Manuel Fernando Mancera-Martínez 16 17 The secret walls of a mind banished from reality conspire to protect the paradise of a creative soul. And the special circumstance of a small space of time in the life of an artist is the trigger for everything that shapes his landscape, his map, and even his introspective life. From each idea, a new world. From each way of seeing, a magical princedom where crowns of dethroned ideas can be gathered. And while one’s gaze is lost in a solitary thought, introspection does the rest with the mixture of everything that is seasoned in the unique way of creating, merging bursts of energetic intellectual expertise. Art is not just a game, even though it plays at creating illusions of entertainment for the eyes of others. The artifice of mastery put to work for those who only know how to love from experience makes what is thought take shape among interconnected ideas to scribble, in a journey that connects dots, a strangely unique map: music for thoughts, a secret route of mysterious ideas, images reconstructed to decorate our kaleidoscopic temples. 30 31 ciud a d vivida ciud a d traducida Natalia Herrera-Pombero LIVED CITY TRANSLATED CITY LIVED city. Translated city. It is 8 o’clock in the morning on a typical day in the London summer of 2025. Looking out of the window is like trying to predict the weather through a glass barrier that does not allow the temperature to pass through. The weather forecast available on the internet is not the most reliable either. Each one has its own opinion and none of them take into account the windchill factor, the oppressive heat of the deepest underground lines, the possible crowds at rush hour or the places where buildings let in draughts that make your whole body shiver. When in doubt, stick to the routine: several thin layers of light, comfortable fabrics that are easy to store in your rucksack if they become a nuisance. It could be Sunday. In that case, a nearby route full of life might be Broadway Market, passing by Columbia Road Flower Market and ending up at Brick Lane Market. Or maybe not, maybe it’s Saturday and it could be the perfect day to discover every magical corner of Greenwich, cross the Thames via the pedestrian tunnel and end up watching the sunset reflected in the canals of Canary Wharf. Friday afternoon? Easy. After lunch in the common room at the Warburg Institute, it could be the ideal time to visit the art galleries in Fitzrovia. Or maybe not. Perhaps it’s a day to clear your mind and soak up the subculture of Camden Market, drink a coffee on a colourful terrace with live music in the background, and then stroll up Regents Canal to Little Venice. Let your body dance to the beat of the party boats, or sway thoughtlessly like the narrowboats gliding through the waters between the houseboats on both banks. Plans aside, it is time to leave, at least, the four walls that have come to be considered a secondary home in these months of displacement. Far, far away from the kites, the rockroses, the griffon vultures and the holm oak and cork oak charcoal burners. Here, it is the seagulls that rock the sunsets. The crows fly over this sky, which sometimes offers sunsets capable of teleporting the mind to a native pasture. The ambulance sirens form the daily anthem that is difficult to disconnect from. In the backpack, apart from the essentials, there is always a voice recorder, a piece of plasticine stored in a small bag, some strips of handmade paper, neatly cut and prepared, stored in another piece of plastic in case it starts to rain, a blue ink pad and a packet of wipes. Because yes, it is inevitable that the hands will end up covered in elusive ultramarine. That’s it, nothing else is needed to begin a new day of tireless search for synaesthetic identity. The graphic and sound identity of a city experienced over time, discovered in sips, apprehended between walks. Just stepping outside the residence is like entering a utopia of spicy aromas only available in this corner of the city known as Whitechapel. One in every two buildings has a restaurant or takeaway on the ground floor, and the neon signs advertising opening hours and the delicacies on offer brighten up even the greyest of mornings as you walk briskly to the nearest underground station. An inevitable daily routine. Almost familiar faces. Whether here or anywhere else in this English city, sight alone is certainly not enough; smell and hearing are the primary cartographers, accompanied by touch and sometimes taste. A mosaic of scents and sounds, flavours and textures, as anarchic as it is rhythmic: the backdrop to this search for synesthetic experience through artistic and experiential practice. A city that is not only seen, but inhaled and heard, tasted and caressed, with a lucid and alert consciousness in all its splendour. The cries of street vendors outside the underground and overground station doors wake even the sleepiest of souls, while the gaze inevitably falls upon the defining traces of daily activity. Those small squares that carve into the concrete floor as if they were a textile pattern. The power of repetition. The tireless strength of entrepreneurial spirits who rest only on the sacred Sunday. Could there be a more fitting graphic definition for this neighbourhood? Mind, senses and soul come together at the perfect time and place to define the first point on the map of an urban identity ready to serve as an example, a guide, a cornerstone. Half a minute of sound is captured: an immortalised moment, random yet decisive. Before the screech of brakes, those voices trying to sell vegetables, fish, clothes or delicious sweets almost at the doors of a hospital; a hospital that adds its own punctual notes with its constantly passing ambulances or its helicopter entering or leaving the helipad. Among the crowd: an artist trying to go unnoticed so as not to attract strange looks, half crouched between the market stalls, trying to find the best texture that identifies the place, searching for the best-positioned small squares with the greatest visual vividness, capable of immediately transporting the memory back to that place. Plasticine makes its appearance, an agent of memory, a sensitive mass capable of stealing the very skin of London to create the urban fossilisation of a moment, of a tiny surface area of the place. Thus, on its own, ephemeral and delicate, malleable and plastic, at the mercy of hands that try not to alter what has been collected, this mass already contains within itself a large part of the identity of an entire city. All that is needed is the action of ink on it and its transfer to one of the strips of paper for the instantaneity of the ephemeral material to become a map of permanent scars. The ink, through its action, helps to reveal the eminently graphic nature of the three-dimensionality of the texture, revealing what at first glance might go unnoticed as a trace: the possibility of a simple piece of soil, the majesty of the pores of concrete, the sensitivity of a blade of grass that might have invaded the pavement. It is undoubtedly paradoxical to think that the essence of the stone material that forms the structure of a building, the wood of a pub’s beams, or the pebbles that make up a footpath, originally designed for permanence and resistance, could be stolen by something as fleeting as the plasticine that can travel in a passer-by’s rucksack. Concrete, a silent witness to the course of time, condemned to erosion, to visual oblivion imposed by custom. Wood, doomed to rot, wear and tear, splintering, drying out or burning. Essential truths revealed as surfaces that, far from being smooth, appear as absolute battlefields full of scratches, cracks and urban micro-reliefs, in the brief moment of pressure from the plasticine on them. A voice of the supposedly eternal granted through the most sober and ephemeral material. And so, the texture of the concrete in a brutalist building becomes its most defining feature, or an entire industrial neighbourhood becomes defined by the regularity of its exposed brickwork. Thus, a park can be summed up by the chaos of its fine blades of grass where Londoners stop to rest, eat or socialise whenever a ray of sunshine peeks through the clouds. Thus... Thus, a tile could be what awakens in the mind the memory of an entire underground transport network. Every walk, a discovery. Every outing, a detective-like search for the characteristic features of each urban landscape. Every neighbourhood, its own script. Every place, its own drawing. All unified by belonging to the same city, by having been collected using the same mouldable mass, by having been coloured with the same ink, by being stamped on the same paper. A uniformity common to absolute variety and eclecticism. Once back within the four walls, a different kind of magic takes hold. A ritual marked by a single protagonist, the red dot. In a display of choice and codification of each of the urban graphics collected, based on purely subjective decisions, a conversation takes place between the drawing and the artist. Tracing paper is placed between the handmade paper on which the graphic texture of each place was deposited and the attentive gaze. On it, little by little, a series of dots are deposited that respond to the voids, to the marks that suddenly catch the eye, to the spaces that in themselves are postulated as predominant. And gradually, the graphic score is fixed in bleeding scarlet on the textured blue of the lower imprint. A musical constellation composed of what the graphics themselves sing, an allegory to their native texture, a hymn to a future enhanced and returned to the city. A secret language that, almost alchemically, transforms what was tactile into a small visual identity capable of evolving, in turn, towards musical capacity. Archaeology of touch evolved into a new graphic-sound memory that overlaps with an identity created throughout history like an authentic palimpsest. In order to achieve the sound evolution described here, new materials associated with the post-production of such a symbiotic project are required. A drill and a music box, a machine that will convert the graphic constellation into a sound loop characteristic of each recorded location. Half a minute of infinite music, superimposed on the unique and unrepeatable transience of the initial sound recording of the environment. Ambient sound returned to the city with one more ingredient: a graphic-visual-sound counterpoint distilled from the specific and subjective contemplation of a single person experiencing the place. The initial innocence of contact, plasticine, a democratic medium that equalises the graphic textures of each neighbourhood, breaking down the hierarchies between them and unifying the visual result. The abstraction of the architecture of the point as the minimal element of a new vibrational alphabet that gives the script a new sonic intentionality. The resurrection of the musical soul of the graphic, freed from its initially inert texture, a potential song capable of being sung by every surface of the city. Three-dimensional sonority developed by the beating heart of a music box that magically takes the drawing to breathe life into it and turn it into something much more than it already is. 44 45 Así, un viaje de los sentidos. Thus, a journey of the senses. Thus, the ability to be present. The potential to “ notice”. Thus, a city experienced. Thus, a city translated synesthetically. Thus, a city portrayed. Thus, London: Graphic-Sound Identity. An invitation to the visitor. To the spectator. To the living being, conscious of the beauty of all reality that surrounds the soul seeking the magic of the present. To every human with the soul of an artist, capable of seeing beyond what first meets the eye. 4746 LONDON: The project. Graphic-Sound Identity. LONDON : THE PROJECT. GRAPHIC-SOUND IDENTITY. 48 4948 London: Graphic-sound identity is, like its predecessor Porto: Identidade gráfico-sonora – developed in the city of Porto (Portugal) in the last quarter of 2023 –, the result of an artistic research project that seeks to amplify the possibilities of artistic synaesthesia, fundamentally between the graphic and sound disciplines, in an attempt to capture urban identity from a transversal and innovative perspective. In this case, the research is approached from several angles, resulting in a set of works that respond to the moment, the place and the presence through the immediate visual imprint and the fossilised sound through the dot. Based on the musicality of this elementary graphic element, as well as the possibility of converting any graphic medium into a point (and, from there, into melody), this set of works seeks to capture the ephemeral nature of a specific moment and place in London’s urban geography through graphics, to be returned to the city, in some way, as a new element of musical identity. The materialisation is as simple experientially as it is complex ideally. Production: a piece of plasticine, an ink pad, some strips of paper and a sound recorder. Post-production... a conversation between graphology and artist, a dot drawing, a hole punch and a music box. And thus, a whole. Thus, London: Graphic-sound identity . Presented as a synaesthetic and interdisciplinary result in which graphics and sounds – captured and produced – are shown as an indivisible entity, allowing the viewer or reader to immerse themselves in the living experience of the English city. 62 63 17/07/25 NATIONAL THEATRE 64 65 66 67 19/07/25 BRICK LANE 68 69 70 71 20/07/25 COLUMBIA ROAD 72 73 74 75 20/07/25 WHITE CHAPEL 76 77 78 79 25/07/25 WAXY O’CONNOR’S 80 81 94 95 27/07/25 BUCKING HAM PALACE 96 97 98 99 27/07/25 TOWER BRIDGE 100 101 102 103 28/07/25 GARDEN AT 120 104 105 106 107 28/07/25 LEAVES DEN 108 109 110 111 02/08/25 SAATCHI GALLERY 112 113 126 127 06/08/25 CAMDEN PASSAGE 128 129 130 131 06/08/25 COAL DROPS YARD 132 133 134 135 08/08/25 SOMERSET HOUSE 136 137 138 139 08/08/25 LINCOLN’S INN FIELDS 140 141 142 143 08/08/25 ARTIST’S GARDEN 144 145 158 159 11/08/25 ST KATHARINE DOCKS 160 161 162 163 11/08/25 SOUTH WARK CATHEDRAL 164 165 166 167 12/08/25 THAMES BARRIER 168 169 170 171 12/08/25 GREEN WICH PENINSULA 172 173 174 175 Graph_Acs; Una estancia, una vivencia, una identidad.
