‘The Discoverer’ [Revista y memoria del proyecto]

Cros Bejar, Mª Teresa

Abstract

While tourists may flock to Cairo for the neighboring pyramids, it’s the chaotic modern city that captures their hearts. On the one hand, Cairo is ancient and humbling, but on the other, it’s contemporary and hectic. Between the ancient mosques and modern city streets, discover the city that has enchanted visitors for thousands of years. WHAT TO VISIT Old Timer Cairo has been around since around 900 CE, so you can imagine, there’s a lot to see. Outside the pyramid complex in Giza, the best historic sites can be found in Old Islamic Cairo. Admire the graceful architecture of every hammam, souk, an mosque in the ancient quarter. Spend the whole day exploring sites like the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, Sultan Hassan Mosque, and the Cairo Citadel. When the sun goes down, stroll down Moez street, pausing in cramped cafes or just admiring the city lights. The Greater Cairo area covers over 1000 sq. km., and has a population of around 20 million, making it the largest urban area in Africa. Llegar allí I’ve Got Whozits and Whatzits Galore With narrow alleys piled high with baubles, and noisy people bargaining in front of every store, Khan el-Khalili is where the action is. This sprawling market has everything from precious stones to essential oils to kitschy tourist trinkets. Discoverer Fernando recommends stopping by El Fishawy, the oldest cafe in Cairo where you can sip sweet mint tea and take a break from the chaotic souq. Something From This Century, Please? Museums and mosques are essential Cairo stops, but if you’re ready for something a little more modern slip over to Zamalek. This dynamic neighborhood is home to several modern art galleries and the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art. At night check out the local art scene. Discoverer Yousuf recommends Darb 1719 and 3elbert alwan for anyone looking for a local, cultural experience. Giving Cave Art a New Meaning A bit of drive from Cairo proper, this off-the- beaten-path discovery is an incredible experience. The Coptic Cave Church is carved into a massive cliffside, and seats 20,000 people, making it the largest church in the Middle East. Getting there is also an experience, as you pass through “Garbage City”, named such for CITYC CITYEDITIONS the Discoverer también es una experiencia, al pasar por “Garbage City”, nombrada así por sus vertederos y centros de reciclaje. ¡Además es 100% vegano! its landfills and recycling centers. This more impoverished area shows a different side of Cairo that, while not a classic “tourist” destination, is no less vital. EAT THIS Meet Me at the Cafe Social life in Cairo revolves around cafes, and if you ask a local for a hidden gem they’ll point you to their favorite corner coffee shop. From Cafe Riche to Harawi Cafe, the opportunities to drink Turkish coffee, sample hookah, and hang out with locals are endless. And when it’s time to order some food, you can’t go wrong with koshary. This local dish can be found everywhere and is a mix of pasta, rice, lentils, onions and spicy tomato sauce. Plus it’s 100% vegan! STAY HERE Windsor Hotel Cairo, cozy up in Cairo Whether you’re looking for total luxury or traveling on a strict budget, Cairo has something on all ends of the spectrum. From the lavish Four Seasons Cairo to the popular Sofitel to the inexpensive yet historic Windsor Hotel you really can’t go wrong with a night in Cairo. To help narrow your choices, our Discoverers recommend staying in the hotels in Zamalek near the Nile or Heliopolis. If Airbnb is more your style, choose something in the Al Maadi or Zamalek neighborhoods. WHEN TO GO October-November & March-April Summer is sweltering in Cairo, so peak tourist season is in the winter when temperatures drop significantly. However, tourist time means plenty of crowds, making Cairo’s famous attractions more difficult to experience. Visiting in the late fall or early spring will allow you to miss most of those crowds and still enjoy fair weather. ¿No? Time for Some Vitamin Sea Ahhhhh, feel that salty sea air on your skin? No? Don’t worry, we have just the fix. Windows down is required. I Believe in Pink Who doesn’t love the color pink? Maybe that’s why Lake Retba is such a popular draw for Dakar. This natural pink salt lake gets its rosy hue from the presence of algae, and has been a key location for salt mining. Many visitors come to this natural salt lake to take a picture and leave. But instead, hop on a quad to explore the outer edges of the area to make the most of your visit. Mbalax Movin’ Dakar is the birthplace of Youssou N’Dour, one of Africa’s biggest music stars. So it’s no wonder that the area is thrumming with a contagious beat. When the sun goes down the city becomes a radio with a station for everyone. From mellow melodies, to energetic beats, to mbalax (the local dance music that combines traditional sabar drumming with pop) you’ll find something everywhere you go. Check out clubs like Pénc Mi or the live music venue Just4u for a night out on the town. EAT THIS Savory Senegalese With the Atlantic Ocean a few feet away, you cannot miss out on some good old seafood. Wash down your meal with a glass of bissap (hibiscus) juice, and a perfect seaside view. STAY HERE Surf’s Up! If you’re in town to hit the waves why not sleep somewhere with quick access to the beach? Surf Camps like NGor Island Surf Camp have their own accommodations with dorm-style rooms where you can stay the night. Wake up and be in the water within minutes, but not before a full breakfast with an ocean view. WHEN TO GO December-May Peak tourist season runs when the rains stop and temperatures cool down at night. However, if you’re looking to really get a feel for the local culture, you might want to plan your trip in late spring so you can catch events like the St. Louis Jazz Festival and Rapandar. TIPS & TRICKS the Discoverer As backpackers, honeymooners, travelers, vacationers, or whatever you want to call it, we are all prime targets for scammers around the world. Speak to any of your friends and family and it’s likely they’ll be able to recount a personal or secondhand story of being caught off guard while away from home. While it’s hard to predict when and where we might be taken advantage of, fortunately, there’s a lot of knowledge about common scams. So here’s a few to remember for your next trip. Free ‘Friendship’ Bracelets This is a classic throughout big European cities, especially around the major attractions, and often targets female travelers. A happy-looking stranger will approach you and attempt to tie a ‘free’ bracelet around your wrist. Once attached, the person will then demand a payment for said bracelet and be more than happy to make a fuss if you say no. A variation of this is a magic trick that results in the bracelet appearing on your wrist or fingers in seconds Avoid this by walking past anyone that you deem to be suspect and keep your hands in your pockets if they try to follow you. More often than not they’ll move on to their next victim. Found a Ring Scam Here’s another old favorite of well-trained scammers. Out of the blue a person will appear by your side and point to a ring (could also be another item of jewelry) on the floor. They’ll then pick it up and try to convince you that it’s yours and subsequently ask for a reward. Alternatively, the perpetrator might try talking you into believing that the item is of great value but be willing to sell it at a discounted price. As with the bracelet scam, keep your head down and walk on if you suspect something isn’t right.
