Ophrys × sommieri (Orchidaceae), a new taxon for eastern Andalusia (Spain)

The presence of Ophrys bombyliflora Link in Eastern Andalusia is very scarce in comparison with the well represented Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd. (Becerra & Robles, 2009). On the 13th of April 2015, two specimens of plants showing intermediate floral characters (mainly in petals, lateral labellum lobes and speculum) suggesting the interspecific hybrid Ophrys bombyliflora Link × Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd. were found in the wild in Granada province by the authors. This taxon was first described by Sommier (1896) from specimens collected in Monte Argentario (Toscana, Italy) and later named by Camus as Ophrys × sommieri E.G. Camus in Cortesi (1904). The plants were growing in the middle of a colony of its parent species, Ophrys bombyliflora Link & Ophrys tenthredinifera Willd., in a scrubland area surrounded by almond and olive groves to the east of Moraleda de Zafayona. Photographs were taken (fig. 1) and the images sent to experts who confirmed the correct identification (Lluís Salvador & Francisco Márquez García, com. pers.). No herbarium samples were collected due to the bad conditions of the specimens with only a couple of flowers in bloom. A year later the authors tried to collect an herbarium sample but the plants were not relocated. In Granada province only two localities with no more than 30 specimens were known for the former species, this new site found in 2015 is the third and most abundant with a population between 300-400 specimens in only 50 m2. According to the literature, this hybrid is included in Flora iberica (Aedo & Herrero, 2005) on a general list of the hybrids for the Ophrys genus found in the Iberian peninsula without mentioning any location. Flora Vascular de Andalucía Oriental (Blanca et al., 2011) does not include any hybrid taxa. This new data represents the first record of this hybrid in Eastern Andalusia and probably the fourth location in Spain after having been located previously in Mallorca by Luis Alberto Domínguez (2011), in Cádiz, Andalusia by Roux & Roux (2012) and in Badajoz, Extremadura (García & Márquez, 2014).
