Další tematické dominanty tvoří problematika překladu apřekladatelů stěžištěm vněmeckojazyčném prostředí apřesahy kněmecky psané literatuře včeských zemích a(experimentální) poezie 60.a70.let. Nizozemsko-britský historik Arthur der Weduwen přeložil do angličtiny několik zpráv, které vroce 1618 přinesly první holandské noviny; dění vnašem regionu Holanďané sledovali snebývalým zájmem, očemž vypovídá neuvěřitelné číslo minimálně 1402 zpráv vholandském tisku vprůběhu 17.století. Arthur der Weduwen překladu předeslal poučený úvod. Druhým oddílem této retrospektivy se vracíme hned ke dvěma osobnostem, možno říci osudově spjatým: kJanu Amosu Komenskému aženě, která mu zasvětila své rozsáhlé badatelské dílo— Dagmar Čapkové. Přetiskujeme jednu zjejích inspirativních studií apřinášíme též medailon avzpomínky jejích přátel aspolupracovníků. Druhou retrospektivu připravila Petra Hesová: obsahuje zprávu ojejí disertační práci, věnované literární aknihovní pozůstalosti Josefa Václava Friče, která představuje bohatý, dosud zvelké části nezpracovaný materiál. Pro Slovo asmysl Petra Hesová připravila též edici krátké Fričovy komedie Na komisariátě. VKritických rozhledech se Lenka Lee zamýšlí nad knihou Matouše Jalušky otrubadúrském zpěvníku R, Alena M.Černá recenzuje nový výbor zHusových drobných českých spisů vydaný vrámci České knižnice, Václav Maidl píše odruhém svazku Hav líčkovy korespondence (zahrnuje roky 1843–1844), Klára Čermochová se vyrovnává sknihou Jakuba Říhy Nerudův verš, Rafał Majerek se zaměřil na svazek Petra Zajace, Ľubice Schmarcové akolektivu přinášející nový pohled na slovenský romantismus aJosef Šebek komentuje knihu Za textem. Antologie polské sociologie literatury, uspořádanou Jiřím Trávníčkem. OPEN ACCESS 11 Tečku za číslem pak představuje Překlad. Tentokrát jsme sáhli po často zmiňované, do češtiny však zatím nepřeložené klasice— Jednoduchých formách Andrého Jollese. Kapitolu věnovanou pohádce zní přeložil Ladislav Futtera, zasvěcený úvod napsal Josef Vojvodík. Red. OPEN ACCESS Editorial The issue of Slovo asmysl you now hold in your hands or read on your electronic device brings together, in different sections, avariety of texts that focus on 19th century literature. However, it also returns to the threshold of the Thirty Years War and figure of Jan Amos Komenský (Comenius, † 1670) to commemorate their anniversaries. Another dominant theme is translation and translators, mainly in German-speaking regions, and (experimental) poetry of the 1960s and 1970s. The Studies section contains five articles. The first article, by Pavel Šidák, belongs to the genre of historical poetics, focusing on one significant narrative device: the typology and development of narrative commentary in Czech literature of the second half of the 19th century. For this purpose he analyses novels and stories by Václav Beneš Třebízský and— in comparative fashion— by several of his contemporaries. Jiří Hubáček focuses on apeculiar and little-known text: the parodic Sermon on aTerrible Suffering and the Power of Barley, attributed to Václav Kliment Klicpera. The article puts the ‘sermon’ into the wider literary and anthropological contexts and also presents anew edition of the text. In his contribution on the philosophy of Ladislav Klíma, Marek Pocestný returns to the discussion about Klíma’s egodeism and the role of suffering in his thought, especially in relation to Nietzsche. In his polemical dialogue with Urs Heftrich he demonstrates how, in this respect among others, Klíma’s philosophy differs from Nietzsche’s, and he also comments on Jan Patočka’s interpretation of the original Czech philosopher. The two articles that follow are concerned— each in its own way— with poetry of the 1960s and 1970s influenced by information theory, cybernetics and mathematics. Nikola Mizerová addresses Hans Magnus Enzensberger’s poem Hommage à Gödel (which she translates into Czech for the first time), introducing the necessary context of mathematical theories before offering anuanced interpretation of the poem. She supplements her analysis with acloser look at Enzensberger’s collection The Sinking of the Titanic, recently translated into Czech. Richard Müller meanwhile, in his article on the ‘information moment’ in Czech poetry of the 1960s and in literary theory, discusses both spheres not only in the framework of cybernetics and information theory but also against the more comprehensive background of media and mediality as it has (or has not) been addressed by significant literary scholars, in particular Umberto Eco and Miroslav Červenka. OPEN ACCESS 13 Müller then works through the problematic using the example of Czech experimental poet Zdeněk Barborka. The section Sketches is dedicated to the topic of translation and translators in awide theoretical-historical and sociological framework. After an introductory essay by Lucie Merhautová, Jörn Albrecht focuses on the translation of Franz Kafka’s texts into several languages in the course of the last century. In this comparative framework, the author takes all layers into account, from the linguistic aspect to the institutional dimension of translation. Renata Makarska discusses translator studies, arelatively new branch of translatology which brings the figure of the translator again to the forefront. In the article that follows, Jan Budňák looks at the rich and diverse activity of Heinrich Herbatschek, alawyer, writer, journalist and organizer of cultural and economic life before and after the end of the AustroHungarian empire. Although now almost forgotten, Herbatschek emerges as akey figure of the period in cultural-political networks. Carmen Sippl’s article deals with translations from the Russian by Alexander Eliasberg, together with Eliasberg’s reflections on the process of translation as reconstructed from his correspondence with the publishing house Insel-Verlag, while Primus-Heinz Kucher dedicates his contribution to the problem of changes in literary language as aconsequence of forced emigration, and to the question of self-translation. He focuses on three Austrian authors who found their new home and language in the United States: Leo Lania, Felix Pollak and Franzi Ascher. Finally, Erich Unglaub presents afascinating case of successful translation without knowledge of the source language: Rainer Maria Rilke’s German translation of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnets from the Portuguese is reconstructed on the basis of diverse materials, including archival sources, the original text and translations. Last autumn, the doyen of Czech verse theory, Květa Sgallová, celebrated her 90th birthday. In the Interview with Klára Čermochová she talks about the role of verse theory in contemporary literary scholarship, about the underground Evening school of Czech studies that she co-organized at the end of the 1980s, along with ahost of other topics. In this issue, there are two Retrospectives. In the first of them we wish to commemorate the anniversary of the Thirty Years War and events at the beginning of this conflict that took place in the Czech Lands. Dutch-British historian Arthur der Weduwen has translated several reports presented by the first Dutch newspapers on the situation in the lands of the Bohemian Crown. That the Dutch observed this region with great interest is made clear by the astonishing number of reports— at least 1402— published by Dutch newspapers on the Czech Lands during the 17th century. Der Weduwen’s translations are accompanied by an erudite introduction by the translator. The second part of the retrospective focuses on two personalities: Jan Amos Komenský (Comenius) and the woman that has dedicated her lifetime scholarly work to him, Dagmar Čapková. We reprint one of her inspiring articles and supplement it with her biography, as well as memoirs by her colleagues and friends. In the second retrospective, Petra Hesová presents her dissertation dedicated to the literary estate and library of Josef Václav Frič— avast and interesting source material that, for the most part, has yet to be examined. She has also prepared an edition of Frič’s short comedy At the Commissariat. OPEN ACCESS 14 SLOVO A SMYSL 33 Critical Views contains six reviews: Lenka Lee reflects on abook by Matouš Jaluška on the troubadour songbook R; Alena M.Černá reviews anew selection of Jan Hus’ short Czech treatises published in Česká knižnice; Václav Maidl focuses on the second volume of the correspondence written by and addressed to Karel Havlíček (from 1843 and 1844); Klára Čermochová reviews the book Neruda’s Verse by Jakub Říha; Rafał Majerek writes about abook by Peter Zajac, Ľubica Schmarcová and others that brings an innovative perspective to Slovak literary romanticism; and Josef Šebek comments on Beyond the Text: Anthology of Polish Sociology of Literature, edited by Jiří Trávníček. Last but not least, the Translation section. This time we have selected aclassic which, though frequently cited, has never been translated into Czech: André Jolles’ Simple Forms. Achapter from the book dedicated to fairytale has been translated by Ladislav Futtera, preceded by an insightful introduction by Josef Vojvodík. Red. OPEN ACCESS
