SUI\/II\/IARY Two factors have determined the actual deterioration state of the Cathedral of Cádiz, one is natural and the other is anthropogenic. On one hand, the presence of salts conditioned by atmospherical environment and saline solutions of the rising damp; on the other hand, the vicisitudes suffered by the temple during its construction, having been unprotected for long periods of time both internally and externally the bad use of the building and the little maintenance carried out on it. The crystallization and disolution, and salt hydratation and dehydratation mechanisms have provoked serious deteriorations in the foreign lithotypes: spalling in compact limestones, chipping and pulverizations in marbles; the autochthonous "ostionera", well-balanced in the medium, presents a good state of conservation. The interior of the Cathedral, contrary to the normal, is much more degraded than the exterior. INTRODUCTION Ttie great properity readied by Cádiz in the eighteenth century, the growth of the city and the fact that its port was becoming one of the most important in the world made old Santa Cruz church, built at the end of the sixteenth century, seem small and not in being with the new situation. In 1722 work began being full of ups and downs, these being of great importance in the processes of deterioration of the stone. Laying of the first stone. Lateral vaults are covered. Work stopped. The church is used as a warehouse for war suplies, wood, corpse deposit, rigging, etc. The dome of the cross-bearer is opened as well as the vault behing the choir. The chapel of San Firmo is set on fire. Work is recommenced. The dome is closed. The temple is consacrated without the works being finished. Chapter council's note in which they inform that the embossments of the vault are falling off. Work is finished without constructing the sacrarium nor the hall of capitulary affairs The windows and shutters are broken due to the explosion of the powder-magazine in Cádiz. 1. ENVIRONMENTAL SURROUNDINGS The Cathedral de Cádiz is located in the South of the city nex tto the sea, only separated from this by the Maritime Walk. There is a square in front of the main facade wich faces North; there two Vestries and the Capilla de las Reliquias on the Southern side and the main vestry and antevestry on the Western side. 1.1. Climate Cádiz belongs to the attenuated continental climatical region, Southern area. The most important data, obtained from readings taken by the San Fernando (Cádiz) Marine Naval Institute and Observatory and the National Institute of Metereology between 1961 and 1985 are as follows: The temeratures are high during a great part of the year, August being the hottest month with an average daily maximum temperature of 27,7° C. In the respect, the influence of frosts can be discarded as the coldest month is January and the average daily minimum temperature is 5,5° C The daily oscillation of temperature (maximum-minimum) has an average during the year of 13,3° C, July being the highest one with an average oscillation of 14,7° C. La humedad relativa media anual es del 75 %, alcanzando sus valores máximos en enero y diciembre con una media diaria del 82 % y mínimos en julio y agosto en que, aún así, la media es del 69 %. The average yearly relative humidity is 75 % reaching its maximum values in January and December at 82 % and minimum values in July and August when, even then, reach 69 %. From October to March the average monthly relative humidity is above 75 %. The maximum oscillations in relative humidity, comparing the maximum and minimum values of each day, are in July, with increases of only 25 %; the lowest oscillations are about 11 % in January. The average yearly rainfall is 596 l/m^. November is month with the highest average rainfall of 113 l/m^ and July lowest with 0.3 l/m2. The dominating direction of winds during the year is ESE, wich represents about 45 % and WNW at 30 %. ESE is generally the direction of the maximum speed of winds with an average yearly maximum of 83 km/h; so the winds are strong. The average yearly wind speed is 16 km/h. 1.2. Pollution \Ne do not have at our disposal data about the contamination but given the urban characteristics and scope climatology, some considerations can made. In general, the area, next to the sea, is well swept by the winds so the renewal of air is frequent and we suppose that the immission values of anthropogeneous contaminants are low. Not so the marine aerosols which the dominating winds bring from the sea and strike on the building, above all the Southern face wich is even splashed by sea water on days of strong waves, more so before the maritime walk was built Smoke reaches its maximium concentration in the square situated to the North, with circulating traffic and more protected from the winds. 1.3. Subsoil The topographical situation of the building, very near the sea, originates the presence of an important rising damp very rich in salts wich affects, above all, the walls of the crypt. 2. PETROUS MATERIALS The main petrous materials employed in the construction of the Cathedral of Cádiz are the following. The foundations and inside lines of MATERIALES DE CONSTRUCCIÓN, Vol.40, n.» 220, octubre/noviembre/diciembre 1990 © Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas Licencia Creative Commons 3.0 España (by-nc) http://materconstrucc.revistas.csic.es
La regulación se entiende referida al límite de tiempo de the first body of the building are a biocalcarenite from the Puerto Real quarry (Cádiz) of coarse texture with abundants fossils of great resistance. The lines of the second body, partition walls and some lateral chapels are an oolitic limestone from Torcal de Antequera, very dense and compact. The pilasters of the second body, the shell of the main facade and the sphere room of the main chapel are an oolitic limestone from Estepa (Seville) also compact and dense although a little less than the former. The plaques covering the first body, the capitals and columns and the lateral portals of the main facade are dolomitic marble from Mijas. Vázquez (1986) offers a more detained relationship of materials. 3. MACROSCOPIC MORPHOLOGY OF THE DETERIORATIONS A description by facades will be made, starting with the Main one, facing North. A description of the visual indicators of deterioration on each facade, after some previous considerations about the existing lithotypes, climate, urbanism, environment and biological agents, is made following a methodical criteria in wich the superficial modifications, disjuntions, deformations, eliminations of material and ruptures, using the systematized terms by the authors (Martin 1990) are studied. 3.1. Main facade Two types of stone are basically distinguished whose distribution is easily appreciated due to the great difference in colour between both (Figure la). The lower half of the facade is a dark limestone, Manilva-type and the higher a white limestone, oolitic Estepa-type, more compact and with a better superficial finishing. In the bibliography, Mijas and Isla de León quarries are also cited as suppliers of the white limestone. Other materials used are white marble in the pediments of the doors and coloured marble in the chaplets and columns. In the socles a compact grey limestone has been employed. The presence of mortars used as repairing material has been observed in places which were possibly deteriorated by the rising damp. The fagade is oriented towards the North and before it lies a square with circulation traffic and where parking is allowed and regulated by the Town Hall. The regulation is understood to refer to the time limit for parking, not to the MATERIALES DE CONSTRUCCIÓN, Vol. 40, n.° 220, octubre/noviembre/dlciembre 1990 © Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas Licencia Creative Commons 3.0 España (by-nc) http://materconstrucc.revistas.csic.es
The frequent removal of vehicles, which on starting produce a great quantity of smokes, as well as the free circulation, contaminate the environment whith carbonaceous particles. The biggest development of colonies of lichens is on the horizontal or rampant surfaces, like in the cap of the socles. The formation of superficial deposits of carbonaceous material which on this facade acquires a greater importance is favoured by two factors. On one hand, the dark limestone of the lower half of the facade, being more porous and lesspolished than the white one, the retention of dirtiness is nearly homogeneous on all the surface, only the corners, more windswept and washed by water from some superior element are cleaner (Figure 1a). However, the white limestone presents the larger deposits underneath the cornices, where the retention of humidity and the development of micro-organisms favours the fixing and coherency of the deposits, the rest of the surface being cleaner (Figure 1a). The lateral portals, of white marble, are completely backened by the deposits^ only the areas washed by dripping water being open to the air (Figure lb). On the salient elements such as chaplets, socles, stylobates, etc. does seabird's dung exist. The presence of efflorescencies is irrelevant here in comparison with the rest of the building, above all inside; but there are also some efflorescencies above all in the joints of the marble blocks in the lateral portals. In areas with slinght humidity cycles the falling of deposits is in the form of film disjunctions which leaves the underlying material almost unaltered or with slight disaggregations (Figure Id), but where the aforementioned cycles are more intense, as under cornices, disintegrations are frequent (Figure 1e) with losses of material which can end up as pitting. This cornice effect is more pronounced in the dark limestone than in the white and more in the lower cornices than the higher ones. The columns bases and entablature of the main portal as well as the same elements of the superior window together with its pediment present a general state of pitting (Figure If). In the dark limestone of the first body, differential deteriorations between some blocks and others can be found, so that next to ashlars whose only deteriorations are the patina of the weather and superficial deposits, others present grain disgregations, pitting, alveolar erosions and striations. Striations have also been observed in the grey limestone in the socles (Figure 2a). The so-called red jasperite of the chaplets of the stilobates and the door-jambs of the main portal, which are really coloured marbles, offer a great number of superficial cracks which lead to the loss of a multitud small fragments in the most angulated parts, and in chipping form on the smooth surfaces which gives them a certain lock of "small-pox pitting", even when it is not talking about alveolar erosions (Figure 2b). One of the columns of the portal presents a great fissure (Figure 2c); as well as one of the plinths. In the pilaster which joins the central lane of the facade to the lateral ones a great multitud of cracks, fissures and spalling, up to a height of somewhat more than two metres, they have endeavoured to hide with cement, but this has partly fallen off, reproducing the underlying deterioration in the way of a radiograph. In the grey limestone of the socles, besides the striation already commented on, the fissuring also seeems to follow the orientation of layers (Figure 2d) and the cases of spalling are very numerous, above all in the angles of the ashlars with the loosening of small pieces which leave very angulated gaps (Figure 2e). In the towers of white limestone which flank the facade all the aforementioned types of deterioration are given but distributed whith certain criteria (Figure 2f). On one hand, the surfaces facing North, above all those most protected from the rain such as those under the cornices, present black deposits which when they fall off leves the underlying surface disintegrated. On the other hand, the surfaces facing South, including those under the cornices, are clean except in certain parts protected from the wind as those between the capitals of the pales of columns. However, in this orientation or perhaps better to the South East is where the deteriorations produced by mechanisms in which the wind has a prevailing role, i.e., pitting and alveolar erosions, are most frequently found with a differential characters from some blocks to others. In summary, the deteriorations which are outstanding in this fagade, sheltered from the dominant winds and shade, are the desposits 12 MATERIALES DE CONSTRUCCIÓN, Vol.40, n.» 220, octubre/noviembre/diciembre 1990 © Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas Licencia Creative Commons 3.0 España (by-nc) http://materconstrucc.revistas.csic.es
Los depósitos superficiales ennegrecen la portada de San Guzman, sobre todo las capiteias de los contrafuertes y bajo las cornisas, más en el primer cuerpo que en ios accompanied by disintegrations, greater under the cornices of the lower levels; a pitting which spreads in a generalized way all over the face, and the ruptures in his different degrees which fundamentally affect the socles. 3.2. Western Facade The tower, as has already been described on the main fagade, has been built with white limestone in its higher half while a Manilva-type, dark limestone was used in the lower half; a grey limestone was used for the socle. The rest of the facade is basically "ostionera" biocalcarenite and the enclosing wall of the sacristy a grey slate. The frames are white limestone as is the higher body. The dome of the cross-bearer is covered by orange-coloured tiles. The distribution of materials can be seen at once due to the colour differences and macroscopical textures (Figure 3a). The "ostionera" stone, perhaps due to its coarse appearance, must have been covered with a coat of plaster which has nearly disappeared, leaving only some hardened remains on the edges of the large natural gaps of this stone which gives a coralline appearance. As is usual, repairs carried out in cement have been found. Due to its orientation to the West, this facade is sheltered from the strong dominating Easterly winds (really ESE) however, it receives the lighter yet frequent Westerly winds (WNW). The adjacent street is open to traffic. The most abundant biological agents are lichens which cover the rampants as well as the dome and small dome of the lantern in the lantern in the antesacristy; this is the place where the most shaded areas are found with humid stairs where moss grows. The development of higher plant life is sporadic (Figure 3b). Under the cornices, above all the lower levels and in the more shaded areas, large biological crusts can be formed; this is the case in Figure 3c corresponding to the Northern face of the sacristy. Besides being shaded the eaves are broken and water penetrates into the stone and this remains in a state of constant humidity. The superficial deposits blacken the Portada de San Guzman, above all on the capitals of the buttresses and under the cornices, more on the first body than on the higher ones and MATERiAIJhS DE CONSTRUCCIÓN, Vol. 40, n.° 220, octubre/noviembre/diciembre 1990 13 © Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas Licencia Creative Commons 3.0 España (by-nc) http://materconstrucc.revistas.csic.es
El viento provoca fuertes erosiones en los elementos más aireados. the first cornice, practically confined to the weather goove (Figure 5b) and the soffits of the window lintels. The "ostionera" stone, as on the Western facade, still has some deposits of an ancient coat of plaster (Figure 5c & d). The oolitic limestone of the cornices and dome undergoes a certain disaggregation due to the superficial loss of cement which joins the oolitic (Figure 5c) and reaches a state of disintegration in some blocks (Figure 5d). The Chapel marble presents pitting which spreads all over the parament (Figure 5e) becoming greater at ground level probably due to rising damp (Figure 5f) and in the window-posts due to whirlwinds formed in the openings (Figure 6a). As is known, it is the united action of humidity and wind which leads to loss of material and the forming of openings, i.e., pitting, alveolar erosions and craters. Other openings, of anthropogeneous origin, are the holes for staples used for fastening cables. Some cases of vermiform striation occur such as in Figure 6b. The statues which crown the domes of main and Reliquias Chapels are limestone which is subjected to strong winds. They show a great erosion (Figure 6c) while the marble figures which adorn the balaustrade, and are less exposed to the wind, are in a better state of conservation (Figure 6d). Chipping, scaling (Figure 6b), fissuring (Figure 6e) and spalling also occur in the marble in this chapel, above all the latter in the chaplets of the openings near the ground (Figure 6f). In summary, as it has commented on the main facade, the deterioration mechanisms related to the increase in volume in capillaries and interstices are wellaccepted by the "ostionera" stone which shows a good state of conservation. They produce diverse degrees of decohesion in the oolitic limestone and pitting in the marble. We should point out that marble plaques were placed without the least consideration to the structural plans and although there is no deterioration in this case they do have a certain unsightly effect. The wind provokes strong erosions in the most aerated elements. 20 MATERIALES DE CONSTRUCCIÓN, Vol. 40, n.° 220, octubre/noviembre/cliciembre 1990 © Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas Licencia Creative Commons 3.0 España (by-nc) http://materconstrucc.revistas.csic.es
3.4. Eastern Fa9ade This fagade shows the same distribution of lithotypes as the Western one. The two characteristics which make this facade different to the Western one from an environmental point of view are, firstly, its orientation toward the strong dominating Westerly winds and, secondly, the proximity of neighbouring houses especially the episcopal residence which is practically joined to it, which means the lower half of the fagade is sheltered from the winds while the higher one has no protection whatsoever to the winds. There is no circulating traffic in this area. As for the biological agents, some lichens can found on the horizontal or rampant surfaces, such as on the domes, and the sporadic growth of higher plant-life. The deposits show a distribution intimately bound to wind exposure. Therefore we can observe that they are abundant on the less exposed areas such as under the lower cornices of the septentrional half of the fagade (Figure 7a) and the first body of portal (Figure 7b). However, they are somewhat less abundant on to the second body and do not practically exist on the third except on the soffits of the cornice (Figure 7c). The rest of surfaces at this level to the left of the portal are clean except for some areas protected from the wind such as a window in the drum apsis in which an abutment makes a certain sceen-like effect The cornice situated in the area to the left of the portal does not have any deposits as on the right side. However, the typical disaggregations of this oolitic limestone appear (Figure 7d) with some losses of oolites. In the limestone of the tower and drum wainscot there are deep disaggregations, even pulverizations, with abundant losses of material (Figure 7e & f). Pitting and alveolar erosions are also frequent in the tower. The statues that surround the drum and the ones that crown it have experimented a great erosion (Figure 7f). One of them is undergoing a serious spalling due to the placing of supporting iron anchor for an electric cable. In summary, the surfaces of the third level and meridional half are the most exposed to winds so they are cleaner of deposits but it is where greater losses of matter are seen. The drum wainscot shows the effect of orientation very well as it can be studied in all its 360° with its Eastern and Southern orientations being the most deteriorated. The ruinous state in which the limestone of the window frame of Figure 4b of the Western fagade is found is also ilustrative when compared to its twin on this fagade on a parament sheltered from the winds, in a good state of conservation. 3.5. Interior The variety of lithotype used in the interior is very wide, their distribution being as follows: the structural part of the first body up to the capitals is constructed with very porose, middle-grained calcarenites like the "ostionera", and more compact, finer-grained others, both of them light ocrecoloured. The lines of ashlars and pilasters of the higher body and the quarter of sphere in the Main Chapel are constructed with clastic and oolitic limestones like those from Torcal and Estepa. The relieves and sculptures of the third body are white limestone; numerous placators exist in the socles, bases, pedestals and pilasters as well as chaplets which are made of different coloured marbles. The most aggressive extrinsical factors of deterioration are the hydraulic-type environmental ones, related to the high rising damp as well as relative humidity to the air, comprising between 75 and 95 % for a balanced temperature of 18 to 20° C. The. most important salts because of their concentration and participation in the deterioration mechanisms are the sodium carbonates and sulfates, the latter being more abundant in the lower areas, which makes us think of the water from the soil as a supplying source although it could also procede from some mortars. The chlorides are also important although they are less abundant than on the exterior The sodium carbonate as well as the sulfate hydrate with ten molecules of water in the environmental conditions aforementioned and it is precisely during the humid periods when a greater number of spalling are detected in the limestones as will be illustrated later. As the sodium chloride needs a relative humidity lower than 75 % for its crystallization it does not directly intervene in the deterioration but indirectly it does by producing an increase in solubility in the limestone by saline effect provoking the crystallization of the decahydrated sodium carbonate and MATERIALES DE CONSTRUCCIÓN, Vol. 40, n.° 220, octubre/noviembre/dlciembre 1990 23 © Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas Licencia Creative Commons 3.0 España (by-nc) http://materconstrucc.revistas.csic.es

An increase in the calcite crystals can also be produced by induced crystallization. It could be to think over the possible dedolomitization of the f^ijas marble due the great solubility of the magnesium salts. As less important superficial deterioration indicators we can mention limonitizations and other chromatic alterations in the marbles of certain columns and pilasters. The patinature of the presbytery columns is outstanding due to the application of petroleum. Some have a strong dark crust perhaps due to the combined effect of smoke and in the fire in 1832. It is difficult to find a better representation of concretions than those found on the walls and ceiling of the triforium; water percolates from the outside bringing calcic carbonate which crystallizes on the surface forming a deposit which, in the case of the ceiling, become stalactites (Figure 8a). The most frequent deterioration in all the Cathedral are the efflorescencies. Although the salt solutions find a preferential way through the Joints of the ashlars (Figure 8b), these ascend easily through the porose calcarenite, the skeleton of the building, and reach the surface of the marble plaques of Falla's tomb in the crypt (Figure 8c), where the limits of grain where said solutions have migrated are revealed, as well as the marbles of the socles, pedestals, etc., of the higher floor When falls of superficial matter occur subflorescencies are made visible (Figure 8d). The internal ruptures of capillaries and interstices by crystallization lead to grain disgregation in the calcarenite (figure 8f) and pulverizations in the marbles where it is possible sometimes to take very friable pieces off by simple finger pressure (Figure 8f); or disjunctions, chipping (Figure 9a) as well as scaling (Figure 9b) which affect all the building, mainly the socles, column bases and the crypt. These disjunctions also make it think of frontal attack produced when the relative humidity increases, wherefore the deliquescence of deposits of sodium carbonate occurs in the small fissures and a later decahydrated crystallization within them occurs; the existence of this salt, possibly due to the efforescencies which fall from above, can be revealed by the simple use of a suitable indicator 26 MATERIALES DE CONSTRUCCIÓN, Vol.40, n.« 220, octubre/noviembre/diciembre 1990 © Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas Licencia Creative Commons 3.0 España (by-nc) http://materconstrucc.revistas.csic.es
When tile tensions are distributed aii over a piane they lead to warping (Figure 9c). A great part of the marbles, above all in the socles and column bases, are affected by fissuring and cracking. The most surprising thing we can see in the interior of the Cathedral is the continuous fall of different-sized fragments of stone from the relieves of the domes, sculptures and cornices. This has led to the installation of a protection net to catch said fragments, and to keep the cult of the temple, which has been reopened recently. This net has been extended throughout the interior at a height of the first cornice and, periodically has to be emptied of the fallen material (Figure 9d). All the domes are badly effected by this phenomenum (Figure 9e) and some have even lost all their figures. We must point out that this phenomenum was detected when the building was first brought into use, according to Capillary minutes. The ornaments, sculptures and cornices show a greater degradation in the proximities of the windows (Figure 9f). The strias of the fusts also undergo small spallings which break the brilliance of the salient angles. In summary, the presence of salts, due largely to the period when the temple was open to the exterior, together with the microclimatic conditions, especially the range in oscillations of humidity and temperature, are the ones which will determine the main deterioration mechanisms. These lead to the serious spalling that affects the limestone mainly in the higher areas, and the efflorescencies, chipping and decohesions of the marble, above all in the lower parts of the building.
