Becquer Hum337’s Becquer Hum337’s Becquer Hum337’s Becquer Hum337’s Becquer Hum337’s Manuel Fernando Mancera Martínez Head of Research Group Hum337 Becquer Hum337’s Becquer Hum337’s Becquer Hum337’s Becquer Hum337’s As head of the research group HUM337: “Arte Plástico, Secuencial, Experimental de Estampación y Nuevas Tecnologías. Theory and Praxis”, and coordinator of the exhibition “Bécquer, a giant and strange hymn”, I must say that behind is the wish to have been able to inaugurate this exhibition during the year 2020, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of Gustavo Adolfo Claudio Domínguez Bastida, Bécquer. I do not think, having stoically overcome the world disgrace COVID’19, that it is worthwhile to delve even deeper into another anteroom of the common malaise. Having overcome this trance, in this 2021, when everything is normalizing, the proposal that was previously devised for the Centro Cultural Convento del Corpus Christi, in El Viso del Alcor, to whom we thank for their welcome, finally takes shape. And we, from the investigation of the graphs, we raise the Poet, today for today with this exhibition, as in 1911 his person was extolled with the “Glorieta de Bécquer” in the Park of Maria Luisa of Seville, interpreting it from his most outstanding works. On this occasion, 33 researchers from our group are participating. The diversity of procedures used manage the graphics from very different technical possibilities, building different graphic-poetic universes at the same time between digital and traditional disciplines. The richness of this exhibition proposal lies in the transgression of matter and its dimensions. The plurality of discourses leads us to a collective message where the concept, customized from the interiorization of the becquerian soul, manages an cadavre exquis of singular monologues that sing a chorus of dramatic compositions, sometimes hopeful, other times sharp and enigmatic, some insultingly significant, critical heritage of the reason of poetry and its Poet: Aznarez presents us with an illustration where spaces and realities compete to intoxicate, even more if possible, with illustrative beauty, the romantic image of a tormented poet. Ballesteros identifies, from the concept, the truth of the passage of time. Barrera triangulates the virginal space of the plane in a locator of melancholy through areas of iconic figures that map our senses. Berrocal shoots us to reason with fantasy. Making truth a character of phantasmagoric unreality, an ideal remake of the aesthetic construction of the romantic hallucinated adrift in his thoughts. 233 floods the visual space with a multitude of rhymed voices. Dysfunction that begins in the silent harmony of the vociferous chromatic spectacle. Wijuasky builds a harem of sinuous vagaries that could, be- 333333
tween form and substance, call us to the labyrinthine thought of the poet. Carrillo retains us in an instant of memory that we have all experienced at some point to live eternally, if we so wish, in the eclipse... that hides the truth by showing silences, and foreshadows the truth of an eternally constant time. Chou focuses a subtle tangled gesture of inconsistent inconstant clouds, as the poet shows us impossible possibilities of a feat. Clarí transfigures gender and reason, time and circumstances. He creates forms without reason, with the reason of forms, those that make the diachronic truth eternal. Climent discovers the paradise of color in branched swarms of chromatic subtleties. Let us search in his vegetal code for the mysteries of the testimony of the words that build the poems. Cumalat segments the flight of melancholy. By interweaving the flight of swallows, he allows us to master the dimension of mourning. Del Río plays an eternal game... theatricalizing life. The hidden and the manifest. By enduring in the inconstant, we ascertain the eternal. De Sousa illustrates Rorschach’s for a psychoanalytical Becquer. Díaz dialogues with the senses in constant reflection with color and form. Expósito magnifies the small ...that from dreams one lives ...and that from what one lives one dreams. Fernández plays with the shadowy shadows of the Platonic concept. Reality or utopia: fiction of truth. GRomo, frame by frame, illustrates the flight of oblivion and the loss of what is desired. Gonzalez floods with pink the essence of love, the one that sleeps waiting. Herrera synthesizes in the abstraction of the perfect the patterned sound of the verses. Jiménez revises the rest of flight. Contrasting composition of stillness in balance. Lobo abstracts reality and, in colors, articulates a chromatic verse of structural tensions. ParaLosQueAmanDemasiado takes us to the infinite sea of stars, those that we count, fleeting, as wishes to be fulfilled. And yet it weighs us down, from the inconsistency of weightlessness, to the subtle persistence of oblivion. Impossible references of knowledge fighting for a dimension where good has nothing to do with good, nor evil with evil, nor love with true love. Martínez wants to show his alter ego. Ora Bécquer. Ora Tie- 343434 polo. Ora confetti of blue in love. Mena structures the space. Planes that deconstruct the structure unfolding the mapped object. Like the poet with words articulating interdimensional spaces. Mendoza creates a puzzle of secrets that need an Ariadne’s thread to decode the beauty of the image and the mystery of the words. Montesinos idealizes the kiss in a graphic where the union is passion with all its intricacies. Dobleo embellishes in chromatic horizons the delicate line that separates a step from the road, a gesture from a fact, a kiss from the beloved. Panadero encapsulates the image in diamond-shaped streets of polymers incommunicado vessels that, from their imprisonment, bleed the message of a forgiveness made manifest. Prieto takes us to the beginning, as if nothing, where everything is possible, when the idea is gestated. That look that searches for a secret. That silence that listens to concerts. That word that leads to a poem... Romero empowers women in essence. She exalts, as the poet exalts the word in order to find in the image the value of a hieroglyphic dilemma. Sanchez represents inspiration among earthy characters and elegant silver grays. Silva speaks of love, jealousy, passion and madness. All the ingredients of a romantic poem with which to build his graph. Vargas idealizes the homage to the poet: free and perpetual. This is the legacy that the collective of artists that make up this exhibition have wanted to leave to commemorate the figure of the poet, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, and thus show a graphic heritage produced for the occasion. As curator of the exhibition is a pleasure to be able to show the quality of these works in El Viso del Alcor, and is reiterated thanks to his Excellency City Council for having welcomed and supported us to disseminate this proposal. 353535
Me cuesta trabajo saber qué cosas he soñado y cuáles me han sucedido.
The intertextual skin The intertextual skin The intertextual skin The intertextual skin Tirso Priscilo Vallecillos Writer The intertextual skin The intertextual skin The intertextual skin The intertextual skin The intertextual skin The story I am about to tell you is real, almost in its entirety, I believe, I hope, I trust... It is also true that everything depends on what we understand by reality, on how real we consider ourselves to be. I don’t know if you have ever wondered which part of our lives is real and which belongs to the indeterminate space of what we consider “the inexplicable”. Or uncontrollable, like dreams, do they not occupy an intermediate point between both options? And what about memories? And what about that sediment of culture, those nests attached to our existential buildings, which become part of it, in a kind of skin that we can never get rid of? The point is that in the story I am about to tell you I came to feel very important, even if it only happened for a short time, for two very different and unrelated reasons. Once again, my life flowed on the borders of the lives of others, in a place closer to fiction than to reality. It all started at Edita Punta Umbria, if I remember correctly, in May 2018. Baile del sol was going to be honored for its 25 years of trajectory. While we were eating, Tito Expósito, editor and friend, to whom the rumor of a public enclosure at the hands of its main authors had reached, asked me to replace him when it came to respond with a few words before the audience; known to all is his scant interest, almost rejection, for this type of interventions. Absolute freedom, I asked him in return. Those of us who are not actors need total freedom to be able to make a fictional intervention that is credible: verisimilitude is a building that rests on a powerful structure that runs the risk of collapsing at the slightest stiffening of the face or break in the voice, things that happen when you do not master the dramatic technique or the text, and at that stage of the day I could not memorize his data, nor emulate his Canarian accent; I wanted to do something natural and I thought that I could only fool the audience if I created my own story. It is not the first time that I impersonate someone else and, now that I think about it, one of these days I should analyze why people propose these things to me and why I accept them so naturally. It also brings me back to what I have already said. What part of the reality of others belongs to me so that these things can happen? The point is that at mid-afternoon we were taking refuge in the darkness of the last rows of the Teatro del Mar and between the shots of light that escaped from the projection of an ad hoc video, Tito and I (note the similarity of our names, parallel to the physical resemblance that readers are unaware of) exchanged our sweatshirts and, in addition, I put on the characteristic cap that my friend usually wears. I discreetly left through the back door and made my way, through the access that is behind the bathrooms, to the passageways that lead to the stage. Just in 434343
this way I met the gaze of that stranger, the only person who at that moment was outside, a gaze that in one fell swoop destabilized my life as the broom does with the nest. Before entering the darkness I turned to receive the smile of that one who, shaken by a current of air, seemed to me a vaporous and incorporeal being typical of any legend of Bécquer, reason for which also escaped me another smile conscious of the influence of a project work that I had just finished with my students and that revolved around the Sevillian author. His face seemed familiar to me; in fact, almost immediately, I was certain that I had dreamed it, which is the conclusion I reach when someone is familiar to me, since I never forget a face. Yet another example of this confusion in which our existence is bathed. I peeked through the curtains and saw, as I had been informed, that the authors most committed to the publishing house would go up on stage to read some text, before the editor, that is, Tito, incarnated in me, asked me to say a few words. When they finished and the editor’s name began to sound in their mouths, I slipped through the curtains and made my way among those who, surprised, saw me pass by. But who is this? asked one of them in a low voice, but sharp as a saber. It was at that moment, just at that moment, that I was about to be buried under the rubble of a reality that did not support itself. I greeted without raising my head, a detail that coincided with the shy nature of my friend, but in a matter of two or three seconds the whole story I had prepared: that of my arrival to the Canary Islands by ship, my first jobs as a waiter in the port, my contract as a gardener in the monastery of the Pious Fathers, those who almost adopted me and who also gave me an education, those who instilled in me the love for books... All that story that during the meal had made my friend laugh, I don’t know, at that moment it seemed so implausible. .. That “But who is this?” had acted as a solvent on the painting of reality that I had begun to capture on that stage. And this made me wonder much later, how the vision of others influences our own reality. But let’s go back to that moment, on the stage, to the moment when I saw that woman again, standing by the door. I interrupted my words to invite her to sit down, perhaps interpreted as a courtship call, but launched in the hope of gaining a few seconds and thus being able to reformulate my ill-fated speech. She advanced down the aisle to the front row, seeming to move without touching the floor. I smiled at her and, again, I remembered Bécquer. Then I turned my words around to focus on my activity as a publisher: “The life of the editor is not like the life of the bird that spends its life singing and receives its sustenance from God. We feed ourselves... Anyway, I am not going 444444 to tell here what we all already know, but to talk about this other kind of nourishment... about what I feel now.... We know that the greatest ideas become smaller when they are enclosed in the iron circle of the word. The editor picks them up and offers them to readers so they can make them great again.” The woman seemed to be taking notes in a notebook while through my mind, from remote and shadowy places, ideas insinuated themselves for me to clothe in words. I remembered the Symphonic Introduction, I had used it to accompany a video recorded in the classroom, I learned it by heart with the intention of being as natural as possible. I have already said that the slightest hesitation makes the most solid of buildings crumble and there is nothing like the words of others to shore up one’s own text. “Every literary text is a redoubt of fictionality, between the world of the idea and the world of form there is an abyss that can only be bridged by words (...) I wish to occupy myself a little with the world that surrounds me, being able, once empty, to take my eyes off this other world that I carry inside my head. Common sense, which is the barrier of dreams, begins to waver, and people from different fields get mixed up and confused. I find it hard to know which things I have dreamed and which have happened to me. My affections are divided between ghosts of imagination and real characters. My memory classifies, jumbled, names and dates of women and days that have died or have passed, with the days and women that have only existed in my mind. In short, the catalog of my modest publishing house is nothing more than...” And it was at that precise moment when I was really aware of the incoherence of my words, perhaps in accordance with the reality I was representing, and then I remembered an aspiring model who failed to get into a reality show, one of those images that stick in your mind when you glance at a screen while having a coffee at the bar or buying a household appliance, and I suddenly shut up and imitated that scene: I held with my hand (pinching with my thumb and forefinger the space between my eyebrows) my head, which was shaking slowly turning to both sides. ... and then I received a loud ovation from the audience that, fortunately, ended my intervention. When I turned around, I was finally able to look at the faces of some of the authors who confirmed with their smiles that they knew what had happened there. I must have done well because my friend Jaio, also an editor, who was in the stalls, later confessed to me that she had not realized the game of identities she had attended. As I left the stage through the same place I had entered, I met the stranger again, she seemed to be waiting for me. Migrating glances nestled who knows what pretentious definite desires to end the seasonality of my feelings. I let her approach. As she 454545
spoke to me her eyes flew over every feature of my face, she seemed to hunt them on the fly: now my chin, now my eyebrows, now she went into my mouth and came out with the corners of her lips brimming with my fresh saliva. She told me she was a writer, that she had a manuscript I might be interested in, that it fit with everything I had been hearing. We walked the way out together, I only remember the gurgle of her voice. My friends were congratulating me for the feat I had accomplished and she did not seem to understand what had happened. It is curious how different realities create different perspectives for understanding, as windows of the same building offer different views. When we left I tried to walk straight and intensify the symmetry of my shoulders. Males who exhibit a greater degree of symmetry get mates more quickly than asymmetrical ones. We had a few wines, but I no longer remember what we were talking about because I felt how, little by little, I was undergoing a change similar to that of a bird changing its plumage. Something I could not control. An internal change, as if his life had settled inside me. For the first time I felt that my existence was in the hands of another person. I realized that every second my own perception of my expectations was changing, now they were not personal, but of my partner, as if she herself had transported me to another reality, as if each of her breaths had tempered the crystals of my gaze. Yes, I could feel her tempering the glass of my eyes with the flick of her eyelashes. And for this reason I took her to the hostel. I asked her to wait for me downstairs and to come up alone minutes later, the family that ran it knew me from other editions of the festival and I did not want to give rise to gossip that would end my immaculate reputation. I ascended like an arrow, I walked around the room trying to tidy it up, just as if I had found the definitive place to install the nest, and after a few minutes I looked out, surprised that he did not come. And there she was: she was walking as if she was going from one side of the street to the other, and she stayed like that for a long time, like a soul serving a sentence; as she confessed with naturalness later, destroying that romantic image, an application forced her to reach ten thousand steps before the end of the day. That, though strange, made me feel optimistic about where she intended to end it. And so it was. We stayed thirteen nights without leaving the hotel. Thirteen days are more than enough time for a pair of swallows to build their nest. Bit by bit of mud, as we do with words. As the amount they carry in their beaks is very limited, it can take more than five thousand trips between the place where they get the mud and the place where they build their nest. Almost as many times as I traveled through their mouth to raise it with their 464646 sighs. Avoiding the silences, winter quarters that secluded me in who knows what hemisphere. I rested the nights attached to the burnt sugar cane fields of my chest. On the last night of the encounter, as we were about to fall asleep in each other’s arms, he said good night to me, as he had done the previous twelve nights, pronouncing my friend’s name. At that moment I felt how his warmth seemed to be able to illuminate the rest of my life and I decided to tell him that I was not Tito Expósito, to reveal my true identity, to reject the temptation to create other realities and to keep my own. I did it without giving her much importance, she didn’t seem to care, in the middle of the explanation I think she fell asleep. The next morning, when I woke up, she was gone. I stayed at the hotel for a couple of days in case she came back. I called several of my friends but no one remembered her, not even when I made mention to them of the time when I approached her in the theater to sit down. She was gone, but I still resisted and for several days I stood guard on a terrace in case she came to meet me or by chance returned her to me. Curious this world in which realities play with each other. I order a coffee, light a cigarette. Curiosity pulls my gaze to the facade of the boarding house, just under the roof. A nest hangs in solitude, it seems to harbor only oblivion. And again I think of the people who will not return, those who learned our names, those who managed to forget them; those who like nests we wanted to occupy without knowing they were empty, those who will not return. 474747

Agustín Israel Barrera García The dark swallows will return... This first stanza of one of Becquer’s most popular poems, together with the Portuguese tradition of hanging ceramic swallows at home in honour of those who have disappeared, but who remain in our memory and will come to our window to nest and endorse their presence in our lives with the beat of their wings on the glass. They become the motif of this work, based on the memory, the “souvenir” as an object of consumption and the oral tradition of poetry, resulting in this triangular yet cyclical composition of those memories, of those people who passed through our lives and marked us forever, help us to take flight, with their simple memory and become our reason to keep flying. 656565

Wijuasky José Carmona Pérez Bécquer’s life experiences are mixed with literary resources from his rhymes to shape RAPSODIA, a digital illustration (Adobe Illustrator) full of symbolism that aims to pay tribute to the poet on the 150th anniversary of his death. Based on the oil painting Nymphs and Satyr, by his contemporary William Bouguereau, this work adopts the figure of the woman, of great inspiration for the poet, in the form of a naiad. The repetition of these is only one of the many resources used to bring to the work one of the most used and characteristic literary figures of Bécquer: the anaphora. After an exhaustive analysis of Rhymes and Legends, the allegorical game is evident in RAPSODIA: bells, architecture, lilies, swallows, music, sparrows, nature, mythology, purple, simplicity, naiads, tradition... and Seville. 777777

Guillermo Carrillo Ayala December 22th, 1870. The poet dies. The cosmos reacts in the form of a total eclipse of the Sun that was photographed from several points in the province of Cádiz. There is a description about de phenomenon, collected by the Diario de Cádiz from the Boletín de Comercio, 1870, XXXIII, n. 302 (starlight.inaf.it). Although the text pretends to be a scientific description, is a very poetic text. That poetic way, coinciding with the death of the poet, inspires the picture.

A desire for something that was and will no longer be, a hope that ignites but is shattered because you already know what is going to happen. Life is a continuous “go and come back of the shallows”. On this occasion the shallows left with a tragic ending: Two lovers who have split and who can meet again, but he knows perfectly that they won’t never be the same. Not everything should have a sad ending. In this proposal, through ambiguity, the various possibilities that can occur are reflected. They are shallows that are coming back, shallows that are leaving. It is not possible to determine what they are doing, if they returned to stay or to leave later, if they left and have already returned or perhaps they never left and are waiting. 979797

Eduarda de Sousa Coutinho I start with the repetition of the image using stencil / collage techniques, whose concepts can be concatenated in the feeling of nature. The shapes are similar, but not the same. We got used to feeling the homogeneity / analogy of forms in nature. As Wiccius Wong tells us, forms in nature can be analogous without being the same. Similarity aspects can be easily found in nature. The leaves of a tree, the trees in a forest, the grains of sand on a beach, the waves of the ocean are examples of this. Also, the black used as a binder implies the assemblage of fragments offering a compact element. This analogy and the sense of agglutination strengthen the image of this work in a formation of unity, accentuating what I want to communicate visually and graphically, feeling an illustration of Rima III. María Teresa Díaz Sáinz Fascinating, it elevates to the heavens, and also leaves on the edge of the precipice of a dark abyss, bringing out that macabre part that wants to rummage through the garbage, like the meanders of a vital river that runs through the boat of intimacy. It is the yin and the yang, the pure and the dirty, the sublime, which separates from the body, and the crude, the lowest and most filthy, which traps in the most nauseating entrails. The life of an impeccable bourgeois, sublime poet, and a lover and obscene artist, in the purest “chungo” shunga style. Romantic death of tuberculosis, seasoned with syphilis, extreme duality. As in the curve of an infinite asymptote, it approaches the cheesy, but without touching it. That ecstasy, in which before letting go of everything and letting fly, leaves without air, like an eternal death rattle prior to a death that does not come. Bécquer manages to freeze that moment, making it infinitely intimate and pornographic, letting feelings of recurrent onanist flow, escaping from the daily “reality”. For what is to be lived, it is preferable to dream. 109109109

Rocío Expósito Cano We can’t condensed into a single image the way to go to the things that Bécquer wants to show us. A path where we can encounter with thousand things: Bécquer and all of our things. It seems that this happens to us with poetry, with paint, with each artistic object. We see something recognizable or related with us that we can understand, or not, and so we pay more attention. That’s why those artistic objects take us out from the place we are, like it or not. A few images, those that he has created with words in our minds and remain in it: arrow, pupil, flame, waves that curl with the wind, our own existence, mixed impressions taken as one thing. A couple of pillows with modern style, something simple and kind, the cloth on where we place our heads in search of the necessary rest, there are the lingering impressions about Bécquer’s being. Time and experience, love and death take us to understand how gigantic is his work. So giant that we can’t condensed into a single image everything that he has left for us. We must keep walking by this wonderful and alive path that never ends. 113113113

Natalia Herrera Pombero Cuatro Rimas gathers, in its abstraction, the musicality that accompanies Bécquer’s poetry, within a whole investigation that relates sound and graphics. The work seeks the parallelism of the intonation and the cadence of the poetic oratory with the graphics of the records of an old music box. Thus, each line occupies the space of a word within a selection of four rhymes of the poet, composing by itself the sound that would correspond to it in the mechanism of the music box. Making an exercise of imagination, wouldn’t it be nice to get lost in the chords that would sound when reproducing the poetry of Bécquer? The music inherent in his rhymes? Time is marked by the chance of the unwanted desiring a new delicacy. That love that before feeling bad is, out of charity, eliminated... That love that, before feeling bad, is, out of charity, eliminated... That love that, out of charity, is eliminated. 5.- That love that, of so much subjecting to judgment the feelings, lets pass the eternal truth that says search, compare, and if you find something better... always waiting for the perfect idealization, discarding the beautiful fickle that could become, although they seem to croak, in the best of the princes... with that blue prince that sells the best stories told by lovers who expect to love... That love with Penelope’s soul... That love with the soul of Penelope... That 6.- That love that promotes the selfish disorder falsely legislated in a monomaniacal heart. That ego pregnant with mischievous audacity. That flower of desire weighed down by the past... Mirroring lies, and disguising picturesque tales of mournful litanies, it hopes to heal from the weeping that does not cease, taking what innocence weaves between two desperate hearts as the elixir of life. That love dead in life...

Neiva Montesinos Redruello This illustration is based on the rhyme XXIV, by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, my mother showed me that poem when I was a child and followed me all this time, becoming my favorite poem of the author. In the work, an attempt has been made to represent all the symbology of the poem as a whole, showing how that kiss that it describes would feel. Alicia Dobleo Alicia Ortiz Ortiz We, the artists, are connected by the same need to create. We aim to satisfy the inescapable demand of our souls that wishes to project and materialize outside ourselves. Sometimes, a feeling, an emotion, or a thought, can bring together the work of different creators. As if they were musicians, who sing the same melody played on different instruments. VIII. Golden fog horizon. Time does not exist in this communion, it flattens out, it becomes complicit. And the work survives as long as someone listens to it, as long as someone looks at it and dreams maybe about their own tune. 163163163

José Luis Panadero Albuquerque In the 9 personal letters that make up the little book “Letters from my cell”, written in 1864 during his retreat in the Monastery of Veruela, under the Moncayo mountain, where Bécquer went to recover from tuberculosis and consumption, diseases that showed him the closeness of death, he records on the one hand his experiences during confinement or in his walks around, and on the other hand his feelings and emotions that lead him from dreams of glory, to the desire for total annihilation and finally to a resigned conformity. The rich inner world of G.A. Bécquer in these intense moments of his life would be a very pretentious challenge to tackle in a single pictorial work, so I have focused this work, in a paragraph of the first letter in which he describes the feelings and tribulations that invade him during his long vigils in “Those early morning hours ...” in which he begins to forge the next day with a clarity still uncertain. Those hours that must have more minutes than the others. Hours that are dangerous, slow and loaded with strange thoughts. Hours when everything is seen as through a blue veil, as when the head is disturbed by alcoholic vapours. Hours against which it is impossible to defend oneself and escape. Hours that are both a prison and a refuge. 167167167

María de la Cruz Prieto Pérez Where do we come from? What was the beginning of the universe? Is there afterlife? These are some of the questions that humans have yearned to know since they existed as thinking beings. Art is an excellent medium of research, investigation and expression to find answers to these questions and artists of all eras have worked about the meaning of life. Science offers us precision about the world around us, Religion gives us hope about all that we do not know, but Art has the infinite power to create it. 171171171
