AROCHE Aroche is a typical village of the hills of Huelva. It is located in the foothills of Sierra Morena mountain range. It represents a comforting and attractive place for any visitor. Aroche is one of the villages with the best heritage in the province of Huelva, it is within the Natural Park Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. Figura 2. Aroche Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) Two natural preserves are within its area: Las Peñas and Sierra Pelada, and Rivera Del Aserrador. Animal and vegetation species of indisputable ecological value, such as the black vulture, the black stork and some varieties of orchids are found in Aroche. The singularity of its historic city center was protected when it was declared as Historical Site in 1980. It’s most important elements are its Islamic castle, The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the artillery wall of the 17th century and numerous stately houses, which make a walk along their streets a cultural sight. The woods of Aroche allow the development of hunting which was traditionally an important activity in Aroche. Deer and wild boar are the main hunted species, partridge and thrush are also hunted in the Monteria, which forms part of the villages festivals. 4.2. WHAT TO VISIT 4.2.1. Visitors Centre Visitors are advised to stop at the Visitor´s centre which is just a few metres away from the town hall square, in a historic building that was restored by the local administration. In this place, you will be informed about all the tourist possibilities that Aroche offers, timetables, restaurants, accommodations, etc. -11- Vázquez Franco, Francisco Figura3. Visitors Centre Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche: (www.aytoaroche.es) The building, an old Hieronymite Convent goes back to 1.634, when the Hieronymite Order received the Apostolic Bull of Pope Urban VIII in Madrid, by which they took possession of the Priory of Aroche Town and five ninths of the town´s tates. In 1803 the Order transferred its profits in the village to the Aroche Parish Church, but later, with the ecclesiastical confiscation of the 19th century, it would become a tenement house. During the Civil War part of its rooms were used as prison cells. A few years ago, it was acquired by the Department of Public Works, which allocated part of the building to state subsidized housing and part to a cultural centre, where the visitor´s centre, the municipal archaeological collection and the historical archives are currently located. 4.2.2. Archaeological Museum It was created in 1958, and it has experienced important modifications regarding both its collection and its location. It currently occupies three rooms of La Cilla building, an old Hieronymite Convent. Figura 4. Archaeological Museum Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) The first room is about the Hispanic-Roman city of Arucci/Turobiga, located in the Llanos de la Belleza, next to and under the Medieval Chapel of Saint Mamés. Many pieces of great interest can be seen. These include fragments of statues, cornices, capitals, busts and one of the best collections of Roman inscriptions in the province. In the second room, you will find a new space opened in 2015 which was dedicated to the “Tesorillo de Arucci/Turobiga”, a treasure of 376 silver coins, Roman denarii documented in the Casa Norte of the city. This room also was a prison during the Civil War. The third room is composed of pieces going back from prehistory to the Modern -12- TFG-TUR. Traducción al inglés del Portal Turístico del Ayuntamiento de Aroche Age, where polished stone axes, arrowheads, some Visigothic pieces, Islamic oil lamps, a model of the castle and some weapons connected to it are exhibited. 4.2.3. Almohade Castle The Almohade Castle was built at the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century. It crowns the hill where the city center is located, inside its walls is a bullring built in 1804. Figura 5. Almohade Castle Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) The current entrance to the fortress dates back to the 18th century; It has a semicircular arch and a baroque pinnacle above the wall. The castle of Aroche follows the model of the Islamic fortresses in the province, it has a rectangular cuadribugium with ten towers, four of them in the angles and six more along the wall. The fortress has still a direct access gate that might correspond to the first phase of construction of the fortress. In the south flank is the so called “Puerta de la Reina” (Queen’s Gate) 4.2.4. Artillery Wall The Artillery Wall maintains a plan of 1735 which allows to see the complete layout of this wall, with four bastions, a big tower and the Tower of Saint Ginés, currently surrounded by buildings. Figura 6. Artillery Wall Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) The wall must have been built as a defence during the War with Portugal in 1640, though there is some evidence of a wall in the 15th Century. The wall had three gates, apparently all of them with portcullis and there is some documentation of some of them -13- Vázquez Franco, Francisco having a drawbridge. The dimensions of the wall are two and a half meters wide with a variable height, as it adapts to the topography of the ground. The wall is built with rough stone and lime mortar. The transportation of stones, sand and lime for such a work is impressive. 4.2.5. Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción It is a building of big dimensions, with three naves and four sections, the last one is unfinished. The current church was started in 1483, built over a previous building of the 14th century. Figura 7. Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Fuente Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) Several Masters of the Cathedral of Seville, among them Diego de Riaño and Hernán Ruíz II, participated in this work. It includes the Mudejar, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. The two side fronts, in Mannerist style, are dated from 1.560 and are works of Hernán Ruíz II. The façade dates from the 15th Century in the lower part, and gothic style in the upper part with archivolts and a Mudejar window Toledo´s style. The aisles are covered with ribed vaults, with pointed and semicircular arches. The central nave rises on the sides and is closed with starry vaults that falls on pillars. The naves appear very ornamented with heraldic and floral motifs. 4.2.6. The Rosary Museum Recently inaugurated in its new location at the Convent of la Cilla, this peculiar museum has more than 2.000 pieces from all over the world, and from personalities such as the Prince and Princess of Monaco, etc. Undoubtedly this museum is unique in the world. -14- TFG-TUR. The Rosary Museum Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) The new exhibition allows a better understanding of this collection, its creation process and history. It is located next to the archaeological museum and Visitors’ Reception Centre. 4.2.7. Chapel of Saint Mamés This chapel is one of the so-called repopulation chapels, built between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century. It was expanded and improved in the 15th and 18th centuries. Figura 9. Chapel of Saint Mamés Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.ayotaroche.es) The connection of the chapel of Saint Mamés with the roman city of Turobriga goes beyond the mere reusing of construction materials, as it can be seen in the columns of the apse, the roman altar used to support the pulpit or the roman ashlars used to build the outside porches. Apart from using the deposit as quarry materials, the chapel is built on the ground plan of a previous building, the Roman basilica of Turobriga, as it can be seen at the lower part of the north wall, under some inner pillars or in the separation of the pulpit and the naves. The chapel has a basilica ground plan with three naves separated by pointed arches frames by an alfiz and a presbytery with a Gothic ribbed vault. In the 15th century the chapel was ornamented with some impressive frescos reproducing religious scenes, such as The Last Supper or The Annunciation among others. During the 17th century numerous plague epidemics are documented in the town. This fact forced to use the -15- Vázquez Franco, Francisco chapel as a hospital, whitewashing all its walls and hiding the frescos of the chapel for centuries. In the 18th century the outside porches and the belfry were added. From the artistic point of view, it is one of the most important chapels in the province. The recent restoration financed by the Department of Culture, the City Council of Aroche and the Bishopric of Huelva has given back light to those scenes that were sealed by lime and were discovered for the first time in the eighties, when they proceeded to the restoration of the roof of the chapel. These works caused the partial loss of the scenes of the north Wall, at the top. The restoration carried out exposed three scenes in the north Wall, Saint Christopher with the pilgrims on the belt and Baby Jesus on his shoulder, the Annunciation and the Last Supper. Above the main arch another Annunciation was documented, and the scene found on the south Wall meant a big surprise. It is a scene of the Christian conquest of Aroche, where a bigger image of Santiago, on horseback, appears fighting against another figure also riding a horse. Only some remains are left. This would probably be a “Moor”, behind whom there is an Arab fortress formed by a castle with horseshoe arches, and a line of walls with some Females figures crying and saying good bye to their army. It could be the first and the only pictorial representation of the reconquest of Aroche, and despite of being very fragmented due to the many works the chapel has experienced over the years. It is enough to interpret the scene. 4.2.8. Information Point of the Natural Park of Aracena and Picos de Aroche It is also located in the Convent of La Cilla, together with the Rosary Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Visitors’ Reception Centre and the Municipal Historical Archive. Figura 10. Information Point of the Natural Park Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) This room gives complete information about the Natural Park of Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche as well as Natural Sites Sierra Pelada and Riviera del Aserrador and las Peñas. 4.2.9. The Governor´s Castle Room The Governor´s Room was inaugurated in 2.015, a new space inside the castle of Aroche which recreates the Governor´s Castle Room in one of the vaulted halls the castle still has. -16- TFG-TUR. The Castle´s Governor´s Room Fuente: ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) One will also find in this new space informative posters about the history of the castle and its current use as bullring. The visits are made from the Convent of la Cilla, though during long weekends and holiday seasons one will find it open. There is no need to go to the Convent of la Cilla. 4.3. FIESTAS Y EVENTOS 4.3.1. FEGAR It is the livestock and agri-food Fair that Aroche celebrates around the third week of September in the exhibition site of Llano de la Torre, which has become a referent in the provinces of Huelva and Badajoz for those who are very fond of horses. Figura 12. FEGAR Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) In the last years some events for the most important equestrian championships at both national and autonomous levels have been developed in FEGAR, from the king´s Cup to the Andalusian Championship of Dressage. They also exhibit children, harnessing, horsewomen, or morphological championships, which attract more and more visitors to this Fair every year. Additionally, exhibitions like that of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in 2014, among others, on Saturday night, the important exhibition of dressage, light and sound takes place. -17- Vázquez Franco, Francisco The Fair is completed with an exhibition of livestock and commercial stands connected to livestock, food and agriculture. For everybody’s enjoyment there are children´s play areas, bar area, various performances and tasting. 4.3.2. August Fair The fair of Aroche is celebrated from the 17th to the 20th of August, though the celebration will start on: · Saturday 12th with the 4th Diana Festival. · Sunday 13th with the 14th Competition of Bands. · Monday 14th with the Night of the Candles. · Tuesday 15 with the Procession of Virgen de los Dolores. · Wednesday 16th with the Emigrant´s Day. 4.3.3. 4th Diana Festival Diana Festival is an event that in 2.017 will celebrate its 4th edition. It is a fiesta of Roman origin in honour of Goddess Diana, goddess of hunting and nature present in the archaeological site of Arucci/Turobriga, the Roman City of Aroche. Figura 13. Diana Festival Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) This event consists of dramatized guided visits to the Roman city with extras in each of the visiting sector of the site, recreating everyday scenes of the life of this important city created at the end of the 1th century before Christ in times of Augustus. These visits include the medieval chapel of Saint Mamés, a historic-artistic jewel, built on the remains of the Roman Basilica. It also includes an additional activity like gladiator fights, classic theater or stars contemplation. The 2017 edition will take place on the 28th and 29th of July, and the program is not closed yet, however we can advance that Emeritae Lvdvs Gladiatorvm will be again recreating the fights of the gladiators in the Roman City of Arucci. There will also be a gladiator´s presentation in the square of Aroche, activities in the museum, parades, and much more. We remind you that Diana Festival has limited capacity -18- TFG-TUR. Fiestas de san Isidro The association of Saint Isidro recovered a couple of years ago these traditional fiestas in honor of Saint Isidro the Ploughman. On the 13th and the 14th of May the Association of Saint Isidro organizes the recovered fiestas in Honour of Saint Isidro. Figura 14. Fiestas de San Isidro Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) Schedule of events: · 9th, 10th and 11th of May: Solemn Triduum in honor of Saint Isidro the Ploughman at the Parish Church at 21:00 pm. · On 11th of May: Blessing and imposition of medals. · Saturday 13th of May: At 8:30 am lively reveille that will awake our village performed by the drummer Mr. Juan Manuel Mozo. At 13:00 pm the marquee situated in Paseo de Ordóñez Valdés will be opened. At 17:00 pm there will be bar service. At 18:00 pm there will be a children´s performance by Tomasa de Clown At 19:00 pm the performances of several singers will begin. This will provide entertainment in honour of Saint Isidro the Ploughman, and then the Procession will take place. After the Procession, there will be a tasting of mushroom stew, with the entertainment provided by the Brass Band of Cerro de Andévalo. 4.3.5. Procession of Saint Mamés The fiesta par excellence of Aroche is its Procession in honour of the Patron Saint Mamés. It is celebrated in May, in 2017 it will be the 20th and the 21st, in the place known as Llanos de la Belleza, about two kilometers away from the city center, next to the Chapel of Saint Mamés, built on the Hispanic-Roman City of Arucci/Turobriga. -19- Vázquez Franco, Francisco In this link, you can see a virtual reconstruction of our forum: vimeo.com/38837606 4.4.5. The Thermal Baths We ignore the total length of these public baths. The excavated area probably does not even reach one third of them. Currently the natatio of 9.70x6.42 meters is the only part of the bath able to be visited together with the part of the associated infrastructures. Figura 23. The Thermal Baths Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) The floor and the inside were covered with opus signinum, mortar of waterproof finish. There is a perimeter corridor between the swimming pool and the closing walls that allows the movements of the bathers. The filling and the emptying of the swimming pool is through a ceramic pipe, located next to the stairs, which would drop the water directly into the main channeling, of large dimensions and with flooring of pressed bricks, which communicates with the other swimming pools of the spa. The building must have been built in the 2nd century, probably in Hadrian´s times. 4.4.6. The Casa Norte (The North House) It is the only house in Arucci/Turobriga whose ground plan we know completely and it has been recently excavated. Figura 24. La Casa Norte (The North House) Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) It is a rectangular building of about 343 square meters and occupies a complete block. The house is organized around a central atrium or patio, from which all room can be accessed. Within this patio the impluvium and the channeling system for draining water have been documented. From the patio, one can gain access to the other rooms, the dining -26- TFG-TUR. Traducción al inglés del Portal Turístico del Ayuntamiento de Aroche room (triclinium), bedroom (cubiculum), kitchen (culina), etc. apart from two taverns or shops with an independent access from the main street. At the end of 2014 they proceed to the complete excavation of the Casa Norte, with a very positive result both at a research level and at documenting remains and structures. It was found a little treasure of 376 silver coins inside one of the taverns, which currently is under study. While they work on these results you can imagine how the Casa Norte could have been following this link: http://www.redpatrimonia.com/visitavirtual/85-arocheturobriga 4.4.7. La Casa de la Columna (The House of the Column) This house is partially excavated, it is possible to identify nine large rooms arranged around an open central area. During the years of occupation of the building (between the middle of the 1th century and the beginning of the 3th century) there were different constructional phases identified by the presence of new structures and by the changes in the building techniques. Figura 25. La Casa de la Columna (The House of the Column) Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) Some of the rooms were dedicated to craftsmanship and storing. Several farm objects have been found inside; mattock and pickaxe, big containers and amphorae and dolia. Though we do not have the complete ground plan of the building, the column kept must have belonged to an atrium or peristylium. 4.4.8. The Campus Martius It is a large enclosure of 60 x 65 meters. It was built in Flavian times (69-96), It has a single access gate at the western flank and it is reinforced in its inside with a set of pillars regularly placed at an approximate distance of 6.50 meters. Several rooms have been excavated at the southwestern corner. -27- Vázquez Franco, Francisco Figura 26. The Campus Martius Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) Though the function of the enclosure is uncertain, it is considered to be a Campus Martius. Generally, they were intended for the meeting of the comitia, the military or gymnastic exercises and public ceremonies required by law to be outside the sacred enclosure of the city (pomerium). People met in these places to vote laws, choose magistrates, review troops, and proceed to carry out the census or the ritual purification (lustrum), as Vitruvius comments. 4.4.9. Virtual Reconstruction Inside the Capel of Saint Mamés, the city council of Aroche keeps open a permanent exhibition about the forum of the city of Turobriga. Made by the archaeology Department of the University of Huelva it explains the history of this archaeological site. As well as the investigations made to interpret this Roman setting of the 1th century, it recreates with images a virtual reconstruction of the public square or forum. Figura 27. Virtual Reconstruction Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) Some consecutive excavation campaigns have already been made but Turobriga started to be exhumed in the year 1996. It was from 2004 when a general project of systematic investigation, in coordination with the University Huelva, was initiated, which allowed the permanent exhibition. -28- TFG-TUR. NATURAL AREAS The declaration by the law 4/89 of the Natural Park of Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche and of the Natural Sites of Sierra de Pelada, Riviera del Aserrador and Peñas de Aroche acknowledges the environmental value of the region of Sierra de Huelva. More specifically, the value of the native wooded formations, the meadows, the riverbank spaces and the traditional agricultural landscapes existing in this territory. Aroche is located within the Natural Park Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. It has the second most extensive municipal area in the province of Huelva, with 49.844 hectares. Aroche is located in the westernmost area of Sierra Morena, with a maximum height 712 meters in the Picos de Aroche. Apart from the Natural Park Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, it has two other protected areas, the Natural Sites of Sierra Pelada y Ribera Del Asarrador and Las Peñas. In the municipal area we can find immense meadows of holm oaks and cork oaks, some hectares of olive grove and a huge expanse of forest with pine trees and eucalyptuses. The riverbanks of the Chanza and the Alcazaba River run through the area drawing beautiful landscapes until flowing into the Guadiana. The meadow is the catalytic element of the relationship between man and this environment. Livestock is the main activity of the area. The mountain forest has allowed the survival of vegetation of great ecological interest and also of animal endangered species, such as the black vulture and the black stork. Birds of prey such as eagle and kestrel are also found. 4.5.1. Natural Park of Sierra de Aracena Y Picos de Aroche It is located in the westernmost area of Sierra Morena, in the north of the province of Huelva. The Park occupies a surface of 186.872 hectares distributed among 28 municipalities of the Sierra de Huelva. It is crossed by a fluvial network collected in three hydrographic basins: the one of the Guadalquivir (Riverbank of Huelva), the one of the Guadiana (Caliente, Mútigas, Ingenio) and the one of the Odiel (Riverbank of Linares, Riverbank of Santa Ana). Figura 28. Natural Park of Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Fuente: ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) -29- Vázquez Franco, Francisco Poplar groves, pine forest of Corsican pine and Stone pine and eucalyptuses are other foreign species that have replaced the original native forest. This is mainly composed of holm oaks, accompanied by cork oaks and gall oaks at the riverside. There are also bushes of kermes oaks, wild figs and sarsaparillas. In the meadows of Cala and Aroche there are excellent specimens of gall oaks, relics of old forests. Only in some enclaves, like Cerro Del Castaño, we can find some scattered oak groves of turkey oaks or pubescent oaks, a species very rare because of its use as a source of firewood in the last decades. Among the species of birds of prey that regularly nest in the park are the black stork, the Golden eagle and the lesser kestrel. The meadows of holm oaks and cork oaks provide the habitat to species like wild cat, genet, fox, Stone marten, and others of great hunting value like wild boar or deer, reintroduced during the last years. Here buzzard, back and red kites and black vulture nest. This region of Sierra Morena keeps in its villages a cultural heritage of great value. In Aroche there are prehistoric remains: dolmens and menhirs known as the “Piedras Del Diablo” (Devil Stones). The Castle of Cortegana and the fortresses of Cumbres Mayores, Aroche, and Cumbres de San Bartolomé are an important architectonic legacy of previous age, as well as a little mosque of the 10Th century in Almonaster la Real. 4.5.2. Natural Sites of Sierra Pelada y Rivera del Aserrador Located in the foothills of the Sierra de Aracena of Huelva, the Natural Site of Sierra Pelada y Rivera Del Aserrador stretches over an approximate surface of 12.200 hectares in the municipal areas of Aroche, Cortegana, Rosal de la Frontera and Almonaster la Real. It concentrates the biggest Andalusian colony of black vultures and the most important one in Europe, which caused its declaration as protected area in 1989 and as Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA) (Zone of Special Protection for Birds) in 1990. Apart from the colony of black vultures the presence of endangered species such as the shorttoed snake eagle, booted eagle, Eurasian eagle-owl or black stork is also very important. Among the mammals wild cat, mongoose and wild boar, apart from otter in the main water courses. Figura 29. The thicket bushes, the mixed meadows of holm oaks and cork oaks, the riverbank woodlands and the plantations of the pines and eucalyptuses are the main vegetation formations of the natural site, with a minor presence of an olive groves, fruit trees and herbaceous crops. The exploitation of the mountains is the main economic resort of this area, characterized by a scarce human population. Though the activities that are developed inside the park site have reduced the reproduction level of black vulture, compared to other breeding places of the Iberian Peninsula, its population has substantially increased since the seventies. The top of these hills was historically dedicated to cereal sowing, to goats pasturing and to the production of eucalyptuses, being a terrain rough and of harvested soils. 4.5.3. Peñas de Aroche This area of medium elevations occupies about 700 hectares of the municipal area of Aroche, and it is very rough in its middle part. Geomorphologically highlights the ravines and washouts formed due to the outcrops of acidic rock, mainly granite, which form a batholith. Figura 30. Peñas de Aroche Fuente: ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) The forest cover presents great alterations due to reforestation, though big formations of thickest of type rockrose and heather, home to many different species of wildlife, are kept. 4.6. WHERE TO EAT Aroche, like other villages of the region of Sierra de Huelva has a special climate. This fact provides great quality to the products derived of the Iberian pig. It is a mandatory appointment in your visit to Aroche to taste the pig derived products. Ham, shoulder, loins or good grilled meat are delicacies for the best palates. You can taste these products within the city center, in bars and taverns or you can do it in the two restaurants that are next to the road A-road 433 Seville-Lisbon up by the accesses to Aroche. -31- Vázquez Franco, Francisco Figura 31. Where to eat Fuente: Ayuntamiento de Aroche (www.aytoaroche.es) The most typical dishes of the gastronomy of Aroche are the sopa de peso (traditional soup that was made the day they weighed the pigs), liquor sausages, smoked pork sausage rice or winter gazpacho, apart from other varieties of pig products. In mushroom season tasty dishes are elaborated, mainly the gurumelo (used for many stews) and the tana or homemade pig´s trotters. 4.7. WHERE TO SLEEP Aroche offers the possibilities of staying in the city center, within the historic-artistic centre or next to the beautiful natural sites that the municipality has. Any of these accommodations will allow you to enjoy all the historical, archaeological and natural resources of Aroche: Walk through the Natural Park or its settings, see the ruins of the Roman City of Turobriga, visit the historic castle and feel the medieval age, immerse oneself in the medieval religious construction, etc… Figura 32.
