Integration of solidarity with syntagmatic and pragmatic phenomena may enrich the model, but such integration is still underdeveloped. Applicability across languages: Much of Coseriu’s work uses German-based examples; further empirical work is needed in typologically diverse languages (especially non-Indo-European) to test whether solidarity relations operate universally or are language-specific. Computational operationalisation: For large-scale lexica and NLP systems, how to operationalise solidarity (unilateral/bilateral) remains a methodological gap – although recent work on semantic typology and representation (e.g., domain-specific vs general lexica) begins to approach it. Further research could address: (a) the automated identification of solidarity relations in lexical networks; (b) explicit diachronic modelling of solidarity trajectories; (c) cross-linguistic surveys of solidarity structures in typologically different languages; (d) integration of solidarity with syntax/pragmatics in dynamic lexical modelling. Conclusion. In summary, Eugenio Coseriu’s principle of lexical solidarity remains a compelling theoretical tool for understanding the internal relational structure of the lexicon: how words gain meaning through their place in systems of classes, archilexemes and lexemes, and how directionality (unilateral or bilateral) plays a role. While the studies from the 1960 s laid its foundations, the last five years of research in lexical/structural semantics, computational lexica and vocabulary pedagogy underscore its continued relevance. What remains is the challenge of operationalising and extending the model into typologically varied languages, across diachronic change, and into computational and pedagogic applications. For Azerbaijani linguistics and neighbouring fields, applying Coseriu’s solidarity principle to Azerbaijani lexical fields (and possibly bilingual phenomena, immigrant-language contexts, or diachronic Azerbaijani lexica) promises to open new research directions. Should you wish, I can prepare a set of Azerbaijani-language examples of solidarity relations (e.g., lexemes in Azerbaijani mapped to archilexemes/ classes) and propose a schematic for further empirical work.
