Our proposals born from the need to provide solutions to the various crises that our planet is experiencing” Vicente Guallart, architect Reflecting on the projects that I have faced in my career as an architect, I have felt attracted to take advantage of the local resources available in the work projects surrounding areas.. Traditionally, the construction sector has used local materials, such as brick, wood, and cork, which resulted in reduced energy costs and environmental impacts. Sustainable construction should be characterized by a balance between the production of materials, their consumption for the construction and/or rehabilitation of buildings, and the use of necessary natural resources. Notwithstanding, it is essential to promote the use of available technical improvements and innovation in the production plants. Replacing the finite natural resources by recycling waste products of different production processes should be one of the main goals to preserve the environment from excessive natural resources-consuming industries. The achievement of these goals requires a clear commitment to reuse and recycle, minimizing all fronts’ transport of raw materials and products, promoting the use of locally available resources. Consequently, there must be an adaptation of the building design to the local climate conditions, as this impacts the users’ quality and thermal comfort. The massive use of materials, such as cement, aluminum, concrete, PVC, and others, has caused a significant increase in energy and environmental costs. The reduction of the building’s environmental impact is achieved using renewable or recycled materials from the biosphere, such as animal or vegetable fibers, wood, and materials with a low industrial processing level to guarantee an adequate structural life cycle. Most of the energy associated with the production of these materials comes from the sun thus reducing the consumption of non-renewable energy and the emissions associated with these materials. With this same perspective of recycling and using local resources, we must aim to rehabilitate existing buildings, encouraging this type of intervention, instead of promoting the excessive construction of new buildings. The reshabilitation ¨0 km¨ positively influences the development of the local economy, generates demand for labor, and preserves traditional building trades and techniques while helping to safeguard each place’s cultural identity. Producing and acquiring local resources also empowers the community, while distance impoverishes it. For this reason, we must target projects that bet on building from local productions and encourage the direct sale of these products from small producers to the consumer or local builders, favoring the economy by consuming local materials and products. The portfolio I am presenting today is not a simple compilation and exhibition of projects carried out during my studies, rather a call to how I approach these projects focused on the immediate environment and how local resources can be incorporated into the buildings and, consequently to the community. If I had to decide where I want to direct my line of work in the near future, without a doubt, it would be in working groups focusing on developing sustainable projects. In fact, the most interesting projects to me and where I would like be involve are those achieving a “0km” project status, because they are more inclusive and prioritizes the use of local materials and techniques, impacting positively in the community. 89 89 SCALES AND APROACH • NEIGHBORHOOD / ´´AN ISLAND IN SANTS´´ • STREET / ´´ONE STREET IN HABANA´´ • SERVICE BUILDING / ´´BADÍA, A COOPERATIVE CITY´´ • HOUSING / ´´ TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE IN RUBÍ´´ • INDUSTRIAL WAREHOUSE / ´´AN EXPERIMENTAL THEATER´´ • TERRITORY / ´´MOLLERUSSA, MOVING BACK TO COUNTRYSIDE´´ FILLING THE EMPTINESS EMPTYING THE FULLNESS PROJECTS 10 11 LOCAL RESOURCES With cities under curfew, uncertainty, and the unprecedented times we live in, it becomes inevitable to reflect if it is right to continue living in saturated cities. It becomes inevitable for many to rethink another way of living and ask ourselves: what if we go back to the countryside? The project “Cohabiting the Countryside” proposes an alternative lifestyle that allows us to reconsider what it is like to live in the countryside using current technologies for building and agriculture and combining them for the community’s best benefit. We chose Mollerussa, a city in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, which has developed around the Urgel channel, with a strong agricultural vocation. The project proposal suggests creating a new set of houses and a new agricultural park, which will allow us to take advantage of all the potentials and local resources that the territory offers by promoting the farm production of Mollerussa and creating a new agricultural landscape. The main agricultural activity proposed is the cultivation of stone fruit (peach trees), deeply rooted in the area and with a close relationship with industries such as Nufri, present in the city. Promoting peach trees’ cultivation will also benefit the local economy by attracting tourists during the flowering season. Proyect collaborators : Jose M. It wil never fail you´´ - Frank Lloyd Wright - The urban proposal of implantation arises from recognizing the disposition of the fields of cultivation, the nearby agricultural industry, the existing green routes, the new planning of Mollerussa, and the current hydrography. Each area of the project is treated differently. According to its section, each parcel’s organization is different by considering its surroundings to main roads, the railway barrier, or more rural areas. In each case, work is done to blur the distinction between areas. Bioclimatic housing units are proposed from a different module typology are generated according to the user profile (temporary and fixed). The execution in dry construction is offered since aluminum is a recyclable material, quickly supplied by local industries nearby, such as Europerfil and Alutherm, to avoid the tremendous environmental impact of constructions in concrete. The first floors combine housing with open spaces related to the closest crops and incorporate movable modules that allow the storage of material for crop management. The straight line as an aesthetic resource combined with stone-like materials in large vertical surfaces provides a modern visuality without contrasting with the proportions of the openings in the outbuildings. The use of wood as a closing element in the double facade provides the necessary protection against direct solar radiation and manages to transmit the warmth, organicity, and rhythm of tropical architecture. In order to take advantage of the nearby resources, the façade cladding is proposed in jaimanita stone, extracted from a site located on the outskirts of the city. Simultaneously, for the execution of the double skin of wood, it is involved the school workshop of young carpenters La Factoria, promoting local labor employment. A metallic structure for the main structure of the building is proposed due to the proximity to Envametal, a factory of metallic structures. The building is composed of 2 blocks connected through a vertical circulation core. The first floor is reserved for public use, and the following floors are used for offices. ´´ Everything we design is a response to the specific climate and culture of a particular place.´´ -Norman FosterdistinctiVe element french window PROJECTS INDEX 32 33 32 33 Interior street elevation Propuesta ARQUITECTURA +19.30m +13.90m +11.00m +5.50m +/-0.00m Jaimanitas Stone from local quarry 18 km Wood structure School carpentry workshop La Factoria 6 km PRINCIPAL ELEVATION Starting situation Longitudinal Section 1-1 Main floor Context Context INTERIOR ELEVATION Steel frame Envametal 9 km PROJECTS INDEX 3535 Visualization PROJECTS INDEX 36 37 • SERVICE BUILDING / ´´BADÍA, A COOPERATIVE CITY´´ - Promote the incorporation of student profiles in the city of Badia. -Involve Badia associations, bio-construction cooperatives, ecological agriculture associations, and the community in the rehabilitation process. It is proposed that these agents gradually and with local resources such as the ordinary cane that grows on the Riu Sec banks take charge of occupying and rehabilitating the building and its surroundings, where community, students, and productive agents will finally live together. The associations of the ecological agriculture project will be closely related to the future training cycle of Agraria. Due to the proximity with the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the presence of some formative cycles of professional educational in the city, the proposal raises three fundamental strategies: - The identification and use of local resources for rehabilitation. In turn, with these cooperatives, students of Construction, Civil Works, and Energy and Water will be able to do internships linked to more social projects. It is proposed as an open complex, where the whole community can use public space, workshops, and classrooms. It is suggested to link the UAB through the ICTA (Institute of Environmental Science and Technology) and its research lines related to organic farming and the environment, involving students of the specialties of the future dual training proposed. The rehabilitation is proposed in phases. In the first phase, it will be necessary to manage the minimum actions, demolition of partitions, that the administration assumes the financing of the carpentry and that the new cooperatives with bio-construction techniques and the use of ecological materials such as an ordinary cane are in charge of intervening in the isolation of the enclosure and putting the installations into operation. In the second phase, the cooperatives will start building the interior partitions to occupy the spaces they need. We propose removable and recyclable partitions with quincha panels, creating areas of no less than 80m2 that can be reused in the future for classrooms when the training cycles are incorporated. OBTENTION TREATMENT AND STORAGE The canes should be cleaned by removing the leaves, stems, and roots, leaving the main stem clean for later storage. APLICATION CONSTRUCTION OF PERGOLAS Adding the rods to one per caliber, they can have great length and flexibility, obtaining arches of incredible shapes. In turn, these are tied to achieve structures of excellent resistance. APLICATION INTERIOR PARTITIONS They are known as “quincha” panels. A wooden frame is built over which a framework of reeds is made. It is then covered with a mixture of mud and straw and covered with lime mortar. APLICATION REHABILITATION OF FACADE The building site’s facade is kept in sight. The insulation solution is considered for the interior, placing wooden structures with natural fiber panels such as Hemp, Bulrush, or Reed, covered with fireproof plaster plate. APLICATION GREENHOUSE CONSTRUCTION In substituting the commonly used metal structures, the canes are used to take advantage of a free and ecological natural resource that reduces the environmental impact. LONGITUDINAL SECTION PROJECTS INDEX 4545 Visualization PROJECTS INDEX 46 47 The intervention proposes the integral reform of a traditional house located in Rubí, Barcelona, and its reconversion to a house-workshop for a local craftswoman dedicated to ceramics and pottery elaboration. With a built area of 373m2, the property is a construction of more than 100 years, 293m2 for housing and 80 m2 for storage (warehouse). It is located in a rectangular plot of 12.75m x 21.60 m, and the spaces are developed around an interior patio. The main facade is practically symmetrical. It is presumed that it resulted from a probable intervention at the end of the 19th century to unify two previous annexed buildings. The primary access is through a lowered arch, with a door with two wooden doors that opens to a central hall, which works as a hall and distributor, and where there are an old well and the staircase of volta Catalana that gives access to the upper floor. The living area was developed on the east side of the house, while the west side was destined for the day laborers’ work area. The winery was located on the first floor, where the tanks for tamping the grapes were located, called ¨ buckets. The upper floor, destined for the day laborers’ rooms, has a gallery with six semicircular arches. The roof of this area is a single slope down to the courtyard. • HOUSING /” TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE IN RUBÍ” Author: Mara González Subject: Intervención en el parque edificado Course: 2018-2020 PROYECT PLOT Rubí, Barcelona LOCAL RESOURCES Wood Cerámics products 1 2 LOCAL LABOUR TEJALA.SA Manufacturer of ceramic products for construction. 2 1 Maderas Rubí. SL / Fupicsa PROJECTS INDEX 4949 The project intends to make a respectful reform, recovering spaces and elements that define the personality and essence of the original building (wrought, wine cellar, fireplace, tile mural, etc.) and in turn achieve a symbiosis with the new proposed structure through the use of pure materials such as wood, metal, and factory, thus achieving a timeless decoration. The premise is to work with the existing volume as the new structure’s container box that will give more flexibility to the upper floor and give prominence to the courtyard by recovering the walled openings on the first floor, which will favor an improvement in lighting and ventilation of these spaces. It is considered that the existing area is sufficient to accommodate the new proposed function and live harmoniously with the space for housing, so it is understood that it is not necessary to run additions or lifts. It is proposed to consolidate the existing structure and a new wooden trusses and metal beams and pilars structure for a new roof. Spatially, the round floor is destined to house the productive activity, taking advantage of the area of the old warehouse and annexed premises and the upper floor for the housing area. The intervention is planned using local materials and producers and recycling much of those found in the existing building itself, such as tiles, shingles, and wooden beams in good condition.
