Enric Miralles y las maquetas: pensamientos ocultos entrecruzados y otras intuiciones

Esquinas Dessy, Jesús,Zaragoza, Isabel

Abstract

Our journal, “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura”, founded in 2010, is an initiative of the Research Group HUM–632 of the University of Seville and its objective is the sharing and debating of research within architecture. This six–monthly scientific publication, in paper and digital format, publishes original works that have not been previously published in other journals. The article selection process consists of a double blind system involving two external reviewers, following the usual protocols for serial scientific publications. The titles, summaries and key words of articles are also published in English. “proyecto, progreso, arquitectura” presents a clear, easy and flexible structure. It deals with all the subjects relating to the theory and the practise of the architectural project. The different “open themes” that compose our editorial line are sources for the conjunction of diverse investigations. The journal is directed toward architects, students, researchers and professionals related to the planning and the accomplishment of the architectural work. EXTERNAL ANONYMOUS PEER REVIEW. When the Editorial Board of the magazine has verified that the article fulfils the standards relating to style and content indicated in the instructions for authors, the article will be sent to two anonymous experts, within the specific field of architectural investigation and critique, for a double blind review. The Director of the magazine will communicate the result of the reviewers’ evaluations, and their recommendations, to the authors by electronic mail, to the address used to send the article. The Director will communicate the result of the review (publication without changes; publication with minor corrections; publication with significant corrections; its publication is not advisable), as well as the observations and comments of the reviewers, to the main author,. If the manuscript has been accepted with modifications, the authors will have to resubmit a new version of the article, addressing the requirements and suggestions of the external reviewers. If they wish, the authors can also send a letter to the Editorial Board, in which they will indicate the content of the modifications of the article. This does not come from the end of the laborious architecture process, but it is conditioned by what it is explained to the project out of its own. How to go to things, find what them should include, enriching them, give them form…, this is the real work. It is enigmatic, it has to do with intuition, with linking ideas, and it transits between one Project and another” 1 . It is well-known the link between Enric Miralles and the models in the creative process of his works. A large number of publications have made echo of it, showing attractive images, from the first models, as a way of sketch, or process models which he did at the same time as the project, or fragment models, etc..., models which he manufactured at different scales from the same project: from 1/1000 scale as site analysis, to furniture details at scales1/20 or 1/5. In the end, models which become documents as they contain all the information and knowledge from the project, each one at their scale. A working tool which was made by the hands and with the material that he had around him: paperboard, photos, photo collage, printed copies, soap, wire, wood, etc..., and that was used as dialogue tool between collaborators and with the client. Models which travelled and keep travelling around different monographic ad collective exhibitions, spreading his knowledge into different parts of the world, and in which also the exhibition assemblage took part in the way of working those projects. Addressing an issue as much interesting as it is the model in a so generous production as Enric Miralles one, it becomes inconceivable if we don’t delimit the research and focus the look. In that sense, four projects, which were made in an intensively creative period of his career, are revealing. It is shown in them that the main goal of model making -far from searching the project finalisation/representation-, he especially focused in extending the creative process development. Miralles transformed his innovative model manufacture in another of his main tools, which whom feed the project, meditate and go forward on his work, a value added to the intentional representation thereof, occasionally tending to abstraction. In other words, and with his own words mentioned in the first lines, it allowed him “to go to the things, find what they should include, to enrich them” 2 . In that sense, the kaleidoscopic readings that he offers to us, allow us to establish transversal links with other art areas as the sculpture, the photography, the drawing, etc... Without pretending to announce the universal principles, neither generic interpretation, as it is considered his work to be a fathomless work in his totality, we try to approach us to it taking special notice of him model manufacture as a way of architectural thought development. When we look at the sources of this creativity, a world of links is discovered – sometimes unexpected-, which enrich the project in a way that make them highly attractive. RE-INVENTING DRAWINGS IN THE SPACE “So these drawings are similar to when we speak through gestures …Effort to make yourself understood… … To make understand, things in movement, plastic signs … thing and action are not formally separated…” 3 (figure 1). There were a few months left for the inauguration of the Olympic Games of 1992 in Barcelona, and, in the middle of a general euphoria, Enric Miralles was finishing project constructions of previous phases. It was a few time ago when he had returned from his stay in Columbia University, and with a few collaborators they were diving in more international adventures. It was from Japan, through Arata Isozaki, that he will receive the order of two projects. They were about the outside space of Takaoka’s train station and a small pavilion on a pilgrim route, close to Unazuki. In terms of geography, it was a huge qualitative significant leap. For the first time, there was the chance to experience with a remote culture. The intervention in the environment of Takaoka’s station endured the challenge of increasing the significance of the railway existing terminus on having opened a new access to another side of the rail tracks. The project was based in promoting the principal avenue that goes to the station from the city, drawing a new end of perspective to the bottom of the path. In this “art of initiating the thought” 4 , one of Miralles’s starting points was interpreting “the city as a system of communications, in a place that in addition is a communication crossing” 5 . As a site approximation, he snapped pictures of the city, as he usually did, some of them grouped in photomontages. His look stopped in the particular way in which service wiring (electricity, telephony, etc.) was passing through the city, due to the regulations for tremors. The cables were jumping from a pylon to another without touching the soil, drawing lines in the air at all of the streets. Miralles 6 explained that the façade could be described as a reference to these pylons that support the electricity (figure 2). But also he found in the railway signs universality, another level more of approximation to the project. Departing from these concepts, - that might be defined like direct and calligraphic-, he found a new tool of research: models manufactured with metal thread, inaugurating in the architecture area, the art of the “drawings in the space”. However, the “drawings in the space “concept, is not properly original of Enric Miralles. Opening a bracket, and moving 1928 inside the art area, it is Julio Gonzalez 7 , who defines a new art as “drawings in the space”, when Picasso asked for his collaboration to turn a series of trellised drawings into three-dimensional wire models. Julio Gonzalez demonstrated the using of the space as another sculptural material: ENRIC MIRALLES Y LAS MAQUETAS: PENSAMIENTOS OCULTOS ENTRECRUZADOS Y OTRAS INTUICIONES ENRIC MIRALLES AND MODELS: HIDDEN INTERTWINED THOUGHTS AND OTHER INTUITIONS Jesús Esquinas Dessy; Isabel Zaragoza de Pedro PROYECTO, PROGRESO, ARQUITECTURA J. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12795/ppa.2016.i15.08 Con licencia CC BY-NC-ND p.118 p.117 p.119 “This way the architect and the painter collaborate together in the sculpture, suppressing, accusing, and sweetening certain forms in benefit of the mass. For example, in the traditional sculpture a leg is created by a single block, but in sculpture that uses the space as materially, the same leg can be conceived emptied, drawn by an outline, creating equally the everything in a single block” 8 . The particular Miralles’s recurrence towards the linear elements would be identified by the first time in the addition of one more dimension to that one of his flat outlines on paper. This new technique requires measuring carefully the wires, molding and welding them for the ends in a labor of supreme precision, unusual technique in the architecture model manufacture of early 90s. But the fundamental key was, as in Julio’s González sculptures, in the dialog between the object and the conscience. In this sense, he was fully identifying his architectural thoughts, as his models were adopting then the qualities of “drawings in the space”, expressing the architectural concepts of the project through his models. When we attentively look the joined image, what at first it seems as if they were drawings, actually they are fragments of the wire model corresponding to façade on the front of the station. It is possible to estimate in it an allegory to the electrical cables of the Japanese cities; as if it was a question of a series of synthetic “outlines”, where the sinuous lines “drawn in the space” remind the chains of these cables that are resting in the pillars, forming a consubstantially part of the landscape. Definitively, it is a question of a meaningful photography where a direct relationship exists between the model photographic information, with the real image from cables and posts of the city and with the drawn image of the façade proposal. The dialog and interaction between the used materials: the metal and the space award certain air between enigmatic and entertained to the image (figure 3). The effort for reaching the last limits of the synthesis process shows similarities with some linear configuration sculptures series with which Julio Gonzalez expresses his “drawings in the space” (figure 4). We are opening the second bracket to introduce the importance of the photographic collages in Miralles’s creative process. One of the tools that might be qualified as the architect personal, they are the collages with “David Hockney” style photographs. The same year 1991, he would publish by the first time his works in construction with this type of representation: underlining that “(...) Here, in these collages it is only to insist on the simultaneity of the perception on relation to the project” 9 . But in the projects of Japan his local photocompositions evolved joining the models, creating this way Enric Miralles’s innovative three-dimensional personal, system close to that of Hockney. With the purpose of bearing the site in mind during the projecting process the photographs taken from the station, they were set in a kind of fan-shaped configuration in which the city skyline was drawn from the intervention site. Later, he joined photocomposition and model, creating a kind of scenario with his own working materials: the main actors, in other words, the proposal model, highlighted from the scene background. This way, it could be seen, on the one hand, together with the photocomposition of the urban landscape, and on the other hand - and in the foreground-, together with the model made by molding threads of wire. The final image would be his first three-dimensional representation made by the model and photomontage addition 10 (figure 5). THE SURREALISTS STRATEGY TO RE-PRESENT MODELS The other order in Japan, which was more generous concerning model production, it is located in a very rugged mountain landscape, over a meander of the Kurobe River, near the town of Unazuki. Hot spring area, waterfalls and changing throughout the year scenery, which is completely covered with snow during the winter and that by April, thaws. Across the river a path begins with a concrete bridge, which rises through the lush forest; and the Japanese tradition termed as path of meditation 11 (figure 6). In this case, Miralles’s project consisted of creating a small pavilion in place, in order that the pilgrims could do an initiation pause as an act before the beginning of the mentioned path in a place characterized by the mist, in an atmosphere that invites to the spiritual world. The respect for the place led him to make a meticulous examination of every moment of the path, of the conditions and differences between each one of the limits, as well as of each ones of the travelers tours, proposing a tour as a promenade. Miralles would concentrate on a few construction remains, belonging to the foundations of a former bridge tensed by cables that had been working up to the war. He decides to use them as base for the new construction, with a proposal based on a similar technology. He proposes a suspended path “that turns on itself” 12 like a small landscape viewing-point pavilion. When approaching to Unazuki work, so close to the abstraction, the spectator, who is anxious to conspire a form from a tangle of lines, is grateful for any reference on which to try to understand the surprising work. It would be in the transcription of a conference celebrated in 1992 in Santander 13 , when Miralles would offer the “clue” when showing a zenithal slide of the model linking these contours of the big and the small, with the human form. In his notebooks of notes of this period he was collecting artists’ maternities drawings as those of Moore, redrawing them again and again 14 . Years later Benedetta Tagliabue would affirm that Miralles was representing the maternity of her sister Pilar in the project of Unazuki’s pavilion 15 . N15_ MAQUETAS J. ESQUINAS DESSY; I. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.12795/ppa.2016.i15.08 Con licencia CC BY-NC-ND p.120 p.121 Here appears again the affinity with Julio Gonzalez work, maternity is also one of its reference topics. Therefore, with this information, it is interesting to discover the sense of the pavilion shape through its author eyes. If we look attentively the intended zenithal photo of the model you can discover a figurative conclusion that has to do with the human form. Due to this duplication strategy, through the action of the shadows, the strength of the pavilion position is shown, suspended on a steep topography, as well as the relationship with the elements that are part of the promenade of the proposal, like the bridge and the footbridge leading to the pavilion through it (figure 7). We have seen that with materials such as balsa wood, wire molding and a camera, Miralles suggests a number of specific looks which shows the intentions of their work in a non-direct way, concepts of the world of abstract sculpture. Just as the sculptor Julio Gonzalez devised his “drawings in space” 16 Miralles said in a personal way the poetics of his project also working space as material. In addition to this model re-presentation Miralles interpreted in a personal way the poetics of his project, which allows us to find different ways to approach their imagination. Let’s have a look one more time: the photography of another working model made of metal thread. This model construction system as a way of “drawing in space” enabled him to work in this case thoroughly with creative resources as transparencies, duplications, reflections, backgrounds, etc. and also to introduce movement (figure 8). Looking at the wire model image, it reminds us of pictures of the Surrealists. Rosalind Krauss specify on the issue of representation in this artistic movement: “(...) It is precisely this experience of reality as a representation what characterizes the two key concepts of surrealism, the idea of Wonder and Convulsed Beauty. (...) Breton characterizes the convulsive beauty (...) to mimicry, to those cases in nature that one thing imitates another;(...) The mimicry is therefore an example of the natural production of signs, the way an element of nature becomes the representation of another” 17 . Following with Kraus speech to continue discovering affinities between the expressiveness of the remarkable documents from Miralles models and surrealist thought: “Departing from this special position of photography related to reality, their identity as a kind of reservoir of reality itself, the manipulations performed by the Surrealists photographers -the establishment of dividing and duplicating spaces- and spaces and intended record duplications of the same reality (...). The photographic process is therefore used to produce a paradox: the paradox of reality turned into a sign, of the presence transformed into absence, in representation, in empty space, in writing “ 18 . In this sense, the intended photo of the model, based on the duplication strategy -which is the shadow of the object but also represents reflection as a sign of the pavilion on the water of Kurobe River - model pavilion fins and shade they produce (duplication), could be differentiate. At the same time, the slightly unfocused shadow causes an intense perception of movement that makes us think in the reflection of the pavilion on Kurobe River water. Surrealist photographers created sculptural objects, departing from non-existing scenarios, as sculptures, out of photography. For example, in the work of Man Ray 19 entitled “Man,” the strategy of “duplication” can be seen from the shadow of the object on the background (figure 9). Therefore, the simultaneity of heterogeneous suggestions that Miralles established metaphors and insinuated metamorphosis in the model design and re-presentation, it can be affirmed that an affinity is shown between the discourse of the Surrealists and Miralles way-of-doing, personally implemented. THE MODEL AS A SYSTEM OF CONSTRUCTING A THOUGHT “I would like to extract the material for this type of project from the working method; that what you build is a response (...) to the actions that you are causing” 20 . Another scale of work, in 1992, the team of Enric Miralles was invited to complete a proposal on a transformation of the water basin of the Miralles in the West port of Frankfurt (Osthaven). It tried to offer various views of a possible future for the cited port area, after its shutdown. The projects should be conceived as forecast exercises along with those that would study the potential viability of the proposals, but without the requirement of reaching a specific program 21 . Miralles explains that as a work strategy his project is centered on three interventions: the concept of marshlands, the prolongation of the Landaustrasse roadway and the crossing bridges; the development of these intervention forecasts are those that give way to the definition of the constructions. One part of the way the thought of the project is started 22 was the historical investigation of the different stages that occurred in the location. In this regard, Miralles focused on a root characteristic of the location, concretely in that era where the port zone would have been swampy. Based on this quality, he would find a basis for building his proposal: the ability to alter the surface of the ground and the inalterability facing the time of the marshlands 23 . But our interests lie on the manufacturing of models as a fundamental part of the creative process for the proposal. In other words, the working method and the actions that are made to advance the “process of inventing and representing” 24 for this project. While being very far from thinking about completing a “presentation model”, Miralles and his team started an investigation that is qualified as “amnesiac” in the sense that its very process would end up defining the proposal and its results would end up building a single and exciting model (figure 10). In this project, the working method could be defined as close to abstraction and the association of ideas. In the model process, Miralles combined, within the development of the model, fragmentation, superposition and juxtaposition of various elements: photographs of the location -some set as a photo-collage-, fragments of the location map, partial de la arquitectura.
