Euro crisis from german and french perspectives in 2013

MacGregor, Robert K.

Abstract

Ine i ably, i was decided ha such a splendid achie emen should be delinea ed in a solemn cons i u ional o ma , making i mo e de ined, o icial, and illus ious (and also e lec ing on he glo ious leade s). A uni ied cu ency o Eu ope, less han 60 yea s a e he Second Wo ld Wa , was highly signi ican , and also a sign o u he in eg a ion among he membe na ions. The aim o g owing c oss-bo de ade, inc easing e iciency in inancial as well as goods and se ices ma ke s and educing anspo a ion cos s and cos s o doing business seemed well wi hin each. Howe e , i should ha e been clea o all ha he ‘g ea equalize ’ o a common cu ency would lead o he mo e e icien and compe i i e manu ac u ing coun ies making in oads in o hose coun ies less well- o ganised. The business eali y pu hese ideas, goals and expec a ions unde he ‘acid es ’, and he un o una e ou come pushed he big EU duo in o con inued s ess. These wo close allies ha e p esen ed di e gen o unes, wi h di e ing solu ions ... and his has his o ic oo s. Thus, acco ding o he o me a chi ec o he single cu ency, he Eu o was doomed om he s a [12]. His sugges ion abou examining one's conscience has pe haps al eady been unde aken by himsel [19]. The idea o a mone a y union wi h no eal iscal union has p o en o be ha owing. I was no pu o a democ a ic o e o hose who would be mos impac ed, namely EU ci izens. When o me P esiden Geo ge W. Bush amously joked ha one o F ance’s p oblems is ha he e is no F ench wo d meaning ‘en ep eneu ’, he hi he nail on he head. Al hough Hollande has spoken abou s imulus spending, he has no unde aken much needed e o ms o he es ic i e business en i onmen , mainly labou law. “The F ench labou code has 3,650 pages and 200 pages a e added e e y yea . In F ance, when a company g ows in size such ha i needs mo e han 50 employees, 34 addi ional labou laws and es ic ions ake e ec , discou aging businesses om expanding. Meanwhile, in F ance, as o May, 2013, public spending is now a 57% o GDP, while he coun y’s public deb is nea ly 94%, and unemploymen has inc eased 11.5% in he one yea since F ancois Hollande ook o ice.
