Abstract

Material and methods: 82 adolescent swimmers (46 men and 36 women; 14.34 ± 2.17 years, height 164.23 ± 12.1cm, weight 55.55 ± 13.18 kg) participated in the study. The times in 50 meter front crawl were associated with various field and laboratory tests. The following fitness variables were evaluated; handgrip test, standing broad jump, isometric force crawl, knee extension test and measurement of body composition (height and weight). In adittion, time to run 30 meters and oxygen consumption (Course-Navette) were also measured. The technique was evaluated subjectively by a trained coach. The correlation between personal best time (PBT) 50 meters and the other variables was studied through a age adjusted partial correlations. The variables that determined performance were examined using multiple linear regressions. Results: PBT is mainly associated with time to run 30 meters regardless of gender, also, in males, PBT is associated with forearm muscle strength and anthropometric factors (height) and in women with the dynamic strength of the lower limbs. The technique, only seems to be related to performance in this age when male and female are taken together. The performance in swimming during the juvenile stage in short distances, is mainly determined by fitness and anthropometry related aspects, while the technique does not appear to be decisive at this stage. INTRODUCTION Swimming is an individual sport that requires skill, motivation and effort. In Spain it is the thirteenth sport with the largest number of federal records [1]. Competitive swimming has a long history and is currently one of the largest important Olympic sports, with sixteen events. Several aspects differentiate swimming from other sports such as the prone position, propulsive forces that are applied against a fluctuant element, simultaneous use of arms and legs for propulsion, water immersion (i.e. controlled respiration) and minimal influence of equipment on performance. Competitive swimmers are suggested to have specific anthropometrical features compared with other athletes, but are nevertheless dependent on physiological adaptations to enhance their performance [2]. Differently to other team sports like soccer or basketball, the selection of future swimmers that can reach success is not based on the subjective opinion of coaches, but on their results. For this reason it is appropriate to carry out studies to determine by scientific tests those swimmers who will be able to have an optimal performance from an early age. To predict sporting performance different models have been proposed [3]. Several studies have determined that handgrip is a valid strength test to assess future performance in adolescent athletes, in sports such as rock climbers [4] handball [5-8], basketball [8, 9], soccer [10], tennis [11] and roller hockey [12]. Focusing on swimming, the handgrip isometric strength test has been associated with performance in young and adult swimmers [3, 13], elite swimmers [14] and talent detection models [15]. It is not only used as a variable to identify swimmers performance, but also as a factor to calculate strength. Handgrip is often used because it is considered a phenotype that reflects physical function in relation to hereditary genes. [16]. It is believed that swimmers with high hereditary body strength will be more likely to meet their highest performance once they become adults. This could be relevant because the strength development is closely related with maturation status [17] and is to a large extent modifiable through training. [18]. It would therefore also be interesting to assess the strength of these athletes with other tests such as isometric knee extension, which has also demonstrated positive relations with performance in sports like soccer [19], roller hockey [12], tennis [20] and volleyball [21, 22]. Nevertheless, both handgrip and knee extension can give an overview of the maximum strength the athlete can perform, but they do not simulate a specific swimming stroke. It is important to evaluate specific strength of certain sports through specific tests, because through general tests we can not describe the specific forces generated by the main muscles involved during the practice of each sport. However, with specific tests we might be able to describe forces that are critical to performance in a particular sport, for example forces generated with the shoulder with internal and external rotation tests [23, 24] important for both tennis and handball players but that are not determinant for soccer players, where isometric knee extension [25] might be a performance determinant. Because of this, we have developed a new test called “isometric crawl force” (ICF), which simulates the motion of swimmers while they are practicing front crawl, although in an isometric way. In addition to strength tests, there are also a series of tests related to other fitness components which might be associated to performance in these ages as aerobic power, velocity and dynamic strength. These components have been assessed with the following field tests; twenty meters shuttle run, velocity 30 meters sprint and standing broad jump, which have been used in other studies with positive results to elucidate the subjects physical condition in [26, 27], handball [5], basketball [28] or similarly in swimming [29]. The choice of these tests in addition to being of low monetary and temporary cost, also aims to reduce the test battery to evaluate and verify the training of swimmers and their improvements across the season. Therefore the aims of this research were; 1) to assess the relation between non-specific tests and performance (handgrip, isometric knee extension and field tests), 2) to assess the relation between a specific strength test and performance (crawl force), 3) to assess the relation between body composition and performance, and 4) to assess how does swimming technique influence these results. METHODS The protocol and research presented in this paper is part of the Randomized Controlled Trial RENACIMIENTO (Repercusión del entrenamiento y la práctica de la natacion sobre el desarrollo metabólico y estructural del hueso en crecimiento. Full design of the project is explained in the methodological paper. [30] 2.1.Participants A total of 82 adolescent swimmers (mean age 14.34  2.17 years) of both sexes participated in the study. All subjects were members of several swimmming clubs and trained for an average 7.85  2.67 hours. They had been training for 9.67  2.27 years before this moment. The volunteers were healthy and did not have any important injuries at the moment of the study that could affect results. 2.2.Ethical committee The study was aproved by the Ethics Committee of Clinical Research from the Government of Aragón (C.I.PI11/0034; CEICA; SPAIN), and will follow the international rules for research with humans, following the Declaration of Helsinki (1964) as revised in 2000 in Edinburgh. Parents or tuthors and adolescents provided written consent. 2.3.Physical activity and general information A structured questionnaire included information about aspects regarding trainning, swim years (SY), swim hours/week (SHW) and other practiced sports and personal aspects, such as birthdate, medicals issues, medication and injuries. 2.4.Laboratory tests Laboratory testing was completed in 2 hours including body composition and strength tests. 2.4.1. Body Composition measurements A portable stadiometer with 2.10m maximum capacity and a 0.1cm error margin (SECA 225, SECA, Hamburg, Germany) was used to measure height. Participants stood with Principales factores que influyen sobre el rendimiento en nadadores adolescentes en la prueba 50 metros estilo crol Elena Pardos Mainer 20 their scapula, buttocks and heels resting against a wall; the neck was held in a natural nonstreched position, the heels were touching each other, the toe tips formed a 45º angle and the head was held straight with the inferior orbital border in the same horizontal plane as the external auditive conduct (Frankfort`s plane). A portable body composition analyzer with a 200kg maximum capacity and a  100g error margin (TANITA BC-418 MA; Tanita Corp., Tokyo, Japan) was used to measure the body mass. Individuals removed shoes and heavy cloths prior to weighing. [31] Body mass index (BMI) was calculated by dividing weight (kg) by squared height (m2) . 2.4.2. Strength measurements Maximum isometric cuadriceps extension strength, knee extension (KE), was measured using a strain gauge (MuscleLab, Force Sensor, Norway) after a 5 min warm-up on a cycle ergometer (Monark 927E, Sweden) with minimal resistence at 60 revmin. Participants were seated on a chair, with an anchorage placed on the distal third of the tibia. This anchorage was connected to a MucleLab gauge that registered the Newtons of isometric force generated during the 6 seconds that subjects were encouraged to perform maximum strength. Each subject performed two discontinuous maximal repetitions with each leg and a minimum of 3 minutes between attempts with the same leg. The best atempt with each leg was selected for further analyses. Maximum isometric forearm strength (HG) was determined with a digital strain-gauge dynamometer (Takei TKK 5401, Takei scientific instruments, Tokyo, Japan) in order to evaluate hand-grip strength. The participants were instructed to exert their maximal grip with the upper limb in extension (right and left hand) in two trials, with brief pauses between each (3minutes). Hand span to perform the test was different for each participant according to their hand size. The dynamometer was placed according to the optimal handgrip span suggested by Ruiz et al. [32]. The best atempt with each hand was selected for further analyses. Maximum isometric shoulder flexion strength, that is our isometric crawl force test (ICF) was measured using a strain gauge (MuscleLab, Force Sensor, Norway). Adolescents were encouraged to performed the maximum isometric strength lying on a fitness bench with one arm extended in an overhead position simulating the downsweep phase of freestyle swimming. Two attemps were performed with each upper limb, with brief pauses between each (3 minutes). In all tests an investigator provided verbal Principales factores que influyen sobre el rendimiento en nadadores adolescentes en la prueba 50 metros estilo crol Elena Pardos Mainer 21 encouragements of maximal efforts. The best atempt with each arm was selected for further analyses. 2.5.Field tests Field tests took place during another day and were performed in the same conditions for all swimmers. Swimming personal best time (PBT) was supplied by trainers. 2.5.1. Fitness Standing Broad Jump (SBJ) was performed in order to test explosive leg power. A two foot take-off and landing were demanded to the participants, allowing them to swing their arms and bend their knees to provide forward drive. Three attempts were allowed. A rest period of 2 minutes was provided between the trials. VO2max was evaluated with the twenty meters shuttle run fitness test, which involves continuous running between two lines 20 meters apart in time to recorded beeps. The rhythm is set by means of audio signals. The initial speed is 8.5 km/h and is increased by 0.5 km/h intervals every minute, each called a stage. Subjects should step behind the 20m cone at the exact time that the audio signal is heard. The test finishes when the subject stops because of fatigue or fails to reach the end cone concurrent with the audio signal on two consecutive occasions. Aerobic capacity was determined using the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), estimated as per Leger equation for subjects (both sex) between 6 to 18 years [33]. 2.5.2. Running Speed time Velocity 30 meters (V30m) was measured through photovoltaic cells, which were separated 30 meters along an indoor football pitch. The protocol has been described else were. [34] 2.5.3. Swimming personal best time Fifty meters personal best time was obtained for each subject’s mark recorded in the swimming Aragon Championship 2013. Crawl technique Crawl technique (CT) was subjectively measured by the trainer of each swimming club. The trainer gave punctuation between 1 and 10, being 1 very bad technique and 10 very good technique. 2.6.Statistical Analyses Data are presented as mean  standard deviation (SD) and were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 15.0 software (SPSS Inc., USA). The studied variables showed a normal distribution studied using Kolmogorov-Smirnov. To identify differences in all the variables among genders, an Independent student ttest was performed. Partial correlations adjusting by age were applied among performance times for 50 meters and all considered parameters (Time 50m, Weight, Height, BMI, CT, ICF, KE, HG, VO2max, V30m, SBJ, SY, SHW, LM and % F) differentiating by gender to find the most important factors to compute multiple regression models. Furtherone, correlated variables were entered in a multiple stepwise regression (Model 1). Model 1 was further adjusted by important confounders: SWH (Model 2 = Model 1 + SHW) and by Age (Model 3 = Model 2 + Age). For all statistical analyses, statistical significance was set at p < .05. 3. RESULTS Descriptive statistics for the total swimming sample are summarized in Table 1. Males were older, heavier, taller and presented higher values of BMI, ICF, KE, HG, VO2max and SBJ and less time in V30m and in 50m than females (all p< 0.05). No differences were found in crawl technique between men and women. When all swimmers were analyzed as a group, partial correlation analysis adjusting by age showed that PBT was correlated with SBJ, V30m, VO2max, HG, ICF, KE, TC, Weight, Height, LM and HW (p<0.05; Table 2). When splitting by gender males showed significant correlations with SBJ, V30m, VO2max, HG, TC, Weight, Height, LM and HW (all p<0.05; Table 2). While females PBT showed correlations with SBJ, V30m and TC. Table 3 shows the association between 50 meters freestyle, fitness and body composition. PBT for all swimmers together was associated to Height, V30m, CT and SBJ; to HG, Height and V30m for male and only to SBJ and V30m for female (all Principales factores que influyen sobre el rendimiento en nadadores adolescentes en la prueba 50 metros estilo crol Elena Pardos Mainer 23 p<0.05; Table 3). Further adjustment by SHW did not modify these associations (table 3). When adjusted by Age, PBT was explained by Height, V30m and CT for all simmers; HG and V30m for male and just SBJ for female. 4. DISCUSSION The major findings of this study are that the performance on 50 meters freestyle is mainly associated with performance on test of running 30 meters velocity independently of gender, besides, in males, it is associated with forearm muscle strength (handgrip) and anthropometrics factors (height) and in females with the dynamic strength of the lower limbs (broad jump). The technique appears to be associated only with performance in this age when swimmers are not splitted by gender. The speed on 30 meters varies in accordance with the type of muscle fiber that swimmers possess. Muscle contraction velocity depends on the proportion of type II muscle fibers [35]. This research focuses on swimming short distance (50 m) events, being type II fibers predominant in this type of events [36] and particularly the type IIb faster contraction. Therefore, the association between performances on 50 meters freestyle and the test of running 30 meters could be due to metabolic and physiological similitude of the effort that is determined by a similarity in muscle type (predominance of type II fibers). The fact that in a subject type I fibers or type II fibers predominate depends on his genetic inheritance. Therefore velocity 30 meters is partly related to genetics. It is the only common variable to both genders, so that having a larger number of type II fibers in muscle of short-distance swimmers could be the key to obtain a better performance. However, specific studies on the subject to corroborate these suggestions are needed. Interestingly, the technique, which is the pattern of movements to be performed and whose primary purpose is saving energy and optimizing the propulsive force, is usually identified as one of the determinant factors of athletic performance. A large number of studies conclude that the swimming technique is the key to performance [37-39]. However, our results suggest that at early ages, technique does not seem to determine performance in males and females separately. In this study, the technique has been assessed subjectively from the appreciation of the coaches, understood as medium technical level that coaches attribute to each of the swimmers. Perhaps a more accurate analysis, even differentiated by gender, analyzing the potential differences in the form Principales factores que influyen sobre el rendimiento en nadadores adolescentes en la prueba 50 metros estilo crol Elena Pardos Mainer 24 of implementation or use of energy, could help to clarify the real influence during this stage of growth. Although is possible the technique does not determine the performance in these stages in that other factors such as anthropometric or physical condition may have greater influence, it is still important to teach it and perfect it in previous stages [39, 40], because it could become a crucial aspect in the future when the physical and fitness characteristics will be equal. Strength seems to be a determinant factor regarding performance, mainly upper limb strength in males and dynamic leg strength in females. The fact that females present higher levels of leg strength influence in performance and males in arm strength could be due to the technical implementation aspects that may differ between genders. There are no corroborating studies, so we would need to assess this hypothesis. In fact, the strength is related to the total number of fibers, their area, strain and percentage of active fibers. Handgrip strength measures the maximum isometric contraction due to bending of the finger joints with maximum voluntary force that the subject is capable of exercise in normal biokinetic [41]. Hand strength could be relevant in the grasp phase and this would explain why the handgrip test is related to performance in males. In fact there are other authors like Geladas et al. who showed that the handgrip is an important parameter for determining the performance of shortdistance swimming [13]. Therefore, to have higher levels of force could be a performance factor in males. In females however, it does not seem to be related, which could be due to the fact that females might generate more propulsion with the lower extremities, as females PBT was associated with higher dynamic lower extremity strength levels. Again a comprehensive patterns technical analysis differentiated by gender could clarify these issues. Height is a performance anthropometric factor in young swimmers, particularly in short distance events [38, 42]. Height has a linear relationship with the swimmer´s size (length of arm) swimmer, being one of the main predictors of performance [43]. This seems to be more important in males than in females at the youthful stage. It could be because males focus their performance in the physical factors, taller, larger, more strength in the upper extremities and therefore greater grasp phase, while in females the height is not an important factor because they focus their performance on the strength of Principales factores que influyen sobre el rendimiento en nadadores adolescentes en la prueba 50 metros estilo crol Elena Pardos Mainer 25 the lower limb, thus having higher or lower height does not affect them as much as males. Definitely it would be the type of technique used by each gender that it would influence the performance, males a technique centered in grasp phase and females focused on propulsion phase, but these ideas also need to be studied. Having a certain level of body fat has sometimes been suggested to present benefits to bouyancy [44, 45] and thereby achieve higher performance, but in this study no association was observed between fat percentage and time 50 meters time, at least in short courses, perhaps in long courses different effects can be observed. Some limitations deserve to be commented. The technique has been measured by 4 different coaches (one coach for each club). However, each coach was provided with a spreadsheet to standardize the observations, in order to judge from a more objective point of view and therefore present less variation from one trainer to another. Nevertheless we know that despite being a subjective assessment, it is determined by an expert in swimming. Specific genetic or morphological aspects, related to muscle fibers were not measured and could help to explain some of the present findings. . However, we think that this study as several positive aspects, like having evaluated a large number of swimmers with high levels of training and with sophisticated methods of strength measurement. Including a combination of body composition, anthropometric and physical fitness variables, differentiating by gender. 5. CONCLUSION The performance in swimming during the juvenile stage in short distances, is mainly determined by fitness and anthropometry related aspects, while the technique does not appear to be decisive at this stage.. Males focus their performance in physical factors (height and strength in upper limbs), while women in the power of the lower extremities (legs dynamic force). It is possible that predominate favorably, being common to both genders, a type of muscle fiber, type IIb more fast-twitch fibers dependent on genetics.
