Editorial The 41th issue of Slovo asmysl presents mutually advantageous encounters and the crossing of boundaries. We see this first and foremost in the geographical sense: the trajectory of the late medieval novel on Maguelone, for example, between the French, German, Czech, and Polish contexts; the correspondence of two distinguished scholars, Dmitrij Tschizewskij and Antonín Škarka, across the Iron Curtain; and the potential intellectual transfer between the feminist thought of Chicana authors and that of their counterparts in Central Europe. In other essays, these encounters have the shape of an innovative combination of theoretical and historical approaches, as in the interpretation of medieval sources through the lens of queer studies, or the effort to expand the canon of Czech literature with aremarkable forgotten novel from the 1850s. In Studies and Sketches, Zuzana Smetanová and Martin Šenk ponder the question of how medieval sources can be interpreted from the perspective of queer studies, using the example of letters and other writings by the Carolingian scholar Alcuin of York (c.735–804) that are characterised by strong erotic affectivity in relation to their male recipients. The essay won the student competition held by the Centre for Gender Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in commemoration of Jiřina Šiklová. In an essay rich in material, Alena Kotšmídová devotes herself to adetailed comparison of various versions of the late medieval romance Peter of Provence and the Fair Maguelone, which allows her to trace the journey of the text from the French context through German translations to the Czech lands, and also to compare Czech and Polish versions. The novel by Václav Ž.Donovský The Three Czechs from 1855 is the topic of arevealing article by Václav Vaněk. This large-scale literary fresco (720 pages in octavo format and divided into four volumes) was not particularly well received by critics in its own time, and it has appeared in literary commentary only sporadically since then. As the author of this essay shows, however, it is aremarkable text influenced by the success of Eugène Sue’s The Mysteries of Paris, as well as an attempt at acomplex social novel that can also be understood as the missing link between literary romanticism and realism. Benjamin Slavík focuses in his article on how the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze absorbs and reworks the ideas and style of Antonin Artaud; these references help Deleuze to create aconception of thought that cannot be identified with representation yet does not fall into an indiscernible chaos. In the last article of this issue, Aleksandra Hołubowicz asks asurprising question concerning the Chicana feminist thought of authors like Gloria Anzaldúa, Chela OPEN ACCESS
10 SLOVO A SMYSL 41 Sandoval, and Ana Castillo, pondering whether it would be possible to appropriate their respective conceptual groundwork in the context of contemporary Poland and feminist theory, reflecting its historical and social situation. The author carefully selects concepts that can be meaningfully used for this cultural transfer, emphasising some of the problems associated with the abundant Polish reception of feminist and gender theories from the United States. The Retrospective, prepared and introduced by Marie Škarpová, presents arevealing source material: part of the correspondence between the Ukrainian-Russian Slavist Dmitrij Tschizewskij (1894–1977) and the Czech medievalist Antonín Škarka (1906–1972), dedicated to Škarka’s preparation of a collection of poetry by Adam Mich na zOtradovic. It is aremarkable document of scholarly cooperation between researchers from Eastern and Western blocs, one that resulted in asuccessful editorial project. The retrospective also commemorates the jubilee of one of the most important Czech medievalists of the second half of the 20th century. In the Critical Views, Pavel Šidák reviews the book Krátká věčnost. Vytržení zčasu vnarativních textech od středověku na práh moderní doby (‘Ashort eternity: The tearing out of time in narratives from the Middle Ages at the threshold of modernity’) by Kateřina Smyčková, Martina Mecco writes about the publication Místa paměti vprocesu formování moderního českého národa (‘Realms of memory in the process of shaping the modern Czech nation’) by Petr Čornej, Václava Kofránková et al., Jiří Brabec reviews the edition Anketa oknihu roku Lidových novin (1928–1949) (‘Survey on the book of the year in Lidové noviny, 1928–1949)’ prepared by Lukáš Holeček, and Nikola Bečanová discusses the book Jen mít dosti sil! Ženy vdějinách české filozofie avědy (‘Just to be strong enough! Women in the history of Czech philosophy and science’) by the trio of authors Zdeňka Jastrzembská, Dagmar Pichová, and Jan Zouhar. The remaining reviews are devoted to the book Sari gelin. Antologie povídek zÁzerbájdžánu (‘Sari gelin: An anthology of short stories from Azerbaijan’), reviewed by Petra Košťálová, Martin Machovec’s volume Kinterpretaci české podzemní aundergroundové literatury 1948–1989 (‘Towards an interpretation of Czech underground literature, 1948–1989’), discussed in detail by Gertraude Zand, and Dělej něco! České aslovenské fanziny abudování alternativních scén (‘Do something! Czech and Slovak fanzines and the building of alternative scenes’) (Miroslav Michela, Jan Lomíček and Karel Šima), reviewed by Petr A.Bílek. The Translation section is prepared once more in connection to the Otokar Fischer Prize, awarded by the Institut pro studium literatury. For 2022, it was awarded to the book Zwischen Prag und Nikolsburg. Jüdisches Leben in den böhmischen Ländern (eds. Kateřina Čapková and Hillel J.Kieval, Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Göttingen 2020), which has already been translated into Czech (and also into English, under the title Prague and Beyond: Jews in the Bohemian Lands); we publish Jan Budňák’s laudatio. Since the book is available in Czech, we have chosen another essay by one of its coauthors, the American Hebraist Joshua Teplitsky, for translation. In this essay, he discusses the plague epidemic that struck the Czech lands in 1713, focusing on the inhabitants of the Jewish Town at the time of the epidemic. The introduction to Teplitsky’s text, written also in the context of the current challenges to human civilisation, is provided by Daniel Soukup. Red. OPEN ACCESS
