Our journal, “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura”, founded in 2010, is an initiative of the Research Group HUM–632 of the University of Seville and its objective is the sharing and debating of research within architecture. This six–monthly scientific publication, in paper and digital format, publishes original works that have not been previously published in other journals. The article selection process consists of a double blind system involving two external reviewers, following the usual protocols for serial scientific publications. The titles, summaries, key words and full text of articles are also published in English. “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura” presents a clear, easy and flexible structure. It deals with all the subjects relating to the theory and the practise of the architectural project. The different “open themes” that compose our editorial line are sources for the conjunction of diverse investigations. The journal is directed toward architects, students, researchers and professionals related to the planning and the accomplishment of the architectural work. EXTERNAL ANONYMOUS PEER REVIEW. When the Editorial Board of the magazine has verified that the article fulfils the standards relating to style and content indicated in the instructions for authors, the article will be sent to two anonymous experts, within the specific field of architectural investigation and critique, for a double blind review. The Director of the magazine will communicate the result of the reviewers’ evaluations, and their recommendations, to the authors by electronic mail, to the address used to send the article. The Director will communicate the result of the review (publication without changes; publication with minor corrections; publication with significant corrections; its publication is not advisable), as well as the observations and comments of the reviewers, to the main author,. If the manuscript has been accepted with modifications, the authors will have to resubmit a new version of the article, addressing the requirements and suggestions of the external reviewers. If they wish, the authors can also send a letter to the Editorial Board, in which they will indicate the content of the modifications of the article. The articles with significant corrections can be sent to Advisory and/or Scientific Board for verification of the validity of the modifications made by the author. ETHICS STATEMENT ON PUBLICATION AND BAD PRACTICES PROYECTO, PROGRESO ARQUITECTURA (PPA) makes a commitment to the academic community by ensuring the ethics and quality of its published articles. As a benchmark, our journal uses the Code of Conduct and Good Practices which, for scientific journals, is defined for editors by the PUBLICATION ETHICS COMMITTEE (COPE). Our journal thereby guarantees an appropriate response to the needs of readers and authors, ensuring the quality of the published work, protecting and respecting the content and integrity of the articles. The Editorial Board will publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when necessary. In compliance with these best practices, PPA has published the arbitration system that is followed for the selection of articles as well as the evaluation criteria to be applied by the anonymous, external peer–reviewers. PPA keeps these criteria current, based solely on the scientific importance, the originality, clarity and relevance of the presented article. Our journal guarantees the confidentiality of the evaluation process at all times: the anonymity of the reviewers and authors; the reviewed content; the reasoned report issued by the reviewers and any other communication issued by the editorial, advisory and scientific boards as required. Equally, the strictest confidentiality applies to possible clarifications, claims or complaints that an author may wish to refer to the journal’s committees or the article reviewers. PROYECTO, PROGRESO ARQUITECTURA (PPA) declares its commitment to the respect and integrity of work already published. For this reason, plagiarism is strictly prohibited and texts that are identified as being plagiarized, or having fraudulent content, will be eliminated or not published in PPA. The journal will act as quickly as possible in such cases. In accepting the terms and conditions expressed by our journal, authors must guarantee that the article and the materials associated with it are original and do not infringe copyright. The authors will also have to warrant that, in the case of joint authorship, there has been full consensus of all authors concerned and that the article has not been submitted to, or previously published in, any other media. SUMMARY This study presents a cross-disciplinary examination of the Atrium of the Alhambra, a testing ground for reflection on aspects relating to heritage, landscape and architecture. The Atrium of the Alhambra is the result of an International Architecture Competition for adapting a space outside the walls of the monument for public visits. The project involves a series of critical reflections on contemporary architectural interventions around a historic monument following the line of thought set by Torres Balbás in the restorations of the Alhambra, aiming to reintegrate the monument into the landscape by linking gardens, archaeology and architecture. These ideas were at the heart of the debate on restoration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, inspired by the use made of vegetation by Giacomo Boni in the archaeological interventions on the Roman Forums. The study aims to analyse the Atrium project in terms of the critical discourse on interventions for restoring landscape carried out in the Alhambra during the 20th century in order to interpret memory and identity within this heritage context based on a series of gardens and courtyards which are a prolongation of the monument and its history.

A REFLECTION ON MODERN GARDENS IN THE CONSERVATION OF THE NASRID MONUMENT AND ITS SURROUNDINGS Juan Domingo Santos (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7504-591) Carmen Moreno Álvarez (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3764-1464) from Classical texts and the paintings of Pompeii or by planting rows of cypresses in Villa Adriana to recompose the porticos missing beside the Pecile wall. Boni even advocated the creation of nurseries with traditional plants to accompany the life of the monument8. In his book Flora Palatina. Vegetazione e archeologia9 he showcased the qualities of vegetation for the physical and environmental preservation of archaeological remains in the restoration of monuments. These ideas, along with the archaeological stratification principles he promoted, are a point of reference in monumental conservation prior to restoration charters. It is very likely that the proposals for landscape reintegration espoused by Torres Balbás in the Alhambra may be found in the ideas of Flora dei monumenti10, with the monumental conservation he may have learned from restoration interventions underway on a trip to Italy in 1926. Upon his return to the Alhambra, he put his own stamp on it by relating this to a concept idea of the Granada gardens of the nearby neighbourhood of the Albayzín11. Whereas in the Roman Forum the “historic” vegetation from Classical texts and paintings was used to recompose the ruin, in the Alhambra the aim was to evoke the garden of al-Ándalus with refined learned interpretations of the popular Granada carmen, mirroring a garden halfway between agricultural and leisure space, and its significance in collective imagery. FROM THE GARDEN OF AL-ÁNDALUS TO THE CARMEN IN GRANADA The interpretations of the garden of al-Ándalus and the use of vegetation which Torres Balbás was faced with in the repristini of the monument came to be an exercise in the creation and updating of the “historic” gardens of the Alhambra, with a repertoire of interpretations with varying degrees of accuracy, depending on the survival of archaeological remains and their state of conservation12. In the intervention carried out in the Partal gardens in 1924 -greatly influential in the Atrium-, what can now be seen is an enigmatic location transformed into a garden with pools, flowers and trees on terraced platforms coexisting with fragments of palace architectures and archaeological remains13. The new garden incorporates traceries and stairs with pergolas with vegetation, low walls, terraces, pools and small canals with flowing water, cobble and brick paving alongside the geometrical outlines of boxwood hedges with low trees (khakis and pomegranate) and other local bushes which recompose the historical organisation of this space. The result is an archaeological garden subtly inspired by certain elements from the tradition of gardens in Granada and the proposals of J. C. Nicolas Forestier14, whose reflections on the past of Islamic gardens were interpretations of the art of gardens in Andalusia and Morocco, influenced by architectural regionalism. As these operations show, interventions in the Partal aimed to shape a historic garden structured into terraces following a system of plant codes and using materials in paving and walls to enable a highly landscape-oriented interpretation of this space, something between nature, archaeology and the evocation of lost architecture15 (figure 4). The gardens built by Torres Balbás in the Alhambra go back to a search for harmony with the remains of the past and the memory of places as centres for thought and activity, an awareness linking with the architectural culture of the time and the ideas of such authors as Ferdinand Bac in his gardens in Menton and Les Colombiéres (1925)16. Artist José María Rodríguez-Acosta based his idea of the white carmen (1916-1930) on the hill of the Alhambra, on the construction of a garden for his own enjoyment, with an eclectic design rooted in certain autochthonous issues of local gardening tradition, as well as some from the Classical world. These are all free interpretations of a regionalist Mediterranean garden tinged by influences which move to and fro from different places and interests. Torres Balbás’ interventions in the Alhambra were geared towards the preservation of the monument following the “scientific” propositions of Italian restoration at the time, taking subtle and learned inspiration from the tradition of gardens in al- Ándalus and the carmen in Granada (figure 5). These elements of reference for gardening in Granada in the early 20th century are linked to the tradition of the gardens of al-Ándalus and are essential to understanding the modern interventions in the gardens of the Alhambra from the 1950s on. In turn, in the Atrium these references to historic gardens are linked to the orchards with orange and mulberry trees around the monument, forming a mixed garden which was extremely common in the Islamic world of al-Ándalus. The coexistence of orchards and gardens made it possible to combine aesthetic relationships with those characteristics of an undeveloped agriculture in spaces for leisure and walking. This way of combining pavilions for rest and enjoyment with aromatic ornamental flowers, fruit trees with water and spaces of shade characteristic of Islamic almunias or orchards, was used in the garden terraces of the Atrium, designed as a continuum to the gardens of the Generalife and as a prolongation of the orange groves in terraces and irrigation channels of adjoining territories with the aim of adapting the new accesses to the monument in the 1990s17. This new system of terraces with gardens and walls integrated into the terrain accommodates the new programmes for public visits to the Atrium. The result is a pairing of architecture and garden made up of walls and vegetation distributed throughout the topography based on the existing elements and trees, adapting the image of the intervention to the old agricultural terraces of the Generalife, located on vantage point platforms by the walls of the fortified complex18 (figures 6 and 7). DOI http://dx.doi.org/10.12795/ppa.2020.i21.08 This study aims to analyse the cultural and landscape relationship proposed in the Atrium of the Alhambra project, in the context of the intervention on the modern garden in this restoration. The incorporation of land to expand the space for visitors from the first third of the 20th century transformed the Alhambra into a research laboratory for the “historic” garden of al-Ándalus and its interpretations, and the designs of gardens and courtyards of the Atrium and their continuity with the monument and its history have been covered by this debate and discussion. The Atrium of the Alhambra project arose from the International Architecture Competition promoted by the Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife, in which architects Álvaro Siza Vieira and Juan Domingo Santos were awarded first place in 2010. The aim of this competition was to reform the current visitor reception area, adapting it to the new needs and demands of the monument. This was to be done by reorganising the current spaces and services through programmes which were to improve conditions for visitors from the general public, along with others from cultural and administrative programmes. The theme proposed in the competition was the insertion of a new building, the Atrium of the Alhambra, outside the walls of the monumental complex, a space with little structure due to the transformations undergone by this historic agricultural space throughout the 20th century, designed to adapt it to tourist visits1. The competition call proposes the creation of a “garden plan” to develop the programmes for new access to the monument taking advantage of the different levels in the topography2. The main issue, beyond the organisation of a complex programme, was that of identifying the nature of this “garden plan” and the relationships it was to establish with the monument and its history. A series of questions emerge from the strictly architectural proposal, placing it within the critical discourse of restoration and contemporary intervention seen from the concept of landscape3 (figure 1). The modern history of the monument shows that the approach of architecture to this historic location has always taken place through the garden, a UNESCO Asset of Cultural Interest. This heritage aspect of the garden, recorded in the 1981 Florence Charter, highlights its artistic values and social public interest, based on authenticity and integration into the location and its history. It is obvious that the interventions in the Alhambra in the 20th century were inspired by the monument’s “historic” garden and the identities of the territory. This can be seen from the actions of architects Leopoldo Torres Balbás and Francisco Prieto-Moreno within the monumental complex4, and more recently, that of the Austrian Vass-Nigts-Hubmann5 team, which has recovered the Alhambra surroundings as a space for growing fruit trees, as it was originally. This project was very sensitive to the historic memory of this landscape, but is incomplete at the point it meets the walls of the Alhambra where the Atrium is located (figure 2). The main aim of the competition, beyond the merely functional propositions it was to provide a response to, consisted in establishing how to tackle the approach to architecture from an earlier time in order to reach an agreement with the work of the past and its transformations. The winning proposal followed the line of Ruskin’s opposition to restoration, searching for some degree of “harmony of time” between the construction of the past and the current time of the tourist visit, without having to introduce discontinuity into the material, form or spaces, and defending the importance of time in monuments6. These arguments were driven by the eternal debate between architectures from different times, which the winning project resolved with the formal, volumetric and material continuum of architecture and the surrounding landscape of the Alhambra, integrating pre-existing elements and recovering the gardens and agricultural memory of the land in which it is located, coexisting with the new uses geared towards tourism. FLORA DEI MONUMENTI This idea of landscape reintegration through interlinking of architecture and garden for the restoration intervention of the monumental site had already been proposed by Torres Balbás, as well as by other authors in Italy, most notably archaeologist and architect Giacomo Boni in the late 19th century and by the architect Antonio Muñoz early in the 20th century. In addressing the design and management of vegetation in archaeological sites -the “use of green” as it was knownthey all aimed to make the recovery of decontextualized archaeological structures more pleasant7. In a way, this vision of a garden between constructions and ruins, as promoted in restoration theories, was in line with the original idea of an Alhambra whose architecture aspired to become the garden of the earthly paradise in all its manifestations (figure 3). Giacomo Boni’s actions were not limited exclusively to archaeological excavation and architectural restoration. He used the “flora”, incorporating it into the monument influenced by the landscape of romantic ruin and the role of plants in the abandoned historic buildings and ruins of the past. In 1895 he began to work on Flora dei monumenti, a series of proposals based on the use of vegetation to preserve and protect monumental structures, and to present archaeological remains in a more cohesive context. He also used plants and trees to evoke absent architectures, recomposing missing volumes with mass vegetation. In short, archaeological sites became aesthetic scenarios which could be recomposed by using plants in keeping with locations and their history. This is what he did with the inclusion of “historic” vegetation in the early archaeological excavations of the Roman Forum based on information obtained

These had been started in the first third of the 20th century in the gardens of the Generalife by Torres Balbás and Prieto-Moreno, who adapted wide spaces, expanding them for public visits with designs inspired by the gardens of Granada. In the Jardín de la Rosaleda (1931), Torres Balbás created a maze of closed geometrical shapes inside which all sorts of rose varieties were planted, surrounded by cypress walls whose topiaries evoked the reliefs of the Generalife walls in a free and abstract interpretation somewhere between Oriental and Western gardens. The later actions by Prieto-Moreno in the Jardines Nuevos (1952) of the Generalife also emulated the proposals initiated by Torres Balbás in the neighbouring garden of the Rosaleda, although his work was dedicated to establishing a regionalist garden design in the recovery of certain elements of the gardens of the Alhambra to be found in the popular tradition of the carmen in Granada. His book Los jardines de Granada19 contains photographs and drawings of gardens from cármenes in the Albayzín alongside others in the Alhambra and Generalife, including low fountains, parterres, cobbled areas, fragments of brick paving, trees and pergolas, which have influenced the historic view of this typical Granada garden and the monument. This repertoire of elements immortalised on its pages includes the design of the Jardines Nuevos, which reproduces the cross-shaped design of the patio de la Alberca in the Generalife, with plant walls of cypresses and arches following the topiary of the garden in Granada, alongside pergolas, low fountains and pools of water imbued with a neo Islamic aesthetic. The Jardines Altos del Generalife and the Jardín de la Rosaleda and the Jardines Nuevos became a testing ground with interpretations, some freer than others, of the “historic” garden of the Alhambra, using ornamental and aesthetic resources characteristic of the Hispano-Islamic garden and planting species such as jasmine, citron trees, roses, cypresses and orange trees, which had been in the monument garden from its beginnings, to ensure the continuity of interventions while maintaining the identity of the site (figure 8). The adaptation of the spaces for tourist visits led to the first ideas on the restoration of the garden of the Alhambra and its incorporation into the architectural context, in keeping with a more conservative and museum-oriented discourse in the interventions carried out in the courtyards of the palaces. There was a more eclectic and looser interpretation in the rest of gardens which had been newly built or where existing areas had been restored, such as the Generalife and the gardens of the Partal, Mexuar or in the calle Real Alta in the Secano. Like the new gardens by Torres Balbás and Prieto-Moreno in the Generalife, the Atrium is designed to incorporate spaces outside the outer walls of the complex for the visiting public. This is part of a series of actions started in the late 20th century with the intervention by Vass-Nigts-Hubmann, which aimed to design a space integrating the surrounding agricultural land with the monumental complex and its gardens (figure 9). The key to this lay in establishing relationships between the “historic” garden of the palaces, the new gardens open for tourist visitors in the Partal and Generalife, and the orchards and canal structures added in the 1990s for the new accesses to the monument, establishing a correlation between water and agricultural archaeology, making use of the local natural resources and modern interpretations of the garden. The result is a landscape that lies somewhere between garden and orchard and is characteristic of the articulation space in which the Atrium is inserted in front of the outer walls of the complex. This idea of mixed gardens was already found in the Granada carmen, whose name, derived from the Arabic karm (vine), owed much to the legacy of the world of al-Ándalus in the use of water, vegetation and architecture organised in a harmonious context with different types of plants. In the same year as the publication of Los jardines de Granada and the construction of the Jardines Nuevos of the Generalife (1952), a group of architects, including Prieto-Moreno, travelled to Granada for a meeting with the Dirección General de Arquitectura to debate the future of Spanish architecture. Interest in the Alhambra was based on the fact that this construction of the past was “a store of essential architecture”20 far removed from historicist considerations. In it, the ideals of modern organicist trends advocating attention to landscape and the use of traditional materials could be found. The result of the work sessions during this meeting was the publication of Manifiesto de la Alhambra, which compiled the “values” of this heritage complex in four categories, among which it is worth noting the incorporation of the garden and the relationship between architecture and nature21. The Atrium is an exercise in interpreting and updating these “values”, which Manifiesto revealed during the work sessions, in line with the discourse initiated a few years earlier in Los invariantes castizos de la arquitectura española22 (1948) by Chueca Goitia. This work attempted to ensure that some characteristic values of Spanish history were seen as points of reference for the Spanish modern architecture of the time, and Manifiesto was a fine example of these ideas. Although the cultural context of Invariantes and Manifiesto differs notably from that of the Atrium, they share the intention of calling for modern architecture “but with roots”23. In the case of the Atrium this is more a way to come into contact with the monument and its history, rather than a call to practise architecture in its time. The “sincere” use of the material, the organisation of spaces and the relationship between architecture, courtyards and gardens -all fundamental aspects in the configuration of the Alhambra and found in the architecture of the Atriumrepresented this eternal tradition of the monument, defined in Manifiesto as essential “values” of an architecture integrated into nature. THE ATRIUM, A GARDEN IN CONTINUITY WITH HISTORY The recovery interventions in the monument in the last two centuries have been inspired by the ornamental elements of the gardens, especially the Generalife. The Atrium is inserted as a continuation of platforms of these gardens using shade and water courtyards on different levels, as well as panoramic views of the Alhambra, equally structured around high gardens and low gardens (courtyard interiors). This is a group of gardens and courtyards with water and vegetation which welcome visitors in an atmosphere befitting the identity of this place. The initial sketches for the project already showed the positioning of the programmes around a sequence of courtyards with water and an existing wall to guide the circulation of visitors from inside the building to the square from which the monument is accessed (Plaza de la Alhambra). In some way, this interpretation of a garden with water adapted to the topography and preexisting archaeological elements had already been developed by Álvaro Siza in the Santo Domingo de Bonaval park, respecting the structure of orchards, gardens and the convent cemetery to create a park that was open to the public, with water, tree-lined avenues and historic ruins, forming a historic space in the city of Santiago (figure 10). In the Atrium, there is a wide and varied repertoire of elements establishing a relationship with the courtyards of the palaces, the gardens of the Generalife, and the ruins of the Partal and Secano. In the modern uses and programmes of the Atrium the interpretation of water, the use of material, gardens planted in successive terraces on the landscape, flower-covered pergolas and a string of courtyard spaces gradually express topics directly referencing the universe of gardens and architecture, with specific studies which propose identical solutions to those of the Alhambra, such as the pool of the Patio de los Arrayanes, interpreted in the new pools of the low gardens of the Atrium with a layout which faithfully reproduces the organisation and movement of water in the Moorish palace. Thanks to the use of water in this space the pool levels are balanced and kept clean to act as a mirror to architecture, while refreshing and cooling the courtyard and adjoining rooms. Whereas the Patio de los Arrayanes is supplied by the Acequia Real, the Atrium is supplied with water from the irrigation canal for the nearby orchards, which fills the three water pools around which the courtyards are structured, organising routes and itineraries24 (figure 11). These phenomenological and sensory interpretations also extend to technical matters, and water and the natural resources of the physical surroundings of the Alhambra become sources of energy to resolve the building’s energy demands. The use of the forest’s biomass and the geothermal nature of the hillside soil are used to obtain heat, while the water from canals, pools and streams help to cool. It is clear that in the Atrium there is a fascination with the universe enveloping the Alhambra and shown in many details from it which are interpreted and updated. This is therefore observed in the sequence of courtyards and terraces with pools laid out in the new intervention on the monument walls, a literal reference to the staggered gardens with water pools in the Partal which descend to a belvedere over the Albayzín, like the Patio de la Alberca in the Generalife, between terraced orchards, with trees and plants open to the landscape, and the new Generalife gardens open to the public. In other cases, the references are more abstract or link back to certain details of the restoration of the archaeological ruins, such as the bases of walls of houses and palaces emerging from the soil in the Secano area, an unstructured but highly suggestive territory given their relationship to the landscape. These fragments are evoked in the terraces of the Atrium thanks to the creation of a topography with low walls and water running below large pergolas of wisteria and Virginia creeper, transformed into spaces where visitors can rest and relax overlooking the walls and towers of the Alhambra. The formal and material continuity of some resources of Nasrid architecture and other interventions of modern restoration in the garden show the constant presence of an Alhambra interpreted in different levels and scales (figures 12 and 13). The material architecture of the Atrium is decomposed among gardens, walls and courtyards with water. Some degree of spatial complexity is reached through small elements in an intervention which echoes recognisable locations in the monument. Like Nasrid palaces prolonging spaces to what is known as the “prado” or wild exterior gardens by the walls, the architecture with the water courtyards and the tree-filled garden of Plaza de la Alhambra are articulated through a wall hanging over one of the pools, ensuring that there is no discontinuity between the limits of the constructions and the garden. The solution is also reminiscent of an Alhambra which arrives from other places where this inspiration can be shared from a garden between walls and water through the Fuente de los Amantes or Luis Barragán’s pool of the Arboledas, a sheet of water suspended in the landscape in which we recognise the Patio de los Mirtos of the old Nasrid palaces, which inspired Barragán following his trip to the Alhambra in 1924. Barragán defines the Patio de los Mirtos (or Arrayanes), as a place which “contained everything an ideal garden should possess, nothing less than the whole universe”25. References to the monument also appear in the recreations that the Atrium makes of the Alhambra, courtyards whose names, regardless of use, are associated with plants or an idea of nature (courtyard of the myrtles, courtyard of the happy garden, courtyard of the pool, courtyard of the Sultana’s cypress or courtyard of the fig tree), finding parallels with other names in the Atrium: courtyard of water (impluvium), courtyard of ivy or courtyard of cypresses. Each courtyard of the low gardens of the Atrium is in itself an individual universe, establishing specific relationships with uses and itineraries. Water, nature and garden host contemporary programmes in a rational free floor plan with closed rooms around courtyards bordered by walls and vegetation, where a series of different gardens with water, plants and trees coexist26 (figures 14 and 15). This garden space, conceived with orchards of orange trees and aromatic jasmine and orange blossom under shaded pergolas, shares its existence with the Alhambra and its architecture. There is an aspect to be noted: the naturalisation of the walls and constructions of the Atrium through water pools and the shade of the trees and plants projected over them throughout the day, creating an atmosphere where the surface perception of architecture plays a key role. The texture and expressive aspect of the walls and towers imprint in this growing architecture a patina comparable to that left on material over time. Author’s translation. of the Alhambra and the irrigation canals is achieved thanks to the brutalist use of an “Alhambra concrete”, specially prepared to transform with the passing of time. This use of the material opens up a path for interpretation which includes phenomenological aspects in continuity with the monument, also observed in the use of water and brick and improved compacted earth paving from the Generalife. These materials express the desire to naturalise intervention through the interaction of the material with its environment and progressive deterioration, just as the imposing mass of the outer walls and towers of the monument changes colour and its materials crumble through the effect of rain, following Ruskin’s idea of achieving a specific beauty forged over time which comes to envelop the ruin. CONCLUSIONS The Atrium of the Alhambra project is the result of a study on contemporary architectural intervention on this Nasrid monument following its modern history and the conservation actions from the early 20th century based on the garden, which have their origin in the archaeological proposals of Flora dei monumenti by Giacomo Boni. The Atrium and the modern interventions carried out since it was opened to visiting public share a common interpretation of the “values” of the garden of al-Ándalus evoked from learned interpretations and the regionalist gazes of the Granada carmen, which maintained the essence of the lost Hispano-Moorish gardens. The Atrium continues this tradition but innovates with the use of proposals for the “eclectic and elastic” restoration used by Torres Balbás in the monument’s gardens to approach the construction of a newly designed architecture. The operations for evoking or replacing material in the modern stratigraphic restoration of the Partal and Generalife, or the use of certain values from the “historic” gardens of the Nasrid palaces for the archaeological and landscape reintegration of the territory, are examples of this learning which was transferred from restoration to the architecture as seen from the garden and surrounding agriculture. Modern language and the vernacular are present in the Atrium to “transform the differential aspects of each place into categories”27, a process shared today and throughout the history of the monument based on the continuity of ideas, form and materials. This continuity finds in the garden a meeting place of different times and eras with the utopian vision of a place whose architecture aspires to become a garden. 1. Both were conservation architects for the monument: Leopoldo Torres Balbás from 1923 to 1936 and Francisco Prieto-Moreno from 1936 to 1979. The conservation work they carried out involved both the architecture and garden. 5. In the early 1990s a competition was held for the adaptation of the terrain outside the walls which extends to the cemetery of San José, in order to resolve access for tourists from the city’s southern ring road. The built project recovers the memory of this agricultural land with terraces of orchards of orange trees, mulberries and irrigation canals, to which carparks were to be added. The use of vegetation in this restoration resulted in different types of garden. The architect Antonio Muñoz used vegetation as a separation screen between the city and the monument or to articulate the relationship between both. He also incorporated plant elements into the architecture through microsurgery operations, as in the case of the temple of Venus in Roma, resorting to boxwood hedges and cypresses to recompose columns and other architectural elements. 8. Giacomo Boni proposed the construction of nurseries beside restoration spaces in order to ensure the maintenance and preservation of the plant legacy in historic gardens as testimonial. He was the author of “Viridarium Palatinum”, an experimental botanic orchard built on the Palatine Hill, the oldest hill on which Rome was founded, containing a representation of the classical flora described by Virgil and in the paintings of Pompeii. 9. The garden of the Albayzín in Granada in some way contained the values of the garden of al-Ándalus, hence Torres Balbás considered it to be a point of reference for the new gardens he created in the Alhambra.
