Active intervention to contribute to the advancement of SDGS in the faculty of tourism and finance at the university of Seville

THE TEACHING STAFF AS AGENTS OF CHANGE María del Pilar Díaz-Cuevas y Reyes Manuela González-Relaño U. de Sevilla (Spain) This work is part of a teaching innovation project of the Faculty of Tourism and Finance of the University of Seville, "Active intervention programme to contribute to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Faculty of Tourism and Finance", funded by the IV Teaching Plan of the University of Seville. Climate change is currently one of the main threats that human beings must face. Despite this, there are many climate change deniers, who promote myths, beliefs or claims that are not supported by scientific evidence and which, in some cases, are used to minimise or deny the reality of climate change and its impacts. Statements such as "climate change does not exist", "climate change has always existed" or "a couple of degrees is nothing", among others, come not only from influential personalities but sometimes from political institutions themselves, which can have repercussions and confuse citizens in general and university teachers and students in particular, both of whom are called upon to be decision-makers in the near future. This work is framed within the context of the teaching innovation project "Active intervention programme to contribute to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the Faculty of Tourism and Finance", as well as in the actions carried out within the framework of this project for the advancement in the fulfilment of the SDG, specifically in SDG 13 "Climate action”. The general objective is to analyse the existing gaps in the university teaching staff of the Faculty of Tourism and Finance, so as to provide them with the knowledge and scientific basis to dismantle the myths and assume the existing realities of climate change. To this end, an anonymous survey was carried out among 17 lecturers who teach on the bachelor’s degree in Tourism and the bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting, belonging to various departments. This survey collected statements read in the press or heard from different personalities. It was possible to verify the existence of gaps in knowledge and some confusion on the part of the teaching staff when it comes to distinguishing between myths and realities linked to climate change.
