ABSTRACT The coverage and biomass fluctuations of Caulerpa prolifera (Chlorophyta) were used to assess the influence of the alga on the composition of its associated animal community, on a small spatial scale.
La INTRODUCTION The presence of vegetation is determinant for a greater species richness and greater animal density, relative to adjacent substrates without vegetation coverage (e.g., Heck and Orth, 1980; Irlandi, 1994; Hech et al., 1995). According to Lewis (1984), factors conditioning this richness may be synthesized in the following: greater number of microhabitats or structural complexity, many food resources, protection against predators, deposition and stabilization of sediments and organic matter, and a decrease in hydrodynamic stress and erosion. Different authors have emphasized the influence of each one of these factors as the main cause of the importance of these systems; however, most of them agree that the complexity of the habitat is the most relevant, although with different interpretations (e.g., Heck and Orth, 1980; Hall and Bell, 1988; Hacker and Steneck, 1990). Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskal) Lamouroux (Chlorophyta) usually forms dense meadows over soft bottoms from 1 to 20 m in depth. It is composed of a series of stolons that form an inextricable net, from which fine rhizoids emerge towards the substrate, and erect and flat fronds arise. The biological cycle of this alga is intermediate between annual and perennial algae. The meadow is permanent (the disappearance of the old thallus and the appearance Bymeans of ordination analysis, based on species abundance, a series of groups, related to the different algal density recorded, were obtained: those stations with highest algal biomass (stations 1, 2 and 8) and the remaining stations (medium and low biomass). According to a canonical correspondence analysis, total algal biomass, coverage and percentage of organic matter explained the differences in the composition of the macrobenthic communities. The response of some species to the spatial distribution of the alga are also discussed. In conclusion, the patchiness of Caulerpa beds cause a high degree of heterogeneity in a spatially reduced system, suggesting the importance of these sites for the biodiversity in coastal ecosystems. La evolución del ciclo vegetativo de C. prolifera es muy dependiente de la temperatura of the new one is more or less progressive), but none of the parts of the alga live for more than one year. The meadow found in Algeciras Bay (southern Spain) is one of the few remaining parts of the old marine phanerogam meadow that used to cover much of its bottom in the first decades of the century (De Buen, 1924). The C. prolifera formations, even though they do not constitute such a rich and structured system as the phanerogam meadow, allow the settlement of important animal populations, especially in impoverished environments, of scarce water exchange and with considerable input of organic matter (e.g., harbors). Its peculiar biological cycle and uneven degree of coverage make it relatively easy to study the possible influence of the alga on the composition of the associated animal community on a small spatial scale. MATERIAL AND METHODS The meadow of C. prolifera is located in the internal bight of Algeciras Bay, protected by the San Felipe pier (La Línea) (fig. 1). The study area features scarce water renewal and poor hydrodynamics, is used for landings and receives several small urban effluents. The meadow covers a surface of around 0.06 km2, ranging between 5 and 2 m in depth. Three parallel, 200-m-long transects were established 100 m apart, with an eastward orientation. These transects covered practically the whole meadow (fig. 1) and a total of 10 stations were selected based on their location and the plant density observed. The evolution of the vegetative cycle of C. prolifera is very dependent on the water temperature (Meinesz, 1980); thus, samples were collected in September 1992, when the temperatures are highest and, consequently, the vegetative development of the alga is greatest (Sánchez-Moyano, 1996).
Las réplicas se tamizaron en agua At each station, five replicates were taken, by diving, with a bore of 15 × 15 cm perimeter, with which the minimum sampling area was covered. Each sample was obtained down to a depth of 5 cm in the sediments. Replicates were sieved in seawater through a 0.5-mm mesh and the different species were then separated, determined and quantified. The animal community selected was the sessile and vagile invertebrate macrofauna. The algal biomass of each replicate was separately calculated for fronds and stolons. Stolons were first cleaned to eliminate any remains attached to the rhizoids. The dry weight of each fraction was estimated (after 24hours at 70ºC). During the sampling, the vegetation coverage observed along the three transects was recorded, according to a subjective scale of 0 to 5. The percentage of organic matter in the sediments was calculated after calcination of three 2-g replicates of dry sediment from eachstation at 500ºC for 5 hours, obtaining the ash-free dry weight. Due to the dominance of the fine or pelitic fraction, the sediment granulometry was determined with the Boyoucos method (Boyoucos, 1934). Statistical treatments The species richness, diversity (Shannon and Weaver, 1963) and quantitative dominance were calculated with the abundance data (number of individuals per square meter). The spatial differences were determined by means of the Kruskal-Wallis test. Possible spatial variations in the percentage of organic matter were verified through a simple ANOVA (model I), after checking normality by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and homogeneity of variances (Barlett test). The relationships between biotic and abiotic parameters were determined by the Pearson analysis of correlation. The significance level used in the different statistical tests was 0.05, specifying, in each case, when other levels were used. The affinities among the stations were established by a non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis (MDS) (PRIMER program) based on the Bray-Curtis similarity index. Abundance data were transformed according to the fourth root . The validity of the ordination was verified with the Kruskal stress coefficient. x 4
2). x 4 Differences in the community composition were established by the ANOSIM nonparametric test (PRIMER program) based on the abundance of species at each station. Its statistic R has a value of 0 when there are no differences and of 1 in the opposite case. To determine if a relationship exists between the physical environment and the faunistic composition, a canonical correspondence analysis was applied. This analysis is a direct gradient technique in which the resulting ordination of stations is directly related to the values of the environmental factors (Ter Braak, 1986). The environmental factors selected were: total biomass of the alga, frond biomass, stolon biomass, coverage, percentage of organic matter in sediments and granulometry (according to the percentage of the pelitic component). The Monte Carlo test was applied for the first axis in order to verify the statistical significance of the analysis. RESULTS Physical characteristics of the meadow The Caulerpa meadow showed a high degree of development during the sampling period, with a large surface and high coverage percentage (fig. 1). This can be clarified by representing the values of the algal biomass (total biomass, fronds and stolons) at each station (fig. 2). Granulometry details of each sampling station based on the composition of silt, clay and sand are given in table 1. At those stations with greater plant density (1, 2 and 8, for instance), a dominance of the pelitic fraction, mainly silt, was observed. In barer areas, such as station 10, or at those situated on the meadow limits, such as 5 and 7, the presence of the sand component was more noticeable. A spot located around station 6 was discordant with the tendencies observed, with an important

De hecho, las estaciones 1 y 2 presentaron unos The content of organic matter in the sediment (fig. 3) shows a significant correlation with the total algal biomass (r = 0.691). The spatial differences are notable (ANOVA, F= 17.004), with a gradient of higher percentage of organic matter in the first transect (stations 1, 2, 3 and 4) decreasing towards the last. The proximity of the San Felipe pier to the first transect must protect, as well as modify, the patterns of the local currents, favoring the deposition of fine materials. In fact, stations 1 and 2 showed very high values of organic matter (close to 16%). At station 8, a new peak of organic matter is observed because of the high plant density, whereas the minimum was located at station 10, where Caulerpa was barely present. Faunistic results A total of 140 taxa were identified, among which 50 mollusks, 41 polychaetes, 35 crustaceans and 5 echinoderms are distinguished (table 2). De hecho, existe una correlación negativa entre la Stations 1, 2 and 8, located in areas where plant density is greatest, had the highest percentage of mollusks, which proved to be the dominant group. The species that contributed most to this percentage tended to be animals that crawl on the fronds or need a surface to settle on, such as the bivalve Anomia ephippium L. 1758, with a quantitative dominance of 11.35% at station 1, 8.38% at station 2 and 7.76% at station 8. Nonetheless, the most abundant species were the prosobranch Pusillina radiata (Philippi, 1836), with a dominance of 22.30%, 29.43% and 13.97%, respectively, and Jujubinus striatus (L., 1758) with 5.76%, 7.19% and 5.31%, respectively. The latter was less represented but greater in size than the former. Among the mollusks, bivalves such as Loripes lacteus (L., 1758) and Abra alba (W. Wood, 1802) were also abundant, at least at stations 1 and 8. At station 2, the site with the highest peak of algal biomass, bivalves were scarcely represented due possibly to the physical constraint as a result of the stolon system for the development of this class. In fact, there is a negative correlation between coverage and the total number of bivalve species (r = –0.698). Other species that greatly depend on the surfaces available for settlement are the polychaete Spirorbis militaris (Claparede, 1870) that grows on the Caulerpa fronds, with 7.26% at station 2, and the bryozoan Watersipora subovoidea (D’Orbigny, 1852). On the other hand, crustaceans were scarcely represented at these stations, especially at 1 and 2, either by swimming species, such as gammarids, or by species in the watersediment interface, such as the tanaidaceans Apseudes latreillei (Milne-Edwards, 1828) and Apseudes talpa (Montagu, 1808) (both species were numerically important in the rest of the meadow). At stations 3 and 4 there was an important percentage of arthropods, mainly of A.
These differences were tested by means of the one-way ANOSIM analysis (table 3). Even though the surface covered by the whole study area was rather reduced, the spatial differences between each of the stations were noticeable. The smallest differences were detected between stations 3 and 4, which have a similar plant density and are spatially very close together. Moreover, the group formed by stations 5, 6, 7 and 9 has lower values, which confirms the groups established by the ordination analysis. According to the results obtained with the canonical correspondence analysis (table 4), the first axis is strongly related to the total biomass, the percentage of organic matter and the coverage, whereas the second axis is only related to coverage. In figure 7, as indicated by the position of the arrows, a strong relationship is observed between parameters such as biomass and organic matter. Hence, the stations are positioned on the gradient imposed by these variables, with stations 1 and 2 (maximum algal density) evident at one end and station 10 (minimum coverage) at the other. DISCUSSION There is an important influence of the algaldensity on the composition of the macrofaunal community in the Caulerpa prolifera meadow. The fact that it is an area subject tohigh organic loads and with poor water renewal might imply scant animal representation, at least in species number. However, the presence of the meadow itself constitutes an attraction for the development of an important fauna. Caulerpa stolons have a large capacity to retain sediment, favouring its stabilization and a certain humification of the environment. Tabla 3. Sin embargo, la presencia de la Therefore, plant density must influence the granulometric composition and the percentage of organic matter in sediments, factors that are considered among the most important to determine the species which develop in soft bottoms (Gray, 1981). In other areas close to Algeciras Bay, for example, normal values of organic content for sandy bottoms are between 1.39% and 3.11%, whereas for biodetritic bottoms with muddy components, they are between 1.06% and 4%. Compared to these percentages, the values for the point of maximum organic contamination of the bay, the Saladillo inlet, range from 10.33% to 21.06% (Estacio, 1996; Estacio et al., 1997). López-Jamar (1986) considers that, in soft bottoms without vegetation, there is considerable evidence of contamination of organic origin, with values around 7%. Hence, the values recorded at the meadow (16% maximum) suggest humification of the substrate caused by the presence of vegetation. In general, substrates with high organic loads produce an increase in abundance, biomass and Tabla 4. En contraste con faunal production, except when anaerobic conditions are generated (Buchanan and Moore, 1986). This may be the reason for the negative effect of the vegetation coverage on the infauna, especially on the bivalves (Olafsson, 1988, Sundbäck et al., 1990), either because of the development of anoxic conditions or because of the physical constraint due to the stolon structure. In this study, the high percentages of organic matter at station 2 (values greater than 16%), in addition to the presence of dense vegetation may be the main reason for the lesser presence and abundance of bivalve species relative to other areas. However, in general, the presence of vegetation coverage has had a positive effect on the animal density, 1 2 34 5 6 78 9 10 BIOM MTOR GRAN COBER Eje 1 Eje 2 Figura 7. This may be due to two factors: the enrichment of the trophic resources (Everett, 1994) and shelter against predators (Orth et al., 1984; Irlandi and Peterson, 1991). It has been shown that the diversity of animal species associated to vegetation increases as the plant biomass increases (Heck and Wetstone, 1977; Orth et al., 1984). Differences in animal density have been detected between areas with and without vegetation, with values 3 and 52 times higher for the infauna and epifauna, respectively (Summerson and Peterson, 1984). However, minimum diversity or species richness were recorded precisely at the sites where the density of Caulerpa was highest (stations 1 and 2). In fact, there are negative correlations between algal biomass and these parameters. According to Heck and Orth (1980), the behavior of the epifauna, mainly vagile invertebrates and juvenile fishes, in relation to plant density (measured in this case as plant surface per unit of substrate), is of a progressive increase in the number of specimens until an asymptotic value is reached, after which the vegetation becomes so dense that unfavorable conditions occur, such as anoxia phenomena, space reduction, etc., that cause the number of individuals to decrease. The decrease in diversity may also be due to the presence of certain species that have a very high quantitative dominance and are favored by the existence of abundant surfaces, such as the prosobranchs Jujubinus striatus and Pusillina radiata, or by the high humification conditions, such as the polychaetes Notomastus latericeus and Capitella capitata. When space is limited and dominance hierarchy exists, diversity decreases as the plant density increases as a result of the success of the dominant species (Dayton, 1971). Nevertheless, according to Bell and Westoby (1986), this model of the faunal
En el presente trabajo se observa cómo las respuestas de las distintas especies son diferentes distribution based on plant density is true only when all the species of the community, or at least the dominant ones, have the same response. However, one would expect each species to respond individually to different conditions. In this work, it was observed how the response of the species to the spatial distribution of the algal biomass was different. Hence, the numerically important species of prosobranchs (J. striatus, P. radiata and Bittium reticulatum, Da Costa, 1778) are very limited by the presence of the alga or its consequences, such as the higher percentage of organic matter. This dependence on the algal biomass and especially the fronds may be because they constitute available surfaces for the development of an important periphyton, the preferred food of most herbivores and grazers (Robertson and Mann, 1982; Orth and van Montfrans, 1984). Low algal biomass (especially from the stolon system) must also favor the abundance of macrofauna with limited mobility, such as bivalves, as the spacefor development increases (Baron et al., 1993). Bivalves develop in good numbers at all the sites sampled, except at station 2, due to the constraint imposed by the high stolon density. The scarcity of crustaceans at stations 1 and 2 is also remarkable. Many of the most abundant species have digging habits, such as Apseudes latreillei, A. talpa and Corophium annulatum, and the presence of a dense stolon system must hinder their locomotion or, at least, reduce the space available. Amphipods and tanaidaceans are one of the most common prey of fishes and other epibenthonic predators, such as decapods, in these systems (Nelson, 1979; Stoner, 1983). Even though a direct relationship has been observed between crustacean abundance, especially amphipods, and plant density, a high value of vegetation coverage may also favor certain predators, offering them camouflage and reducing visibility for the potential prey (Heck and Orth, 1980; Howard
Precisely at the stations where a large amount of fronds may favor camouflage, there is an important presence of gobies and the most numerous populations of decapods occur, such as Hippolyte sp. or Palaemon adspersus Rathke, 1837, which are potential epifaunal predators (Nelson, 1981; Chessa et al., 1989). Moreover, under conditions of extreme plant density, competition may develop for limited resources, such as space. In fact, aggressive intra- and interspecific behaviors have been demonstrated in high densities of amphipods (Brawley and Adey, 1981). Under conditions of intermediate or low algal biomass, however, limitations of space are less probable, and there is a clear separation in the space between the most dominant species found; for example, Ampelisca diadema and Apseudes latrellei in the infauna, Corophium annulatum in the water-sediment interface, or Ampithoe ramondi Auoduin, 1826 and Microdeutopus versiculatus (Bate, 1856) in the epifauna. In conclusion, the results suggest that the patchiness of Caulerpa, together with the different faunal requirements, propitiate a high degree of heterogeneity in such a spatially reduced system like this one, creating a mosaic of abundances of the different species. This reveals the importance of these sites for the maintenance of the biodiversity in coastal ecosystems and, especially, in areas subject to higher anthropic pressure, such as ports and zones near urban developments.
