Leveraging established social networking sites (SNS) can help sports events managers better market respective events and attract wider audiences (Herrera-Torres et al., 2019; Annamalai et al., 2021). Therefore, this study aims to analyse the perspectives and potential of the determining and underlying factors for using social networking sites in sports event tourism. METHODS A mixed methods approach was chosen for this study. Quantitative data was collected through a self-ad- ministered online questionnaire; qualitative data was collected via a focus group and a semi-structured interview. PROCEDURE A self-administered online questionnaire collected quantitative data via Google Forms. Results from the quantitative stage were contrasted with results from a focus group and a semi-structured interview. Three experts, including perspectives of athletes, professionals, and tourists, were thoroughly selected through targeted sampling. 262 Habilidad Motriz 63 | octubre 24 ABSTRACTS TURISMO, OCIO Y DEPORTE RESULTS The average age of the 42 respondents from the survey was 42.64 years (SD = 12.76), of which 40.5% were men and 59.5 % were women. Descriptive data about the different factors in the context of social media and sports events are detailed in Table 1. The highest mean values were found in perceived control, usage intention, effective communication, and sports identity. In contrast, the mean values for attitude and behavioural engagement were below 5.0. Table 1 Descriptive statistics of factors. The most relevant findings of the interviews are highlighted below. All interviewees agreed that SNS are crucial for information and publicity of sports events. Considering the intention to use SNS in the context of sports events, R1 and R3 confirmed that content about sports events posted on SNS influence users. R1 noted that the more frequently someone is exposed to an advertisement on a SNS, the more interested they might become, which differs from TV advertisements. Specific benefits of social media around a sports event include information seeking, awareness creation of lesser-known sports, economic benefits, and wide reach. Both R1 and R2 agreed that the most important uses and gratifications (U&G) are primarily information and interaction. R3 also emphasized interaction but agreed that other U&G factors are also important. As a major challenge, R1 thought of the higher digitalisation and the problem with less personalisation, whereas R2 countered that people also connect on social media to arrange sports activities. R3 could not name a specific challenge of social media but stated that the reach of a sports event ultimately depends on the success of the sports event itself. The interviewees did not find any problems with control over SNS usage. Regarding sports identity, R1 and R2 agreed that it influences SNS usage. In contrast, R3, the social media manager of a running club, reckoned that sports identity does not influence SNS usage. R3 noted that also many people follow a page due to other factors, such as belonging to a group in a specific geographical region or being interested in the content shared. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Comparing results of the two study phases reveals that several factors are important for fostering the use of SNS in the context of sports event tourism. Other studies have also identified the heterogeneity of decision-making determinants of sports tourists (Chen et al., 2023), as well as various social media influences on individuals (Grover et al., 2022). The findings are important for sports event managers to gain better perspectives on the overall potential and the different factors that can influence social media usage among sports tourists. However, not all factors influencing sports tourists in their social media usage are fully understood. 263 Habilidad Motriz 63 | octubre 24 ABSTRACTS TURISMO, OCIO Y DEPORTE REFERENCES Annamalai, B., Yoshida, M., Varshney, S., Pathak, A.
