Our journal, “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura”, founded in 2010, is an initiative of the Research Group HUM–632 of the University of Seville and its objective is the sharing and debating of research within architecture. This six–monthly scientific publication, in paper and digital format, publishes original works that have not been previously published in other journals. The article selection process consists of a double blind system involving two external reviewers, following the usual protocols for serial scientific publications. The titles, summaries and key words of articles are also published in English. “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura” presents a clear, easy and flexible structure. It deals with all the subjects relating to the theory and the practise of the architectural project. The different “open themes” that compose our editorial line are sources for the conjunction of diverse investigations. The journal is directed toward architects, students, researchers and professionals related to the planning and the accomplishment of the architectural work. EXTERNAL ANONYMOUS PEER REVIEW. When the Editorial Board of the magazine has verified that the article fulfils the standards relating to style and content indicated in the instructions for authors, the article will be sent to two anonymous experts, within the specific field of architectural investigation and critique, for a double blind review. The Director of the magazine will communicate the result of the reviewers’ evaluations, and their recommendations, to the authors by electronic mail, to the address used to send the article. The Director will communicate the result of the review (publication without changes; publication with minor corrections; publication with significant corrections; its publication is not advisable), as well as the observations and comments of the reviewers, to the main author,. If the manuscript has been accepted with modifications, the authors will have to resubmit a new version of the article, addressing the requirements and suggestions of the external reviewers. If they wish, the authors can also send a letter to the Editorial Board, in which they will indicate the content of the modifications of the article. The articles with significant corrections can be sent to Advisory and/or Scientific Board for verification of the validity of the modifications made by the author. PALABRAS CLAVE Mies; Lilly Reich; Barcelona; Maggi; Pabellón Alemán SUMMARY For Mies van der Rohe, the use of life–sized, or near life–sized, representation rather than solely in models supposed one of the foremost tools of control, research and diffusion in his work. In those planned and overseen by he and Lilly Reich as an official representation of the Weimar Republic in the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition there are clear examples of these relationships and translations at a 1:1 scale; those which the master carried out between his previous project and the work developed for that international exhibition, in the interiors in the period of the installation of the Exhibition, and among designs of the contest and other subsequent ones. This article investigates the translations that occurred in that period. In them, the concept of “model” is a shifting term during their development. These projects, depending on the time of their development, apply solutions tested previously in others, and are converted into models of themselves like workable boards where the pieces are adjusted while in progress and seek their best placement to finish as trials for future experiences, a sort of evolutionary process which produces a more plural and transversal image of Mies than accustomed. KEY WORDS Mies; Lilly Reich; Barcelona; Maggi; German Pavilion Persona de contacto / Corresponding author: [email protected].

Mies used the same outline, possibly pressured by the ridiculous dates of confirmation and execution of this last construction of a new floor plan and its interior exhibition, reinterpreting the space that he first designed for Barcelona with one he would feel more comfortable and used to, The Silk Exhibition 13 . He designed a square space, where the corners again disappeared being the only areas of the four interior wall faces that didn’t have applied graphics at the bottom, nor did they serve as a support for the central models on each side reinforcing this “darkening” through the multitude of color from the mural images, with a clear background in the central areas and full of color at their endpoints. These surfaces were finished in black to emphasize their disappearance from the scene. Through two of these four corners the entrance and exit to the exhibition were formed, achieving a very suggestive effect of appearance and disappearance in the installation. The architect didn’t only delimitate the risk of the hasty proposal with the repetition of a blueprint, he also translated identical measurements from the floor plan of one exhibition to another, increasing only the height of the space, since it wasn’t conditioned for any Pavilion. A clear exercise in the translation of an exhibition space whose function had already been tested for weeks (figure 9a y 9b). * * * This year marks the 30th anniversary of the reconstruction of the German Pavilion. As in other reconstructions of famous 14 Pavilions, it continues to be a 1:1 scale model which tries to represent what the Pavilion was: a posterior model in place of the original. Its reconstruction meant an immense investigative labor by its authors 15 . Thanks to this work we today know that in many aspects it’s not accurate with respect to the first which was much more scenographic than the modular and technological construction that exhibits its reinterpretation, perhaps provoked by the transformation of the image the real life Mies thanks to the representations that were done of his work. Its copy has also allowed us to know the real Pavilion, in a very different way than it had been interpreted until the time of its construction. “The reality of the Pavilion, for me, is completely different than what I had expected after having seen all of those photographs, models and drawings, which demonstrates the insufficiency of our studies” 16 . The Barcelona Mies van der Rohe Foundation announced a contest in February of this year for the thirtieth anniversary. In it, they encouraged the presentation of proposals for the development of a full-scale ephemeral reconstruction of the colonnade that preceded the Miesian construction. New proposals of models at a 1:1 scale would once again be tied to the life of the Pavilion. The proposal of our studio intended to take advantage of the opportunity to invite new spectators to recover the origin of the project as it was intended and reconnect it to the magic fountain, disconnected in its second period of life until the demolition of the INI building. This would compel the new visitors to observe a model of the columns, in our case at a reduced scale, from that initial point of the trajectory from which behind the columns the stunning German construction could be seen. A distant view through a new reduced model of another life-size model. An invitation to discover one of the seeds of the original design, until now left out in the studies of the work (figure 10). In the translations at a 1:1 scale that took place in that period and examined in this writing, the concept of “model” is a changing term. Designs that, depending on the moment of their development, apply solutions tested on others, and are converted into models of themselves in the effect that they are like workable boards where the pieces are adjusted while in progress and seek their best placement to finish as trials of for future experiences. A sort of evolutionary process which produces a more plural and transversal image of Mies than usual. 1. The reconstruction of the Pavilion “corrects” all the constructive alterations that Mies instituted to resolve the different variables of the project, in doing so, losing the details that would allow us to know the priorities of the master when executing those adjustments. This original selection prioritized the issues that represented the essence of the Pavilion. 11. Lambert, Phyllis: Mies in America. Québec: Harry N. Abrams, 2001. 12.
