Our journal, “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura”, founded in 2010, is an initiative of the Research Group HUM–632 of the University of Seville and its objective is the sharing and debating of research within architecture. This six–monthly scientific publication, in paper and digital format, publishes original works that have not been previously published in other journals. The article selection process consists of a double blind system involving two external reviewers, following the usual protocols for serial scientific publications. The titles, summaries and key words of articles are also published in English. “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura” presents a clear, easy and flexible structure. It deals with all the subjects relating to the theory and the practise of the architectural project. The different “open themes” that compose our editorial line are sources for the conjunction of diverse investigations. The journal is directed toward architects, students, researchers and professionals related to the planning and the accomplishment of the architectural work. EXTERNAL ANONYMOUS PEER REVIEW. When the Editorial Board of the magazine has verified that the article fulfils the standards relating to style and content indicated in the instructions for authors, the article will be sent to two anonymous experts, within the specific field of architectural investigation and critique, for a double blind review. The Director of the magazine will communicate the result of the reviewers’ evaluations, and their recommendations, to the authors by electronic mail, to the address used to send the article. The Director will communicate the result of the review (publication without changes; publication with minor corrections; publication with significant corrections; its publication is not advisable), as well as the observations and comments of the reviewers, to the main author,. If the manuscript has been accepted with modifications, the authors will have to resubmit a new version of the article, addressing the requirements and suggestions of the external reviewers. If they wish, the authors can also send a letter to the Editorial Board, in which they will indicate the content of the modifications of the article. The articles with significant corrections can be sent to Advisory and/or Scientific Board for verification of the validity of the modifications made by the author. CONRAD, Joseph. The shadow–line. [1917] London: PenguinBooks, 1986. 2.CASTILLA DEL PINO, Carlos. El delirio, un error necesario. Oviedo: Ediciones Nobel, 1998. p. 34. PALABRAS CLAVE Lebbeus Woods; delirio; anomia arquitectónica; marginalidad; anarquitectura; Pabellón de Luz en Chengdu SUMMARY The article offers a critical perspective of the work of Lebbeus Woods (1940, Lansing, Michigan - 2012, New York), from the argument of the concept of delirium. This approach, in parallel to that of the postmodern deregulation of the discipline, shows contemporary architecture itself as a delirious subject and a divergent conduct in Woods, derived from an anomie greater than that which is so extensive in contemporary architectural practice. In order to understand the marginality of this heterodox architect, his context of origin and basic biographical data are outlined, periodising the career of his expansive creativity, in which the concept of Anarchitecture was central. It is shown how he went beyond the limits, close to delirium, in the extent and great intensity of his work, persisting in fantasist experimentation and in his refusal to build. This he maintained throughout his life, operating outside the system of building codes and policies, well beyond a time when this was considered distinguished. Even though his thinking was neoliberal, Woods served in the margins of Capitalism until he built his only structure. He was invited by Steven Holl, in 2007, to design the Light Pavilion in the Sliced Porosity Block, an enormous multifunctional complex in Chengdu (China). The Pavilion, finished one week before his death, condenses the evolution of Woods’ ideology. The analysis of this project serves as a final conclusion. Holl invited Woods to design one of them, for which he made himself immediately available, promptly drawing the first ideas59 (Figure 10). Holl and Ai Weiwei would design the History and Du Fu Pavilions, respectively. Holl had already designed formally independent pieces, configured as heterogeneous architectural events, in ensembles such as that of Makuhari (1992-96, Tokyo), or within volumes, such as that of the concourse of the Health and Biomedical Sciences building of the University of Houston (1996), or the Simmons Hall students residence of the MIT (1998-2002), by means unrelated to the ordered geometry of the building into which they were inserted. His projects, linked to the concept of porosity, preceded the Linked Hybrid complex of Beijing (2009), in turn a benchmark for that of Chengdu. The intersection of non-homogeneous entities in conflict with orderly geometric forms, in a regular/ irregular, dynamic/static dialectic, by means of intrusive objects, cuts, ruptures and insertions, and their Free Spaces, libertarian voids that invaded parts of the host object establishing new connections between their interior spaces, were already in the Anarchitecture that Matta-Clark could have inspired in Woods, as metaphors of the collapse of the established order materialized in images of physical collapse. Woods would have enjoyed the change of title that the citizens of Chengdu gave the pavilion, calling it Time-Light, Shi Guâng60, an expression that recalls his affection for Einsteinian theories. Without light there is no time: time is only understood by measuring light in space. For Woods, “forms make light visible […] a sublime substance. […] Space itself is a complex interacting sea of waves […], alive with energy. […] tectonic structuring of space is achieved by the definition of physical lines, or contours, or vectors, which have been liberated from being merely the boundaries of forms in order to become an active fabric of space [...] which embody the energy, physical, cognitive, affective, […] After forms […] comes architecture”61. An enormous amount of steel constructs an apparently weightless assembly (Figure 11)62. High precision profiles, lined with translucent polycarbonate and covered by linear LEDs, embody the lines drawn by Woods in his first sketches. As in a sacred shrine, floor, walls and ceiling of the niche, are lined with reflective surfaces, amplifying the interior space, as if the building that houses it was a void in which the broken columns are indefinitely prolonged. Woods densifies the space by introducing a second order of finer-gauge steel lines that score the pavilion, anchor the cantilevered columns and support the walkways. In a masterly display of precision perspective, they are given a thickness equivalent to the lines of the opposite facade reflected in the mirror, making the plaza play its part in the whole. The Chengdu work represents a change of scale of the installations that Woods designed in his last stage. A first interpretation would be to simply imagine it as an implosion/explosion within the vacant niche, not by an exterior intervention, with the deformed remains of the exoskeleton in a fixed photograph of the moment of the collapse. Only this would remain of the parasitic or prosthetic architecture of the projects of his second stage, no longer as a scab or scar, but as an open wound, a sventramento through which the Holl building seems to disgorge the light accumulated during the day. The pavilion behaves as a clepsydra, but of light, natural as much as artificial, registering the passage of time, changing colour throughout the day, and underlining the local celebrations. Morris rightly interprets that the pavilion acts as a chromatic chronograph and calendar, converting the building where it nests, into a clock tower. Its frontal view, like a gnomon, precedes the interior space, where the passers-by, who travel along the narrow stairs and passages, transform into phantasmagorical mechanical figures of a carillon63. Little interested in the romantic idea of ruin, Woods’ architectures were ambiguous about whether something was being demolished or built. In the pavilion, such ambiguity declines. It is worth asking here not so much what was still present in his ideology, but what he relinquished to achieve his ends, because, finally, the fact of building leads to “a correction [that] is a conversion”64, a cure that involves a certain renouncement of the person that was. Both the final result and the process followed from the first sketches, to the decisions at work, make the pavilion an extraordinarily effective condenser of the ideas and career of Woods, who invoked with this opportunity, the chance to transcend, like Einstein in his cenotaph propelled by the ray of perpetual light. Woods initially considered the possibility that the theme of the pavilion was high technology, which he never defined, “because what is high-tech today will be old hat tomorrow”, finally evolving towards that of the light “because light will be night in perpetuity. Light is a universal quality that will have meaning further down the road”65. There are no longer evocative texts of his monotheme, no delirious text with which the artist sabotages the multiple interpretations of his representations, simplifying or concealing them. Only the title changes, from Technological Knot to Light Pavilion, without the project changing its development one iota: The drawings and models started for one, are the same that serve to produce the final project with the other; the entries in the blog, descriptive of the development of the project and the work66, mere courtesy; memories of previous works, residues; the words that surround the project, superfluous. With the conversion/cure, evolved from the fact of building, the architecture and its representation are presented without hermeneutical demands. It is the title, not a narrative, which generates interpretations about meanings, the machinations of appreciative language make strenuous virtual meanings of that which is not explicit, even being surprisingly inventive about it. In any event, are the sentences that state having discovered the keys of the representation, if not the content made patent by the representation, sustainable? Let us concentrate on the verifiable, on the space in which the artist thinks, where he must construct in reality, the locus of the work (Figure 12). Holl and Woods get it right in the tactical choice of a gap in the facade of the building. However, the differential feature, hardly trivial, that Woods assumed, is that it was a regular gap, generated ad hoc in a new building, whose structure was prepared for intrusion, is not even an apparently accidental break. This was the key decision that initiated the project and it was its redefinitions that modified it. The Pavilion is not a mere ornamental appliqué. The definitive proportion of the gap, half vertical cube, is that of Earthwave (Figure 13), but its size is more than double, the outer face measures just over 14 metres on the side and half that in depth. However, now, the rear curtain wall doubles the space completing the cube, while the floor, roof and sides reflect the interior faces, multiplying them to infinity (Figure 14). Thus, confined behind the cage of the exoskeleton that constructs the reticulated façade of the building, the pavilion unfolds, virtually acquiring a configuration whose scheme corresponds to the four crossed blocks which, united by their edges, formed that empty square section through which the ray of light was threaded into the empty tomb of Einstein. The last parenthesis closes and the spirit of Woods remains in a cenotaph like the one that he imagined after (re) starting his career in 1976 (Figure 15). 1. CONRAD, Joseph. The shadow-line.
