Abstract

PALABRAS CLAVE: PIET BLOM, VIVIENDA COLECTIVA, PATRÓN, ALDO VAN EYCK The main objective of the article is to identify the design method used by the Dutch architect Piet Blom when designing his collective dwellings between 1969 and 1978. The methodology followed consists of an analysis of the drawings coming from the architect’s personal archive guarded in Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam in search of correspondences between the design of certain geometric patterns and that of three of his architectural proposals. The review concentrates on the files of Kasbah residential complex in Hengelo (1969-1974), Het Speelhuis residential complex and meeting centre in Helmond (1972-1977) and Oude Haven residential complex in Rotterdam (1977-1978). The graphic analysis is the basis for an ulterior critical examination of the suitability of encompassing these proposals and constructions within the discipline defined by Aldo van Eyck as a configurative discipline. Between 1969 and 1978, the Dutch architect Piet Blom (1934 - 1999) conducted three designs for collective housing based on the application of the same strategy. His proximity to Aldo van Eyck at the beginning of his professional career is the origin of most of the research on his work. We maintain that Blom, aware of Van Eyck’s theoretical discourse, used his theories as a basis for his early work, including his housing designs. The initial interest in Blom’s work quickly waned. Despite this, his designs and built works are still of interest today, not only because of the strategies he used, based on some of Van Eyck’s theories, but also because of the virtuosity and refinement of his drawings, which are the focus of our analysis. Early references to Blom’s work can be found in international journals such as Architecture d’Aujourd Hui (Editorial 1975a; 1975b) or A+U Architecture and Urbanism (Luchinger 1985). The number of titles published on his work increased from 2010 onwards. Particularly noteworthy are the studies carried out by academics from the Chair of Housing of Delft University of Technology (Heuvel and others 2014; Heuvel 2015; Putt 2011). The analysis of the collective housing design in Hengelo published in AA Files (Heuvel 2011a) and the reflection on the domestic character of the superstructures designed by Blom published in DASH are especially relevant as they complement this research (Heuvel 2011b). The analysis of the Noah’s Ark theoretical proposal offered by Palacios Labrador (2014) also stands out. We believe that the relative scarcity of studies at national and international level justifies the timeliness of a topic such as the one proposed. None of the bibliographical references consulted focus on the analysis of drawings as a tool for understanding the functioning of design strategies. In the following, three designs and project briefs for collective housing developed by Piet Blom are analysed by focusing on the correspondence between the elaboration of certain geometric patterns and the composition of the floor plans. Based on this analysis, the use of patterns as a design strategy in the ideation process is demonstrated. The graphic analysis is the basis for a subsequent critical reflection on the pertinence of placing these constructions close to what Van Eyck defined as a configurative discipline. Regarding the methodology, the analysis of the above-mentioned correspondences is based on an examination and interpretation of the original 233 expresión gráfica arquitectónica 46 234 1. This analysis is limited to three records where, after a preliminary review, evidence of the elaboration of geometric patterns and the use of templates in the ideation process is detected. Following the inductive method, the initial hypothesis is demonstrated. Finally, convergences with a configurative discipline are analysed based on an interpretation of historical and contemporary texts. Piet Blom’s collective housing (1969-1978): graphic analysis Design and project brief for Kasbah collective housing in Hengelo (1969-1974) Here we find the first evidence of the elaboration of geometric patterns and the use of templates in the design of the urbanisation of collective housing. The geometric pattern used in this project, found in one of the manuscripts, refers to a possible roof plan where the roof projections are represented schematically in line and the surfaces occupied by courtyards with yellow mass (Fig. 1). The manuscript is not dated, so we cannot establish with certainty when it was produced. It was probably made around July 1969, as a sketch dating from this date (Fig. 2) already includes a small scheme of the pattern that could constitute the precedent of the template. In its preparation, it was probably taken into account an incipient definition of the dwellings and the motif formed by two separate groups of four and eight dwellings. The sketch (Fig. 2) shows the first floor, second floor and section of each of the two groups of dwellings used to create the geometric pattern. The first group (left) is made up of four threebedroom dwellings that are developed in two different levels on the first and second floors. The second group (right) is made up of eight two-bedroom dwellings developed in two levels on the first and second floors, and on the second and third floors. In the pattern, one horizontal band made up of dwellings grouped according to the first type, separated by large courtyards, alternates with another band made up of dwellings grouped according to the second type, separated by smaller courtyards. The dimensions 1 nización de viviendas colectivas. By using the geometric pattern as a template, Blom produced several designs for the urbanisation until he came up with the final proposal. The sketches produced between August 1969 and April 1970 demonstrate this (Figs. 3 and 4). At an early stage of the ideation process, Blom proposed to fill the plot of land with a more ambitious housing development than the one finally built (Fig. 3). In the sketch dating from April 1970 (Fig. 4) it can be seen how the new proposal is based on the same geometric pattern used previously, only this time rotated by 90º, and includes a lesser number of dwellings. Not only does it occupy a smaller surface area, but it also presents a less compact fabric thanks to the introduction of a large open space for collective use and the modification of the established groups of dwellings. In no case do the proposals appear to be conditioned by the order of the neighbouring urban developments. The drawing dating from July 1970 (Fig. 5) represents a partial elevation (-I-), two partial cross-sections (-II- and -III-) and three partial longitudinal sections (-X-, -XI- and -XII-). It shows how the voids generated by the private terraces on the first floor and the collective courtyards on the ground floor ensure ventilation and lighting la ventilación e iluminación de las viviendas. Prepared by the authors on the basis of archival material planos horizontales equidistantes, como se observa en la sección (Fig. 7). This spatial articulation fosters a close relationship between inhabitants in that the views from the dwellings in one band overlook the adjacent dwellings laterally (Fig. 6). (a) First floor of a housing unit. On this floor, the slab follows a triangular layout, although horizontal section shows a complex polygonal layout as a result of cutting the inclined planes that comprise the envelope. (b) Second floor of a housing unit. The hexagonal floor slab is not visible in its entirety, as the cutting plane that allows the floor plan to be represented is at a higher level and sections the inclined planes of the envelope prism containing the staircase to access the dwelling, and a rectangular prism, which rotates by 30 degrees in the YZ plane, where the different dwelling rooms are located. These are developed in three floors that are generated by sectioning the deviated rectangular prism with three equidistant horizontal planes, as can be seen in the section (Fig. 7). To analyse the layouts generated by the different horizontal planes, Blom uses a sketch based on the roof plan of the deviated prism (Fig. 8). With this sketch, he not only studies the layout of the floor slabs of each level, but also the geometric development of the inclined planes as the cutting height varies, which are necessary to represent the first and second floors in projection. To demonstrate this aspect, we refer to an undated transparency showing two drawings (Fig. 9). The geometric pattern is made up of a motif consisting of three overlapping Kubus-type housing units that do not intersect. To study the viability of the proposed motif, the hexagonal slabs of the second floors are taken as a reference. The three separate units are arranged around a common vertex. This arrangement ensures the ventilation and lighting of the rooms despite the compactness of the ensemble. The construction of these three dwellings, which still stand on the plot of land bounded by Prins Hendriklaan, Wilhelminalaan and Kasteel-Traverse in Helmond, confirmed the technical feasibility of the Kubes-type housing units and the motif (Fig. 11). Design and project brief for Het Speelhuis collective housing and meeting centre in Helmond (1972- 1977) On the basis of the studies carried out to build the three Kubus-type dwellings, Blom designed a geometric pattern consisting of a continuous grid of dwellings arranged around courtyards in groups of six. The undated drawings (Fig. 12) represent, from left to right, the horizontal sections at the level of the second-floor slabs – where we can see the juxtaposition of the housing units around the hexagonal openings–, at the level of the first-floor slabs and the projection of the roof plan – where the starshaped courtyards are emphasised using yellow mass. Although undated, we believe that these templates were produced at an early stage in the process of the design of Het Speelhuis collective housing and meeting centre located on the current Piet Blomplein in Helmond. In the first phase, Blom focuses on the design of the meeting centre based on the geometric pattern described above. To accommodate the larger meeting rooms, the originally independent units are spatially linked on all floors and the interior courtyards are eliminated, as can be seen in the plan of June 1974 (Fig. 13). The deformation of the pattern on the basis of the templates referring to the different floors also affects the section. On the one hand, the replacement of the multiple roofs by a single pyramidal three-sided roof (Fig. 14) means 10 11 240 an increase in height. On the other hand, the accommodation of larger rooms requires the occupation of certain voids, such as those formed between the accesses on the ground floor or the interstices between the deviated cubes on the first floor. Apart from the design and brief project for the meeting centre, different arrangements of the dwellings around the facility are assessed in the first phase by using the templates for the design of the urbanisation. An undated drawing (Fig. 13) shows the roof plan of a possible urbanisation in which the facility is placed in a central position. In the plan dating from June 1974 (Fig. 14) it can be seen how Blom places the facility off-centre as part of an amorphous urbanisation and next to a square flanked by Kubus-type dwellings. In this first phase, the design of Het Speelhuis meeting centre was implemented following the hexagonal layout suggested in the urban plans of 1974. Few years after its construction, the meeting centre (Fig. 15) was unfortunately demolished. In a second stage, the design and project brief for the collective housing around the meeting centre were carried out. It will be the subject of future research to analyse the scope of the application of geometric patterns in Piet Blom’s designs and built work, focusing on the aspects mentioned above. n Notes 1 / Note here the potential interest in analysing the relationship between the module as a two-dimensional compositional unit and the type as an architectural structure linked to a residential function. 2 / In applying the method of formal composition described above, Blom echoes techniques employed in the visual arts by contemporary artists whose work can be classified as optical art, such as Maurits Cornelis Escher and Victor Vasarely. Despite formal correspondences, the compositional process used by Blom differs from that employed by artists and architects in his immediate sphere. For example, Herman Hertzberger, a contemporary architect who also trained close to Aldo van Eyck, argued that the success of repetition lay in the form’s ability to accommodate different uses over time, which determined a specific ideation process (Grijalba et al. 2019) different from that used by Blom.
