A sea ch is pe o med o an excess o e en s, o e he s anda d model expec a-
ions, wi h a pho on, a lep on, and la ge missing ans e se ene gy in pp collisions
a √s=7 TeV. Such e en s a e expec ed in many new physics models, in pa icula
a supe symme ic heo y ha is b oken ia a gauge-media ed mechanism, when he
ligh es cha ged and neu al gauginos a e mass degene a e. The da a sample used in
his sea ch co esponds o an in eg a ed luminosi y o 35 pb−1collec ed wi h he CMS
de ec o a he LHC. No e idence o such an excess abo e he s anda d model back-
g ounds, domina ed by Wγp oduc ion, is ound. The esul s a e p esen ed as 95%
con idence le el uppe limi s on he c oss sec ion o a benchma k gauge-media ed
scena io, and a e hen con e ed in o exclusion limi s on he squa k, gluino, and wino
masses.

1 In oduc ion
Supe symme y (SUSY) is one o he bes s udied scena ios o physics beyond he s anda d
model (SM). I alle ia es he hie a chy p oblem and may p o ide a pa h o he g and uni ica-
ion o o ces. O pa icula in e es is a scena io wi h gauge-media ed SUSY b eaking [1–9],
which elegan ly add esses he SUSY la ou p oblem. In he gauge media ion scena io, SUSY
b eaking occu s a ene gy scales much smalle han he Planck scale, esul ing in he g a i ino
(˜
G) as he ligh es SUSY pa icle (LSP), which would escape de ec ion and esul in an imbal-
ance o momen um in he plane ans e se o he beam di ec ion (Emiss
T). In one scena io o
gene al gauge-media ed (GGM) SUSY [10, 11], he nex - o-ligh es SUSY pa icles (NLSP) a e
mos ly he supe pa ne s o he SU(2)Lgauge ields (winos). This scena io esul s in a small
mass spli ing be ween he cha ged ( ˜
W±) and neu al ( ˜
W0) winos. The cha ged wino decays
p omp ly in o a g a i ino and a W boson, and he neu al wino in o a g a i ino and a pho on o
a Z boson [12]. I R-pa i y is conse ed, colou ed SUSY pa icles a e pai -p oduced, esul ing
in he p esence o wo NLSPs and mul iple je s pe e en . An example p ocess is shown in
Fig. 1. The e en opologies o in e es he e o e con ain, in addi ion o Emiss
T, one o he ollow-
ing signa u es: wo pho ons (γ); lep on(s) (`) and one pho on; lep on(s) and je s; one pho on
and je s; o all je s. Final s a es wi h wo o mo e lep ons a e supp essed because o he W and
Z lep onic b anching ac ions.

2 The CMS De ec o
The Compac Muon Solenoid (CMS) is a nea ly he me ic, mul ipu pose de ec o and is de-
sc ibed in de ail elsewhe e [16]. Cha ged pa icle ajec o ies a e measu ed wi h silicon pixel
and s ip acking de ec o s encompassed by a 3.8 T supe conduc ing solenoid, wi h ull az-
imu hal co e age and |η|<2.5. The azimu hal angle φis de ined in he plane ans e se o he
beam di ec ion. The pseudo apidi y ηis de ined as η=−ln[ an(θ/2)], whe e θis he pola
angle wi h espec o he coun e clockwise p o on beam di ec ion, wi h he o igin a he cen e
o he de ec o . Ene gy deposi s o pa icles a e measu ed wi h lead- ungs a e c ys al elec o-

magne ic (ECAL) and b ass/scin illa o (|η|<3) o i on/qua z- ibe (3 <|η|<5) had onic
(HCAL) calo ime e s. Muon candida es a e iden i ied in gas-ionisa ion de ec o s embedded in

3 Candida e E en Selec ion
We use he da a sample collec ed by he CMS de ec o a he LHC om Ma ch o No embe
2010 co esponding o an in eg a ed luminosi y o 35 pb−1[17]. E en s a e equi ed o ha e a
leas one high ans e se momen um (pT) elec on o muon, in addi ion o a pho on. E en s
a e selec ed and eco ded using a wo- ie ed igge sys em. We use a sui e o single-elec on
and single-muon igge s wi h se e al h esholds changing o ma ch he apidly inc easing in-
s an aneous luminosi y o he LHC. The elec on candida es a e econs uc ed om clus e s o
ene gy in he ECAL ba el (|η|<1.479) and endcaps (1.479 <|η|<3) and a e equi ed o
ma ch cha ged acks econs uc ed in he silicon acking de ec o s. Muons a e econs uc ed
as cha ged acks ma ched o hi pa e ns in he muon de ec o s. We u he equi e he lead-
ing elec on o muon o ha e pT>20 GeV, |η|<2.1 and o sa is y a se o iden i ica ion and
isola ion c i e ia [18]. Fo elec ons, he egion om 1.44 <|η|<1.57 is excluded since i
con ains se ices and cables exi ing be ween he ansi ion o he ba el and endcap calo ime-
e s and leads o lowe quali y econs uc ed clus e s. E en s in which he elec on is con-
sis en wi h ha ing o igina ed om a pho on con e sion a e ejec ed. The e iciency o he
igge s o e en s wi h an elec on (muon) wi h pTabo e 20 GeV is measu ed o be 0.98 ±0.01
(0.968 ±0.004). Lep on iden i ica ion and econs uc ion e iciencies a e measu ed in da a using
Z→`+`−decays. The a io o he lep on e iciencies measu ed in da a o hose om Mon e
Ca lo (MC) simula ion (desc ibed below) is ound o be 0.928 ±0.015 (0.990 ±0.001) o an
elec on (muon). We equi e he p esence o a leas one pho on wi h pT>30 GeV, |η|<1.44,
spa ially sepa a ed om he lep on by ∆R(`,γ) = p(∆η)2+ (∆φ)2>0.4. The econs uc ion
o pho on candida es in he calo ime e is simila o ha o he elec ons, wi h he addi ional
equi emen ha hey do no ha e associa ed hi pa e ns in he pixel de ec o consis en wi h
a ack. The da a/MC scale ac o o he pho on e iciency is 0.97 ±0.02. We demand ha he
lep on and he pho on candida es be isola ed om any o he ac i i y in he acke , ECAL, o
HCAL. The e en s a e equi ed o con ain a leas one econs uc ed p ima y e ex wi hin 24
cm o he geome ic cen e o he de ec o along he beamline and a ans e se dis ance wi h
espec o he econs uc ed beam axis o less han 2 cm. These selec ions de ine ou candida e
sample, which consis s o 264 (126) e en s in he eγ(µγ) channel. Finally, in o de o minimise
he numbe o expec ed backg ound e en s while e aining high signal e iciency, we selec
e en s wi h Emiss
T>100 GeV. The Emiss
Tis econs uc ed using calo ime e ene gy deposi s and
is co ec ed o he con ibu ion om he muons and o he expec ed calo ime e esponse o
each econs uc ed had on ack [19].
4 Backg ound Es ima ion
The dominan backg ound p ocess is Wγp oduc ion, wi h he W boson decaying lep onically.
This backg ound is es ima ed using he MADGRAPH MC gene a o [20] wi h pa on showe ing
using PYTHIA [21]. The esul is scaled om he leading-o de (LO) o he nex - o-leading-o de
(NLO) c oss sec ion ob ained om he BAUR NLO Wγgene a o [22] and using he CTEQ66
NLO pa on dis ibu ion unc ion (PDF) se s [23]. Fo example, o a pho on wi h pT=50 GeV
he NLO/LO K ac o is 2.3. The NLO calcula ion is in good ag eemen wi h he Wγp oduc-
ion c oss sec ion measu ed by he CMS collabo a ion [24], o e he ele an phase space o
ha measu emen , gi ing con idence in he NLO p edic ion used he e. The MC e en s a e

p ocessed wi h he ull CMS de ec o simula ion based on he Gean 4 [25] package. To es i-
ma e he unce ain y on he K ac o due o highe -o de co ec ions, we a y he ac o isa ion
and eno malisa ion scales by a ac o o wo and obse e a a ia ion in he c oss sec ion o
app oxima ely 20%. Addi ional sys ema ic unce ain ies on his backg ound es ima e include
he unce ain ies on he igge e iciencies and da a/MC scale ac o s desc ibed abo e, he
PDF se es ima ed using he PDF4LHC wo king g oup p ocedu e (2%) [26], and he in eg a ed
luminosi y measu emen (4%) [17].
The nex mos impo an ins umen al backg ound o igina es om SM p ocesses ha ha e
misiden i ied lep ons and pho ons. Da a-d i en me hods a e used o de e mine all backg ounds
in ol ing objec misiden i ica ion [27]. We conside sou ces o backg ound in which a je o an
elec on is misiden i ied as a pho on (je →γand e →γ) o in which a je is misiden i ied
as a lep on. The dominan SM p ocesses ha con ibu e o he je →γmisiden i ica ion back-
g ound include W+je s and QCD mul ije p oduc ion. The je →γbackg ound is de e mined
by selec ing a sample o e en s ha sa is y he c i e ia o ou `γcandida e sample excep ha
he pho on is equi ed o ail ei he he isola ion o elec omagne ic showe shape c i e ion. We
hen weigh his sample by he p obabili y o misiden i ying a je as a pho on [28] o es ima e
he o al con ibu ion o his backg ound o he signal sample. The SM p ocesses con ibu ing
o he e →γmisiden i ica ion backg ound a e p edominan ly Z and ¯
p oduc ion. The e →γ
backg ound is de e mined in a simila way o he je →γbackg ound, by selec ing a sample
o e en s ha sa is y he c i e ia o ou `γcandida e sample bu wi h he addi ional equi e-
men ha he pho on be ma ched o a pa e n o hi s in he pixel acke . We hen weigh his
sample by he p obabili y o misiden i ying an elec on as a pho on ( γe) o es ima e he o al
con ibu ion o his backg ound o he signal sample. The p obabili y, γe, is de e mined om
Z→e+e−da a o be 0.014 ±0.004.
The s a egy o de e mining QCD con ibu ions which ha e poo ly measu ed Emiss
Tis o se-
lec e en s wi h kinema ic p ope ies simila o he candida e e en s, bu which a e known o
ha e no genuine Emiss
T. A con ol sample o e en s domina ed by Z →e+e−decays is used.
These e en s a e u he eweigh ed o ep oduce he `γsample kinema ics. In pa icula , we
ep oduce he `γ ans e se ene gy dis ibu ion and, he e o e, he ans e se ene gy o he
had onic ecoil agains he `γcandida es, ensu ing a co ec desc ip ion o he Emiss
T. In o de
o desc ibe he dis ibu ion o he ans e se mass o he lep on and Emiss
Tsys em, de ined as
MT=q2·pT`·Emiss
T·(1−cos(φ`−φEmiss
T)), he lep on pTdis ibu ion is also eweigh ed. We
de e mine he backg ound con ibu ion by no malising he con ol sample in such a way ha
he o al backg ound ma ches he numbe o selec ed e en s in da a wi h Emiss
Tless han 30 GeV.
Tables 1 and 2 summa ise he b eakdown o he backg ounds o Emiss
T>40 GeV and o ou
op imal selec ion o Emiss
T>100 GeV. The dominan sou ces o sys ema ic unce ain ies a e due
o he limi ed p ecision o he da a-d i en me hods and he unce ain ies on he co esponding
misiden i ica ion a e measu emen s.
5 Resul s
The Emiss
Tdis ibu ion is shown in Fig. 2 ( op) o he eγand µγ channels combined, oge he
wi h he sum o he expec ed backg ound con ibu ions, as well as he expec a ion o he signal
om a SUSY benchma k poin ( e e ed o as GMC, desc ibed below) o compa ison. Figu e 2
(bo om) shows he MTdis ibu ion. The da a ag ee well wi h he SM expec a ions and do no
exhibi any e idence o an excess o e en s wi h high Emiss
T.
We pe o med se e al c oss-checks o suppo ou modeling o he SM backg ounds. Fo exam-

ple, e en s wi h MTabo e 70 GeV ha e small QCD backg ound, as shown in Fig. 2 (bo om),
and we e i ied ha we can desc ibe all he kinema ic dis ibu ions in hese e en s wi h he
sum o he expec ed backg ounds, excep he con ibu ion om QCD. We also checked ha he
pho on candida es ha e a iming consis en wi h ha ing o igina ed om he p ima y e ex, o
e i y ha non-collision backg ounds a e negligible. Finally, we e i ied ha ou QCD back-
g ound de e mina ion p ocedu e wo ks in he p esence o a la ge ange o SUSY signals by
mixing simula ed SUSY e en s in o he da a sample and ecalcula ing he QCD backg ound;
he change in i s alue was ound o be negligible.
Since we obse e no e idence o an excess o e en s wi h high Emiss
Tcompa ed o he SM ex-
pec a ions, we in e p e ou esul s by placing 95% con idence le el (CL) lowe limi s on GGM
SUSY pa icle masses in a benchma k model. The GGM SUSY [12] signal is simula ed using
he PYTHIA [21] MC gene a o e sion 6.420 wi h une D6T [29], and assuming ha he squa k
mass (m(˜
q)) is app oxima ely equal o he gluino mass (m(˜
g)), wi h he cha ged and neu al
winos as co-NLSPs, and an β=2. This sea ch ocuses on he m(˜
W0)>100 GeV egion, which
is beyond he sensi i i y o he p e ious collide expe imen s [13–15, 30]. We he e o e gene a e
poin s wi h m(˜
g)and m(˜
q)in he ange o 350–800 GeV and m(˜
W0)≈m(˜
W±)in he ange o
100–480 GeV. The gene a ed e en s a e p ocessed wi h he ull CMS de ec o simula ion using
he Gean 4 package. The NLO K ac o s we e calcula ed using PROSPINO [31] and a e ound on
a e age o be 1.4 wi h a ∼20% a ia ion. As an example o a SUSY benchma k model, we use
he poin gene a ed wi h m(˜
g) = m(˜
q) = 450 GeV and m(˜
W0)≈m(˜
W±) = 195 GeV, e e ed
o as GMC.
We use a Bayesian app oach o de e mine he 95% CL uppe limi s on he c oss sec ions in he
benchma k SUSY model desc ibed abo e, combining he likelihoods o he eγand µγ channels.
The inpu s o bo h channels a e he sum o he da a-d i en backg ounds, he Wγbackg ound
as de e mined om he MC simula ion and co ec ed by he app op ia e da a/MC scale ac-
o s, and, o each MC SUSY poin , he e iciency imes accep ance, co ec ed o he app op i-
a e da a/MC scale ac o s. Each o hese inpu s o a gi en channel has log-no mal dis ibu ed
nuisance pa ame e s ha a y by he unce ain y in each quan i y. We conside he 4% unce -
ain y on he luminosi y as an addi ional nuisance pa ame e . As an example o he calcula ion,
he e iciency imes accep ance imes b anching a io o he GMC benchma k poin o eγ(µγ)
is 0.0063 ±0.0003 (0.0083 ±0.0004). The 95% CL uppe limi on he c oss sec ion ob ained o
his poin is 8.7 pb. The limi is less han he p edic ed NLO c oss sec ion o his poin , (12.7 ±
2.6) pb, wi h unce ain ies due o he PDF [26] (10%) and he eno maliza ion scale (18%). We
he e o e exclude his poin wi h mo e han 95% con idence. The obse ed 95% CL uppe limi s
on he c oss sec ion a e shown in Fig. 3 as a unc ion o he squa k / gluino and he wino masses
o he kinema ic selec ions applied in his analysis (an elec on wi h pT>20 GeV, |η|<1.44
o 1.57 <|η|<2.1; a muon wi h pT>20 GeV and |η|<2.1; a pho on wi h pT>30 GeV,
|η|<1.44; e en s wi h Emiss
T>100 GeV). Figu e 4 displays he esul ing 95% CL exclusion e-
gion in he squa k / gluino and wino mass plane, whe e masses in he a ea below he cu e a e
excluded. The shaded egion a ound he cen al alue o he exclusion con ou ep esen s he
a ia ion o he p edic ed c oss sec ion by one s anda d de ia ion. Also shown is he expec ed
95% CL exclusion as well as he he egion excluded by p e ious sea ches a he Te a on in he
same channel [13–15], as in e p e ed in [30].
6 Conclusions
We pe o med he i s sea ch in p o on-p o on collisions a √s=7 TeV o an excess o e en s
wi h a pho on, a lep on, and la ge Emiss
To e he SM expec a ion. Using a da a sample co e-
