The egg pa e n is bo de ed abo e by one incised line and below by wo incised lines and a ow o do s. The p incipal subjec on he body is awoman’sbus wi h kek yphalos (?) acing le . I is p opped by wo end ils om below and lanked om bo h sides wi h cu ling end ils, do s, and lowe s. The backside below he handle is no deco a ed. Yellow/gold is used o highligh he hai , eye, and end ils below head, whi e is applied o lesh, ongues, and end ils whi e washed in dilu e glaze. Black glaze, li le lus ous, o ange -bu clay. Small jug wi h wide, eel -shaped body wi h sligh ly conca e sides and la langes a op and bo om. The unde side is sligh ly conca e, he shoulde wide and domed low. I has a all ubula neck wi h conca e sides, passing in o an oblique oughlike spou wi h asmall lange below he lip. The handle is high -swung, wi h small mould -made masks lanking i s uppe pa . Deco a ion is pain ed on glaze: he e is ase ies o elonga ed yellow ongues on he lowe pa o he neck and on he shoulde apai o lau el -sp ays wi h ed s ems and al e an ing ed and yellow washed whi e pai s o lea es mee ing a a ose e in he cen e. The ose e consis s o ele en do s wi h la ge cen al pa pain ed a ound he s em. On he uppe lange he e a e aces o pain ed deco a ion, possibly egg pa e n. The shape co esponds o Mo el 5772a1b. Abou 340–330 BC. The ques ion o o igin o he s anda d epichysis emains un esol ed, he a i y o he shape in po e y, oge he wi h aspec s o he shape i sel such as he high -a ching handle, sugges apossible p o o ype in me al (G een 1986, 121).The shape is pa icula ly common in he yea s ollowing ca. 330 BC. The mo i o alau el w ea h mee ing a a ose e in he cen e was popula as ea ly as in he middle phase o Gna hian po e y. The mo i is amed om abo e and below wi h egg -and -da bands and ows o do s combining incision o ho izon al lines and egg ou lines and pain ing o egg insides and do s. Side B: The neck is deco a ed wi h wo pai s o incised lines enclosing egg -and -da band wi h a ow o whi e do s below. Abou 340–325 BC. Pelikai wi h a idge on he uppe pa o he neck be ween he op o he handle and he lip we e in oduced abou he middle o he 4 h cen u y o ea ly in he hi d qua e o he 4 h cen u y (G een 1968, 42). Ve y close pa allel o ou ase is apelike in Milano, collec ion Lagioia -Ja a (classi ied as he Dunedin G oup).1 Bo h heads seem as o come om one hand, especially when we compa e he line o nose and chin. Pelike (Pl. 4/13a–b) H10-4768 H. 20.5 cm, diam. o body 12 cm. Excep o he es o ed im, he essel is in ac . Smoo h o ange -bu clay, black lus ous glaze wi h a ese ed band be ween body and oo , glazed on i s mouldings. The essel unde - side is hollowed and ese ed wi h a iny knob -omphalos a he cen e. The b oad ou - u ned lip has abe elled edge, he neck is slim wi h slan ing shoulde . Two handles a ached below he im and on he shoulde s ha e p o ube an oll along hei ou side axis. The body is bul- bous wi h alow s emmed oo . The whole essel is glazed including he inside o he mou h down o he dep h o 5.5 cm. Deco a ion on he neck is only pain ed while on body wo bands o e ical ibs a e sepa a ed by asmoo h ho izon al s ip o pain ed deco a ion. The e ical ibs a e ese ed below he handles. Side A: The op o he neck is amed by akyma ion bo - de ed om abo e and below wi h double lines wi h a ow o do s below, all a e pain ed in gold/ yellow. On he bo om o he neck, he e is apanel wi h igu al deco a ion bo de ed below by ayellow line and ea u ing ado e o he le wi h head ben down lanked wi h lo al mo i s. The i s pai s o end ils s a om he g ound a ei he side o he main s em. A handle oo , he e a e wo ho izon al and six e ical lines, all in gold/yellow. Sides Aand B: belly - ieze o al e na ing gold/yellow and ed sec ions o a hick band wi h wa y edges bo de ed om abo e and below by ho izon al lines. The mos equen shapes a e ing -handled kan ha oi, oinochoi, and pelikai. In some cases, ibbing is in e up ed by asmoo h belly - ieze deco a ed e y o en by as agal. The pelike in Be lin, Humbold -Uni e si ä , in . no. D388 has kyma ion on he neck pain ed in he same speci ic V -shaped manne as ou pelike, so acco ding o Schmid (1991, ig. 13, 110) bo h ases can indica e one hand. The same pa e n can also be ound on handle oo s. Fo lo al end ils s a ing om he g ound see akan ha os in Zu ich (G een 1977, ig. 9b) and ano he kan ha os in Naples (G een 1977, ig. 10a) belonging o he G oup o Zu ich 2692 (G een 1977). The lowe wall is ese ed, pa ly eddened. The e is addi onal black glaze on he s epped base. The unde side is ese ed. Pea shaped bo le wi h slim neck, s epped base and colla ed im. The e a e wo whi e lines unde he colla , e ical ongues on he neck, and on he shoul - de aho ison al zigzag wi h do s be ween wo lines washed o e yellow. The body is ibbed. Abou 300 BC.
